Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova.  This week, I'm excited to replay an insightful conversation with the accomplished Beth Comstock. Beth is a self-described change-maker who has been the President of Integrated Media at NBC Universal, overseeing Ad-sales, Marketing, and Research. She led the company's digital efforts, including Peacock Equity acquiring iVillage.com, and oversaw the founding of Hulu. She was then tapped by GE to accelerate its evolution from an old-school conglomerate to a global technology-driven company. Cultivating a start-up mentality across the organization for over two decades, she catalyzed growth and novel thinking within GE, ultimately operating their Business Innovation unit. She was also the first female Vice Chair and first Chief Marketing Officer at GE in more than 20 years. She is a member of Nike's board of directors and a Forbes World's 100 Most Powerful Women. She's also a published author with her book Imagine It Forward.     THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone who wants to learn from one of the most successful ‘introverted change-makers' about how to inspire teams, get uncomfortable, change jobs and companies gracefully, and transform a 125-year-old brand.    TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… Beth shares nuggets of gold gleaned from her 20-year career at GE and NBC Universal. Beth provides inspiration and guidance in an age of staggering technological advancement, the ever-stronger pull of the “next big thing,” and the gravity of the unknown. It is becoming exceedingly important to be self-aware and cognizant of the things that make our businesses human and creative. We work with and for humans, and our customers and audiences are human. Likewise, it is important that our leadership be just as rooted in our humanity. It is our honest and dynamic experience as human beings that will allow us and our businesses to thrive in a world ruled more and more by algorithms and automation.    WHAT I LOVE MOST… Beth is always looking to write her next story and live it as a courageous human being. She has learned along the way that our jobs do not define us. Who we are, the networks we create, the people we meet along the way–that's what is important. With each new opportunity comes the next story we will create!    Running time: 34:54   Subscribe on iTunes   Find Tiffani Online: Facebook LinkedIn X   Find Beth Online: LinkedIn    Beth's Book:  Imagine It Forward

Author, and business executive Beth Comstock says to Guy Raz in this classic 2021 interview "I'm about change." In college, she wanted to be a doctor, but organic chemistry wasn't her strong suit, so she shifted to journalism. When journalism didn't work out, she started working in publicity. So, when GE bought NBC in 1986 right as Beth was starting her career in advertising, she was ready to adapt again. She worked her way to becoming CMO of GE, helping grow revenue, devise a successful green energy program, and more. Then, when NBC began to explore their approach to digital media, Beth couldn't resist returning to the storied network, where a new frontier in media was opening up (for reference: this was around the time Google bought YouTube). While there she helped seed what would become Hulu. Around the time of the 2008 financial crisis, Beth returned to GE as the company's first female Vice Chair of Business Innovations, which was also around the time she penned the inspiring and candid book Imagine it Forward: Courage, Creative, and the Power of Change .

In this episode, I'll reveal the backstory of my participation in Fast Fall Women. But first, what was I thinking? I went from no one knowing about my experiences being raised by a mom with manic depression – to today, the world being able to hear one of my most vulnerable moments for $18.95.  Here's the truth: Today marks a milestone for me as a published author in a book that features these writing goddesses: Amy Tan, Jane Smiley, Caroline Leavitt, Bobbie Ann Mason, Honor Moore, Darien Hsu Gee, Ilene Beckerman, Lynn Peril as well as new writers like myself. It's a big deal and this is why you should tune into today's episode especially if you've ever wanted to tell your story (or feel scared to).  Imagine harnessing the whimsical power of your childhood imagination and translating it into the real world as a mompreneur. That's the journey I've been on, and in this episode, I share the heart and soul of it all. Listen in as I explore how motherhood can transform your relationship with your imagination and how you can navigate through the ups and downs of life using this powerful tool.  In today's episode, you will also hear the backstory to Fertile Imagination: my own book coming out on October 31, 2023. Prefaces tend to be overlooked but mine left an impression on other moms who are looking for more bubble wrap to protect their sanity, so I figured I'd share it with you. It took courage to tell this story, and I hope it resonates with you, giving you the strength to face your own high stakes and standards. Let's connect on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissallarena/. Send me a “hi” DM on Instagram letting me know you caught this week's episode. I'd love to know who is listening. In this episode, you will hear these ideas expressed: What does it feel like to be published? How did Melissa pitch her story, Imagine It Forward? Why Melissa wrote the book, Fertile Imagination When imagination can come in handy: Harnessing the power of childhood imagination in motherhood and entrepreneurship Is imagining too big possible? What it takes to write a book for two years without losing hope… Growing up with a single mom with manic depression Relying on imagination as a child  How imagination helps navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship and motherhood The journey of writing a book, how the vision sustained through massive life changes, and the reawakening of imagination SHARE this episode with a mom founder, entrepreneur, or creator who wants to pursue bigger dreams for herself and needs a guide with on-the-ground experience. Book participants/podcast guests “Melissa is an inspiring display of tenacity and motivation. Whenever you're feeling stuck, peruse Melissa's thoughtfully compiled tips and exercises and you'll be creating magic in no time.” – Suzy Batiz, Chief Executive and Visionary Officer, ~Pourri, The Makers of Poo~Pourri, supernatural, Alive OS® “Melissa's words are authentic and important. She is a great listener and now shares reality-based strategies for imagining your own imperfect, fulfilling life.” – Martha Hennessey, Former New Hampshire State Senator / House of Representative “This is the book for a mom who wants a second jet engine to embark on her own journey from thinking she will have to wait another lifetime to dream big to knowing she can take steps right now to uncover and do what she would find more fulfilling at this life stage. Melissa writes both intimately and conversationally about topics that many moms around the world can relate to (some dads too). She invites the reader into a personal and deep journey about topics that are crucially important to uncover what would make a mom truly happy to work on...even after the kids are in bed. It was an honor and a pleasure to speak with her for an interview, which she has included excerpts of in this book, too!” - Ken Honda, Japan's bestselling zen millionaire, author of Happy Money: The Japanese Art of Making Peace with Your Money Moms like us with big dreams and school-age kids: For moms like me, the pandemic was an opportunity to re-evaluate and course-correct things in our lives we weren't thrilled with. Coming out of this period, sluggish yet motivated, so many of us can use this book to help us wake up! If you're looking to refresh, reenergize, and yes, reimagine a better version of your life, this book is for you. I loved the hilarious, yet poignant stories about motherhood today and the window into the world of those who've gone for it – and did it. - Macollvie Neel, Brooklyn, NY “The words: imagination, play and fun are not the usual things we as mothers think of when wondering how to get a grip back on our career and I believe it provides a really fresh take and lots of food for thought for mothers reading it. Its tone is so energetic and fresh!” – Alejandra Molina, Coach, Miami, Florida “Melissa is a mom of three with big dreams who tells it like it is. She draws on her own experiences and the experiences of professionals she's interviewed for her podcast to reflect on the plight of the mother. How do women conform to or challenge the traditional “mom script”? If you're a mom, what can you do to break the “cultural glass ceiling” to be yourself and a great parent, all without having to force yourself into a mom mold that doesn't fit you? Melissa is like a great friend, honest and wise and funny, telling you about her life and asking you to reflect on yours. This book is a great purchase for moms in every stage of life.” – Maureen Turner Carey, Librarian, Austin, Texas “In her book, Melissa shows us that motherhood does not have to be a pause or an end to your pre-child self. With guidance from her podcast guests, she encourages us to think big, find what lights us up, think big, and move towards our goals with the steps that fit the reality of our lives as they are today. In doing so we honor and inspire our child(ren), and our own inner child.” – Katherine Howell, Administrator in a Museum, Queens, NY

The Buzz 1: “A brand is no longer what we tell the consumer it is -- it is what consumers tell each other it is.” (Scott Cook, Intuit co-founder) The Buzz 2: “Your brand is the single most important investment you can make in your business.” (Steve Forbes, Forbes magazine editor-in-chief) The Buzz 3: “A great brand is a story that is never completely told.” (Scott Bedbury, Brandstream CEO) The Buzz 4: “Whether B2B or B2C…We all are emotional beings looking for relevance, context and connection.” (Beth Comstock, Imagine It Forward author) The American Marketing Association [www.ama.org] describes “brand” as “...a name, term, design, symbol or any other feature that identifies one seller's goods or service as distinct from those of other sellers.” More than a year into the Covid-19 pandemic where volatility, complexity, and uncertainty have been at an all-time high, a brand's ability to get attention, be remembered, and be an educational resource has become more imperative than ever. That, in conjunction with consumers wanting their buying power to reflect their personal values, has placed extreme pressure on brands to get it right. Given all of this, what role does branding play in the buyer's journey and has that changed since the pandemic began? What could or should companies do to be better at reflecting the social climate or should they not engage in that conversation? What other impacts will the pandemic have on the future of branding? We'll ask Alicia Tillman, Mike Grehan and Dennis Thomas for their take on Brand Marketing in a Post-Pandemic World.

For this tenth episode of Agile Giants, we have quite a treat. I'm joined this week by Beth Comstock. Beth is probably best known as the former Vice Chair of GE, specifically leading innovations. She wrote a really transparent book called Imagine It Forward: Courage, Creativity, and the Power of Change, which is a really interesting blend of a reflection on her time at GE, the good and the bad, almost a memoir, as well as a nice set of best practices and observations for corporate leaders responsible for innovation. We use her book as a jumping off point for the discussion, but I can't recommend strongly enough you pick it up yourself if you're interested in digging in further. It's available wherever books are sold. Show Links: Imagine It Forward: Courage, Creativity, and the Power of Change  (Amazon) (Barnes & Nobel)  Beth's Personal Website

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week I have the personal honor and pleasure of connecting with the accomplished, Beth Comstock. Beth is a self-described change-maker who has been the President of Integrated Media at NBC Universal,  overseeing Ad-sales, Marketing, and Research. She led the company’s digital efforts, including Peacock Equity acquiring iVillage.com and oversaw the founding of Hulu. She was then tapped by GE to accelerate its evolution from an old-school conglomerate to a global technology-driven company. Cultivating a start-up mentality across the organization for over two decades, she was a catalyst for growth and novel thinking within GE, ultimately operating their Business Innovation unit. She was also the first female Vice Chair and first Chief Marketing Officer at GE in more than 20 years. She is a member of Nike’s board of directors and a Forbe’s World’s 100 Most Powerful Women. Most recently she has become a published author with her brand new book Imagine It Forward. I am thrilled to have Beth Comstock on the What’s Next! Podcast today! THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone who wants to learn from one of the most successful ‘introverted change-makers’ about how to inspire teams, get uncomfortable, change jobs and companies gracefully, and transform a 125 year-old brand. TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… Beth shares nuggets of gold gleaned from her 20-year career at GE and NBC Universal. Beth provides inspiration and guidance in an age of staggering technological advancement, the ever-stronger pull of the “next big thing,” and the gravity of the unknown. It is becoming exceedingly important to be self-aware and cognizant of the things that make our businesses human and creative. We work with and for humans, our customers and audiences are human, and likewise, it is important that our leadership be just as rooted in our humanity. It is our honest and dynamic experience as human beings that will allow us, and our businesses, to thrive in a world ruled more and more by algorithms and automation. WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST… Beth is always looking to write her next story and live it as a courageous human being. She has learned along the way that our jobs do not define us. Who we are, the networks we create, the people we meet along the way–that’s what is important. With each new opportunity comes the next story we will create! Beth Comstock is change maker who has helped people grapple with rapid-fire change and open up their companies to transformation. Before she ever led the reinvention of a team or a business, she learned to rely on her curiosity to provoke change in herself. She infused her life with the habit of discovery, seeking out new ideas, people and places and in turn she built a career path from storyteller to chief marketer to GE Vice Chair. And now author. Beth knows what it is like to work on the front lines of change. In nearly three decades at GE, she led efforts to accelerate new growth and innovation, initiated GE's digital and clean-energy transformation, developed new businesses and increased GE's brand value. She created GE Ventures, oversaw GE Lighting, and was the company's Chief Marketing Officer. As President of Integrated Media at NBC Universal, Beth oversaw ad revenue and the company's digital efforts, including the early development of hulu.com. Earlier in her career, she held a succession of marketing and communications roles at GE, NBC, CBS and Turner Broadcasting/CNN. Beth is a director at Nike, trustee of The National Geographic Society and former board president of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Museum. She graduated from the College of William and Mary with a degree in biology. We touched on many a topic in this conversation, including: 1 - How Comstock went about shifting the culture from seeking perfection before releasing anything to the public to one that embraced the minimum viable product 2 - Roadblocks she faced in rolling out the Fastworks program and the leans startup methodology across GE insofar as policy and procedure was concerned and how to overcome this; and 3 - What really happened when she and longtime CEO Jeff Immelt resigned from the company on the back of activist investors pushing for change, and why she thought it happened Topics Discussed: Why change is hard at an organizational and individual level How to get buy-in internally Speaking the same language and translating messages Rolling out the lean startup at GE Why culture and process needs to adapt to support new capabilities Leading indicators versus trailing indicators Roadblocks and lessons learned What really happaned in GE’s executive shake-up Shorttermism and how it can plague innovation at listed companies How a long-term tenure in one organization (27 years in Comstock’s case) doesn’t need to come at the cost of creativity or learning The three buckets of innovation and how GE invested across the three Why marketing is what you do at the beginning, not at the end Why the lean startup can be applied to anything from engine turbines to medical C-arm devices Why short feedback loops are key to learning and moving towards product market fit for new ideas, and how bloated organisational procedures can sabotage this Show Notes: Get the book: https://www.amazon.com/Imagine-Forward-Courage-Creativity-Change-ebook/dp/B078LJW4G4 Web: bethcomstock.info Twitter: @bethcomstock --- Patreon: www.patreon.com/thesteveglaveski Employee to Entrepreneur book: www.employeetoentrepreneur.io Listen to Future Squared on Apple Podcasts  goo.gl/sMnEa0 Also available on: Spotify, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Stitcher and Soundcloud Twitter: www.twitter.com/steveglaveski Instagram: www.instagram.com/@thesteveglaveski Future Squared: www.futuresquared.xyz Steve Glaveski: www.steveglaveski.com Medium: www.medium.com/@steveglaveski NEW Facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/futuresquared/ ‍

As human beings, we drastically underestimate the power of change. It’s because we derive comfort from routine and habit. It feels safe, secure, and comfortable. Change is the exact opposite, it DEMANDS that we step outside of what is normal for us and do different things. My guest on this episode of Unconventional Genius is Beth Comstock. She’s one of the most powerful women in the business world right now and has recently released an amazing book that recounts her transformation from a shy publicist to the first woman Vice-Chair at General Electric. Beth knows about the power of change because she’s leaned into it all her life. In fact, her mother used to ask her, “Why do you always have to make things so hard?” Beth says it was because she wanted to take on her own weaknesses and fears to become something more. Beth is truly one of the most impressive people I’ve ever spoken with. I spoke with Beth at the historic Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles and she shared her insights on courage, overcoming the status quo, encouraging creativity, the power of change, and the results that come from true organizational change. I hope you’ll listen to this engaging conversation. We are taught NOT to be creative - but Beth says we must learn to overcome it In her own words, Beth Comstock says she grew up as a classic “good girl,” but when she stepped into the working world a rebel emerged - but not in the classic “buck the system” way you might think of. She simply believed there was a better way of doing things and she couldn’t hold it in. Looking back, she can see that the typical educational system as well as the way society has been structured has made us dependent on knowing things so that we can feel like we are in control of them. To move into a context of change causes us to feel untethered, like we have no firm footing. Beth says it’s important that we learn to develop the belief that we can figure it out - whatever “it” may be. It’s that attitude that harnesses the power of change. It moves us beyond convention to unlock the unconventional genius that resides in all of us. Courage comes from making yourself take small, everyday steps forward From the time she was young, Beth pushed herself. She wanted to be stronger than the things she was afraid of. But first, she had to admit that it WAS her fear that was holding her back. None of us like to admit we are afraid, but she says it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s natural - but it’s equally natural for human beings to want to overcome fear. As an adult, Beth has seen the benefit of conquering her fears step by step throughout life. It’s the resolve to face fear, question it, and push into it instead of retreating from it. She calls it “everyday courage.” She’s taken this life lesson into her leadership. Applying her “small-steps” approach to teams has empowered many people to find the courage to unleash their own creativity. Listen to hear how Beth has led ground-breaking initiatives, pioneered new ways of approaching problems, and has fostered creativity in teams that goes beyond the normal “creative sessions” often touted in business circles. The power of change is yours when you think into the future and take action In her book, “Imagine It Forward,” Beth outlines what she refers to as her “Imagine It Forward” framework - a way individuals and teams can systematically address barriers to creativity, innovation, and obstacles to scaling. I particularly enjoyed a number of the strategies she outlines in the framework. They themselves are creative ways of thinking about problems or challenges to enable new insights and perspectives. The overall framework is based on the belief that looking into the future, imaging what it could be, is one of the most powerful ways of opening minds to possibilities. She points out that transforming the mindset and culture of a company is messy and without any kind of easy checklist. She believes the challenge calls for the courage to defy convention, go around corporate gatekeepers when necessary, and reinvent what is possible. If you’re also tired of being told “it can’t be done,” you’ll enjoy Beth’s book and this conversation. We explored the personal and professional price that disruptors might pay as organisations resist change. Beth gave practical tips for introverts like herself – introverts who wish to lead, as well as tips for managers of introverts. We touched on the problems that have rocked GE and talked about gatekeepers versus goalkeepers and how they can shape your job choices. My favorite quotes are: “No is not yet" "You cannot mitigate risk, you have to navigate it.” Beth recommended three books: The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp Management Principles by Peter Drucker. “Without a customer there is no business” The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker  If you would like to follow Beth on social media you can find her on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook @bethcomstock.
