Robert Norris has lived in Japan since 1983, mostly in Dazaifu, near Fukuoka, Kyushu. After retiring from university teaching in 2016, he returned to his long-standing passion for writing. The result was a heartfelt memoir about his life – and his mother's – titled: The Good Lord Willing and the Creek Don't Rise: Pentimento Memories of Mom and Me (Tin Gate, 2023). In this episode with John Ross, we hear about Robert's decades in Japan, from his early days learning Japanese through a local softball team, to his later academic career, including his time as a university dean. Naturally, the conversation also turns to books, and some of his favorite works of Japanese fiction. Green was previously the frontman of Saosin, bringing a distinct voice that became central to Circa Survive's identity. The band released their debut Juturna in 2005 on Equal Vision Records, followed by On Letting Go. Their third album, Blue Sky Noise, arrived in 2010 via Atlantic Records, marking their most mainstream release. In 2012, the band went independent with Violent Waves, before releasing Descensus and The Amulet on Sumerian and Hopeless Records. In 2022, Circa Survive announced an indefinite hiatus, which Green confirmed in 2025 had become a permanent disbandment, later reemerging as the vocalist for L.S. Dunes. A uniquely feminine precursor to Beat literature, her novel Salt House captures Bohemian life amid the sand dunes of Provincetown. Though largely dismissed upon its 1934 publication, the book has been re-plucked from obscurity thanks to a new reissue by Provincetown Arts Press. The majestic and iconic Navajo Sandstone has become ubiquitous in scenes from the Colorado Plateau. Margie Chan, Professor Emeritus at the University of Utah, has studied the Navajo Sandstone her entire career and we discuss the deposition and unique features of this Jurassic wind-blown sand. This ancient desert extended across much of Utah, Arizona, and Nevada, and combined different geological structures including dunes, lake deposits, and springs. In this first of a 2-part series, we talk about the key role that groundwater plays in the sediment deformation and coloring. The next episode delves into the role of iron in the Navajo sandstone and its connection to Mars.
