Casey picks Jan de Bont's The Haunting for the second movie in our Dead of Summer triple feature. In this episode, we meet Hugh Crain, along with Hill House itself. We trace the film's tangled path from a planned Spielberg/Stephen King collaboration (that eventually became King's Rose Red) through Jan de Bont taking the reins, and break down all 16 monster reveals hiding in Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Owen Wilson, and Lili Taylor's ill-fated sleep study. We compare this haunted house movie to both the 1963 original and Mike Flanagan's Netflix series, geek out over the ILM and Tippett Studios effects work, run our Real Monsters segment, and find out once and for all whether any of us would survive a night in Hill House. "Automated Paradise" The Bristol-born Jon Klein got his start with the late-seventies post-punk outfit Europeans. After their break-up he formed the porto-goth band Specimen, who put out a handful of winning singles, but splintered before an album could be released. In 1987 Klein joined Siouxsie and the Banshees and went on to record three records with them: Peepshow, Superstition and The Rapture. Although Klein left the band in 1994, from there he moved from strength to strength, playing and recording with Shriekbak, Thomas Dolby, Talvin Singh and Space Tribe. He toured with Sinead O'Connor as her lead guitarist in 1995 and he played everywhere from Pinkpop to Glastonbury to Lollapalooza. Klein is one of those guys who has always stayed busy: he played in the band SNAIL, toured Southeast Asia as the musical director for Dr. Penguin's Magic Circus, went to art school and knocked out a degree in Fine Art and Critical Theory, has his own production company called Ground Control, co- produced an album for Fangoria, which hit Number One in Spain, composed soundtracks for film and theatre companies and played in the supergroup, Spammed with Horace Panter, Rat Scabies and Terry Edwards. He's also a filmmaker, an international fine artist and he is a member of the Tuned In Community Music Project with Jah Wobble. Klein and Jah Wobble have put out several fabulous albums, including A Brief History of Now and their latest effort, Automated Paradise. A jittery blast of searing post-punk and cultural dread, Automated Paradise finds Klein in fine form, slashing brilliantly away through each composition with fiery resolve. www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) IG + BLUESKY + THREADS: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

It is directed by Will Gluck (who also directed Anyone but You and Easy A and other things). It has grossed $7.4 million over its first six days in theaters, and it’s in danger of becoming a box office bomb. And: “Two People Exchanging Saliva (Deux personnes échangeant de la salive)” is a black-and-white French-language absurdist comedy-drama short film written and directed by Alexandre Singh and Natalia Mistreata.  by Patrick BromleyChicago's biggest and best horror convention returns! One of my favorite weekends of the year is Chicago's annual Flashback Weekend, the horror convention created and run by Mike and Mia Kerz that takes place in Rosemont, Illinois. It's three days of panels, parties, contests, vendors, celebrity guests, live music -- everything you could want as a horror fan. This will be my sixth year hosting panels at the convention, but I've been going to Flashback much longer than just these six years. I love it.This year's Flashback features a salute to 30 years of the Scream franchise, celebrates Halloween II, a Night of the Creeps reunion, features first-time Flashback appearances from Henry Thomas, Steven Weber, and the Silent Night, Deadly Night Santas, and even has Obsession co-star Megan Lawless making her convention debut (I get to host her panel on Sunday! Come on out!). Plus, this year sees the world premiere of a brand new Full Moon movie (relevant to my interests!), in-costume photo opps, Alan Howarth playing the score to Halloween II LIVE along with the film, a tribute to Svengoolie (the greatest horror host of all time), and so much more. One of my favorite things about Flashback -- besides all the cool guests and the chance to spend the weekend surrounded by horror stuff and horror fans -- is that it's a family-run convention and really feels that way. All of the proceeds from the con go into supporting the Midway Drive-In located in Dixon, IL -- the nicest and best drive-in in Illinois -- which they bought in 2007. I love that Flashback is dedicated to preserving the big-screen theatrical experience. From this year's press release:Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror ConventionJuly 31 - Aug. 2, 2026Hyatt Regency O'Hare Chicago, Rosemont, IL  60018 Tickets now on sale at www.flashbackweekend.comFlashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention celebrates its 25th year with a MASSIVE Celebrity guest line-up, amazing evening events, luxurious after-parties, an enormous vendor room, and special Celebrity costume Celeb Photo-Ops.All of this and more, taking place in one of the largest and most beautiful Convention hotels in the World!FLASHBACK WEEKEND 2026 SALUTES;-30 years of SCREAM! Horror Icons! Tribute to the 1980's Golden Age of Horror!"OBSESSION" (2026)!!! Welcome to the fifteenth episode of our ongoing series: Fascism On Film. Each episode of this series, the Holmes Brothers look and review a film that has to do with fascism. During the episodes, the brothers look and see how the aspects and portrayal of fascism shown in the film relate to current and/or past events. On this Fascism on Film episode, the Holmes Brothers along with friend of the podcast Richard Bruno sit down to discuss Orson Welles's The Stranger. Released in 1946, it stars Orson Welles, Edward G. Robinson and Loretta Young. The Stranger is a film noir thriller set in a small town in Connecticut. This was Welles's third film as a director and his first film noir picture. After the making of The Magnificent Ambersons, Orson Welles took on the job of directing this film to show he could make a film under budget and under schedule. And more importantly, a successful film. His last two films, Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons, were not successful at the box office. The Stranger stars Robinson as Agent Wilson, a war crimes investigator for the United Nations, is on the hunt for a Nazi war criminal hiding in plain sight under a new identity. The man he is after is Franz Kindler who goes by the name Charles Rankin and is a professor at the local college. Rankin/Kindler is also about to get married to Mary Longstreet, daughter of Supreme Court Justice Adam Longstreet. They are played by Loretta Young and Philip Merivale. With nothing to go on except Kindler's passion for clocks, Wilson releases Konrad Meinike (Konstantin Shayne) at the hopes he will lead him to Rankin. We hope you enjoy this episode and stay tuned for more episodes of this Fascism On Film series.Be sure to check out our Monument Valley Film on our YouTube Channel.Anders's screenwriter work can also be seen at work in the horror, car chase thriller Delivery Run, co-written with & directed by Joey Palmroos. The film has been released digitally and also in select cinemas in the US and the UK. In Finland it was released on Apple TV after finishing its limited cinema run and was the Number 1 film for multiple weeks. You can read a review about it here on the Fangoria website. The film is now available to watch in the other Nordic territories like Sweden, Oslo and of course Denmark. As we were preparing for this show, we started to realize that there maybe just isn’t that much good pop culture stuff about the American Revolution. There’s Hamilton, of course. The John Adams HBO miniseries. Maybe the musical and movie 1776? And that’s maybe it? There’s fun junk like The Patriot or National Treasure. But what else? Think about all the great movies and TV series and plays and whatever else there are about World War II. Or Vietnam. Or the American Civil War. I mean, there’s a newish movie (based on a play) about THE WEATHER leading up to D-Day … and it’s pretty good! So what is it about the story of the American Revolution that makes it especially hard to tell well on the stage or screen? The Nose has thoughts. What if your favorite non-horror movies were actually secret sequels to the scariest films ever made? This week, Mike, Kat, Andrew, and Matt test that theory as they delve into fan fiction for the first time, connecting a classic horror movie to another film sharing the same actor. For instance: imagine Jack Torrance didn't actually freeze to death in the hedge maze; instead, the Overlook preserved him but shattered his mind. He escaped, took the name "Melvin Udall," and moved to a cramped NYC apartment to write romance novels. And there you have it—As Good As It Gets is officially the sequel to The Shining. You get the idea... or maybe you don't, but it was a wild discussion regardless. You'll want to hear this one.Plus, Mike & Andrew discuss BACKROOMS (spoiler-free), the horror-comedy sensation WIDOW'S BAY and the CAPE FEAR remake series.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/america-s-hometown-horror--4187035/support.Support the Show:FANGORIA: We are a proud affiliate of Fangoria! Phil and Emily are joined by critic and editor Isaac Feldberg to continue their Richard Kelly Reichardt mini-series with Kelly Reichardt's quiet breakthrough, Old Joy (2006). Isaac edits at Letterboxd Journal and writes for RogerEbert.com and Fangoria, and as a former Eagle Scout, he might be the perfect guide to a movie about two guys going camping.Made for roughly $30,000 and shot in the forests east of Portland, Old Joy follows old friends Kurt (Will Oldham) and Mark (Daniel London) on a weekend trip to a hot spring deep in the Cascades. Almost nothing happens, and somehow everything does. It became Reichardt's calling card, earned rapturous reviews including four stars from Roger Ebert, and announced one of American cinema's most quietly essential filmmakers. The gang gets into why Reichardt remains a beloved secret, the kind of filmmaker fans swear will one day get a Criterion box and a wave of "how did we not know about this?" They dig into the ache underneath the film's radical simplicity, the suspense of a friendship that can't quite say what it means, the tender and unspoken queerness running through it, and why these two men sound less like a Richard Linklater hangout and more like real life. Plus Lucy the dog, "the John Cazale of canine performers," the perfect Old Joy double feature, and the image of a slug on a mossy boulder that Ebert never forgot. Why do we remember the small moments more than the big ones? Old Joy has a few answers. Come sit with it.Follow the show & guests:Podcast Like It's... — https://www.instagram.com/podcastlikeitsPhil Iscove — https://www.instagram.com/pmiscoveEmily St. James — https://www.instagram.com/emilystjamsIsaac Feldberg —https://www.instagram.com/ijfeldberg
