Ep 608: The Grape Miniseries -- The Barbera Refresh

Wine for Normal People

Barbera is one of Italy's most widely planted red grapes and an essential part of Piemontese wine culture. It is native to the Monferrato hills, where it has been grown for centuries and important to the overall wine landscape of the region. Adaptable, drought-resistant, and capable of producing everything from bright, food-friendly, everyday wines to serious oak-aged bottles, Barbera has spread beyond its homeland — to California, Argentina, Australia and more. A grower's and winemaker's favorite grape for its easygoing nature in the vineyard and the winery, in the glass, Barbera takes many forms. From acidic and fruity to oaked with darker fruit and spice, it is food-friendly, pairing with everything from braised meat to pizza.   As in all the grape miniseries, I cover the DNA of the grape (a fairly recent discovery and kind of a funny story), its history, its behavior in the vineyard and winery, aromas and flavors of the grape and regions in Italy and abroad that make Barbera.  Much has happened with Barbera since I last discussed it in 2018 -- take a listen and hear the latest!    Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. Join the community today! www.patreon.com/winefornormalpeople _______________________________________________________________   This show is brought to you by my exclusive sponsor, Wine Access – THE place to discover your next favorite bottle. Linda Stasi is synonymous with NY media royalty. She's a well known critic and columnist for the NY Post. She is also a familiar face on the NY1 News Channel, and has appeared on the Today Show, The View, CBS Morning Show, among others. And we're thrilled to have her join us to talk about her latest book The Descendant: a historical family saga based on her own Sicilian-American ancestors, following the Barbera family from Sicily to the Colorado mines and eventually to the Mafia in Brooklyn. The story blends real history with folklore, and focuses on the resilience of the family, particularly strong women, as they navigate poverty, violence, and the American dream. Let's just say it's got all the right elements of adventure, crime, and magical realism. I see a film here. Throughout our interview, we will also discuss Staci's Italian roots and the strong bond we all share as Italians and Italian Americans. There's something about Traci that I totally relate to, perhaps it's the journalist in me or the Italian family bonds. Whatever it is, she's got some incredible stories to share, and I'm thrilled to bring them to you. This episode features Livermore Valley winemaker and consultant Meredith Saboraria for a wide-ranging conversation recorded on location in the heart of the appellation. A proud self-described "Livermoron," Meredith traces her path from tasting room work in the late 1990s to earning her Viticulture and Enology degree at Las Positas College and building her consulting business, Barrel Down Wine Services. Along the way, she paints a vivid portrait of Livermore's wine country — from the outsized influence of Wente and Measure D on land preservation, to the region's sandy loam soils, marine-influenced climate, and its newly adopted signature varietals: Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc. She also shares candid insights into the valley's growing community of female winemakers and the collective they've built to support one another. The conversation then shifts to winemaking craft, with Meredith diving deep on the challenges of working with high-acid Barbera, her philosophy of balance over manipulation, techniques for punch-downs in macro bins and T-bins, and the smart use of enzymes during fermentation. Jim and Meredith also preview an upcoming Inside Winemaking group trip to Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California — Mexico's oldest New World wine region — where Meredith has traveled three times and serves as the group's guide. She covers everything from crossing the border by shuttle to the region's savory, marine-influenced wines, its world-class restaurants, and the exciting mix of traditional and modern winemaking happening in the valley. The episode closes with Meredith sharing the childhood smells of Livermore that still bring her home.   Resources from this Episode Barrel Down Wine Services Inside Winemaking's Feb 2027 Trip to Valle de Guadalupe   This podcast is sponsored by InnoVint. Buckle up, we're heading back out into wine country, this time to the intriguing Adelaide Hills wine region in South Australia. It gets talked about a lot - but what's it really all about? Is it all about piercing, textural Chardonnay? Or fine sparkling wine? What about the perfumed Pinot Noir, the scented Shiraz..? And let's not forget the likes of Gruner Veltliner, Nebbiolo, Gamay, Barbera, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and all those natural wines. There's a real buzz around the Adelaide Hills - but how to get our heads round it all?!Happily, we have some brilliant guides in the shape of Brian Croser (Tapanappa), David LeMire MW (Shaw + Smith), Emma Wood (Wirra Wirra), Kelly Wellington (Hahndorf Hill), Liam Van Pelt (Ashton Hills), Peter Saturno (Longview) and Xavier Bizot (Daosa/Tapanappa). (Thanks also to the Adelaide Hills Wine Region for making this sponsored episode happen and giving us access to such great producers.) They talk us through things like altitude, rain, field blends, magic, wine tourism, French arrogance, organics and 'thoughtful' wines. There's even the odd bold claim (about Chardonnay) and intriguing revelation of a long-held secret (a 'subterfuge story' no less!) Oh, and we touch on why, 'people don't want to drink like their dads.'Thanks for tuning in. We love to hear from you so please do get in touch! Send us a voice message via Speakpipe. Bottle Barn Picks Showing New Trends, with Dan Berger

We have a selection of Bottle Barn picks from Dan Berger on California Wine Country with Dan and Daedalus Howell today, wines that Dan says show a trend in the retail wine business. He has brought selections from Bottle Barn that will illustrate this new direction. Dan Berger is our weekly co-host and has also been featured on the show, such as this episode about Gamay Beaujolais. Many younger consumers are looking for something different. Instead of dwelling on doom and gloom because of low sales, there is an opportunity to reset the industry and to rethink things. As consumers change, the industry needs to adapt to changing tastes and provide more variety. Dan calls it a Return to Reality. So, for example, we have seen a rebirth of Chenin Blanc in the last 10 years. Barry Herbst, wine buyer at Bottle Barn, makes sure that the store has lots of choices for people looking for something new. ++++ CWC is brought to you by Deodora Estate Vineyards. Visit Deodora to discover 72 acres in the Petaluma Gap that are producing exceptional Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling. Sip the difference ! ++++ Esporão, Assyrtyko and Pigato The first taste is Esporão, a Portuguese white wine made in the style of Chardonnay. It is aged in wood, but delicately. It has only 13.5% ABV. The region is near the Atlantic Ocean in a cool area. It’s a 2020 and still fresh. It was $30 at first release, but now it is $12.99. The wine has the aging that it needs, it’s ready to drink. The next tasting is a 2024 Assyrtyko. It is a Greek grape that grows primarily in Greece. But this one is from Jim Barry Wines in Claire Valley in Australia. It sells for about $24 at Bottle Barn. Dan thinks the next wave of interest in wine will not be from collectors. There will have to be more diversity in the choices of wines, varieties and origins. Wine today is better than it has ever been around the world, because of better grape growing and better technology. Then they taste a 2024 Pigato from Liguria from the Durin label. It has some lemon blossom in the aroma. It’s delicious and has a lot of personality. Pigato only grows in Italy in Piedmont and Liguria, both are cool climates. Wine makers need to plant grapes like Pigato here in California. Pithos Rosso and Verduno Pelaverga Next is a red, Pithos Rosso. The bottle is 750 ml but has a squat shape. The grape variety is Nero d’Avola and is native to Sicily. The label says both Italy and Sicily. It is red, but light and delicious and not particularly tannic. Last is a 2024 Verduno Pelaverga from Fratelli Alessandria. It is a light grape from the Piemonte province, where Barolo and Barbera also grow. Pelaverga was planted as a blending grape. After 1945, they sent cuttings to UC Davis. Then, the vineyard was bulldozed and became extinct in Italy. But UC Davis had cuttings and now they have replanted it in Italy. It is as light as a Rosé but it has the taste and flavor of red wine. It’s Dan’s favorite recent discovery. Bottle Barn has it for $29.95, down from $45. It has the flavor profile of a good Barolo. Black pepper, violets, green herb, “complexity without knowing what it is.” Pelaverga is very rare here. The importer is North Berkeley Imports. Dan says they are committed to the wines they import.

Expect producer recommendations, travel tips, value alternatives to Barolo - and yes, a little Nebbiolo obsession too.   04:04 Why Langhe? Herunder produktionsmetode, høsttidspunkt, vækstområde m.m.   Vi tager udgangspunkt i Wine Follys liste, men laver vores egen rangering.

Dr. Mary Barbera answers the top questions about stimming and scripting in children with autism, explaining why they happen and when to be concerned. Stimming isn't bad, but when it's constant, unsafe, or disruptive, it's time to take action. Instead of trying to stop vocal stimming directly, Dr. Barbera recommends teaching language, play, and daily-living skills so stimming naturally decreases over time. Learn when to let it be, when to intervene, and how to use stimming as a clue to better support your child.

(1:38 - 2:48) Jacob introduces the 2022 Italian Affair, a blend of Barbera and Teroldego. The unique combination offers juiciness and balance. The name stems from his father's decision to plant Italian varietals, which his mother jokingly called "cheating" on their Rhone roots. (2:49 - 5:25) Mounts Family Winery grows 35 varietals, including Rhone, Italian, Spanish, and Bordeaux grapes. Jacob explains the importance of experimenting with heat-tolerant varietals like Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional to adapt to climate change and appeal to younger wine drinkers. His time away gave him a renewed appreciation for winemaking and the natural beauty of vineyards. (9:15 - 12:21) Jacob discusses the challenges of engaging younger wine drinkers, citing high tasting fees and lack of approachability. He advocates for making wine fun and accessible, encouraging people to enjoy it however they like. (12:22 - 14:45) The conversation shifts to the importance of storytelling in wine. Jacob believes sharing the history and personal stories behind a bottle creates a deeper connection for consumers, especially younger generations. (18:08 - 21:06) Jacob talks about his family's Rhone roots and their Viognier, which expresses stone fruit and honeysuckle notes. He also praises Grenache and Cab Franc as standout varietals in their portfolio. (21:07 - 24:00) Mounts Family Winery is open for tastings by appointment during the week and walk-ins on weekends. Jacob and his mother personally host tastings, offering a welcoming and intimate experience. Can You Tell a Difference in a Barbera from Asti?

Asti is a town in the Piemonte region of Italy. It is a DOCG-recognized wine area, the highest level in Italy. I have heard that specifically looking for a Barbera from Asti is worth the search. Tonight, we will check out this theory.Barbera has a deep ruby color, light to medium body, and is known for its high acid levels. In the past it was known for being a high-production, every-day drinking wine. However, during the past twenty or thirty years, it has become a more serious wine variety, and many different styles can be found. Producers have started aging Barbera in barrels and producing the wine from vineyards with lower yields, which concentrates the juice. The DOC's have different maximum yield levels, and Asti has the lowest production levels. The best Asti vineyards are planted with Barbera. The best Alba (a nearby town) vineyards are reserved for Nebbiolo.A tell for the style might be the alcohol level. A less concentrated Barbera may have an alcohol content of 11-12%, while a richer, more intense wine can be 13% or higher. Tonight, our two wines are:2022 Lavignone Barbera D'Asti. I purchased this wine from Gateway Market in Des Moines for $24.99. According to the Wine Enthusiast, the nose on this wine jumps out of the glass with intense aromas of blueberries and plums, followed by violets and warm savory spices. The palate is very primary, with juicy and candied blackberries in the forefront, accompanied by subtle herbal and earthy notes that emerge and recede, finishing with energetic acidity. It received a score of 87 from the Wine Enthusiast, and has 13.5% alcohol. Cooper's Hawk Barbera features a deep ruby color with a nose of boysenberry, sour cherry, tobacco, and nutmet shifting to a palate with tart berries, full tannins, and noticeable acidity on a persistent finish. It is described as medium-bodied with lively acidity, and the fruit intensity offers notes of ripe cherry and raspberry, with subtle spice and earthiness, and a soft, smooth finish. We both loved the Barbera d'Asti, and rated it a 4. So the next time you want an Italian wine, give it a try.Next week, we will blind taste three differently priced white wines and see if we can find a good affordable white wine.

Tonight, we are tasting the 2023 Kirkland California Signature Cabernet Sauvignon box wine. To make the tasting more interesting and less biased, we will blindly taste against a bottle of Cabernet. This is a 3L box. A typical bottle is ¾ of a L, so it is the equivalent of 4 bottles. They say the box will last 4-6 weeks after opening, but expect it to be half that long.Tonight, our three wines are:2023 Kirkland Signature California Cabernet Sauvignon. I purchased this 3L box from Costco for $15.99. According to tastings.com https://www.tastings.com/ Dark garnet color. Aromas and flavors of black plum, leather and clove, pepper and purple flowers, and cedar and herbs with a velvety, lively, dry medium body and a tingling, appealing, medium-length finish displaying overtones of black cherry, black currant and boysenberry, herbs, and leather and spice with medium, well-integrated tannins and a suggestion of oak flavor. Approachable but still Cabernet fruit dominant; this is what California table wine should be. This wine received a 93 rating from The Wine Enthusiast and was a “Best Buy”. The Wine Enthusiast says Juicy flavors of red fruit and black cherry with notes of lightly spiced oak and a soft finish. 2019 The Seventy Five Wine Company Cabernet Sauvignon Feliz Creek Vineyard. This was purchased from Costco for around $20. It received an 86 from the Wine Enthusiast. It says bay-leaf, clove and juicy plum flavors give this smooth, medium-bodied wine a savory profile. From The Winemaker: Grown in Mendocino and Lake Counties, this Cabernet is filled with aromas of fresh cherry and cinnamon. On the palate, it's silky smooth with notes of strawberry and blackberry, culminating in a long, lingering finish with just a hint of dark chocolate from a year spent aging on French oak.We found both wines very drinkable, but we both preferred the Kirkland Signature Box Wine. We rated both wines a 3, but I was close to a 4 on the box wine. The Feliz Creek Vineyard wine was fruit-forward and oaky. Denise had a hard time with the Feliz Creek Wine and its higher alcohol level (14.8%). I found the Kirkland to have better balance, more earthiness, and better wine. Next week, can you tell the difference between a Barbera from anywhere and a (DOCG) Barbera d'Asti? We will find out.

When you think of red wine from Piedmont, you likely think of Nebbiolo or Barbera, but did you know that for a long time, Grignolino was the preferred red wine from the region? Wait, you've never heard of Grignolino before?!? Well, that is the perfect reason to go on this Italian Wine Adventure! A light red wine from maybe the most revered wine region in Italy, Grignolino is a wine some are saying is the hidden gem of Piedmont. The name of the wine comes from the fact that it has more seeds than most wine grapes, which doesn't sound important but actually is when you consider that tannins and some flavors come from the seeds themselves. It is a great red wine to chill, and the combination of crunchy red fruit and grippy tannins is an experience to help you stretch your wine horizons. We also talk to listener Justin about his name for our wine tribe and we talk about wine in French prisons in our Wine in the News This Week section. Nancy and Garry Rodrigue started Rodrigue Molyneaux Winery in 2004 with a passion for making the best wine possible in the Livermore Valley – a cornerstone of California wine. Today, Nancy and Garry aim to share that message and their Italian and Bordeaux-style wines with visitors near and far. Twenty-five years ago, we reclaimed land from 120-year-old dormant vineyards because we knew Italian and French Bordeaux-style grapes would thrive in this acclaimed terroir. We started with a block of Cabernet Sauvignon, and soon expanded into more Italian and French-style wines. Barbera was our first Italian single varietal, and we believe what put us on the map for cultivating unique and hard-to-find varietals. We created an environment for our wine lovers to bask in nature with a California drought-resistant garden that continually receives accolades from local designers and horticulture specialists. When we first started, we sold RM wine mostly to friends. Now, we are proud of our loyal guests and Club Members who allow us to thrive and improve our winery at every opportunity we can. Our Tasting Room and our Clubhouse, where we hold staff and release events for our Club Members, both pay homage to the evolving Livermore wine story. Today, we still harvest and lovingly craft Cabernet Sauvignon and Barbera, along with Petit Verdot and Nebbiolo. For non-estate grapes, we buy only Livermore fruit, usually within a few miles of our winery, to support the hard-working farmers in our region. With the input of our winemaker and Tasting Room staff, we are excited to have planted more interesting varietals – Teroldego, Dolcetto, Fiano, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec.Raised among Livermore's vineyards and wineries, Rodrigue Molyneaux's winemaker Meredith Sarboraria knows what makes the wines of Livermore Valley special. Meredith's years of experience in the Livermore wine industry allow Rodrigue Molyneaux guests and club members to savor balanced, aromatic, and surprisingly unique varietals.

We're on location in California's Amador County in the Sierra Foothills. Meet Scott Harvey, one of the pioneers in this wine region. Scott has been making wine in the Amador County AVA at his namesake winery Scott Harvey Wines since the late 1970s, making a name for himself with celebrated Zinfandels and Barberas. We're excited to be with Scott at his namesake winery in the Shenandoah Valley, and we can't wait to share his story with you. We're sitting here with Scott overlooking beautiful vineyards on gently rolling hills. Now Scott is known for Barbera and Zinfandel but he will always have a specific German variety in his lineup and we'll get the inside scoop on why and the story behind the label of his vineyard 1869 Zinfandel. Yes, you heard it right, 1869.Scott takes us on a journey from his German winemaking roots and family heritage to his hands-on, terroir-driven approach in the Shenandoah Valley AVA. Plus, we'll learn the role his wife Janaplays - she even has her own label - and why Amador County is one of California's best-kept wine secrets.

You'll feel you've stepped back in time at Boeger Winery with $15 tasting fees and great wines for far less than in other more famous California wine regions. But the quality here equals them!On today's podcast we are on location at Boeger Winery in El Dorado County, where the original owners of this estate first arrived in California's Sierra Foothills to strike it rich in gold. What they discovered instead was that there was a more fruitful fortune to be made in fruits and nuts. That same soil is now planted with grapevines and home to Boeger Winery. We're delighted to be speaking with fourth generation winemaker Justin Boeger about his family's pioneering role in establishing El Dorado's first post-prohibition winery, in 1972, and launching the region's modern wine renaissance. We even got to meet Justin's father Greg, a living legend in the El Dorado County wine world.Visiting Boeger is like stepping back in time. You're surrounded by rolling hills dotted by vines and you'll still find the original 1872 gravity-fed winery, along with the modern winery and tasting room tucked in among the trees. The family celebrates its story and the history of El Dorado wine country, where liquid gold flows from the vineyard to the glass. We'll learn why El Dorado County is a hidden gem for wine lovers. High altitude wines define El Dorado, where acidity and intensity - and Sierra Spice - are the hallmarks of the region's wines. Along with that, visitors discover great mountain views and a variety of activities, from wine tasting, to mountain biking, river rafting, camping and more. We'll also find why Barbera and Zinfandel thrive here, Justin's family's German roots and a new white wine variety just being released that we think is awesome.
