In April 1988, the quiet lakeside community of Lakeway, Texas was shaken when 45-year-old Betty Ann Thomas vanished from her home on Cold Water Lane. A violent scene inside the residence suggested a targeted attack, and two days later, Betty was found in the trunk of her Jaguar outside an Austin hotel, bound, gagged, and executed. Her murder became the first, and still the only, homicide in Lakeway's history. As detectives uncovered Betty's life story and examined her home for clues, an eerie parallel emerged: her father-in-law had been murdered in a similarly cold-blooded fashion eight years earlier. Though investigators explored every possibility, including motives involving money and past associations, the case ultimately went cold.Decades later, advancements in forensics, including an unidentified male DNA profile and recent fingerprint matches, have reignited the investigation. Nearly forty years on, Betty's family and the Lakeway community continue to wait for justice. If you have any information about the murder of Betty Ann Thomas, please call the Lakeway Police Department at (512) 261-2800.Sources: The Austin American-Statesman, The Seguin Gazette-Enterprise, The San Antonio Express-News, The Houston Chronicle, The Clinton Eye, The Clinton Daily Democrat, The Lawrence Journal-WorldYou can support gone cold and listen to the show ad-free at https://patreon.com/gonecoldpodcastFind us at https://www.gonecold.comFor Gone Cold merch, visit https://gonecold.dashery.comFollow gone cold on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, YouTube, and X. On the 3rd Nightmare Before Christmas... On the sweltering evening of July 14, 1982, a call came into the Waco Police Department that would shatter the community's sense of safety. Two teenage boys, fishing near the shores of Lake Waco at Speegleville Park, had stumbled across a scene no one could have imagined. Beneath a tree lay a teenage boy. His hands were bound tightly behind his back, a gag shoved into his mouth, sunglasses still shielding his eyes. His chest had been punctured repeatedly. Moments later, officers discovered two more bodies scattered across the park. In that moment, Lake Waco would forever be etched in the memory of a town that had lost its innocence. In this festive episode of The Writing Life Podcast, crime writer Nicola Upson delves into the themes and appeal of crime novels set at Christmas.   Nicola Upson's debut, An Expert in Murder, was the first in a series of crime novels to feature Josephine Tey — one of Britain's finest Golden Age crime writers – and was dramatised for BBC Radio 4. Several of Nicola's novels have been listed for the CWA Gold and Historical Daggers, and Sorry for the Dead was a Waterstones Thriller of the Month. Praised as a ‘perfect Christmas crime story' by Elly Griffiths, her latest novel The Christmas Clue was published in September 2025.   She sat down with NCW's Caitlin Evans to discuss The Christmas Clue, and how she tackled balancing festive cheer with page-turning twists and deceptive characters. Together, they touch on writing fiction inspired by real people, what drew her to writing a Christmas crime novel, and how to develop the ideal festive setting for a murder mystery.

An Unsolved Case & Its Ghostly Aftermath In June 1948, a young woman named Mary Jane Reed went out on a first date—and never came home. Days later, her body and that of her date, Stanley Skridla, were found murdered outside Oregon, Illinois. Decades of rumors, corruption claims, and unanswered questions turned this cold case into one of Illinois' most chilling mysteries. From a missing skull to reported ghost sightings, my guest, author Ted Gregory, explores the unsolved murder that refuses to stay buried. Prosecutors in the Brian Walshe murder trial are trying to do something extremely rare: prove first-degree murder without a body, without a weapon, and without a confirmed cause of death. Ana Walshe has never been found. But what the Commonwealth does have is a digital trail that reads like a blueprint for premeditated murder — and a defendant positioned to receive $2.7 million in life insurance if his wife died. According to testimony from Massachusetts State Police Trooper Nicholas Guarino, the searches began at 4:52 a.m. on New Year's Day: “Best way to dispose of a body.” Three minutes later: “How long before a body starts to smell.” Over the next several days, the searches continued and escalated — questions about DNA degradation, dismemberment tools, identifying remains with broken teeth, and research into serial killer Patrick Kearney, the so-called “trash bag killer.” Day 5 testimony took the case even deeper. Trooper Connor Keefe read dozens of text messages Brian allegedly sent to Ana's phone for three days after prosecutors say she was already dead. None were delivered. Her phone was never recovered. In court, jurors also saw the tools investigators pulled from a Swampscott dumpster — a hacksaw, hatchet, hammer, shears, tape, even a measuring cup — items prosecutors say Brian used to dismember her body. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins us to assess the strength of the Commonwealth's case, the role of circumstantial evidence in no-body prosecutions, and how the defense is trying to introduce doubt through marital context and investigative missteps. Brian Walshe admits he disposed of Ana's body — but the jury doesn't know that. Now the question is whether the prosecution has enough to prove he killed her. The parents of Jesse Butler's victims are breaking their silence — and what they're revealing is devastating. Jesse Mack Butler, 18, of Stillwater, Oklahoma, pleaded no contest to 11 felony charges including attempted rape, rape by instrumentation, and domestic assault by strangulation against two teenage girls. One victim was strangled until she lost consciousness and required surgery on her neck. Her doctor told her she was 30 seconds away from dying. Police found video on Butler's phone of him strangling the other victim. He faced 78 years in prison. Instead, a judge granted him "youthful offender" status — and he received community service, counseling, and supervision until his 19th birthday. No prison. No sex offender registry. If he complies, his record gets wiped clean. The victims' families say they were never consulted about the plea deal. Both girls were willing to testify. That choice was taken from them. Butler's father is the former Director of Football Operations at Oklahoma State University. The judge who granted youthful offender status holds two degrees from OSU. No direct impropriety has been proven — but the families and protesters are demanding answers. "Community service for this type of crime, that's nothing," one victim's father told Nightline. "People get that for minor crimes." State Rep. J.J. Humphrey is calling for a grand jury investigation. Protesters have surrounded the courthouse at every hearing. And the parents have one message for America: "Love shouldn't hurt." #JesseButler #Stillwater #Oklahoma #TrueCrime #JusticeForSurvivors #YouthfulOffender #NoJailTime #DomesticViolence #TeenDatingViolence #LoveShouldntHurt Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? 1. A Little Taste of Tonight's Case Tonight's story starts exactly where so many good things do: a quiet country town, a family lunch, and a plate of something fancy – beef Wellington. It ends with three people dead, one clinging to life, and an entire nation asking how a dish that sounds like it belongs on MasterChef ended up in the Supreme Court. This episode takes you into the Leongatha mushroom case – the so-called “death cap dinner” – told from my Tale Teller perch, with all the atmosphere, care, and candlelit narration you've come to expect… plus a healthy dollop of “what on earth, humans?” 2. What's Actually in the Episode? A lunch that looked ordinary… and wasn't We start at the table. No gore, no exploitation – just that quiet, uneasy sense that something is off. You'll hear: How a country family lunch in Victoria became international news. Who sat at that table, how they were connected, and why this wasn't strangers in a headline, but an entire web of family history colliding over one meal. I walk you through the day itself like you're there in the corner of the room, watching the plates go down and not yet knowing what they carry. What a death cap actually does to you Then we get a little… biological. I take you inside the body and explain – in proper, story-ified fashion – what happens when you eat a death cap mushroom: The eerie, silent first hours, when your body acts like nothing's wrong while amatoxins quietly slip into your bloodstream. The fake food-poisoning phase – all vomiting and diarrhoea and “oh that's just a nasty bug” – while your liver is secretly being dismantled cell by cell. The false recovery, that cruel moment where the symptoms ease and you think you're on the mend… just as your liver throws in its resignation letter. And finally, the crash: jaundice, confusion, liver failure, the scramble for transplants and ICU care. It's dramatic, it's descriptive, and it's rooted in the real medical picture – because if we're going to be horrified, we may as well be accurately horrified. Inside the relationships and the almost-motive We also pull back from the plate and talk about the human mess behind it all: The long, complicated relationship between Erin and her ex, The money tensions, the child support drama, the messages that went from “family” to “lost cause” in record time, And how the courts actually handled motive – or rather, how they never truly nailed one down. I keep it respectful: we're not here to psychoanalyse a stranger's soul from our couches. But we do explore the emotional landscape that sat behind that lunch, because that's where the story really starts to ache. The sentence, the silence, and the questions We end in the courtroom: the verdicts, the life sentence, and the judge openly admitting that only she knows why. Then I leave you with the questions that linger: Is a murder with no clear motive creepier than one done for money? How much does “why” matter once “what” is already this bad? And who do we trust at our table, really? 3. Thank You, You EPIC, Wonderful Lovelies! I cannot overstate this: you are the reason I get to dig into stories like this properly – slowly, carefully, with time to research, script, narrate, and edit instead of belting them out between life admin and cold tea. Every time you support on Patreon, you're not just “tipping the podcaster” – you're literally funding: The hours it takes to turn a complex case into a coherent, respectful narrative. The hosting, tools, and tea and caffeine supply chain that keep SFGT alive. The space for me to ask, “How do I tell this without turning real pain into entertainment?” – and then actually follow through on that. So thank you: For trusting me with your ears. For backing this strange little corner of the audio world where horror and empathy share the same cup. For letting me sit by your side, late at night, and tell you stories that stay with you long after the episode ends. You are, quite genuinely, the legends who keep the lights on and the kettle boiling. Stay safe, stay curious, and maybe – just for me – don't eat any mysterious mushrooms you find on a weekend wander, yeah? With all the tea and all the thanks, Your Tale Teller

Lost Tycho Brahe and Mrs. Longfellow 1985 TV Pilot Tycho Brahe & Mrs. Longfellow (1985) — "They're in love. With each other. And with danger." Rumble Falls is the kind of sleepy mining town where the neon flickers, the saxophone never sleeps, and somebody is always "accidentally" falling into a shaft. Into this glitter-dusted grit strolls a most 80s power-couple: Tycho Brahe—yes, the 16th-century Danish astronomer with the polished brass nose—reborn by unexplained TV science and forever quoting the heavens, and Mrs. Longfellow—cocktail-wielding socialite, magazine maven, and problem-solver who can spot a murder motive faster than she can finish a bourbon. Think Hart to Hart chemistry, Simon & Simon stakeouts, and Murder, She Wrote coincidence—all poured over crushed ice and served with a cheeky umbrella.   The unaired two-hour pilot drops our lovers into "A Case of Miss Dynamite," where a pageant queen goes boom, a mayor sweats rosewater, and a foreman insists a lit stick of dynamite is a "romance candle." Crane shots you can practically hear, freeze-frame laughs you can definitely feel, and a theme song that says "lighthearted crime show" before the first commercial bumper. Tycho charts trajectories and blood spatter like star maps; Mrs. Longfellow reads people like a society page. The clues point left-handed, the alibis go right out the window, and every time Tycho's about to solve it, she solves him instead. Do they crack the case? Eventually. Do they sizzle? Constantly. (Cue the rim-lit promo still, police tape just out of focus, and a jet that keeps "turning around" for one more kiss.)   In true 80s fashion, the town's brass can't stand them, the townsfolk adore them, and the captions were supposed to explain everything… not that anyone read those during the key change. The result is a gloriously anachronistic, neon-noir valentine to prime-time sleuthing: part telescope, part tumbler, all chemistry.  Credits (1985 pilot) ·         Written & Directed by Tom Konkle ·         Produced by Tom Konkle and Kurtis Bedford (Mindstream Audio) ·         Stephanie Dulli … Mrs. Longfellow ·         Tom Konkle … Tycho Brahe ·         Jude Gerard Prest … Mayor Gribbons ·         Kurtis Bedford … Lt. On the evening of December 30, 2019, 42-year-old Chad Entzel headed out to his weekly bowling league in Bismarck, North Dakota. Friends said he was in good spirits, laughing and joking like always, before heading home for what should have been an ordinary night. But over the next several days, Chad stopped answering calls, didn't show up for work, and seemed to vanish inside his own home - until a 911 call on January 2 reported a fire at the property. When firefighters arrived, they found more than just smoke and flames. Inside the primary bedroom was Chad's body, a propane heater, and a shotgun. At first glance, it looked like a suicide and accidental fire. But as investigators began examining the scene, a very different story emerged involving missing surveillance footage, a sudden insurance policy, and a secret relationship Chad knew nothing about. Here's a little portion of the email she sent us: I'm reaching out because today marks the 13th anniversary of the disappearance and murder of Alicia Moore, a 16-year-old girl from Greenville, Texas. This case deeply impacted my community, but outside of local coverage, Alicia's story hasn't been widely revisited. I feel it's important that her memory and her life are not forgotten — especially around this time of year. So, although we are a few weeks passed the anniversary, JOIN US as we discuss the heartbreaking murder of Alicia Chanta' Moore.RIP to Alicia

The story of Bluebeard has a mostly happy ending, with the killer's newest bride being rescued in the nick of time by her brothers. Good for her, less good for his previous wives, who she'd discovered hanging on hooks from the walls of a bloody closet. There are countless real-life stories of spouses being killed for money, with no muscular siblings breaking down the door with swords in hand. It's much rarer for a killer to make victims of multiple spouses, but the central character in this week's story had the spirit of Bluebeard in his heart, a man who would try to make a career from killing his wives for profit.Sources: Fatal Charm, Carlton SmithA Rose For Her Grave, Ann Rulehttps://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/law-justice/shes-got-her-name-back-teenager-murdered-in-1977-finally-identified-with-new-dna-technique-and-genetic-genealogy/Follow us, campers!Patreon (join to get all episodes ad-free, at least a day early, an extra episode a month, and a free sticker!): https://patreon.com/TrueCrimeCampfirehttps://www.truecrimecampfirepod.com/Facebook: True Crime CampfireInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/truecrimecampfire/?hl=enTwitter: @TCCampfire https://twitter.com/TCCampfireEmail: truecrimecampfirepod@gmail.comMERCH! https://true-crime-campfire.myspreadshop.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-campfire--4251960/support.

Just before midnight on December 6, 1991, an Austin, TX patrol officer called in a fire at a yogurt shop and requested firefighters and additional officers. Once they managed to get the fire under control, firefighters discovered the bodies of four teenage girls in the burned out remains of the building, all having been shot execution style and the building torched to cover up the crime.Almost immediately, investigators on the case ran into a dead end, as leads were scarce and the fire and efforts to extinguish it destroyed or compromised critical evidence. In short time, the case went cold and the residents of Austin moved on. To their surprise, nearly ten years later, Austin detectives announced they'd arrested for young men for the crime, two of whom confessed, and it seemed like, after a long delay, justice would finally be served; however, in this case, justice was still a long way off and when it finally arrived, it came tainted by police misconduct.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1992. In 1931 Liverpool, a bizarre phone call sent William Herbert Wallace on a wild goose chase across the city. The caller, a man named "Qualtrough," had left a message for him at his chess club, asking him to meet at a non-existent address. When William returned home, he found his wife, Julia, brutally murdered in their parlor. The house was locked, there were no signs of forced entry, and the timeline seemed impossibly tight.   Police immediately suspected William, believing the phone call was a ruse to create a fake alibi. He was quickly arrested, tried, and convicted, only to have the verdict overturned in an unprecedented move by the Court of Criminal Appeal. For nearly a century, the case has remained one of Britain's greatest unsolved mysteries. Was William a cunning killer who almost got away with it, or an innocent man framed by a phantom?   New episodes every Tuesday and Thursday!   Follow us on Instagram: @momsandmysteries   Join our Patreon: patreon.com/momsandmysteries   Visit our website: momsandmysteries.com   #TrueCrime #Podcast #MomsAndMysteries #JuliaWallace #UnsolvedMysteries #HistoricalCrime #Liverpool #LockedRoomMystery
