They’re called fantastic animals, brightly colored wooden creatures inspired by the world of Mexican magical realism. Giant versions of these animals are on a tour across the U.S., celebrating Mexico’s rich cultural heritage and promoting diplomacy during a contentious time. Senior arts correspondent Jeffrey Brown checked them out in San Francisco for our arts and culture series, CANVAS. PBS News is supported by - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/about/funders. Our first story comes from Baker in West Texas, who shares an incredible tale from 1985 about his newborn son's strange sleeping patterns and unexplained nocturnal visitors. What started as puzzling midnight crying episodes soon revealed something far more extraordinary when family members began witnessing shadowy figures hovering over the baby's crib, and blankets mysteriously appearing to keep the infant warm during cold desert nights. We then explore three unsettling encounters submitted by Dell from California's Sierra Nevada mountains, spanning from childhood to motherhood. Her experiences range from a terrifying figure spotted during a lightsaber battle when she was nine years old, to a disturbing bedroom intrusion involving a four-foot creature with glowing yellow eyes approaching her newborn daughter. The final encounter involves phantom voices of her children calling out in the night from outside their remote home - but when Dell checks, both kids are safely asleep in their beds. I must've been a kid when I first heard the palindrome “Able I was ere I saw Elba”. Napoleon didn't mean a lot to me at the time. “Elba” meant even less. Decades later, I had learned a little more about Napoleon and his time there, but not that all that much it turns out. And then came Mark Braude's The Invisible Emperor: Napoleon on Elba from Empire to Exile (Penguin Press, 2018)… This unexpected and absorbing book delves into the story of Napoleon's exile on the island of Elba following his abdication in 1814. After his escape and return to France for the “100 Days,” Napoleon was, of course, finally defeated at Waterloo in 1815. The Invisible Emperor explores a period in between the “bigger-ticket” events with which readers may be more familiar, a time and space in which Napoleon at once out of sight and more in contact with everyday people than perhaps at any other point in his career. Written in multiple short chapters comprising four parts that follow the seasons of Bonaparte's ten-month stay on Elba, The Invisible Emperor reconsiders the Napoleonic legend from the point of view of a moment of relative quiet in a modest setting. Carefully researched and a pleasure to read, it challenges aspects of the towering historical figure's mythology. The space, timeline, and scale of this history may be small, but this is a Napoleon we don't typically hear about. Presented in a narrative rich with curious details and a surprising intimacy, The Invisible Emperor manages to humanize an epic history and life about which so much has been written over the past two centuries. Roxanne Panchasi is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Simon Fraser University. The largest sea creature of all time was recently discovered—but in the middle of a desert in Peru! Scientists found the fossilized remains of an ancient whale, believed to have lived over 30 million years ago. This massive creature, called Perucetus colossus, could have weighed up to 200 tons, rivaling or even surpassing today's blue whales. Finding it in a desert is wild, but back in its day, that area was underwater, part of a prehistoric ocean. Its bones were so dense and heavy that researchers think it might've been a slow swimmer, spending most of its time floating and feeding. This discovery is rewriting what we know about ancient marine life and just how gigantic creatures could get! Tonight's story comes from a mother named Sarah who reached out to me through a mutual acquaintance after years of keeping silent about what happened to her family in the remote forests of Alabama. When she first contacted me, she could barely get through the telling without breaking down, especially when describing the night she heard her own voice calling her youngest son into the darkness—while she was standing right beside him.Sarah and her two boys, ages ten and twelve, fled to an inherited cabin in the Bankhead National Forest to escape an abusive relationship. What should have been a healing retreat in nature became a two-month ordeal that defies conventional explanation. The creatures that stalked her family didn't just throw rocks or make strange vocalizations—they learned. They studied. They mimicked the family's voices with perfect accuracy, always trying to lure one of them outside. What makes Sarah's account particularly disturbing is the apparent intelligence behind these encounters. These weren't random animal behaviors but calculated attempts to separate and take her youngest son, Ben. The female creature that Sarah describes seemed to be mourning a lost child of her own, leading to questions about what these beings actually are and what they truly wanted with a human boy. The historical pattern Sarah uncovered in old newspaper archives—children vanishing in that exact area for decades—adds another layer of horror to her experience. Each disappearance left behind the same massive footprints that were always dismissed by authorities. Some reports even describe tall, hair-covered figures seen with smaller companions that looked almost, but not quite, human. Three years later, Ben still dreams about the "forest mommy" who called to him.At sixteen, he's drawn to wooded areas in ways that terrify his mother, and during a recent camping trip, teachers found him standing at the forest's edge at 3 AM, fully awake, listening to something only he could hear calling from the darkness.Sarah's story raises uncomfortable questions about the nature of these beings and their interest in our children. Are they simply animals operating on instinct? Or are they something more complex—intelligent enough to plan, patient enough to wait, and alien enough that we may never understand their true intentions? As always, I leave it to you to decide what you believe. But Sarah's warning bears repeating: if you ever hear a familiar voice calling from the darkness, especially if it sounds like someone you know is standing right beside you, don't answer. Some things that watch us from the forests have learned our voices, and they're very, very patient.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Untold Radio AMBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

You and I are creatures of habit, good and bad. We don't always do things because they 'work', we do them because we did them Yesterday. Last week. Month. Year. We do them because, we're sleepwalking through (parts of our) life. We do them because they're familiar, not effective. Because our parents did them, so now we do. We do them because they are habits we unconsciously adopted, not actions we consciously chose. And then one day, we find ourselves trapped in a psychological, emotional and behavioural operating system that keeps us in holding pattern of... blah. Not optimising our time, talent, creativity, intellect or genetic potential. This is a chat about waking up. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If you'd like to make a contribution to Patrick's GoFundMe account, to help him avoid being evicted from his home, his GoFundMe account is located at... https://gofund.me/4e59c3d8Tonight's guest, Patrick, has had paranormal experiences since he was a little boy. It's bad enough when you have experiences with unexplained beings and phenomena, especially when you're a child, but when it seems like they're doing all they can to mortify you, that makes it that much worse. That's how Patrick says his paranormal experiences have been, for as long as he can remember. Unfortunately, starting last April, Dogmen started throwing their hats into the ring. Now, in addition to all the other beings and entities Patrick has had frightening encounters with, he's had multiple encounters with Dogmen too. The Dogmen he's had encounters with have done various things to get an emotional response out of Patrick, but one thing, in particular, really shook him up more than any other. We hope you'll listen to tonight's livestream episode of the show, so you can listen to Patrick share all of his experiences and more.MY NEW DOGMAN PODCAST!My new podcast is called "Dogman Tales.” It features fictional stories about Dogmen and people who have experiences with them. Whenyou read all the Great Commission passages in the Gospels and Acts, Jesus sentthe disciples to preach and share the message of the His suffering, death, burial, and resurrection to all the nations and every people and language group. But we need to remember salvation doesn't happen in groups but in individuals, one at a time. Each individual person is loved by God, and they experience His graceand salvation one at a time. That's why today in our chat we are focusing onthe numbers of individuals that are alive and living on planet Earth that need theopportunity to hear and respond to the Gospel. Todaythe world has the largest population of people in history. As of August 4, 2025,the world population is estimated to be approximately 8.24 billion people andgrowing at rate of 0.84% per year. We are being told that approximately 3.4billion people (roughly 42% of the world's population of 8.24 billion as ofAugust 2025) are considered part of unreached people groups (UPGs), meaningthey have little to no access to the Gospel. This includes individuals withminimal or no exposure to the message of Jesus Christ or salvation. Alsotoday, there are approximately 17,400 distinct people groups worldwide whendefined by ethnolinguistic and cultural boundaries. Of these, about 7,280 to7,400 are considered unreached, meaning they have less than 2% evangelicalChristians and less than 5% overall Christian adherents, with no indigenouschurch capable of evangelizing the group without external help. Within UPGs,189 unengaged unreached people groups (UUPGs), totaling over 5.7 millionpeople, have no missionaries, no outreach, and no Christian resources likeBibles in their language. Estimates suggest 66,000 people die daily withouthearing the Gospel, emphasizing the urgency of missionary efforts. Jesuscared for individuals. In Luke chapter 8, He told His disciples, "Get inthe boat. Let's go to the other side." Despite ministering to crowds innorthern Galilee, He crossed over for two demon-possessed men, one ready to befreed and come to Him. Jesus went to where he was to share the good news. Myfriend, today will you join me to go to the other side. Youcan be part of this mission through prayer. Right now I'm asking for people tojoin me in praying for 400 pastors I've met in India, many of them working withunreached people groups. I need 300 more people to pray for these pastors. Mydad began working with this fellowship of pastors over 30 years ago, and it hasgrown significantly. They need your prayers, support, and encouragement. Yourprayers alone can make a difference. Every believer praying, giving, and goingis essential to the fulfillment of the Great Commission! In this power-packed teaching, Ambassador Elisha dives deep into one of the most misunderstood truths in scripture—what it really means to be made in the image of God. Too many people define it by race, gender, or physical features. But in this episode, you'll uncover the truth: being made in God's image is about authority and glory—your divine capacity to function like God on earth. From personal stories to eye-opening biblical insight, Elisha reveals how failing to walk in that authority stains God's reputation through us—and how to step boldly into your divine design.

This week, the Boulet Brothers sink their claws into the new horror film Together- a grotesque, body-melding tale of romantic codependency starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie. But the horror of love doesn't stop there. The Boulets also explore iconic (and toxic) relationships in horror history, reveal some twisted tales from their own romance, and ask each other the kinds of questions that could tear any couple apart. It's love, loss, and limb-fusing terror… just in time for date night. One evening, in November of 2011, tonight's guest and a friend of hers had just arrived back at his home, after grocery shopping, when the unthinkable happened. She had her two small sons with her at the time. His dogs, which normally were mellow as can be were freaking out. Not knowing what was causing them to be upset, tonight's guest and her friend hurried her sons into his home, so they could come back out to investigate. What happened next is something that's still, to this day, consumes her thoughts. We hope you'll tune in for tonight's livestream episode of the show, so you can hear her explain what happened that night. Of course, she'll also be ready to answer questions from listeners in the live chat too. In this episode, Brian welcomes guests Jim Peters and Joe Jenkins from Illinois, who share their remarkable encounters and experiences hiking in the Shawnee National Forest. Retired law enforcement officers, Jim and Joe recount a series of mysterious events, including strange buzzing sounds, unexplained lights, large whooping noises, and sightings of what they believe to be Bigfoot. They discuss their transition from skeptics to believers over twelve years of research, gathering compelling audio, photos, and physical evidence. The conversation also touches on tree structures, feelings of foreboding, and a broader discussion on the nature of these phenomena, weighing the possibilities of flesh and blood creatures versus more paranormal explanations. This episode offers an intriguing look into the world of Bigfoot research and the high strangeness encountered by seasoned investigators.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Untold Radio AM00:00 Welcome and Introductions 00:37 Early Adventures and Unexpected Encounters 02:00 The Mysterious Buzzing Sound 05:10 Strange Lights in the Night 07:08 The First Howl and Bigfoot Realization 13:53 Ongoing Research and Strange Experiences 26:17 A Sheriff's Encounter with the Unknown 29:12 Gorilla or Bigfoot? 30:30 A Mysterious Encounter in the Timber 34:21 The Giant Nest Discovery 39:28 Tree Structures and Wood Knocks 44:04 Flesh and Blood vs. High Strangeness 50:00 Sharing Experiences and Final ThoughtsBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.

In this gripping episode, Fred from Alaska shares firsthand accounts from Donnie and Becca, siblings from a village in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, who had an eerie encounter with a mysterious 'Harry Man' during a winter camping trip a decade ago. The narrative follows their experience as they camped out alone using their uncle's snow machine and tent, culminating in a terrifying face-to-face encounter with a creature that looked like a caveman.Fred also shares Bernard's chilling story from the mid-1960s, detailing his frightening experiences while building his cabin in the Copper River Valley. Despite feeling watched and encountering unexplained noises and movements, Bernard's encounter escalated to a dramatic climax when a large, human-like creature confronted him through his cabin window. These riveting stories are shared to raise awareness and inform others of the possible dangers lurking in the Alaskan wilderness.Get Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteSupport Our SponsorsVisit Untold Radio AM 00:00 Introduction and Setting the Scene 01:02 The Camping Trip Begins 04:15 A Mysterious Encounter 06:19 The Creature Revealed 13:26 The Aftermath and Rescue 17:08 Bernard's Story: The Copper River Legacy 21:02 Setting Up the Wood Stove 22:02 A Creepy Encounter 23:36 Strange Noises and Sights 29:57 Face-to-Face with the Unknown 33:50 A Night of Terror 38:13 Morning Aftermath 40:22 Seeking Help and ReflectionBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.
