Labour Fair 2025: Labour now: Union responses to the polycrisis

In episode eight, we return to the George Brown College Labour Fair and a discussion with Ontario Federation of Labour president Laura Walton and chief steward and second vice president of OPSEU/SEFPO Local 556 Jeff Brown. We discuss the multiple issues facing the labour movement, union priorities and, in this age of polycrisis, what exactly we are working for. Speaking to the upcoming federal elections, Walton says: “I think we all can agree it's not going to be an NDP federal government. It's either gonna be Liberals or Conservatives. And I call them cancer and chemo; one's gonna kill you, the other one's gonna make you sick. We're going to be under, in Ontario, two governments that are not worker friendly, both federally and provincially. And it's going to be incumbent on workers to really embrace organizing principles … Now's not the time to be quiet. Now's the time that we're going to have to join our voices together to really push back." Reflecting on the how the trade war may impact already underfunded Ontario colleges, Brown says: “The colleges extend into so many fields in our province. Obviously healthcare, nursing community workers, but also things like all the skilled trades, forestry, aviation. I mean, these are the workers in communities that are the backbone of our economy … and the concern that being this underfunded, now with this trade war … the provincial government will use this as an excuse to further starve the system.” About today's guests:  Laura Walton is the president of the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) Canada's largest provincial labour federation. Walton served as president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees' Ontario School Boards Council of Unions (OSBCU) starting in 2019. She also served on the CUPE Ontario Executive Board. With a firm belief in the equalizing power of inclusive public education, Walton led her 55,000 coworkers across Ontario to withdraw their labour for two days in November 2022 in protest of the Ford government using the notwithstanding clause to ram through legislation that imposed a contract on CUPE education workers. Previously she served as president of CUPE Local 1022 which represents the education workers of Hastings and Prince Edward County District School Board. Dr. Jeff Brown is an experienced educator, researcher, and labour activist.  He is a full-time professor in the Liberal Arts and Sciences department at George Brown College in Toronto and Chief Steward/2nd Vice-President of OPSEU Local 556, representing unionized faculty at George Brown.  He is also a member of the Ontario College Faculty Divisional Executive. A state board that oversees correctional facilities decided last Thursday to allow Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey to continue to house incarcerated young people; the Board of State and Community Corrections's evaluation was that the juvenile hall had met the minimum requirements on staffing levels and safety checks. In making the decision, the Board of State and Community Corrections also found that the Los Angeles County Probation Department's efforts to meet use-of-force training and other requirements were improving. This follows the state regulatory body's notice in February that the correctional hall would need to close if these demands weren't met.   Today on AirTalk, we update listeners on how the juvenile hall got to this point with LAist mental health reporter Robert Garrova. We also hear from Jonathan Byrd, 2nd Vice President & Chief Steward for the L.A. County Deputy Probation Officers' Union, and Milinda Kakani, Youth Justice Director for Children's Defense Fund – California.   With files from LAist; read Robert's latest story here.   We reached out to the L.A. WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca has a diverse annual motorsports calendar. It began this year in April with the Trans Am Superfest and continues through mid-October with the Velocity Invitational. Next month is the busiest time of the year with the iconic facility heavy into the mix of Monterey Auto Week. Barry Toepke, Director of Heritage Events & Public Relations at WeatherTech Raceway, is our guest this week on The Weekly Driver Podcast. A guest three times previously, Toepke shares with co-host Bruce Aldrich in Episode #233 the upcoming schedule, notably the Monterey Pre-Reunion (Aug. 13-14) and Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (Aug. 17-20). The annual Reunion, according to raceway officials, is a "museum revving to life with hundreds of historic and period-correct race and sports cars from nearly every era." WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is approaching its busiest of the season, Monterey Auto Week. Besides the usual collections of vintage racing, the venue this year is the official start of a year-long celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Barry Toepke, Director of Heritage Events & Public Relations at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Cultivated from private collections or museums and no longer driven in competition, more the 50 vehicles with pedigrees as overall winners or first in class at LeMans will be highlighted in a heritage legends building. The cars' histories will also be detailed in video, historic images and storyboards. The first Porsche (1970) and the last Ferrari (1965) to win the overall title will be included in the historic display. "It will arguably be the largest collection of authentic Le Mans-winning cars ever in one place in America," said Toepke. "We'll be the kickoff launch event for a year-long celebration. It's quite an honor and we don't take it lightly." Representatives of the race held yearly in June on the Circuit de la Sarthe have been invited to the festivities. Motorsports Reunion officials recently announced Tom Kristensen of Denmark, the record-holding, nine-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans will serve as Grand Marshal and will autograph sessions. The previous week at WeatherTech Raceway more than 300 historic race cars, most competing days later in the Reunion, will get valuable track time in a more relaxed and less-crowded environment. The field is comprised of carefully selected entries by our selection committee. I am delighted to be talking to a long-time friend and fabulous leader in our industry today! Jochem-Jan Sleiffer (JJ) has tons of experience in our industry! He is the Area President of Operations for Hilton for the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey.  In this episode, JJ discusses his career, shares his thoughts on what will happen in the industry in the future, and talks about skills needed within the industry. We hope you enjoy today's encouraging and optimistic conversation with JJ Sleiffer! JJ's bio JJ Sleiffer is responsible for Hilton's portfolio of hotels in the Middle East, Africa & Turkey. Across this dynamic region, Hilton has more than 170 hotels across eight market-leading brands and is rapidly growing with more than 177 hotels in its pipeline. In his first year in the region, he was ranked #2 in the 2020 Hotelier Middle East Power 50, the annual ranking of the industry's most influential figures.  JJ's background Before his current position, which he assumed in January 2020, JJ spent three years as Hilton's Senior Vice President Operations, Continental Europe. In the role, he oversaw operations in multiple markets from Russia to Iceland and the Iberian Peninsula. Having joined Hilton as Chief Steward at Hilton Amsterdam in 1990, he has subsequently held multiple positions across Europe over the past 30 years. As well as several General Manager positions in countries including Germany, France, Greece, and Belgium, he previously led Hilton's Northern and Central Europe region. JJ graduated from high school in Huizen, the Netherlands, before obtaining a bachelor's degree in Facilities Management (1990) and has subsequently attained an EMBA degree in Hospitality and Tourism Leadership (2014). Joining the meetings and events industry JJ knew from a very young age that he wanted to work in the hotel business. As soon as he was old enough, he got a job at a local restaurant during the summer holidays, washing dishes. A year later, he worked as a porter at a local hotel. The following year, he started working in the hotel breakfast room, carrying plates.  A great opportunity While studying Facility Management, JJ was offered the opportunity to do a six-month internship at Hilton. He started working as a Chief Steward for Hilton a year later. After that, he spent eight-and-a-half years in Brussels in various roles in food and beverage, meetings, banqueting, and sales. He moved on to Athens, then London, then back to Brussels, where he became a General Manager. After that, he moved to Paris, became the Area Manager for France, then Vice President for Northern Europe, and then Vice President for Eastern Europe and Western Europe. Since January 2020, he has been the Area President of Operations for the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey. A great company to work for! As a company, Hilton gives its team members great career and learning opportunities! They offer online learning, and Hilton University has a library of approximately 5,000 courses for people at every level within the organization.   Mentors It is vital to find a mentor in your organization. If you are in a small organization, you can look for a mentor outside of it to ensure that you keep on growing. Leaders Leaders should promote people to positions that challenge them. That will help them to learn faster. Advisors All businesses- even small businesses, should have an advisory team to help them to keep on growing. It is helpful to have advisors who are not in the same business as you and do not think in the same way as you. Growing your business To grow your business, you have to challenge yourself and be willing to be pushed beyond any boundaries you may have set for yourself. One of the team Starting as a dishwasher and rising through the ranks in the hotel made it easy for the rest of the team to accept JJ as one of them after he became the General Manager. Aligning the expectations In the hotel business, the expectations of the operator and owner of the property need to be aligned. For that to happen, good communication is vital. Something special When groups of people get together and have face-to-face contact, it is something special! That is why JJ feels confident that the hotel, hospitality, and meetings industries will soon come back again.  Coronavirus COVID forced people to act quickly and do things differently, whether that involved scaling up or down or changing their business model.  Hilton managed to change its business model and become event-ready for the meetings industry quite quickly after the start of the pandemic.  What JJ learned from the pandemic JJ learned that in times of crisis, teams work together a lot better than in normal times. People are also more willing to share information in times of crisis. Promoting the hospitality business as a whole The message JJ has been hearing from the various panels he is on is that we should stop promoting one hotel chain and promote the hospitality business and the destination as a whole. A positive business People see the hospitality industry as a positive business to be in right now. Hilton has 167 hotels in the Middle East, Africa, and Turkey currently. They will be opening another 150 hotels in that region within the next three to five years.  A big growth market Saudi Arabia is a big growth market for Hilton. They operate fourteen hotels there currently and will be opening another forty hotels within the next three years.  Developing local talent Hilton has a Manager of the Future program through which they develop locals because their goal is to operate all their hotels with local talent. Saudi Arabia has a lot of potential talent because most of its population is very young, and they will all need to find work.  Finding people with the right skills Hilton has specialized programs to grow local talent quickly and provide opportunities for locals through the organization. They focus mainly on doing that in all their markets.  Vacancies Hilton has 800 staff vacancies, so they will look at increasing their pay grades. There is no employment market in the Middle East, so they will have to fly people in and actively recruit people from surrounding countries to fill the vacancies. That is a challenge because competition for the best talent is fierce.  Internal training programs Hilton is known for developing people. They have many internal training programs to grow and develop their new employees, so people do not have to come from hotel school to work for them.  Culture  People like to join Hilton because it is known as a great place to work and their culture is all about the people. They have recently ranked fourth-best workplace in the Middle East and fourth-best workplace for women in the GCC.  Skills Those who might consider working for Hilton need to be energetic, creative, passionate, confident, open, and digitally savvy. They also need to be interested in serving people. Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website Connect with Jochem-Jan Sleiffer On LinkedIn

Stick around to hear his advice for teachers and parents on fostering creativity and innovation at home and in the classroom. “Creativity is the thinking part and innovation is the doing part. So, people have creative thoughts all the time. How do we empower them to actually take action and move it forward?” - Dr. Jim Friedman Jim's Tips for Teachers and Parents: We need to reinvigorate our own creativity, empower students who have lost their creativity, and maintain those who are actively using their creativity. Create a “failure bonus” in your classroom or home. If your kids are willing to go further beyond the risk, share their mistakes, and identify the learning they had to make their learning better, they get a bonus or a grade boost. The new postmaster general is actively working to destroy the product, the service and the integrity of the United States postal service. That's from the latest My Labor Radio podcast, out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Workers are losing rights, are losing jobs, are losing lives. One thousand Brazilians have been dying every day, due to coronavirus for the last three weeks; 40 million Brazilians have no jobs. That's from the Brazil Worker's Podcast, one of the Labor Radio Podcast Network's newest members. The Brazil Worker's Podcast  is an English language broadcast on labor news and current affairs in Brazil, Latin America and opinions on the struggle of the working class around the world. Business law is developing in a new direction in Canada. That direction is firmly based on profitability and material prosperity. However, that prosperity is increasingly being linked to a more sustainable, environmentally responsible, and widely shared model of carrying on business. B Lab is an international NGO that certifies B Corps - for-profit companies that demonstrate their positive impact on society and the environment. Behind the camera, Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh has taken on all types of challenges in filmmaking, from shooting low-budget indie movies with a handheld camera to helming blockbuster franchise flicks starring some of Hollywood’s biggest names (the “Ocean’s Eleven” series). However, as he tells it, that’s nothing compared to running a spirits brand. “This is like shooting a movie every day for the rest of your life,” he said in an interview included in this episode of Taste Radio. “There’s just no pause button. And if you slow down, the person behind you with their brand is just going to run right over you.” Soderbergh is the creator of Singani63, a unique spirit distilled from grapes indigenous to the Andes Mountains of Bolivia. Previously a devoted vodka drinker, Soderbergh fell for singani while on location (in Bolivia) filming the movie “Che” in 2007 and felt compelled to bring it to the U.S. market. Technically defined as a brandy, singani is relatively unknown to American consumers and Soderbergh has had a front row seat to the challenges of launching a brand with a high education factor. As part of our conversation, Soderbergh discussed how he’s leaned on his experience as a storyteller to drive the creative vision for the brand, parallels between the movie and beverage businesses and why he’s having more fun running a spirits company than filmmaking. In our second interview, we go from singani to Sheets-- as in Nate Sheets, the founder and CEO of the top-selling honey brand in America, Nature Nate’s. A former marketing executive, Sheets started with a single beehive but now has a company that will produce over 20 million lbs. of honey this year. Sheets explained how the combination of a highly effective label revamp and an intense focus on micro-marketing and innovation helped fuel the company’s evolution. He also discussed why his wear-it-on-your-sleeve spirituality has been a key component of the company’s mission and business strategy. And in the latest edition of Elevator Talk, we’re joined by Hansen Sheih, the founder of One Culture Foods, a maker of Asian-inspired sauces and instant noodle cups. Show notes: 2:30: A Sweet and Spicy Homecoming: The hosts crunch and munch their way through a swath of snacks brought back from the Sweets & Snacks Expo, an annual convention showcasing new candy and snack products. They also feel the heat from samples of Olde Virden Red Hot sprinkles and chat about a recent interview with Mike Brown, the founder of “World’s Strongest Coffee” brand Death Wish Coffee. 13:51: Interview: Steven Soderbergh, Filmmaker & Creator of Singani63 -- From critically acclaimed films “Sex, Lies and Videotape” and “The Limey” to Hollywood blockbusters “Erin Brockovich,” and “Traffic,” Soderbergh has been hailed as one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation. While the Academy Award-winning director continues to make his mark in the movie business, he’s hoping to do the same off-screen as a beverage entrepreneur. We sat down with Soderbergh at ThirstBoston, an industry event showcasing innovation and education in the world of craft cocktails, where he spoke about his unique spirit brand Singani63 and his experience wading through the beverage business. 36:33: Interview: Nathan Sheets, President/Chief Steward, Nature Nate’s -- In an interview recorded at BevNET HQ, Sheets discussed the rise of Nature Nate’s from its humble beginnings to being the number one honey brand in America. As part of our conversation, he explained how micro-marketing has yielded significant traction for the brand and why he believes that “if you’re not failing enough, you’re not trying enough new things.” 58:41: Elevator Talk: Hansen Sheih, Founder/CEO, One Culture Foods -- A maker of sauces and instant noodle cups infused with global flavors, One Culture Foods is focused on creating convenient, crafted products for at-home chefs and everyday consumers alike.

Despondent at how little citizens’ voices were being heard and how little impact the average person could have in the way society was being run, an Australian entrepreneur by the name of Adam Jacoby decided to stop moaning on Twitter and start doing something about it. The result is MiVote, a voting platform, information platform, and political movement set on increasing the degree to which the will of people is being heard in Australian politics. Inspired by the success of Pia Mancini’s DemocracyOS and Partido De La Red in Argentina, MiVote has built a platform which was recently awarded the Grand Global Challenge Award at the Singularity University’s Global Innovation Summit (founded by the infamous Ray Kurzweil).
