The 2020 Netflix miniseries titled "The Queen's Gambit" has revived interested in the book by the same name. Published in 1983, The Queen's Gambit is a coming-of-age story for the "brainy girls" out there. While Beth has lost a lot of things, one thing that she has kept throughout her life is chess. Thankfully, she also seems to be a natural born prodigy. As she ages and faces more and more people at her level, or even better, she is forced to face her many other personal issues as well. City Beer Store isn’t a store. Well, it is, but in 2020 it has evolved far beyond that narrow description. It’s a beer and natural wine bar, a restaurant, a gathering space, a patio hangout on nice days, and yeah, sure, a bottle shop too. It’s many things all at once, and the store’s mascot, a platypus, represents that duality of the business. Over the last decade or so, City Beer has joined the ranks of America’s great beer bars. And that wasn’t without a lot of hustle on the part of the owners, married couple Craig and Beth Wathen. The two originally opened City Beer Store in 2006 in San Francisco’s South of Market, or SoMa, neighborhood, inside a tiny space on Folsom Street. They were way ahead of the curve, creating the type of business that, well, confused people. The pair fielded constant questions: Is it a bar? Or is it a store? Whatever it was, it became very popular. Over the years, they came to outgrow the small room’s capacity, which was particularly clear during SF Beer Week or other major events. So when the opportunity arose to move into a bigger space, they took the leap, and in 2018 they reopened in a large restaurant space two blocks away. Turns out, it was a massive undertaking. Its new digs are several times larger than the old City Beer, and in it, the Wathens now also run a food program. They have a bigger staff, a kitchen team, a broader selection in additional fridges, and more customers walking through the door every day. While Beth handles the operations of the bar and restaurant, Craig oversees the beer selection for the taps and store. Despite the uptick in workload, he’ll often put in that face time himself with brewers, going on frequent runs to personally pick up kegs. Between the two of them, there’s quite a lot to do, which begs the question: how can a small beer bar scale up so drastically? And what does the success of this kind of operation mean for beer retailers everywhere? This is Craig and Beth Wathen of City Beer Store in San Francisco. Listen in.
Our live show in Brooklyn is one week away! Get your tickets now at weknowsparenting.com. This week Peter and Beth record early before she goes to LA for the week. Bryn bumps his face on the wall and gets a mouth full of blood. He does not enjoy it. Maeven get spiteful at Peter’s attempts to stop her from repeatedly dumping out a box of paints. While Beth is away Peter attempts to interview the kids, but forgets to plug in the nice microphone. It’s funny, but boy does it sound terrible. The kids are asleep now, so deal with it. While Beth lives it up on her solo vacation to the Cayman Islands, Peter whips the kids into shape with the power of silence, clear boundaries, a strict bedtime and (more than) a little help from Grandma. Despite being incredibly helpful with the kids Peter’s mom refuses to be a guest on the podcast and he’s forced to interrupt Beth’s vacation for a last minute recording, which she is, of course, MORE than happy to do. He then calls his best friend Nick for a spooky Would You Knows scenario. And just when you think that one episode of talking about different names for vaginas is enough Peter and Beth talk about it a whole lot more. Maeven graduates from the crib to her very own mermaid covered big girl bed and manages to only fall out a couple of times! Bryn learns two big lessons: that friendships have their ups and down and that he can get Beth to buy him things with the mere threat of a public meltdown. While Beth is at work, Peter spends a Monday holiday at home rewriting punchlines to kids’ jokes with a lot of input from Bryn and Maeven. Peter and Beth answer listener mail about the “right” way to play with your kids and reveal another shocking layer to the continuing saga started in the infamous “Peter is NOT Defensive” episode. Beth Comstock is the former vice chair of GE and a corporate director of Nike. Her accomplishments include building GE’s Business Innovations and GE Ventures, as well as overseeing the reinvention of GE Lighting. Prior to her role as vice chair she served as chief marketing officer of the company. And before that she had another dream job as the president of integrated media at NBC Universal, overseeing the company’s digital efforts, including the early formation of Hulu. While Beth has built an incredible career, she’s also made some tough decisions in the process of doing so. We’re all lucky enough live vicariously through her, with the opportunity to learn more about her journey and the decisions that led her to career success in her new book out today called Imagine It Forward. In it, Beth shares her story, documenting the ups and downs of working at GE and NBC during a time of tremendous growth. But, Beth will tell you she also wrote this book to help those out in the middle of their career. It’s for those who want to make change happen, but feel they need permission to do so, whether through others or from themselves. In today’s episode I am joined by I Want Her Job founder Brianne. Beth’s Wild Idea: To become a world class rock climber, and inspire others to find their own drive and definition of happiness and success. Beth Rodden started climbing in indoor gyms when she was 14. She quickly won national competitions, and then began climbing outside around the world. She became famous for free climbing the nose on El Capitan. She also completed many other first ascents, like free climbing the Meltown, a 5.14c route in Yosemite, where she showed the world women can climb as well as men. It hasn’t all been easy on and off the wall for Beth, though. In 2000, Beth and three of her climbing partners were on a climbing trip in Kyrgyzstan when they were captured by members of the IMU, a militant group. They escaped on the sixth day, but no one at home even knew they’d been kidnapped. A few years later, Beth went through a divorce. After that, she decided to break down her own ideals about perfectionism and being a constant overachiever. I love Beth’s story because it’s honest, and perfectionism is something I’ve struggled with and many listeners told me they struggle with. While Beth speaks about breaking the perfectionist cycle, she’s also achieved a version of success and happiness that works for her. She still climbs. She’s a sought-after speaker, a beautiful writer, she’s remarried, and a mom to a four-year old son. We talked about what it was like to share the story of her kidnapping with the world, what she has learned from being a mom, and how you can shatter your own ideals about perfectionism. We also dive into her relationship with climbing today, and what’s it like to live in the magical valley of Yosemite. Listen to this episode if: You’re a climber. You are a recovering perfectionist. You want to visit or have been to Yosemite. You are still looking for your own sense of drive and passion. Episode 3 of "Are You Afraid of the Podcast" looks at The Tale of the Lonely Ghost. While that title may sound terrifying, the execution of this episode leaves quite a bit to be desired. Amanda is forced to spend a Summer with her aunt Dottie and cousin Beth. While Beth is needlessly rude to Amanda, she just wants to fit in. So to prove she's worthy of hanging with her crew, she agrees to spend a night alone in the supposedly haunted house next door. But when the ghost who inhabits the house makes their presence known, it's up to Amanda to figure out what it wants before it's too late. This episode has one of the truly worst characters in TV history, a way too excited aunt and a lame story-teller. Still, we have some fun with why abandoned houses are always scary. __________________________________________ CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE!!! www.thefrontrowmoviereviews.com We are also now on Instagram! Beth and Tung Tran's son Jack was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes six months ago at the age of two (While Beth was 8 months pregnant). This episode is a fantastic look into the first few months of life with type 1 diabetes as well as an eye opening (for me) look about how things have changed since Arden's diagnosis. I was heartened by how the Tran family is embracing diabetes technology and the diabetes community online. Moreover, I was elated to hear about how their physicians made the family aware of technology and Internet based type 1 diabetes communities. Spend an hour with this delightful family - learn which Pixar movie characters their kids are named after, feel their positive outlook, hear how a Facebook group has helped them with T1 and immerse yourself in their geekdom (Tran mention's Princess Leia's bikini a lot).
