On this impromptu Easter Day installment of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega reflects on our collective discombobulation (and mass disinhibition), building our inner Noah's Ark to survive these dark times that are getting much worse and much faster with Trump's return to power, and the symbolism and metaphorical power of the Easter holiday and the spring season.  Following through on the importance of building our inner Noah's Ark and filling it with things that bring us joy, Chauncey shares his thoughts on this year's WWE WrestleMania 41 event, and what should have been an epic bout between John Cena and Cody Rhodes with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson playing his part as "The Final Boss". Chauncey also shares what it was like to interview Peter Weller aka the star of Robocop at the C2E2 convention in Chicago last weekend. The titan Nikki Giovanni transitioned to the next stage of existence on December 9, 2024. This week's episode features Chauncey DeVega's conversation with Giovanni, which was shared here four years earlier, on December 8, 2020. *** Nikki Giovanni is one of America's greatest living poets. She has written dozens of collections of poetry as well as non-fiction and other work. Giovanni has received many awards and other honors including a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and three NAACP Image awards for literature. She was also a central voice in the Black Arts Movement. Giovanni is currently University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech. Nikki Giovanni's new book is Make Me Rain: Poems & Prose. Giovanni reflects on truth-telling and writing as vocation, the color line, Black woman are uniquely suited for space travel, and why Black people keep struggling to save American society from its own racism and other iniquities. And Giovanni warns that America is ultimately doomed if it continues along is current trajectory.   WHERE CAN YOU FIND ME? The VHS Strikes Back
Naked Lunch (1991) Review

The VHS Strikes Back

Sometimes, you can see a stickup coming a mile off. Other times, they come in the dressing of a movie with lots of awards and credibility. But Maff might've just played a blinder here in The Year of the Stichup. Naked Lunch (1991) was a challenging and experimental adaptation of William S. Burroughs' novel, helmed by Canadian director David Cronenberg. The film's production was marked by its complex narrative and the integration of surreal, often disturbing imagery, which reflected Burroughs' unorthodox storytelling style. Cronenberg, known for his work in body horror, worked closely with the cast, including Peter Weller, who portrayed the lead role of William Lee, to create a psychological and disorienting atmosphere. Filming took place in various locations, including Toronto, where the filmmakers utilized practical effects and innovative set designs to create the film's nightmarish world. The production team also employed a mixture of animation and special effects to bring Burroughs' hallucinatory visions to life, making Naked Lunch a visually striking, albeit polarizing, adaptation of the cult novel. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where reality is blurred and paranoia runs deep, Naked Lunch follows William Lee, a writer who becomes entangled in a web of drugs, conspiracy, and bizarre creatures. As he tries to escape his hallucinatory nightmare, Lee finds himself in the midst of a deadly game involving corrupt agents, mysterious organizations, and a sinister plot to control the world. With his mind unraveling, Lee must navigate a twisted labyrinth of absurdity and horror, where nothing is what it seems, and the lines between fantasy and reality are dangerously thin. Prepare for a journey into madness that will leave you questioning what's real and what's not.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Burroughs' Naked Lunch starring Peter Weller and Judy Davis, filmed in Toronto standing in for 50s New York and Morocco, recreated by Cronenberg's longtime production designer Carol Spier in a former General Electric plant in Toronto's west end.We discuss Cronenberg's lifelong connection to Canadian cinema and the city of Toronto with digressions on Videodrome, The Dead Zone and The Fly before grappling with Naked Lunch, which is less of a literal film version of the novel and more a meditation about the life of Burroughs and what it is to be an artist in general. We also discuss Cronenberg's cinematic explorations of paranoia and conspiracy theories, and his relationship to the queer artistic community in Canada reflected across his career, even if he's always identified himself as a heterosexual man.And we (briefly) contrast Naked Lunch with the new Burroughs cinematic adaptation, Luca Guadagnino's Queer starring Daniel Craig, which we feel misses the boat on how to adapt Burroughs for the screen.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Enjoying the second installment in Kemper Donovan's ghostwriter mystery series "Loose Lips"! Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 99th episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings. This set covers discs 1726 to 1750 in my Classic Collection. For my Fuzzy Feature I pulled up the third, fourth and fifth season finale episodes of "Psych," featuring Ally Sheedy as Mr. Yang. Under Cross Connections I trace appearances by Martin Short, Garret Dillahunt, John Mahoney, Devon Gummersall and Golden Thread Jeri Ryan. In my Book Report (around the 20-minute mark if you're looking for it specifically), I review the second installment in auther and fellow podcaster Kemper Donovan's ghostwriter mystery series, "Loose Lips." Authors, egos and personalities clash when a literary symposium set aboard a cruise ship turns deadly. Love it! Copies available here: https://bit.ly/3C11ENN In my Classic Collection, I go into a little more detail about the "Psych" episode Jeri Ryan appeared in, the pilot episode of "Grey's Anatomy," and then I talk about the pilot episodes of "Sons of Tucson" and "American Dad," which showed up in this set.   Finally, in What I've Been Watching, I finally get up to speed with the back catalogs of "Bridgerton" and "Stranger Things." Both are phenomenal shows and I'm very glad people recommended them to me. Very enjoyable use of my downtime watching them; looking forward to the next seasons. TOP TWELVE: Here's a "Top Twelve" episode guide for people looking for a quick read-in on this blog and podcast effort: https://videofuzzy.libsyn.com/about. Enjoy!

It's finally time! Bob and Al have been looking forward to this show since the start of Let's Go to the Ring, and finally, at long last, it's time to take a look at Capital Combat: Return of Robocop. Yes, unbelievably enough, WCW actually did a tie-in pay-per-view for the film Robocop II, but rather than do something sane like get Peter Weller to show up as Peter Weller and guest referee a match or do some commentary or something, it instead turned out that the Man Called Robocop was really real and was best pals with the Man Called Sting. At least, he is until the midpoint of the show, after which everyone starts pretending that angle never happened and Robocop turns into El Gigante. Some other stuff probably happens too, like a whole load of really good tag matches and a title match between some guys named Lex Luger and Ric Flair, but let's face it, you're here for Robocop. To serve the public trust, protect the innocent, and uphold the law...let's go to the ring!Music by Michael Gary Brewer at https://www.instantmusicnow.com/Follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/LetsGo2theRing/

RoboCop (1987) is directed by Paul Verhoeven and stars Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Dan O'Herlihy, Ronny Cox, and Kurtwood Smith. Music: “Fractals” by Kyle Casey and White Bat Audio

Documenteers: The Documentary Podcast

How can you not sit down with a couple of 80's heavy hitters for our month's dystopian theme “SOME BULLSHIT TOMORROW”? Especially the one we're discussing in this episode. This privatized authoritarian world of technocratic mediocrity might hit closer to home than any future film we're discussing all month. The near future setting of Old Detroit is extremely violent and absurd. There are no deep solutions. Only increased repression by corporate funded police. Barely anything works so if you don't die by getting shot 30 times then you'll probably go out in a much dumber way when your technology shits the bed. Paul Verhoeven sets up his reputation nicely with his ultra-violent, ultra-satirical 1987 sci-fi film “ROBOCOP” starring Peter Weller, Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith and more. Officer Murphy meets his end and is reborn into a 24 hour policing cyborg. His natural training is essential but his memories of his old life are harder to deprogram. Robocop became an eighties cultural icon who once save the Pro Wrestler Sting from a cage after the four horseman tased him and locked him up. Unlike his mechanical contemporaries, Robocop stood the test of time. Robocop is really the only functional thing in this movie.
