By The Glass is a podcast about the people who work with food & booze. It's big in Tasmania. Hosts: Chris Komorek & Ali Robertson Keep an eye out for Memorable Meals, coming in 2019.
Ben Dennis is the manager of Peking Duk, Hands Like Houses, Benson and Pinkiscool. He also loves soup so much, he's earned himself the enviable nickname of broth monster. Ben joins us on By The Glass to share his journey with the big bowl of steaming goodness, including the fateful trip to a supermarket food court that changed the course of his life forever. He does okay in the pop quiz, but the quiz master was tough. Theme music by Max Savage
Benny Walker joined us from his home in Echuca Moama, along the Murray River. His new album, Chosen Line, explores a range of different themes, most notably on the title track. And while Benny was presented with four choices in the By The Glass pop-quiz, perhaps it was destiny that saw him select one he wasn't as confident in. But, as you'll find out, he embraced the challenge. Theme music by Max Savage.
As far as surprises go, we haven't had a bigger one on By The Glass to date. Alice Fraser is the production coordinator for Tame Impala, and tour manager for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Arguably two of Australia's hottest bands right now. But the surprise we refer to is not in regards to her pop quiz performance, although it was definitely surprising, but rather her secondary and perhaps much cooler secret life - what could it be? Theme music by Max Savage
Maria Amato is the General Manager and CFO of Australian Independent Records Labels Association (AIR) and somewhat of an obsessive cookbook collector. During this episode, Maria explains the important work that AIR does for Australian independent musicians, shares her experience growing up with an Italian background and performs very strongly in the pop-quiz - becoming the first guest to take home the ultimate prize! Theme music by Max Savage
Known for his cult-like radio programme, Tower of Song, Henry Wagons has recently been working on what the Australian Parliamentary House Committee would surely deem a 'new religious movement'; Delivered Live. During this episode, Henry recalls growing up with Polish cooking, spreading dinner across three different households and performs well below par in the Pop Quiz. He did not - we repeat - did NOT take the bonus question. *Recorded prior to the latest Covid-19 outbreak in Victoria. Theme music by Max Savage
Alex Lahey joins us from a bedroom-turned-studio at her Mum's house in Melbourne. Had things panned out differently this year, she would be in the midst of playing to fans around the world. Instead, she's recording music in the home she grew up in. The result is the aptly-named EP Between the Kitchen and the Living Room. During this episode, Alex shares her experience growing up with a Greek-Egyptian heritage, tells us where to find the best falafel in Melbourne and performs admirably in the pop-quiz (in the sense that she now owes us a beer). Cheers, Alex! Theme music by Max Savage
By The Glass is back for season two. It's been a long time between drinks, and things will be a bit different this time 'round. Having both left Adelaide 12-months ago, Ali is now living in Hobart, while Chips is in Melbourne. The studio professionalism you've come to love from the podcast has been ditched in favour of an unnamed online video conferencing platform, and the guests are different too. We'll be chatting with people in the music industry. Musicians, promoters, tour managers and sound engineers - plus so many more. But, as The Cat Empire once sang, some things have changed, but some things never change, and so we return with the notoriously-tricky, crowd-pleasing pop-quiz. Subscribe today! Chips. We all have a soft spot for the crisp potato, but what is it that makes you keep wanting more? Professor Charles Spence is the head of the cross-modal research laboratory at Oxford University. There is no one on earth that has conducted more research on chips (or crisps) than Professor Spence. He joined Chris & Ali on By The Glass to discuss how something as simple as the colour and texture of the packet can influence your experience. Professor Spence's research goes far beyond the chip packet, too, having worked alongside renown chef Heston Blumenthal at The Fat Duck in the UK. His studies encompass how factors around you - like lighting, sound and even the weight of your cutlery - can change your experience when dining. His newest book, Gastrophsycics: The New Science Of Eating (Penguin books), discusses how to create sticky memories, after that 'perfect' meal is finished. *Disclaimer; this episode may cause you to need a packet of crisps. Throughout our lives, we yearn to find "the best job in the world". Businesses advertise positions with the title, travel companies run competitions that, if you win, you'll have what everyone wants - but only for a short time. Jane joined Chris & Ali on By The Glass to explain what she does, and proved exactly why she's so good at it. Theme music courtesy of Max Savage Image by By The Glass Recorded live at Mache

Tony Love's friends know they don't need to worry too much about bringing a bottle of wine to dinner, but that if they do, it doesn't have to be fancy. Love is the food & wine writer for NewsCorp, which means he sees - and drinks - a lot of wine. He joined Chris & Ali on By The Glass to discuss his methods of tasting and reviewing wines, sometimes at 8am in the morning, and explained why Midnight Oil holds a dear place in his heart.
