In episode 82, I'm giving a review of the latest book from The Hollows series by Kim Harrison, “Demon's Bluff,” an urban fantasy novel set in an alternate world where magic and modern sensibilities coexist. As always, I was so excited to talk about this book and this series, since I've been such a big fan of Rachel Morgan and her adventures as a witch in Cincinnati for so long. Join me as discussing Harrison's grasp on each of her characters, falling back into reading about [SPOILER], and the care that Rachel uses in proving (once again) that she is That Witch. As with all of my book reviews, there are spoilers! If you have an author, book, or topic you want to hear about on the podcast, then don't hesitate to slide into my DMs on Instagram or shoot me an email!Where else to find me:IG: @inbedwithbookspodYT: https://www.youtube.com/@InBedWithBooksPodEM: inbedwithbookspodcast@gmail.com
This December episode of the Fully-Booked podcast is one of those free-for-all episodes where we cover anything we like, without a specific theme. This week's discussion is about upcoming 2025 book adaptations we are excited for. This episode was notably pre-recorded, as Sireen was scheduled to be on maternity leave by the time of its airing. Current Reading Discussion: Contemporary Literature Analysis The hosts begin by sharing their recent reading experiences. Sireen discusses Ali Hazelwood's "2 Can Play," offering a critical analysis of its workplace romance narrative structure and problematic relationship dynamics. Meaghan shares her experience with two recent reads: "The Glimmer in the Hollows" from Round Fire Books, which she describes as a genre-bending mystery that evolves into science fiction, and "We Used to Live Here" by Marcus Kleewer, a thriller that originated from Reddit's NoSleep community. Adaptation Discourse and Fan Culture Analysis A significant portion of the discussion centers on the complex relationship between book adaptations and fan reception. The hosts explore how fan expectations and reactions can impact production decisions, citing specific examples: The shelving of "A Court of Thorns and Roses" adaptation by Hulu The successful casting decisions in "Shadow and Bone" The controversy surrounding various casting choices, including Idris Elba in "The Dark Tower" The debate over Hermione's casting in theatrical production We then move into a detailed examination of upcoming adaptations scheduled or anticipated for 2025: Horror and Thriller Adaptations "Welcome to Derry" (HBO) - A prequel series to "It" featuring Bill Skarsgård "The Housemaid" by Freda McFadden, starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" for Netflix, featuring a stellar cast including Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth Young Adult and Mystery Adaptations "We Were Liars" coming to Amazon Prime "The Good Girl's Guide to Murder" Season 2 "The Inheritance Games" adaptation (in development) Contemporary Literature Adaptations Emily Henry's "People We Meet on Vacation" - the first screen adaptation of her work "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" by Taylor Jenkins Reid "Verity" by Colleen Hoover, starring Anne Hathaway Production Analysis and Industry Insights The hosts provide valuable insights into the adaptation process and industry trends throughout their discussion. The industry's approach to casting has evolved significantly, particularly in how productions handle fan expectations versus creative decisions. We see this exemplified in multiple upcoming projects: Anne Hathaway's casting in "Verity" represents a strategic choice to bring established star power to complex source material The casting of Tom Blyth and Emily Borden in "People We Meet on Vacation" shows a careful balance between emerging talent and proven performers The ensemble approach for del Toro's "Frankenstein" demonstrates how productions are leveraging diverse talent pools to create compelling ensemble casts We're witnessing a remarkable trend in how different types of adaptations are being scaled: Premium television series like "Welcome to Derry" are receiving feature-film level budgets and production values Smaller, character-driven stories like "The Housemaid" are being positioned as mid-budget prestigious productions Streaming platforms are investing heavily in multi-season potential, as evidenced by "The Good Girl's Guide to Murder" renewal strategy The industry is embracing innovative production techniques to translate complex literary narratives: Advanced visual effects integration for fantasy and horror adaptations Sophisticated narrative structuring for non-linear storytelling (particularly relevant for "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo") Enhanced production design capabilities that allow for more faithful recreation of literary worlds We're seeing carefully orchestrated release strategies that consider: Strategic timing of releases to avoid oversaturation in specific genres Coordinated marketing campaigns that engage both book fans and new audiences Platform-specific release models (binge vs. weekly episodes) tailored to content type Key trends emerging in the adaptation landscape: Increased focus on diverse source material and representation Growing emphasis on author involvement in adaptation processes Rising importance of social media engagement and fan community management Strategic franchise development potential for successful adaptations Closing Observations The episode concludes with reflections on how 2025 is shaping up to be a significant year for book-to-screen adaptations, with both hosts expressing particular interest in how these various projects will handle their source material and meet audience expectations. The discussion consistently returns to the theme of balancing faithful adaptation with creative interpretation, suggesting that the success of these upcoming projects will largely depend on how well they navigate these competing demands while maintaining the core essence of their source material. A babysitter for two children on Halloween night discovers a tape among their candy bags featuring three horror stories. Each story is linked by a murderous clown and after starting the tape, strange occurrences take place in the house. All Hollows' Eve is the first feature-length film directed by Damien Leone, best known for the Terrifier movies. What's interesting about All Hollows' Eve is that it depicts Art the Clown prior to the Terrifier movies. In this film, he's portrayed as a killer clown among a series of short horror films in a video tape discovered in a bag of Halloween candy. We enjoy horror anthology movies and found two of the three short horror films in this movie to be very entertaining. However, one of the films seemed very out-of-place. Daniel Church is a horror fiction writer and the author of THE HOLLOWS, which was shortlisted for the British Fantasy Award. His second book, THE RAVENING, is out now and his third novel, THE SOUND OF THE DARK, will be published in 2025. In THE RAVENING, two women fight to free themselves of a terrifying thousand-year-old curse. Jenna lost her mum when she was a girl—a terrifying incident on a lonely road in the woods that no one, least of all Jenna, has ever been able to explain. She's been angry, defensive, and self-reliant ever since—until she meets Holly and begins to open up just a little. But just as life is beginning to offer some promise Jenna is ripped away from Holly; kidnapped by a bizarre cult in thrall, so they say, to an ancient demon who offers the promise of eternal life in return for a particular sacrifice. A sacrifice that links Jenna, her mum, and a bloodline reaching back centuries. With its antlered demon and a shadowy otherworld behind the veil of our world, THE RAVENING combines cinematic horrors with a compelling story of one woman's refusal to give up and another woman's fight for survival against terrible odds – both of them determined to overturn very different expectations. In this interview, we talk about, his childhood fascination with dark and creepy stories, his pen name, the writer's responsibility to serve the story and characters, the importance of avoiding self-indulgence and ego, and more. We are all trying to build the life we really want, balancing what we are doing with the lifestyle we dream of. However, are we truly making a life that matches our deepest values? How can we be sure our path fits our real goals? In this episode, we have Molly Lou Hollows, founder of Strategy Sculptors. Her business focuses on both the practical stuff we need to build and understanding our true selves, so what we create aligns with the life we genuinely desire. Today, we will explore what human design strategy is for business consultant clients. Molli shares what Unified Field Theory and Morphogenetic Field is and how it actually attracts opportunities and experiences by just being themselves with purpose. Join us and align with your true self! --- Listen to the podcast here: Human Designed Strategy for Personal and Professional Fulfillment with Molli Lou Hollows Welcome to Action's Antidotes, your antidote to the mindset that keeps you settling for less. I've been doing a bunch of these podcast interviews and I've witnessed a whole bunch of different motivations, a whole bunch of different reasons why we all build our businesses and/or passion projects of any kind. Some of it's based on certain specific circumstances and others based on something that we're called to do, but at the core of everything that we're trying to do, the journey that we are all on right now, is trying to build the life that we really want. Then there's kind of a juxtaposition, a meetup of the physical thing that we're building, what we're actually doing as well as the lifestyle we're trying to achieve, whether it be escaping something we don't want or whether it be feeling really in touch with having our lives be in alignment with who we truly are. My guest today, Molli Lou, is the founder of Strategy Sculptors, and her business actually works at that intersection of physical, tangible thing we need to build as well as understanding who we are at a course that what we're building actually matches the life that we really truly want. --- Molli, welcome to the program. Hey, Stephen. Yeah. I'm excited to be here. Super awesome. Oh, that's amazing. Now, first of all, let's get a point in time out. How long have you been at it with Strategy Sculptors? Well, in 2020, that's when I really started my full-time entrepreneurial journey. I think a lot of us did. We were all home so we all were questioning things and really looking at ourselves in a different way. We were all at home and so I really started to be like, okay, I've always wanted to do this. So I dove into it and I started going to school for hypnotherapy. I already had gone through and was a certified breakthrough coach, specifically, and I just felt like I needed something more tangible to use than coaching just for me. Coaching is great but I have always felt like I was going towards a framework that I was creating on my own, that I was going to enter the framework eventually.Share on X I ended up working towards other things. I felt limited, actually, by the hypnotherapy. I wanted to use it as a tool but I wanted to be able to make it scalable so that I could make as much income as I wanted and I wanted it to be more flexible because the one on one, it gets old. I didn't want to trade my hours for dollars. I wanted that to be, for sure, part of the solution, part of my entrepreneurial journey was to find that, and I ended up working with a lot of entrepreneurs to begin with, and I realized maybe I just loved entrepreneurship and then it was kind of this delicate balance of finding a way to have both, to have both entrepreneurship and spirituality merge. And then I ended up where I am now, where, finally, I've figured it out. Coming into 2020 when you started rethinking a lot of things, what were you doing? Did you have a full-time normal job? Were you just trading your dollars for hours through this hypnotherapy coaching or was there somethi...

No stranger to hard work, Indiana author Tommy Dean toiled in the corn fields of his youth, dreaming of basketball or baseball stardom. He's drawn to the ways that writing fiction allows him to become a kind of shapeshifter, creating worlds in which he gets to live multiple lives. The characters who populate his stories may live hard lives, but their faith in humanity keeps them connected to the world in profound ways. We read "Naming the Darkness" from the collection Hollows. https://tommydeanwriter.com/Support the show
We made it to FOUR HUNDRED episodes. Whew. This week marks the 400th episode of Beer Guys Radio. Crazy. We've been pretty steady with the show since we launched in January 2016, and here it is 2024. Thanks for joining us for the ride.We open up with a little WTF action as Truly launched a Hot Wing Sauce Hard Seltzer "just in time" for the Super Bowl. Maybe it would pair well with our cellared Hormel Chili Cheese Beer?Just like everything else the average price for a case of craft beer is up, and I learned there are several categories of craft beer at retail, all the way up to Apex Craft.Bids are in for Anchor Brewing and it's expected a winner will be announced soon. The Anchor Union is still in the mix but no word on where they stand in the race.We share some thoughts on Dry January and hop water, now that it's all behind us, and thoughts on what breweries can do to keep people coming in during those challenging months. We definitely support giving your body a break, but we sure don't want to hurt our favorite bars and breweries. In related news, NA beer is the NA beverage of choice (next to NA wine and spirits) for Dry January. We take a little side venture into hot sauce chat, and about if listening to a book counts as reading a book.More closures. So many more closures. Buffalo Bayou Brewing got locked out of their building for non payment of rent. The CEO says he's trying to come back. We ponder the likelihood of that happening. You gotta have a bold strategy to pull off a Lazarus move.AB InBev continues to close down craft breweries it acquired. But it's keeping some of the brands alive at its other breweries. Let's see what they have left when it's all said and done. Finally, a shout out to our friends Jason and Leslie from Orpheus Brewing. They're having a going away party this weekend ahead of a move to Amsterdam where they'll start up a much smaller brewing operation, The Hollows. We wish them luck!Beers of the WeekScofflaw Juice Quest (Hazy IPA)Three Taverns Decatur 200 (Cold Pale Ale)Dogfish Head / Rodenbach - Crimson Cru (Red Ale, blend of Rodenbach Grand Cru and “an off-centered red ale” infused w/sumac & sweet orange peel.)Bearded Iris Pep Talk (Lager)Thanks for listening to Beer Guys Radio! Tom Morley emailed around St Patrick's Day: "Marc, Our Chattanooga - based band Stringer's Ridge played a concert on St. Patrick's Day at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. (I am there on the faculty at the famous folk arts school usually once a year teaching beginning or intermediate Irish Fiddle.) We had a wonderful crowd and it was a great way to spend the best Irish day of the year! I am enclosing several photos of us at the historic Keith House where we put on the concert. (Tom Morley - fiddle, Fran Morley - bodhran, Bryant Haynes - guitar) Thanks for all you do to promote Irish trad music!" STRINGER'S RIDGE Marilyn S. Hansen sent a photo about Easter Rising Band: "14 seminarians got together years ago in St. Louis and developed an Irish band. Most of them are married now. They play at each other's weddings, but they also have regular gigs. The interesting part is how their kids take part… This is last year‘s celebration. I was out of town this year celebrating my sister's birthday the day before St. Patrick's Day. Thought I'd send you last year's photo. I'll send you a few that they've sent to me for this year. EASTER RISING BAND Pete Watson emailed St Pat's photos: "Hi Marc, The Bookends had a fabulous time playing a number of shows throughout Ontario around St. Patrick's Day.Attached is a photo of Miriam (left) and Cait (right) on St. Paddy's Day for our gig at The Rec Room, Toronto, with our regular special guest bodhrán player extraordinaire, Romano Di Nillo.Romano is just back from 4+ years with Come From Away on Broadway and we were so glad to have him with us for these shows. The venue was handing out some "paddywhackery" to attendees and these 3 couldn't resist putting some on!" THE BOOKENDS-PETE WATSON Bruce Cummings, a Piper emailed a photo: "Hey Marc!Just to say how much I enjoy listening to the Celtic music you provide. You asked for pictures from St. Patrick's Day 2023, so here's a couple. I am part of the Lane Fire Brigade Pipes and Drums in Eugene Ore. We had a great weekend piping in the area.Keep up the good work!" BRUCE CUMMINGS PIPER Jim O'Connor of Boston Blackthorne emailed a photo: "Hi Marc -hope you had a fabulous holiday! Boston Blackthorne played 3 nights in Western MA, centered around St Patrick's Day as well as the big parade (the nation's oldest) in Holyoke MA.We played to crowded enthusiastic fans in Northampton MA and Holyoke MA.But perhaps the best gig (and story) was the one that arose spontaneously back in the lobby of our hotel after our St Pat's evening show. The hotel lobby is most frequently empty but this night is was crowded with about 100 boisterous folks from Minnesota, visiting Massachusetts to support a Women's college Hockey team. We were approached by the unofficial spokesperson who pointed at our guitar and fiddle and asked, “Can you really play those?” I answered of course we can, and this is your lucky night! Not only has your party been invaded by musicians, we are an Irish band and this is St Patrick's Day! We proceeded to unpack our instruments and did a set of singalongs like Charlie on the MTA for the Boston connection.Halfway through the set our wives came into the lobby -my wife grumbled to Pete's wife, “This party is going to keep us up all night!”Pete's wife Maureen looked a little closer and exclaimed, “Hey that's Jim and Pete in the center of it all!”They joined the fray, we had the best gig of the year playing for this group of strangers from the Midwest, wonderful folks who doubtless went home with a great tale and the definition of the work “Craic!” JIM OCONNOR
