Friday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time - Receptive to the Gospel

Read OnlineReceptive to the GospelJesus said to his disciples: “Hear the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom without understanding it, and the Evil One comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground…” Matthew 13:18–20After preaching the Parable of the Sower to the crowds and then explaining to His close disciples (likely the Twelve) the purpose of parables, Jesus, in today's Gospel, offers them an interpretation of the parable. He speaks clearly and personally to them because they are open—their hearts are properly disposed to receive the truth. The parable reveals four kinds of hearts: hardened, shallow, distracted, and receptive. By presenting these four interior dispositions, with only one being ideal, Jesus shows that becoming receptive to the Word of God takes effort, humility, and grace. The first three types reflect a progression of deepening receptivity, but each falls short. The final type, the good soil, represents the goal to which all hearts are called. The first—represented by seed sown on the path—refers to those whose hearts are so hardened that God's Word cannot enter. Their ears hear the Word of God—as symbolized by the sower sowing seed on the path—but the soil of their hearts has been trampled by many sins and self-centered habits, so the seed cannot penetrate. As a result, they do not understand the Gospel, nor do they seek to understand. This might even refer to some who attend church, hearing the readings and the homily, yet remain unmoved by the Gospel. The second—represented by seed sown on rocky ground—refers to those whose hearts are shallow. They receive the Word of God with initial joy and enthusiasm, perhaps even with emotion and spiritual fervor. But that joy is not rooted in deep conviction or sustained by persevering faith. When trials come—when faith demands sacrifice, endurance, or courage—they quickly fall away, disillusioned. The root of divine truth never penetrates the deeper layers of the soul. These are those who like the idea of the Gospel but not the cost that comes with living it fully. The third—represented by seed sown among thorns—refers to those whose hearts are distracted. They welcome the Word of God and allow it to take root, but they simultaneously cling to worldly anxieties, attachments, and desires. The thorns—symbolizing wealth, comfort, ambition, and the cares of daily life—choke the Word so that it becomes fruitless. These are the souls who try to live both for God and for the world. They desire Heaven, but they also crave control, pleasure, or security on their own terms. In such soil, the Word struggles to grow and cannot bear lasting fruit. The final—represented by seed sown on rich soil—refers to those whose hearts are truly receptive. They not only hear the Word of God but understand it, welcome it, meditate on it, and allow it to transform their lives. This heart is open, humble, prayerful, and detached from worldly distractions. The Word penetrates deeply and becomes a source of abundant spiritual fruit—thirty, sixty, or a hundredfold. These are the saints-in-the-making: souls who, though not perfect, cooperate with grace and allow God's truth to sanctify them day by day.Reflect today on the progression revealed in this parable. How open is your heart to the Word of God? As a spiritual seed, God's Word is powerful. When received into a mind filled with faith, and a heart filled with hope and charity, the seed is nurtured and grows. As it grows, authentic transformation takes place. Good fruit becomes evident, and God does great things in and through this holy soul. See yourself on this journey, till the soil, and await God's Word as it is sown. Receive it with joy, and resolve to nourish that seed so that an abundance of good fruit may be borne from your life—thirty, sixty, or a hundredfold. My Divine Sower, You sow the seed of Truth generously and abundantly. You are always speaking to me, revealing Your Love and Your perfect Will, yet I am often hardhearted, shallow, or distracted. Please till the soil of my heart and make me receptive to all You reveal, so that my life may bear an abundance of good fruit for Your Kingdom. Jesus, I trust in You.Image:  The Sower, by James Tissot Source: Free RSS feed from catholic-daily-reflections.com — Copyright © 2026 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Lesson of the Day 163 - There Is No Death. The Son Of God Is Free with Jubi

Voice From Heaven

LESSON 163There Is No Death. The Son Of God Is Free.Death is a thought that takes on many forms, often unrecognized. It may appear as sadness, fear, anxiety or doubt; as anger, faithlessness and lack of trust; concern for bodies, envy, and all forms in which the wish to be as you are not may come to tempt you. All such thoughts are but reflections of the worshipping of death as savior and as giver of release.Embodiment of fear, the host of sin, god of the guilty and the lord of all illusions and deceptions, does the thought of death seem mighty. For it seems to hold all living things within its withered hand; all hopes and wishes in its blighting grasp; all goals perceived but in its sightless eyes. The frail, the helpless and the sick bow down before its image, thinking it alone is real, inevitable, worthy of their trust. For it alone will surely come. All things but death are seen to be unsure, too quickly lost however hard to gain, uncertain in their outcome, apt to fail the hopes they once engendered, and to leave the taste of dust and ashes in their wake, in place of aspirations and of dreams. But death is counted on. For it will come with certain footsteps when the time has come for its arrival. It will never fail to take all life as hostage to itself.Would you bow down to idols such as this? Here is the strength and might of God Himself perceived within an idol made of dust. Here is the opposite of God proclaimed as lord of all creation, stronger than God's Will for life, the endlessness of love and Heaven's perfect, changeless constancy. Here is the Will of Father and of Son defeated finally, and laid to rest beneath the headstone death has placed upon the body of the holy Son of God.Unholy in defeat, he has become what death would have him be. His epitaph, which death itself has written, gives no name to him, for he has passed to dust. It says but this: “Here lies a witness God is dead.” And this it writes again and still again, while all the while its worshippers agree, and kneeling down with foreheads to the ground, they whisper fearfully that it is so.It is impossible to worship death in any form, and still select a few you would not cherish and would yet avoid, while still believing in the rest. For death is total. Either all things die, or else they live and cannot die. No compromise is possible. For here again we see an obvious position, which we must accept if we be sane; what contradicts one thought entirely can not be true, unless its opposite is proven false. The idea of the death of God is so preposterous that even the insane have difficulty in believing it. For it implies that God was once alive and somehow perished; killed, apparently, by those who did not want Him to survive. Their stronger will could triumph over His, and so eternal life gave way to death. And with the Father died the Son as well.Death's worshippers may be afraid. And yet, can thoughts like these be fearful? If they saw that it is only this which they believe, they would be instantly released. And you will show them this today. There is no death, and we renounce it now in every form, for their salvation and our own as well. God made not death. Whatever form it takes must therefore be illusion. This the stand we take today. And it is given us to look past death, and see the life beyond. Our Father, bless our eyes today. We are Your messengers, and we would look upon the glorious reflection of Your Love which shines in everything. We live and move in You alone. We are not separate from Your eternal life. There is no death, for death is not Your Will. And we abide where You have placed us, in the life we share with You and with all living things, to be like You and part of You forever. We accept Your Thoughts as ours, and our will is one with Yours eternally. Amen.- Jesus Christ in ACIM

This week on “Talk About Las Vegas With Ira,” Ira welcomes acclaimed vocalist Jonathan Karrant, who brings his celebrated tribute to legendary composer and songwriter Cole Porter to Myron's at The Smith Center on June 9. Jonathan reflects on his own journey from Ft. Smith, Arkansas to Manhattan, Los Angeles and ultimately Las Vegas, where he has become one of the city's most respected interpreters of the Great American Songbook. Jonathan shares how, at a very young age, he fell in love with classic standards after discovering compilation albums by Ella Fitzgerald and Julie London, which introduced him to the sophisticated wit and emotional depth of Cole Porter's music. Calling the Great American Songbook “America's poetry,” Jonathan explains why these timeless songs continue to resonate across generations, adapting effortlessly into swing, waltz and count-less musical styles. The conversation also explores Jonathan's deep connection with live audiences, which he describes as an ongoing “conversation,” and how audience energy shapes every perfor-mance. He discusses his passion for recording music in the studio, preserving moments in time through albums. Jonathan also talks about collaborating with jazz singer and pianist Diane Schuur and performing his latest single with her, “Caught a Touch of Your Love,” from the album Full Circle. Filled with stories about music, artistry, sophistication and timeless songwriting, this episode is a must-listen for fans of jazz, cabaret and the enduring brilliance of the Great American Songbook. Top Gun turns 40, and we can't talk about it without talking about the soundtrack that still punches through your speakers. From the first seconds of Kenny Loggins' “Danger Zone” on the aircraft carrier, we trace how 80s movie music uses needle drops to build character, tension, romance, and pure momentum. We get into the details that make the Top Gun soundtrack legendary: the way the Righteous Brothers' “You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'” revives an older classic for a new generation, how Berlin's “Take My Breath Away” becomes a musical signature for Maverick and Charlie, and why “Great Balls of Fire” remains one of the most unforgettable bar-scene singalongs in film. We also swap quick takes on the movie itself, the sequel callbacks, and why sometimes the music ages even better than the action. Then we jump into our Music in My Shoes picks and stories, including a huge milestone for the show: listeners in 100 countries. Along the way we hit The Kinks, The Doors, Peter Frampton's live-album magic, the Psychedelic Furs “Pretty in Pink” re-recording drama, Robert Palmer's “Addicted to Love” and the power of MTV-era visuals, plus a billion-views moment for the Outfield's “Your Love” and a spring break memory that drilled it into one of our brains forever. I Just Don't See It Yet! It's OK to ASK! Jesus: Matthew 26:39-42 Paul: 2 Corinthians 12:8,9 Note the absence of an answer before an explanation of what was really happening was given by the Lord! We tend to seek relief over resolution, deliverance over development, consuming over investing! *Paul didn't stop trusting during the silence. God designed Jesus' suffering and obedience for His Eternal Glory and Our Blessing and Reward! Suffering for His sake is not wasted …. It's redemptive and its affects are multiple. In our times of seemingly unanswered prayer, if we still Trust Him, God is working on something FAR greater than our temporary relief or comfort! (See James 1:2-4) Our inner person does not get stronger without resistance! This Thorn was a Season! Some things remain a mystery! Deuteronomy 29:29; seek revelation (Daniel 2:22) “I Have Learned” …. Philippians 4:11, 12, 13 “Thy Will Be Done” …. I surrender my inadequacies to Your Love, Grace, and Sovereign Lordship over my life! When we add “Thy Will Be Done” …. “God will give what we ask for OR what we would have asked if we knew what He Knew.” (Tim Keller)
