The one and only film directed by special effects guru Alec Gillis, Harbinger Down brings some glorious practical effects work but not much else. Alec Gillis grew up in Orange County, California within sight of the Disneyland fireworks show. As a kid he roamed the mean streets of Main Street Disneyland, It was here he gained a lifelong appreciation of animatronics, but it was in the local movie theatres that he fell in love with genre films. At age 20 Gillis began working for Roger Corman on a film called BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS, along with James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. After working for various Makeup Effects luminaries such as Tom Savini and Greg Cannom, Gillis was recommended by James Cameron to Stan Winston, where Gillis worked on effects for classic films such as ALIENS and PREDATOR. In 1988 he co-founded Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. (ADI) with Tom Woodruff, Jr. TREMORS was the company's first feature, and the film's giant subterranean worms gained Gillis notoriety. The duo's work garnered Oscar nominations for STARSHIP TROOPERS, ALIEN 3 and won for DEATH BECOMES HER. Gillis has won numerous other awards such as BAFTAs and SATURNs. His work has been seen in BRIGHT, IT 1 and 2, and currently the Disney/Fox Predator feature PREY, directed by Dan Trachtenberg. During his 3 decades with ADI, Gillis has also written numerous screenplays, written 3 books and produced/directed a feature film, HARBINGER DOWN. His new solo company, Studio Gillis, will continue the tradition Gillis is known for of high-quality Creature, Make Up and Practical Effects. In this episode we discuss: Alec's unique way of ending up entering in the industry How his passion for scary movies and monsters as a child became a dream job Coming up with James Cameron and a fun full circle moment The ins and outs of how they make monsters and creatures from start to finish How technology has contributed and changed his job throughout the years He talks about his foray into directing and acting His favorite monster and experience Alec discusses how his whole family has become an industry family (despite his best efforts :)) Make sure to watch out on Tipsy Casting's instagram for a behind the scenes video look into Alec's shop and some of the amazing creatures he's created! Sporting a 4.6/10 on IMDb and a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, Harbinger Down hasn't exactly imbedded itself indelibly in the public consciousness nor has it earned status as a cult classic. Still, costing just a shade over $380,000 via crowdfunding and created by Amalgamated Dynamics -- the guy's fucked over by the studio on 2011's The Thing -- is an admirable accomplishment, a film brought to life by effects artists who wanted to show the world what they could do. It shamefully wears its influences of The Thing and Alien on its sleeve, but if that's what brought Lance Henriksen to the project, we're here for it. p.s. The Give Me Five Podcast: An Uncultured Look at Pop Culture and Nostalgia
I guess blindly trusting a Buzz Feed article isn't always the best plan. But While looking for a new horror movie to watch on Halloween, I found this article: 10 Underrated Horror Movies . The movie listed several movies that were new to us, so we chose Harbinger Down. A fairly innocuous body horror film that takes place on a crab boat in the arctic. The movie has several similarities with The Thing, and Alien, which is no surprise considering the origin. But is it worthy of checking out for reasons other than its decent practical effects and the always amazing Lance Herricksen. Stay tuned for our question of the week based on the movie, what are the top 5 body horror sequences in film? The Give Me Five Podcast is on Patreon. Superdeep is finally out on Shudder and you should watch it! This week we chat about Superdeep and what we like and dislike about modern Sci-Fi Horror. and The Conjuring 3, The Devil Made Me Do It.
This week, it's a first here on Precinct 13: a look at one of John Carpenter's forays into writing for the comics world. The Joker: Year of the Villain #1 is a one-shot entry into the DC Comics canon that Carpenter co-wrote with Borderlands writer Anthony Burch in 2019; it was released right around the same time that movie audiences were turning out en masse to see Joaquin Phoenix's interpretation of the infamous Batman villain. Our discussion of this unique Carpenter work also gets into the larger world of Carpenter comics, the very un-Joker-like portrayals of villainy in his films, and even a member of Batman's "Rogues Gallery" that you may(o) have never heard of! All that, plus a few more of our musings on non-Carpenter horror, from a solid recent sequel to a long-running, low-key franchise to a movie that shows us what The Thing prequel probably should have looked like.

"Alien" (1979) and its sequel "Aliens" (1986) have influenced countless films in their wake. They both have possibly created, and definitely have made previously existing tropes popular, cementing them into pop culture to the extent that one can easily recognise an "'Alien' formula" in many different films, regardless of setting. In this episode Lee explores the soundtracks and scores of films that clearly display this formula. Considering the vast amount of films out there to choose from, there will at least be a part 2. --Main Title from "It!

This week shark-fanatic Kate Hearn picks the theme of sea monsters, starting with the biggest, baddest great white shark around - Bruce himself - in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) SPOILERS INCLUDED. We look at the characterisations, the performances, the context, the legacy and the trivia. Then, from the same director as Titanic and Avatar (according to the DVD) we have Piranha II: The Spawning (1981) which we all struggle to be nice about but do extract a few choice moments. Finally, George P. Cosmatos turns a lot of De Laurentis money into a mashup of other people’s movies in Leviathan (1989) with a great cast, crew, special effects, composer, writers - none of whom seem to have brought anything original. Also: The Meg (2018). Lips and assholes. Martha’s Vineyard? Martha! We compare scars. Joe goes off on Pan & Scan *again*. We discover the hill that Dee will die on: “This is what happens…”. Boop the snoot. “As the money goes up, the art goes down.” Do police boats have sirens? Getting jiggy in a dinghy. Sexism at the bottom of the ocean. Shooting dry for wet. WTF sharks?! Harbinger Down (2015). We play a game of “Wait, seriously?”

Be sure to check out nowscreaming.com, and tell us what you think on Twitter @nowscreamingpod. Don’t forget to rate, review, and subscribe on iTunes... or else we'll keep doing Trump impressions every week.
Science gets weird this week on Dread Media. First off, an expedition for a group of scientists heading to the Arctic Circle goes horribly wrong (does it ever go right?) in Harbinger Down. Rich the Monster Movie Kid continues his tribute to horror legends with birthdays in May with a look at two Vincent Price films: Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine and Dr. Goldfoot and the Girl Bombs. Devil Dinosaur Jr. delivers a brand new Stay Scary on the early talkie, Doctor X. Then Desmond and Duane look at a totally underrated classic 80s film: Dead and Buried. There are tunes, of course: "Winds from the North" by Frozen Dawn, "Cosmonaut" by At the Drive-In, "Goldfinger" by Leningrad Cowboys, "Doctor #8" by Tobin Sprout, "Bodies" by Danzig, and "Weird Science" by Oingo Boingo. Originally broadcast the week of 8/23/15, whether it was working with James Cameron on Aliens and The Terminator or creating the monsters for Tremors, Alec Gillis and his partner Tom Woodruff, Jr. have contributed to the nightmares of an entire generation of moviegoers. After a very successful Kickstarter campaign, Alec has written and directed Harbinger Down, a throwback to the kind of practical effects flicks he grew up on and helped to create himself during the 80's and 90's. Alec joins us to talk about his early days working for Roger Corman and meeting James Cameron, which of his iconic creatures still holds up decades later, and whether practical effects are still a viable way of creating chills and thrills for an audience. He even shares some secrets of how they achieved a big budget look on a shoestring budget! More information about Alec's latest film can be found at www.harbingerdown.com From the dangerous minds behind the 30 Minutes of Geek podcast, it's even more great guests, nerdy conversations, and geek humor...now on the radio!!! Because the weekend demands more than 30 Minutes of Geek, it's GEEK UNIVERSE with Jim Yelton! Nationally Syndicated on the GLN Radio Network and streaming on-demand through www.geekuniverseshow.com

By far, this is the wackiest, uber-geekiest Damn Dirty Geeks podcast episode ever, thanks in part to our special guest Sultan Saeed Al Darmaki, whose own geek cred is extensive as you'll find out when he joins in singing "deep cuts" from Saturday morning cartoon theme songs with the DDG team! Not only do we revisit classic TV animation including JOHNNY QUEST with other Hanna Barbera and Japanese anime series, this episode also expands into geek discussions of PLANET OF THE APES, comedic comparisons of THE ODD COUPLE in its various forms, and the 1966 BATMAN series starring Adam West. Sultan, founder of Dark Dunes Productions, served as executive producer of the upcoming horror film HARBINGER DOWN directed by StudioADI's Alec Gillis, director of the upcoming horror comedy KIDS VS. MONSTERS, and produced the upcoming fantasy feature film YAMASONG; MARCH OF THE HOLLOWS featuring the voices of Abigail Breslin, Nathan Fillion, Malcolm McDowell, Peter Weller and George Takei. Now, thanks to his appearance on DDG, Sultan can add to his credits a wonderful duet with our Frank Woodward singing "Suddenly" from XANADU which has to be heard to be believed. Though we're releasing this "Episode 005" out of chronological order in recording dates, this show marked the DDG podcast debut of our own Trish Geiger who dove right into the geek deep end with the rest of us. This delay is partly due to the massive amount of audio mixing it took to present this very cast-crowded episode, but the results are worth the wait! So activate your supergeek powers and join this wild ride through Saturday morning cartoons and pop culture entertainment, won't you? Please Like and Share this new episode with your geek friends on Facebook and Twitter to help spread the word! We thank you.

For a while it seemed like episode 19 would go down as "The Lost Episode." We first recorded it the day after a double header Drunken Cinema (HUGE mistake) and, despite the massive hangovers, it turned out pretty well. However, through no fault of our own, the audio was corrupted and irreparable. We recorded again on Wednesday and somehow, the file was again corrupted. This time, however, Tony was able to repair the file, 6 seconds at a time, and the episode was saved. So here we go. We jump into the latest Horror Business, including real-world news concerning the discovery of a tomb believed to belong to Vlad Dracul, the "real" Dracula. In the world of fiction, we catch you up on the Americanized version of the French drama The Returned, plus updates on the future of The Walking Dead. Moving from the small screen to the big screen, we talk about Pacific Rim 2, Leprechaun: Origins, Harbinger Down, Insidious: Chapter 3, Ghostbusters 3, This Isn't A Movie (yes, it is), Paranormal Activity 5, Friday the 13th, and a film adaptation of the popular video game Dead Rising. Speaking of video games, we tell you about the upcoming sequel to Dead Island, appropriately titled Dead Island 2. We also tell you about some cool new horror figures coming from NECA and tell you how you can see Freddy Krueger in the burnt flesh one last time. We also got a chance to chat with Hank and Wayne Thompson (no relation) of Eze As Pi Productions about their new project, a zombie movie through the eyes of children, called Too Young To Die. Think Lord of the Flies meets Land of the Dead. It sounds like it could be a fresh take on the zombie genre, which would be refreshing. Check it out at www.wearetooyoungtodie.com. We also have two new movie reviews. The first is the latest from writer/director Ti West, The Sacrament. This movie is about a cult and, surprisingly, things go awry. The other is John Carpenter's 1998 vampire film, Vampires. Get it? James Woods plays a vampire hunter who must take down the master vampire before he turns into an invincible vampire who vampires vampire vampire. Wait... what? This episode took a lot of work to make. Enjoy the show.
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. As we did for last year, this year Dark Discussions is discussing some of the top genre films that your co-hosts are looking forward to seeing in 2014. Horror, sci-fi, fantasy, thriller, techno-thriller, mystery. You name it, it's coming. Last year looked like it was going to be one hell of a year but by some it turned out otherwise. Yet this year, once again, filmmakers everywhere are whetting the chops of genre fans throughout the world. For those so inclined, here is the short list of what we discuss in the episode. Kevin Smith's Tusk, Eli Roth's Green Inferno, Oliver Blackburn's Random, Ti West's Sacrament, Simon Rumley's The Last Word, and the Joe R. Lansdale penned and Jim Mickle directed Cold in July. Other horror films include Willow Creek, Devil's Due, The Jungle, Hellions, Occulus, All Cheerleaders Die, Scorned, Nothing Bad Can Happen, The Loft, Faults, and Afflicted. Some bigger films spoken of include Joe Hill's Horns, Guardians of the Galaxy, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, Deliver Us From Evil, and the Scarlett Johansson's film, Under the Skin. Many remakes or sequels discussed include The Town that Dreaded Sundown, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Poltergeist, The Purge 2, Rec 4: Apocalypse, Wolf Creek 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Robocop, Dead Snow: Red Vs. Dead, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. But we discuss a few more films including co-host Mike and Eric's opinion on the new Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones which was just released. Plus other films that may be low profile that seem interesting are Joon-ho Bong's Snowpiercer, Sinbad the 5th Voyage, I Frankenstein, the Lance Henricksen film Harbinger Down, Pompeii, Edge of Tomorrow, Big Bad Wolves, Nights of Badassdum, the thriller simply titled +1, and the dark thriller Nurse 3-D (among others). So come and listen to what your hosts think of the new year and whether it will live up to the hype.
