There's no denying when “spooky season” comes around that pumpkin beers will be available. A popular autumnal seasonal, pumpkin beers are still a dominant force in “seasonality” in beer. Today we talk to two breweries who brew pumpkin beers with an eye to how they're made, why they are a conversation starter and their lasting impact in the world of craft beer.Guests Chad Henderson is a NC native and original team member of NoDa Brewing Company.  He has been the head brewer for the Charlotte based brewery for the company's 12 year existence and is also Co-owner.  Chad's focus through the NoDa Brewing Company beers and products is to deliver a diverse array of exciting beers that range from traditional to experimental with an emphasis on quality and consistency.  The brewery releases new beers every week and has evolved to operate out of a 35,000 sq ft facility (that will soon be expanded to 50,000 sq ft) and a 60 bbl production system and a 5 bbl RnD system.  The brewery has won multiple major awards between World Beer Cup, GABF, US Open and many other local and national competitions.  Chad prides himself and team on being both a dependable brewery and one that is constantly looking for a new expression through beer while staying involved with the community through various charities and events.Tyson Arp is Overlord of Brewing for Nebraska Brewing Company (NBC), overseeing operations at their production brewery.  His journey into craft beer began as a homebrewer in the early 2000's and eventually he volunteered his way into an assistant brewer position at NBC in 2007.  Upon becoming Head Brewer in 2009, his focus on quality and process documentation quickly put NBC on the map as the most awarded brewery in the state.  Success of Tyson's barrel aged products and expanding markets led NBC to open a packaging brewery in 2014 where Tyson was integral in the design, engineering, and implementation of the new facility.  Since then, continued focus on team building and process standardization has allowed Tyson more time to focus on product development and streamlining procedures throughout the brewery operations. This Episode is Sponsored by:Estrella GaliciaEstrella Galicia is an independent, family-owned brewery  in northwest Spain, founded in 1906.Estrella Galicia Cerveza Especial is a world class lager, brewed using the finest Spanish malts, locally  cultivated Galician hops and the best brewing practices, in a state-of-the-art facility in A Coruna. On February 25, Chad Henderson, head brewer and co-owner of NoDa Brewing Company, shared his story and spoke on the theme of "Overcoming." Henderson was the brewer at NoDa when it opened in 2011 on North Davidson Street. Despite massive growth, he has stayed true to the brand and homebrew roots, and he still excited. Supposedly he does take a day off every now and then, though you wouldn't know it. Whether it's brewing new recipes (and participating in zany YouTube videos) for the weekly releases or representing the brewery at events, this homebrewer turned pro is seemingly everywhere. Brewing is more than a job for Chad; it's a passion—which shows in NoDa's beers.

Hey Gang, Have you ever wondered what it's like to run a brewery? How do you take it from a garage to a legitimate business? This show is for you; today we're joined by the legendary Todd Ford, founder of NoDa Brewing Company in Charlotte, NC. After 25 years as an airline pilot, Todd, along with his wife Suzie, and Head Brewer Chadwick Henderson, started NoDa Brewing Company in 2011. NoDa has grown from a small microbrewery to a regional force and is the state's 12th largest brewery as of 2019. They've since expanded to three locations (The OG, NorthEnd, and the CLT airport) and continue to be one of the crown jewels of the Queen City. NoDa has produced over 11.5m cans in the last three years while working on reducing the state's restrictive self-distribution cap. Now with the cap effectively removed they have set up a satellite distribution in the Raleigh-Durham market. Their goal is to be the most successful and creative local brewery in the Carolinas. Founders' All Day IPA. Firestone Walker's 805 Blonde Ale. Victory’s Golden Monkey Tripel. These are all examples of brands that have shaped bottom lines and shifted futures for some of the country’s biggest breweries. For most of them, that runaway success and influence came about serendipitously. These are business-altering beers that now steer the course of their respective companies—and there are plenty of other examples of similar players scattered across the country. In today’s podcast, we’re going to hear about one of those—and how in 2014, an IPA from a 9,000-barrel brewery in Charlotte, North Carolina, completely changed the trajectory of the personal and professional life of its head brewer, Chad Henderson. That beer is NoDa Brewing Company’s Hop, Drop 'n Roll, the 2014 World Beer Cup gold medal winner in the American-Style IPA category. It’s a West Coast IPA that continues to move fast to this day, even in an era of hazy, juicy counterparts. Five years ago, when some kind of monumental success at the bi-annual, global competition was the last thing Chad was expecting, his world got turned upside down. In this conversation, we follow this path of how a single beer changed so much for Chad, NoDa’s co-owners Todd and Suzie Ford, and the brewery itself. From sales, to quality control, to management of the NoDa beer portfolio, Hop, Drop 'n Roll is a continuous thread that runs through it all. It helped push the brewery to almost 16,000 BBLs' of production last year. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, we’ll also mention a little about making hard seltzer, too. After all, if you’re talking IPA, you might as well hit on one of the other most important categories impacting beer and breweries in 2019. For now, let’s shift to hops. This is Chad Henderson, head brewer and co-owner of NoDa Brewing Company. Listen in.

[FAN BOY ALERT!!!] As Page mentions in the podcast, when we debated moving to Charlotte back in 2014, the "Pros" list was: family, NoDa, jobs, Hop Drop, etc., etc. You get the point. We've been fans of the brewery for years, so it was only fitting that we bring on the couple behind what has become one of Charlotte's and the industry's leading craft beer brands. Todd and Suzie talk about how both of their companies were acquired around the same time, which coincided with a growing buzz around Todd's home brewing and tasting parties. They decided to make the proverbial leap to launch NoDa, and the rest is history. Now, they say, it's about keeping up the demand and all of the latest and greatest trends in the industry, while also standing up against state legislation which is currently limiting the growth of N.C. brewers. We can't thank Todd and Suzie enough for joining us on this episode, and as always, big thanks to Garrett Tichy, Hygge and Richard Brooke for having us as a member of their inaugural Hygge Podcast Residency! The 2017 USDGC is over, and Nate Sexton is your champion. Nate claims his first major title after holding onto a 3-7 stroke lead throughout most of the last three rounds of the tournament. Despite the rain and wet conditions, the 2017 USDGC was one of the best ones yet. We talked to tournament director Jonathan Poole immeditaely following Nate's winning putt, and got his take on how the event went, and how his team was able to handle the weather. We then talked to newly-minted champ Nate Sexton about what this win means for him, what extra motivation he had from becoming a father, and how this win solidifies him as one of the greatest players in the game.
