A folklorist is swept up in a journey to find the proof that supports her seemingly preposterous notion about porcupines and fairy tales. Genre: Fairy Tale   Excerpt:Tommie's conjecture concerned the many fairy tales where a sudden growth of thorny vines encompassed a tower or a castle to protect, or more likely imprison, a young woman possessing some degree of power—a princess of surpassing beauty, say, or a sorceress. That growth was typically attributed to a magic spell cast by an evil witch or jealous warlock. Tommie allowed that magic and wickedness may have been involved, or not. Either way, the wild thorny thickets that held back princes were cast out by a creature. "Have you ever heard of the prickly vine porcupine?"   The Wheel of Fiction Turns. What did it land on this time? Each Season 9 story follows a theme chosen by the Wheel of Fiction. Thirteen spokes. Eight are the themes from previous seasons. One is "Turn Again." One is a wild card. Tonight Brian sits down with Jacob from Oregon expecting to talk about Bigfoot, but boy was he wrong. What begins as a straightforward conversation about Sasquatch quickly veers into far stranger territory, as Jacob reveals a series of encounters that stretch the limits of what most people consider possible. Jacob explains how his journey into the unexplained started with disturbing reports out of the Congo and eventually led him deep into the forests of Washington and Oregon. Along the way, he collected eyewitness testimonies and experienced events that pointed to something far beyond the traditional Sasquatch narrative. He recounts chilling descriptions of massive, reptilian, winged creatures seen in remote wilderness areas, including a shocking encounter that forces both host and listener to rethink what might still exist beyond the reach of accepted science. As the conversation unfolds, Jacob addresses the skepticism surrounding these sightings, exploring how such creatures could exist outside known classifications and why dismissing them outright may be premature. The discussion expands into the realm of high strangeness, touching on theories involving environmental anomalies, unexplained aerial phenomena, and the possibility of portals, while drawing intriguing parallels to other legendary encounters often reported around the world.Throughout the episode, Jacob emphasizes the importance of approaching the unexplained with an open mind, careful investigation, and a willingness to follow the evidence wherever it leads—even when it challenges everything we think we know. The Ropen Network YouTube Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

In this week's episode, Nate reflects on his experience with knee surgery and being a "creature in the machine" (the Superorganism). He touches on the often-forgotten nature of our physical existence in a world dominated by cognitive labor and abstractions, exploring the tension between gratitude for the gains of modern medicine and knowledge of the hidden energetic cost of these technologies.  Alongside these personal reflections, Nate unpacks his thoughts on some current political events and considers timely questions of power, legitimacy, and social fragmentation in a post-peak carbon world. He adds insights from the two books he's read during recovery, putting Tolkien's Fellowship of the Ring in conversation with Kingsnorth's Against the Machine in order to highlight the growing contrast of our humanity against the larger power-oriented system. Running through the episode is an invitation to remain human, embodied, and relational even while benefiting from, critiquing, and resisting the forces that seek to turn life into components.  What does it mean to remain as a biological "creature" while living inside vast, and increasingly abstract, technological and economic systems? Where does gratitude for modern capabilities come into balance with responsibility for their costs? Finally, what practices might help preserve human meaning, agency, and connection in an increasingly mechanized world? In this chilling episode, Fred from the Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube channel returns to share a haunting account that unfolds deep within the isolated Alaskan wilderness, where land, legacy, and something unknown collide. The story centers on James Junior and his uncle Oscar, whose connection is strained by years of unresolved family tension tied to a remote piece of inherited property.Once dismissed as nothing more than an unwanted reminder of the past, the land comes with unsettling warnings from their late mother—warnings that linger long after her passing. After years of neglect, Oscar decides to reclaim the property by building a small cabin in one of the most desolate regions imaginable. What begins as a practical decision quickly spirals into something far darker.During an unexpected visit years later, Oscar experiences an overwhelming sense of being watched, followed by strange sounds, rolling fog, and the sudden appearance of a massive, unidentified figure looming near the cabin. The encounter leaves him shaken and searching for answers.Determined to confront whatever may be lurking on the land, Oscar and James Junior return in the dead of winter, armed and on edge. What they encounter instead defies explanation—deep, guttural growls echo through the frozen forest, and a rare white raven appears, a symbol regarded in many Indigenous cultures as an omen or spiritual messenger. As tension mounts and the environment turns hostile, fear overtakes reason, forcing the men into a desperate retreat as piercing screams follow them through the fog. Fred breaks down the details of this encounter and explores whether the behaviors, warning signs, and environmental cues described in this story could help others avoid similar traumatic experiences in remote wilderness areas.Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTubeGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

A place to rest, warm up, and wait it out. Except the ship isn't empty. The corridors are wrong. The cabins are shredded. The galley has been ransacked down to the metal. And the scraping in the walls isn't the sea—it's something living, swarming, and hungry. Back in November, Chad took a solo hike on the Appalachian Trail in Maryland. As he was crossing a power line cut, he heard an extremely loud whooping howl that echoed through the mountains. Seeing movement, he was able to photograph something large and upright walking into the brush. Afterward, loud wood knocks and pacing followed him through the woods – until he was able to exit onto a nearby road. The following weekend, Timothy and Chad revisited the area. Fred from the SubArctic Alaska Sasqutch YouTube Channel shares three chilling Sasquatch encounters from the Last Frontier. A surveyor working near Tuck in the late 1980s finds himself stalked by multiple creatures while mapping remote acreage north of the Parks Highway. What begins with rock throwing and glimpses of a gray-skinned, black-eyed figure through his transit scope escalates when his entire campsite ends up mysteriously hoisted into a tree. The harassment continues as trees crash across his path and shadowy figures close in from all directions.Fred also shares Brian's harrowing experience on the Richardson Highway near Delta Junction during a winter trip to help a friend with a broken-down snow machine. A black figure spotted on the snow leads to a terrifying pursuit through waist-deep powder, complete with a screaming creature and a truck that almost fails to start. The episode closes with Clint's snow machining trip near Paxton at the start of the Denali Highway, where a massive white Sasquatch with dark roots showing through its fur leaves enormous tracks in the snow. One witness ends up pinned under an 800 RMK snow machine, when his buddy drops the machine and runs.Check Out SubArctic Alaska Sasquatch Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

When tonight's guest, April, was younger, she found what she thought was an injured, jet-black dog in the woods, one day. Being the kind soul she was and is, she decided to take him home with her, so she could nurse him back to good health. Due to his jet-black coat, she named him Shadow. As time went by, she came to realize that there was something special about Shadow. He had qualities normal dogs don't have, like piercing, amber-colored eyes that seemed as if they could look right through you. Also, normal dogs don't raise up onto their back legs and walk from the living room window to the front door, so they can look out. On tonight's show, April is going to talk about her experiences with Shadow and she's going to share the details of several other Dogmen she's encountered, over the years. In the Cretaceous Period (c.100 million years ago) Egypt and North Africa were radically different environments. With vast tidal flats and mangroves, and a shallow sea, the continent fostered numerous animal and plant species. Creatures like Paralititan (sauropods); the sprinting Deltadromeus; the infamous Spinosaurus; and the newcomer Tameryraptor. These have been preserved in the fossil record from Egypt and other countries in North Africa. Today, we meet some of the inhabitants of this ancient landscape… Logo image: Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, by Paleogeeksquared, via Wikimedia. Welcome back to Sasquatch Odyssey. Tonight, we conclude The Bigfoot Journals. Seven men walked out of the hidden valley in November of seventeen ninety-nine. They carried knowledge that would haunt them for the rest of their lives... and a secret they swore never to reveal. In this final installment, we follow the Stone Expedition on their three-month winter journey home. We witness the debate that consumed them... publish or protect? We hear the oath sworn at Thornton's Tavern in Richmond, where seven survivors bound themselves to silence. And we learn what became of them all.Thomas Mercer, the scientist who died bitter in eighteen twenty-six, still regretting the discovery he could never publish. Sam Walker, who returned to the mountains he loved and passed peacefully in eighteen twenty-three. Josiah Whitfield, who found peace somewhere beyond the Mississippi. Solomon Reed, who carried his grandmother's wisdom north. Jim Sutton, whose last words were about the creatures.Young Zeke Stone, forever changed by his connection with the juvenile, gone by eighteen twenty. And Elijah Stone himself... who built a cabin in the Virginia mountains and watched the forest every night for twenty-seven years. We'll read his final journal entry, written on July fourth, eighteen twenty-six. The fiftieth anniversary of American independence. The day he passed the burden to his son. The chain of keepers had begun. Then we jump forward. Two centuries forward. To Marcus Stone, a history professor who inherits his estranged father's cabin... and discovers a trunk in the cellar that changes everything. The journals. The pendant. The truth. And finally, we witness what happens when Marcus leads a small expedition into the mountains. When the creatures reveal themselves once more. When the gesture of peace is given... and returned. This is the story of secrets that span generations. Of truths too dangerous to share. Of a family that watched and waited, keeper after keeper, century after century. And somewhere in those mountains... the creatures are still watching. They've always been watching. They always will be.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

Meanwhile, Netflix's Stranger Things series finale generated between 25 to 28 million dollars from a limited two-day theatrical run across 600 theaters on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, with exhibitors selling concession vouchers rather than traditional tickets and keeping all revenue themselves as an olive branch between the streamer and theaters. Simu Liu has publicly endorsed his Copenhagen Test co-star Melissa Barrera to play Wonder Woman in James Gunn's DC Universe, praising her stunt training as Wonder Woman-esque and calling her a total badass who puts in the work. Originally, he came on Episode 445, to talk about Dogman encounters he'd had in his main research area. Back when he came on Episode 445 to do that, he viewed the Dogmen in his research to be relatively docile. On Episode 626, however, he came back to tell us about the change in demeanor he's noticed from the Dogmen in that area. He now describes them as being dangerous. On Episode 626, he told us about several unnerving discoveries he'd made in his main research area that lead him to conclude that the Dogmen there are dangerous now. After he had shared all of those recent experiences and his opinions on them with us, there wasn't time for me to ask him the plethora of questions I had for him, so I asked Marshall if he'd come back, so I could do that and he agreed to do so. Tonight's guest, Marshall, is an experienced Ohio Dogman investigator who was featured on Episode 445, two years ago. On that show, Marshall told us about the relatively positive experiences he'd had with Dogmen in a research area he'd been doing investigations in for 30 years. On that show, he described the Dogmen in his main research area as being almost docile. Unfortunately, that's all changed. Not long ago, Marshall noticed an abrupt change in the demeanor of the Dogmen in that area. Now, he describes them as being dangerous. The area used to have a lot of visitors but Marshall has noticed that the area rarely has visitors anymore. Marshall has made several disturbing discoveries there, recently. His most disturbing discovery was finding an abandoned, destroyed tent there where the occupant, apparently, felt he was fighting for his life against something dangerous outside his tent. If you listen to Marshall talk about what he found in the tent, you'll understand why he feels the way he does about that area. We hope you'll tune in and do that.MY NEW DOGMAN PODCAST!My new podcast is called "Dogman Tales.” It features fictional stories about Dogmen and people who have experiences with them. Note from Katie: As I question nature's wisdom with regards to the third trimester of pregnancy, I thought I'd offer you one of my favorite past episodes about how doofy and convoluted evolution can get. Today on the show: They're not dinosaurs, they're from BEFORE the dinosaurs, and they're very, very, very strange. Giant apex predator shrimp thingies, centipedes you could ride on, the tully monster, evolution's most amazing mistakes! I'm joined by paleontologist and science educator Dane Pavitt. Fred from Alaska is back with a terrifying story originally told by a man named Edwin. While exploring the remote and hauntingly quiet Snake Lake with a group of Filipino friends, Edwin had a close encounter with an enormous, human-like creature. Armed with only a 9mm pistol and a sense of curiosity, he found himself face-to-face with a towering being whose intimidating presence and strange, unexplainable behavior left the entire group shaken and confused. But that's only the beginning. The episode also delves into other disturbing encounters from across Alaska's vast wilderness—stories of shadowy figures near the Nok River, and a lone man's brush with the unknown near the Sona River. Each account adds another layer to the growing body of eerie reports from the region, painting a picture of a land where the wild is truly wild—and perhaps inhabited by beings we've yet to understand. These firsthand tales highlight the fear, mystery, and awe experienced by those who have crossed paths with something extraordinary—and serve as a stark reminder that in Alaska's deep wilderness, we may not be as alone as we think.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.
