POPULARITY
How in the world did an independent puppet-movie production land such an amazing cast? Sam Koji Hale's mystical, dark-fantasy, adventure movie certainly makes an impression in the Nexus.
Why are puppets just for kids? Chris asks Ben about why puppetry is so rarely used to tell stories for broader audiences like in The Dark Crystal, Yamasong, and Thunderbirds.
We have the creator of Yamasong, Sam Hale guesting as we discuss the feature length and short of the world of Yamasong! The post Popmosis Ep 4 – Yamasong: March of the Hollows appeared first on The Grand Geek Gathering.

Her new book The Lady From The Black Lagoon tells the unknown tale of Millicent Patrick, the woman responsible for designing the most iconic creature in cinema history The subheading on Mallory's book speaks of "Hollywood monsters" and she's not just talking about the foam latex kind. In this episode we discuss Mallory's experience in the film biz where many scary things exist. Fear not, though. Mallory shines a light on it all from women in film to social media. On today’s episode of the Needless Things Podcast Dave talks to Sam Koji Hale, director and creative force behind the new feature film Yamasong: March of the Hollows! Yamasong: March of the Hollows brings the audience into a magical world unlike any other. On the planet Yamasong live races of fantastical creatures, like the mountain dwelling ram-like Ovis, or the peaceful turtle warrior clan of the Terrapin. Fish fly, monsters breath clouds and gods swim through the ocean depths. Yamasong follows an automaton girl and tortoise warrior that journey with a band of outlaws on an incredible quest. Their one hope to defeat a sinister mechanized army and save the creatures of their world is to find a legendary relic. Yamasong: March of Hollows is the epic puppet storytelling tradition of Dark Crystal meets Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke. Dark Dunes Productions and Taormina Films have partnered with filmmaker Sam Koji Hale to help realize this fantastical puppet vision, with a screenplay by novelist Ekaterina Sedia. Listen in as Dave and Sam discuss everything from the art of puppetry to 80s toy lines to building fantastical worlds in cinema! By far, this is the wackiest, uber-geekiest Damn Dirty Geeks podcast episode ever, thanks in part to our special guest Sultan Saeed Al Darmaki, whose own geek cred is extensive as you'll find out when he joins in singing "deep cuts" from Saturday morning cartoon theme songs with the DDG team! Not only do we revisit classic TV animation including JOHNNY QUEST with other Hanna Barbera and Japanese anime series, this episode also expands into geek discussions of PLANET OF THE APES, comedic comparisons of THE ODD COUPLE in its various forms, and the 1966 BATMAN series starring Adam West. Sultan, founder of Dark Dunes Productions, served as executive producer of the upcoming horror film HARBINGER DOWN directed by StudioADI's Alec Gillis, director of the upcoming horror comedy KIDS VS. MONSTERS, and produced the upcoming fantasy feature film YAMASONG; MARCH OF THE HOLLOWS featuring the voices of Abigail Breslin, Nathan Fillion, Malcolm McDowell, Peter Weller and George Takei. Now, thanks to his appearance on DDG, Sultan can add to his credits a wonderful duet with our Frank Woodward singing "Suddenly" from XANADU which has to be heard to be believed. Though we're releasing this "Episode 005" out of chronological order in recording dates, this show marked the DDG podcast debut of our own Trish Geiger who dove right into the geek deep end with the rest of us. This delay is partly due to the massive amount of audio mixing it took to present this very cast-crowded episode, but the results are worth the wait! So activate your supergeek powers and join this wild ride through Saturday morning cartoons and pop culture entertainment, won't you? Please Like and Share this new episode with your geek friends on Facebook and Twitter to help spread the word! We thank you.
