This week, in Starkville, Mississippi, a marriage that has a lot of bumps, along the way, including one of the children not actually belonging to the husband, explodes in violence, and terrible excuses. Even an appearence on the talk show "Montell Williams" couldn't solve their problems, but a murder ends everything. All signs point to the wife, but she blames it on her teen brother, and the prosecution blames them both, even claiming a strange, incestuous relationship between the siblings! Does the truth ever come out?? Along the way, we find out that no town should attach the word "Vegas" to their name, and expect us to believe it, that daytime talk shows may not be the best alternative to marriage counseling, and that you can only blame so much on others, before you start to look ridiculous!! Clair Titley, director of the three-part Hulu true-crime docuseries Friends Like These: The Murder of Skylar Neese, and Dr. Rob Ambrosini, forensic psychologist and FBI polygraph expert who questioned the two teenage perpetrators in the case. The series revisits the 2012 disappearance and murder of 16-year-old Skylar Neese in West Virginia, a case that stunned the country when it was revealed that Skylar had been killed by her two best friends. The Hulu series examines the shocking betrayal at the heart of the crime, tracing the investigation through social media footprints, evolving digital evidence, and what was, at the time, a new frontier in digital forensics. Through interviews with investigators, family members, and experts, the docuseries explores how teenage dynamics, secrecy, and online communication played a critical role in both the crime and its eventual unraveling. In 2006, University of Miami football player Bryan Pata was shot outside his apartment coming home from practice. On the ten-year anniversary of the death, police invited ESPN to look into the cold case. The reporters found cops had many viable suspects, including a teammate with a compelling motive and shaky alibi. But the journalists also came to find their law enforcement sources to be unreliable partners, and eventually their story turned into both a quest to find Pata's killer and an investigation into the investigation. From ESPN's 30 for 30 Podcasts comes “Murder at the U.” Host Paula Levine takes listeners through her team's exhaustive multiyear reporting into Pata's death and its many suspects. With a murder trial about to begin in Florida, the podcast also focuses on the police and prosecutors who started as collaborators on their reporting, but eventually became impediments. About 40 minutes later, Libby posted a picture on her Snapchat account showing Abby carefully walking across the bridge. Why kill when you could just leave? The Kouri Richins case demands we answer that question.Prosecutors allege Richins poisoned her husband Eric with fentanyl—and that this wasn't her first attempt. She allegedly stood to collect nearly two million dollars in life insurance while pursuing an affair. Exit strategies existed. Divorce was available. But according to prosecutors, she allegedly chose murder instead.Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins True Crime Today to examine the psychology of partners who allegedly cross this line. With over thirty years working with both victims and perpetrators of violence, Scott breaks down the internal logic that makes murder feel rational to someone in this mindset. We analyze the language prosecutors allege Kouri used—feeling "stuck" and "trapped" in the marriage, believing it would be "better if Eric died." What does that tell us about how she perceived her options? Was it genuine hopelessness or calculated framing? We examine the method of poisoning itself. It's not impulsive. It requires planning, patience, and watching suffering without intervening. Multiple alleged attempts mean multiple deliberate decisions. What kind of psychology sustains that? And we look at what prosecutors allege came after: the children's book about grief, the television appearances, the public performance of widowhood. Forensic experts describe this as performing one role while enacting its opposite. How does that compartmentalization work?Essential psychological analysis for understanding not just what allegedly happened in this case, but why.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Content warning: murder. The latest season of ESPN's 30 for 30 Podcasts tells the story of a murder that stunned the world of college football, but then inexplicably went cold. In 2006, Brian Pata, a 22-year-old Rising University of Miami football star was executed in broad daylight, steps from campus and months from realizing his NFL dreams. No murder weapon was found, witnesses were missing, and of what statements could be gathered, some were conflicting. Leads came and went. For nearly a decade, Brian Pata's murder sat unresolved, a long-dormant case defined more by rumor than evidence. Until years later, an ESPN investigation would take a hard look at the case, uncovering long buried details and raising questions that many had stopped asking. What they discovered thrust a long dormant case back into the spotlight. Now, nearly two decades later, a former teammate stands trial. Murder at the U is a story about loyalty, betrayal, and truth buried in plain sight. The season is about a family that never stops seeking justice. Find Murder at the U on the 30 for 30 Podcasts feed wherever you listen to podcasts, and prepare yourself for an ending you didn't see coming.Thirty for Thirty Podcasts:https://30for30podcasts.com/Thirty for Thirty Podcasts on Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/30-for-30-podcasts/id1244784611Thirty for Thirty: Murder at the U Trailer on Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/introducing-murder-at-the-u/id1244784611?i=1000746832310
In the winter of 1896, a headless body was found in a Kentucky field. What solved the mystery wasn't a confession or a face, but a pair of custom-made shoes traced back to a respectable Indiana family. The murder of Pearl Bryan became a national spectacle, a Gilded Age scandal, and eventually a ghost story. But beneath the ballads and basement legends lies something colder: a crime defined not by what was found… but by what was never recovered. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Why murder instead of divorce? That's the question the Kouri Richins case forces us to confront.Prosecutors allege Kouri Richins poisoned her husband Eric with fentanyl, that she made multiple attempts before the one that killed him, and that she stood to gain nearly two million dollars in life insurance while carrying on an affair. But financial motive doesn't explain the psychology. Plenty of people want out of marriages with money at stake. What makes someone decide killing is the answer?Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott examines the internal logic of partners who allegedly choose murder over leaving. With over three decades working with both victims and perpetrators of violence, Scott breaks down what makes this choice feel rational to the person making it.We analyze the language prosecutors allege Kouri used—feeling "stuck" and "trapped," believing it would be "better if Eric died." We examine what that framing reveals about how someone in this mindset perceives their options and their spouse. We look at the method. Poisoning requires sustained deception, repeated attempts, watching suffering without intervening. It's not impulsive—it's calculated. Forensic experts call this "proactive staging" where the murder method becomes the alibi. What type of personality chooses this approach? And we examine the alleged performance that followed. Writing a children's book about grief. Appearing on television as a mourning mother. Performing widowhood publicly while allegedly knowing the truth. How does someone compartmentalize at that level?Part 1 of a two-part series on the psychology of partner homicide. Part 2 shifts perspective to the victim's experience.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In September 2023, police officers walked into house on Pump Hill in the village of Great Baddow, Essex. Standing in front of them was 35-year-old Virginia McCullough, who appeared calm and composed. But within moments, she was telling them her parents were dead, and that their bodies were still inside the house. For four years, John and Lois McCullough had seemingly vanished. Family was told they'd moved to the seaside. Friends were told they were unwell. Birthday cards and text messages still arrived. Pensions were still being paid. To the outside world, it looked like two elderly parents enjoying a quiet retirement, but behind drawn curtains, a very different reality had been sitting undisturbed since June 2019.Exclusive content:Patreon - Ad Free, Early Access, Exclusive EpisodesFollow the show:British Murders with Stuart BluesDisclaimer:The case discussed in this podcast episode is real and represents the worst day in many people's lives. On this week's episode of True Crime New England, Katie and Liz dive into a relatively well-known case in recent Massachusetts history. In February of 2021, 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore, who was 3 months pregnant, was found dead in her Canton apartment. She had recently found out she was pregnant and was so excited to be a mom. Her body was found with a duffel bag strap around her neck and tied to a doorknob, appearing as if she had committed suicide. It took three years for her death to be ruled a homicide, and this resulted in the subsequent arrest of former Stoughton Police Department officer Matthew Farwell, a man who had been grooming Sandra for almost a decade. While his trial is set to occur in October of 2026, the evidence mounting against him is damning as Sandra's family waits for justice for their loved one's murder.

The Kouri Richins trial raises a question that goes beyond the courtroom: why would someone allegedly choose murder when divorce is always an option?Prosecutors allege Richins poisoned her husband Eric with fentanyl, that she made multiple attempts before succeeding, and that she stood to collect nearly two million in life insurance while having an affair. The facts are damning if proven. But the psychology is what makes this case resonate—the internal logic that allegedly made killing feel like the rational choice.Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott joins Hidden Killers Live to break down the psychology of partners who choose murder over leaving. With thirty years of experience working with violent offenders, Scott examines what makes this choice feel justified to the person making it.We analyze the language prosecutors allege Kouri used in describing her marriage—feeling "stuck" and "trapped," believing things would be "better if Eric died." What does that framing reveal about perception and justification? We examine the method. Poisoning isn't rage—it's calculation. It requires planning, patience, and the ability to watch suffering without stopping it. Multiple alleged attempts means multiple decisions to continue. What psychology sustains that pattern? And we look at the performance prosecutors allege followed: the children's book, the TV appearances, the public grief. How does someone perform mourning for a death they allegedly caused?Join us live for expert psychological analysis of one of the most disturbing aspects of domestic homicide—the mindset that makes murder feel like a solution.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Blayne Alexander sits down with Keith Morrison to discuss his original series, “Murder & Magnolias.” In 2017, a bitter divorce between prominent Charleston, South Carolina, couple Chris and Nancy Latham spiraled into a murder-for-hire investigation that stunned the community. Blayne and Keith break down the key moments in the case, including the unlikely person who helped authorities crack it, and the “hit packet” that brought the plot into focus. Plus, Dateline producer Carol Gable joins the conversation to discuss where Nancy Latham is today and what it took to report the story. Keith also talks about what -- if any -- his aspirations were before getting into journalism, and the team reflects on some of their most dangerous moments in the field. Plus, they answer viewer and listener questions. Have a question for Talking Dateline? DM us @DatelineNBC or leave a voicemail at (212) 413-5252. We start this week in New Zealand where a man goes ghost hunting in the supposedly very haunted former Napier Prison. Did he have an intense encounter with building's most infamous spirit? Then, Dan shares three smaller tales: first involves two people hanging out alone in a park at night, having a very strange, dangerous, and disturbing encounter. Then we get a creepy baby monitor story. And the lastly, a series of confusing and disturbing texts between two people freaks us out! Lynze has her usual two tales this week. The first takes us to the middle of nowhere for a possible UFO encounter with lasting affects. Her second story brings us a haunted house that seems to be trying to tell someone something. 1975 - Concord, New Hampshire. In May 1975, a rent collector knocked on the door of 22-year-old Judith Lord's apartment. There was no answer—only the sound of her baby crying. When he went inside, he found Judy dead in her upstairs bedroom. From the beginning, police had suspects. The case moved quickly. An arrest felt imminent. But then, a single scientific conclusion shifted the trajectory of the investigation. What should have been a straight path to justice became a decades-long detour. This is a story about a young mother, a community shaken, and a murder investigation steered off course by flawed forensics—a mistake that cost years, and a resolution that came far too late. When James Garfield won the presidential election, Charles Guiteau was ecstatic. He was certain that he'd played a major role in Garfield's victory. So, fueled by delusion, Charles Guiteau began hounding James Garfield for a political appointment.Meanwhile, New York Senator and political boss Roscoe Conkling threw a temper tantrum. James Garfield had the tenacity to fill his cabinet with members of his *own* choosing. That made Roscoe mad. So? He hatched a plan. A very stupid plan.Remember, kids, history hoes always cite their sources! Georgia has no safe storage law. A 14-year-old can legally possess a long gun. Colin Gray didn't technically break any gun laws by giving his son an AR-15 for Christmas. So how is he now facing 180 years on second-degree murder charges?Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta breaks down the legal strategy prosecutors are using against Colin Gray—and whether it can survive scrutiny. The facts are bad. The FBI visited Colin Gray's home in May 2023 after his son made threats on Discord. Body cam footage shows Gray telling deputies "God, I knew it" within minutes of the Apalachee High School shooting. He also said he'd been trying to get his son into counseling. Bob analyzes how those statements play with a jury—and whether they're admission of knowledge or a father's horror. The Crumbleys set a precedent in Michigan with manslaughter convictions—10 to 15 years each. Georgia went further with second-degree murder. Colin Gray faces 180 years. That gap shows how Georgia views this case—and what it could mean for parents nationwide.Karen McDonald—the prosecutor who got the Crumbley convictions—said her reaction to Colin Gray being charged was "rage." She said the Crumbley case was never meant to open the floodgates. Legal experts warn this precedent could be applied unevenly, potentially disproportionately against families without resources. Bob addresses whether there's any limiting principle. The kid's history is chaotic: DFCS involvement, school-hopping, swastikas, searched "how to kill your dad" on a school computer, missed his entire eighth-grade year. Does all that make the father look negligent—or create reasonable doubt he could have predicted this?Bob breaks down whether we're watching the rules change in real time.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? When we talk about domestic abuse, there's a narrative people expect. This case doesn't fit it. In this week's episode of Seeing Red, we examine the murder of James Self — a man killed by his female partner after what those close to them describe as a volatile and controlling relationship. We look at how abuse can look different when the victim is male. The warning signs that are often dismissed. The cultural blind spots that make it harder for men to be believed — or even to recognise what's happening to them in the first place. Domestic abuse isn't defined by gender. It's defined by control, fear, and escalation. And when we fail to recognise that, people slip through the cracks. www.patreon.com/seeingredpodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/seeingredtw www.seeingredpodcast.co.uk Theme music arranged and composed by Holly-Jane Shears: www.soundcloud.com/DeadDogInBlackBag Learn more about your ad choices. When Chris Kraus became fixated on a murder case in a Minnesotan town, she decided to try her hand at a true crime novel ... but the project soon evolved into something much bigger. The Four Spent The Day Together weaves together the stories of an impulsive murder carried out by three teens, a marriage torn apart by addiction and the reality of life in working class America. Much like Chris's hit novel I Love Dick, the story and its protagonist draw heavily from her own life experiences. This week, Chris tells Mattea Roach about her interest in the crime, how addiction can shape a relationship and why she's finally exploring her childhood in fiction.Liked this conversation? Those who knew Willie Pickton described him as mentally slow and socially awkward. They said he smelled like the pig farm where he lived and wore dirty clothes. Some considered him a friend, but others found him creepy. Only a few suspected what Willie did in his spare time. Sources Butts, Edward. “Robert Pickton Case.” October 8, 2020. Last night's State of the Union was more than a speech—it was a generational moment in American politics. President Trump delivered a series of powerful, viral-ready moments exposing Democratic inaction, prioritizing illegal immigrants over American citizens' safety, and celebrating major policy victories. From reduced fentanyl deaths to lower crime rates, Republicans stood and cheered while Democrats sat in silence, glaring. Trump highlighted the fundamental duty of government: protect American citizens first. This episode breaks down the shocking reactions, social media-optimized delivery, and why this speech will reverberate for years.
For seven years, Lewis Lent worked as a janitor at a movie theater in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He volunteered his time helping the blind. He studied the Bible and became an ordained minister. He mentored neighborhood kids who called him "the Big Brother." And behind that mask of kindness, he was hunting, abducting, and murdering children across the northeastern United States. In this episode, we trace the full story of Lewis Lent from his troubled childhood in rural upstate New York through his nomadic years drifting across Florida, New Mexico, and the Northeast, to the horrific crimes that would eventually define him.We cover the nineteen ninety abduction and murder of twelve year old Jimmy Bernardo from a Pittsfield strip mall, the nineteen ninety two disappearance of sixteen year old Jamie Lusher in Westfield, Massachusetts, and the nineteen ninety three kidnapping, rape, and murder of twelve year old Sara Anne Wood in Sauquoit, New York.We also tell the story of the girl who stopped him. Twelve year old Becky Savarese, who faked losing her breath and slipped out of her backpack to escape Lent at gunpoint on a frozen January morning in nineteen ninety four. Her courage and quick thinking cracked open cases that had gone cold for years and ended a predator's reign of terror. This episode covers the massive multi-state investigation, the three day interrogation that produced Lent's chilling confessions, his so-called "master plan" to imprison children in a hidden room in his apartment, and the courtroom proceedings that put him away for life.We also examine the thirty year search for Sara Anne Wood's body, a search that continues to this day because Lewis Lent refuses to tell her family where he buried their daughter. If you have any information about the whereabouts of Sara Anne Wood or Jamie Lusher, please contact the New York State Police Troop D Headquarters at 315-366-6000.

The Colin Gray trial could change parental liability law across America. Prosecutors charged second-degree murder—not manslaughter like the Crumbleys. He's facing 180 years. Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta joins us live to break down what's happening in Georgia and what it means going forward. The facts are brutal. The FBI visited Colin Gray's home in May 2023 after his son made threats on Discord. Body cam footage shows Gray saying "God, I knew it" within minutes of the Apalachee High School shooting. He also said he'd been trying to get his son into counseling. Bob analyzes how those statements cut both ways—and which way a jury is likely to lean. Here's the legal problem prosecutors face: Georgia has no safe storage law. A 14-year-old can legally possess a long gun there. Colin Gray didn't technically break any gun laws by giving his kid that AR-15. So how do you charge someone with murder when the underlying conduct was legal? Bob walks through the prosecution's theory and the defense's best counterargument. The sentencing gap is staggering. The Crumbleys got 10-15 years for manslaughter in Michigan. Colin Gray faces 180 years in Georgia. That exposure changes everything about how this case gets tried.Karen McDonald—the prosecutor who secured the Crumbley convictions—said her reaction to Colin Gray being charged was "rage." She said the Crumbley case was never meant to open the floodgates. Experts warn this could be applied disproportionately against families without resources. Bob addresses whether there's any limiting principle.Join us live as we analyze whether the rules are changing in real time for parents across the country.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
