Whether you're here for the satire, the explosions, or just the “America… F Yeah!” anthem, this episode has it all. A musical with sweary puppets might be one of the biggest movie miracles of all time.Team America: World Police started out as an homage to Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds mixed with Jerry Bruckheimer all-action, post 9/11 US foreign policy and a hint of disaster movies. It's likely that South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone simply had no idea what they were in for when they agreed to make this movie and release it in October 2004.They had five months(!)Five months to make a fully practical movie starring marionettes, with scale sets and explosions and montages and sex! With zero CGI. Did they do it? Bleep yeah. This episode explains how, and why we should be retrospectively praising this movie for more than its satire. This episode was originally released on 16th June 2022Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Just bear in mind, this episode is several years old, it may not sound quite as polished as newer episodes, and new information may have come to light in recent years with regards to the making of this movie (please see above for the original date of release) Please enjoy this time capsule of an episode. A follow-up to last week's Hockey Update. Not all the news is good. This week's movie is based on a true story, a first for this podcast. As such, Steve dives into the real history of Alfred (Alferd) Packer.Cannibal! The Musical: A musical bit of fan fic surrounding the real life "adventures" of Alfred Packer, a 19th Century American who served in the Civil War, became a wilderness guide and gold miner, then ate a bunch of guys. That escalated quickly, huh? The movie might just be a vehicle to mock a woman Trey Parker was in a relationship with at one time, as her namesake in the movie is Packer's fictional horse, Lianne, aka The Horse Who Would Let Anybody Ride Her. He may have made this entire movie just to talk about her.Yor, The Movie with the Wordy Title final grade: Steve: It was entertaining. If you're a fan of South Park or Team America: World Police, you'll like this as a kind of origin story for Trey and Matt. Their restaurant doesn't have very good food, FYI. The local twist of this movie makes it interesting to us. 2.75/5.0Brandon: This one was a little shpadoinkle, but not all the way shpadoinkle. You could see bits and pieces of things that would later become the kind of humor that would make these guys boatloads of cash with South Park and other stuff. 2.5/5.0Cocktail of the Week:The Cannibal Reviver1 oz Gin1/2 oz Lemon Juice1/2 oz Yellow Chartreuse or Genepy de Chamois1/2 oz Dolin Sweet White VermouthPeychaud BittersCombine everything in a cocktail shaker. Shake to combine and chill, then strain into a rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a lemon wedge/wheel. Cocktail Grade: Maybe it's the fact that we're not popping the $80 for a bottle of Chartreuse, and the Genepy stuff messes it up, but this one was just OK. A bit of an anise flavor that will turn off black licorice haters. Better than ChatGPT creations, at least. 2.0/5.0------------------Contact us with feedback or cocktail/movie recommendations to:boozeandbmovies@gmail.comX: @boozeandbmoviesInstagram: @boozeandbmoviesThreads: @boozeandbmovieswww.facebook.com/boozeandbmovies

Join Greg Alba, Aaron Alexander, and John Humphrey as they dive into the 2004 cult classic that redefined political satire—Team America: World Police. Directed by Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park, Cannibal! Team America follows an elite, over-the-top task force of marionette operatives as they confront the world's most dangerous threats. The film features unforgettable moments like the explosive “America, F**k Yeah!” the country elegy "Freedom Isn't Free," the "Montage" song, & Kim Jong Il's showstopping "I'm So Ronery" along with the host of outrageous action sequences that blend crude comedy with sharp social commentary. The film also parodies famous actors and iconic Hollywood personas—taking playful jabs at stars such as Alec Baldwin, Michael Moore, Matt Damon, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, George Clooney, Danny Glover, Ethan Hawke, Helen Hunt, Samuel L Jackson, Liv Tyler, Martin Sheen, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck, Julianne Moore, and others—adding an extra layer of hilarity and cultural critique. Chris delivers a fiery analysis of Trump's radical foreign policy proposals that upend 20th-century norms. He discusses how America's traditional role as the global policeman is under threat, urging Europe to build its own defense while rethinking strategic assets like the Panama Canal and Greenland. Markowski challenges the outdated Wilsonian ideals and calls on European nations to stop relying on U.S. leadership. www.watchdogonwallstreet.com

“Well I'll be greased and fried! What's the circus doing up in these parts?”The Chiodo Brothers and Their Creature Feature LegacyBefore Killer Klowns from Outer Space, the Chiodo Brothers – Charles, Edward, and Stephen – had already made a name for themselves in the special effects world of the 1980s. With credits on films like Critters and sequences in RoboCop, they were well-versed in creating practical effects and creature designs. Killer Klowns from Outer Space represented an opportunity for them to showcase their skills in a feature-length film, with Stephen Chiodo taking on the role of director. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue the One-and-Done series with a conversation about their 1988 film Killer Klowns from Outer Space.Clowning Around with Horror Tropes and Twisted ExpectationsIn our discussion, we marvel at how Killer Klowns from Outer Space gleefully subverts classic clown tropes, turning seemingly innocent gags into sinister and often grotesque moments. From the balloon animal hunting dog to the shadow puppet T-Rex that devours its victims, the film consistently surprises and delights with its inventive use of clown iconography. However, we question whether the horror-comedy balance always lands, with some scenes leaning more heavily into the absurd than the truly frightening.A Trio of Heroes and the Trope of Incompetent Authority FiguresThroughout our conversation, we explore the dynamics between the film's central trio – Mike, Debbie, and Dave – and how their relationships evolve as they face the alien clown threat. We also examine the trope of young heroes pitted against incompetent authority figures, a common theme in 1950s-era B-movies that Killer Klowns from Outer Space both embraces and satirizes.Other topics we cover include:The memorable performances of the supporting cast, particularly Royal Dano as Farmer Gene Green and John Vernon as the skeptical police officerThe film's vibrant color palette and the effectiveness of the practical effectsThe Chiodo Brothers' continued work in the industry, including their involvement in Team America: World Police and Marcel the Shell with Shoes OnWhy Killer Klowns from Outer Space Endures as a Cult ClassicDespite its status as a one-and-done feature for director Stephen Chiodo, Killer Klowns from Outer Space has endured as a beloved cult classic. Its unique blend of horror and comedy, combined with the Chiodo Brothers' imaginative creature designs, has helped it stand the test of time. While it has some soapy acting and feels of its era, we ultimately find Killer Klowns from Outer Space to be a delightful and entertaining entry in the realm of 1980s horror-comedy. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Welcome to another uproarious episode of our Deep Dive spinoff! Today, we're donning our best puppet strings and diving headfirst into the deliciously absurd world of Team America: World Police. Gaius is joined by David Rosen of the Piecing It Together Podcast, who chose this comedic cult classic as his pick for Back To The Blockbuster to dive into. Join us as we unravel the genius of Trey Parker and Matt Stone—those dynamic duo masterminds behind not just the chaotic puppet show but also the absurdity that is American foreign policy. Spoiler alert: There's a lot more to this film than just puppet-on-puppet action (though we won't deny that's a highlight). Ever wondered how two guys from Colorado managed to make a political statement while simultaneously wreaking havoc with tiny marionettes? We'll explore the intricate art of puppet-making and the not-so-intricate art of throwing caution—and political correctness—to the wind! We'll break down the movie's most laugh-out-loud moments, dissect its satirical critiques, and maybe even answer the burning question: "Is it possible to laugh and cringe at the same time?" (The answer is a resounding yes, folks!) So grab your popcorn—or your favorite snack that definitely won't be thrown at the screen—and tune in as we dish out our favorite scenes and roast the questionable politics. Join us for a laugh riot that's as unpredictable as the movie itself—because when it comes to Team America, nothing is too outrageous to discuss. Get ready for a wild ride, where the only thing more ridiculous than the puppets is our attempt to make sense of it all! (Disclaimer: No puppets were harmed in the making of this episode… yet.) Hello, and welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I'm chatting with Ramsey Avery, the Production Designer behind Disney & Hulu's sci-fi horror film 'No One Will Save You'. Written and directed by Brian Duffield, ‘No One Will Save You' follows Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever), an exiled anxiety-ridden homebody, who must battle an alien that found its way into her home. What makes the movie particularly unique is that it features only 5 words of dialogue in the entire movie. This made Ramsey's job an interesting challenge as he needed to help showcase all of the unspoken storytelling through his production design. It meant that his sets and designs had to be intricately planned and executed to make up for lack of words and to use the world around the main character to explain everything from who Brynn is and her backstory to the reasoning behind her choices and her relationships with other people in town with whom she only has a single non-verbal interaction. It's a fantastic little film, and if you're in the UK you can watch it right now on Disney+, or in the USA you can find it on Hulu.In the interview, we not only discuss Ramsey's work on ‘No One Will Save You', but also his impressive back catalogue of projects including ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power', ‘Minority Report', ‘Star Trek Into Darkness', and ‘Team America: World Police'. He's also worked on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2', ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming' and the upcoming ‘Captain America: Brave New World'. Plus, he has designed various theme park attractions, including the Avengers Campus at Disney's California Adventure. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Hosted on Acast. Topics include Parker and Stone's origins, the film's overwhelming racism, and what a movie so steeped in the post-9/11 hysteria of the early 2000s means twenty years after its release. A creative comic genius known for concocting a cast of fictional characters all of whom he played live on air while also serving as the host of his national talk radio program. Hendrie actually started out as a disc jockey at WBJW 1440 AM in Winter Park, Fla., a suburb of Orlando. After 15 years working as a disc jockey at stations across the country, he realized he hated what he was doing. Moving to Los Angeles, Hendrie debuted in talk radio as a weekend host at KFI-AM 640. In 1990 at KVEN-AM in Ventura, Calif., Hendrie introduced his first fictional character on air — an Iraqi, Raj Fahneen. The Gulf War was happening and Fahneen vociferously defended Saddam Hussein. Thinking he was a real person, listeners went ballistic and the phones lit up. An entire cast of characters would evolve from that moment on, marking Hendrie's place in radio history. Hendrie's popularity resulted in the radio show going national in 1999. By 2006, he was ready to explore the next chapter of his career — acting in front of the camera. He departed from radio and quickly added to his resume which already included Trey Parker's and Matt Stone's motion picture, Team America: World Police, as well as television roles on Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Richard Appel's A.U.S.A., and Judd Apatow's North Hollywood. He also starred in Steve Levitan's Phil Hendrie and wrote, executive produced and starred in Phil at the Gate. For the last 10 years, Hendrie has regularly played characters on FOX's popular animated series King of the Hill and Futurama. Other recent television work includes roles on Giants of Radio, The Replacements, Three Strikes, Mike Birbiglia's Secret Public Journal, David Mamet's The Unit, and NBC's Teachers. He also played Nets Coach in the motion picture, Semi-pro. Hendrie continues to act today and is currently working on the motion picture, Last Call.

AMERICA! F**K YEAH! That's right! Team America! The RSA gang wraps up their Trey Parker and Matt Stone feature films. They wrap it up with the most American of all films, not to mention the only film in cinematic history to be made with puppetry! A satire of action film archetypes, American militarism, and the global implications of the politics of the United States, the film follows the titular paramilitary police force, who recruit a Broadway actor to assist in saving the world from Kim Jong Il and his conspiracy of Islamic terrorists and liberal Hollywood actors. Team America: World Police intertwines puppetry and miniature effects in a manner similar to Supermarionation, known for its use in the television series Thunderbirds, although Stone and Parker were not fans of that show. The duo worked on the script with former South Park writer Brady for nearly two years. The film had a troubled production, with various technical problems regarding the puppets and the scheduling extremes of finishing in time for its theatrical release. It also came into routine conflict with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), which returned the film multiple times with an NC-17 rating due to an explicit sex scene involving puppets. Team America: World Police premiered at the Denver Film Festival on October 14, 2004, and was theatrically released in the United States the following day. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and was a modest success at the box office, grossing over $51 million worldwide on a $32 million budget.
The boys take it back to the 90s and the early 2000s to explore the non South Park filmography of Tray Parker and Matt Stone. Even if their early works lack polish, they came out of the gate as creative and irreverent voices. MOVIES DISCUSSED: Cannibal! The Musical (1993) Orgazmo (1997) Team America: World Police (2004)

My guest today is award-winning sound supervisor, sound designer, and mixer Scott Gershin, who's audio work has enhanced a variety of different visual mediums in film, broadcast, streaming and games. Some of Scott's vast credits include major films like Pacific Rim, Hellboy 2, Chronicles of Riddick, Team America: World Police, Shrek, Star Trek, and American Beauty, and best-selling games like the Gears of War series, Epic Mickey, and the Resident Evil and Fable series. Scott has a talent for creating personalities with his voice, which has been tapped for such memorable movie characters such as Flubber, Disney's Herbie, Reapers in Blade II, The Dragon in Shrek, Kirchek in Tarzan, Leather Back in Pacific Rim, and Dog Fish in Pinocchio, to name just a few. During the interview we spoke about how much time it takes to generate deliverables for a movie, how he records sound effects like rocket launches and helicopters, what qualifies as great post-production, the difference in the mix between movies and television, how much gaming is different from other visual mediums, and much more. I spoke with Scott from studio in Burbank. On the intro I'll take a look at YouTube copyright strikes, and Ai noise-canceling headphones.

We have never talked about "Stop Making Sense" on this podcast, which happens to be one of the favorite movies of all time for both of our hosts. So we go deep on that, with the new re-release, which you must see. We then do something entirely different by discussing "Expend4bles," which is just a hilarious title. Speaking of hilarious (and offensive, like "Expend4bles") we reboot the Trey Parker puppet terrorism comedy "Team America: World Police." Timestamps: 21:22: "Stop Making Sense" 1:00:11 "Expend4bles" 1:29:02 "Team America: World Police" Thanks to Dylan Mayer and My Friend Mary, both of which are wonderful, for the music. We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@gmail.com. As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast.
Braga, King, and Ski finish up patriotic movie month with Team America: World Police. It's a movie by the South Park guys in response to how the U.S. acted after 9/11. It's also a textbook example of how jokes don't hold up after 20 years. Were they ever funny to begin with? Listen!
