Born and raised in TX before relocating to NYC in later years, Max grew up with his older brother Andrew with influences from the punk and post punk groups of the 1970's and 80's. Along with two other members, they formed the amazing Parquet Courts and have since made a name for themselves amongst the greats of our generation. Today Max resides in DC and plays in another group called MaxBand and have released two albums and are currently working on a new LP! It was a totAL pleasure speaking to Max as PQ is one of my favorite contemporary groups. Enjoy!

Joshua (Josh) Baldwin; Drummer/Artist joins me in The Engine Room this week to discuss his musical journey. Josh was born in to an artistic family and he spent much of his childhood drawing and reading art books. He began to learn the drums while attending Magill primary school which had a really strong music program run by Ruth Bone. His parents encouraged him to play and sent him to have lessons with Dennis Johnson. A couple of years later he received his first set of drums at the age of 10. After completing High School he studied music at the Elder Conservatorium. During his school years he played in a variety of ensemble's, including performances with James Morrison, Don Burrows and Grace Knight. His first regular band was an alternative/indie/rock band that began to play regularly around Adelaide in late 2006 called 'Masterthief'. Josh completed the Bachelor of Music Jazz Performance program in 2005 and was the recipient of an undergraduate Jazz Award for drums. He received 1st Class Honours in Music (Jazz Performance) in 2006, and in 2007 he was awarded the Adelaide City Council Award Most Outstanding Jazz Honours Graduate. Josh has established himself as one of Adelaide's leading drummers and has performed in concert with leading national and international jazz artists, including George Garzone, Jamie Oehlers and Paul Grabowksy (with whom he performed at the Adelaide Festival Centre for the launch of the Adelaide Festival of the Arts) and at a masterclass assisting Joel Frahm. Josh performed as part of the support act for the Brad Mehldau Trio at the 2009 Adelaide East End Jazz Festival. Josh completed a Law/Music double degree at the University of Adelaide in 2010 after which he moved to France, which inspired him to pursue art more seriously and eventually led him to establish a career as a full-time visual artist. Josh and his wife Colline spent quite a few years traveling between France and South Australia, when in France he worked as a full-time artist, and performing when he was back in his home town with a variety of ensembles including the Josh Baldwin Trio and Josh Baldwin band. Josh and his wife returned to Australia in 2017, he regularly performs with Big Wigs Trio, Gymkhana, 5-sided Cube, Lou Blackwell and the French Set, Surahn, Amelia Ryan and Michael Griffiths, Max Savage Blues Band, Adelaide Society Swing Orchestra, Karen DeNardi's Golden Boy Project, Mark Ferguson Trio, Kym Purling Trio, Max Grynchuk Big Band, and Christina Guala. Music: Intro "Band It About", written and recorded by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Outro: "Belvedere" written by Joshua Baldwin which is track 3 off of his “Rockpools” album released in 2021. Performed by THE JOSH BALDWIN QUARTET whose members are Joshua Baldwin, Brett Heddle, James Muller, Matthew Sheens, and Lyndon Gray. Links: http://www.joshuabaldwinart.com/ http://instagram.com/joshbaldwinart Josh is endorsed by 'Rodgers Drumlab' (he plays their snare drums): rodgersdrumlab.com Josh will be performing with Louise Blackwell during her ‘A Night In Paris' Fringe show on Sunday, March 13th https://adelaidefringe.com.au/fringetix/a-night-in-paris-af2022 All of the BAND IT ABOUT links including one to support, rate, and review can be located here: https://linktr.ee/banditaboutpodcastseries Thanks for listening! Maxband - "Cut It Loose," a 2020 single on Maximum Band Recordings. With his side project Maxband, Max Savage of Parquet Courts steps out from behind the drum kit and grabs a guitar. He shares vocal duties with co-founder and bassist Patrick Smith of A Beacon School. Their first release was a limited-run cassette EP titled Perfect Strangers in 2018, but they reemerged in late 2020 with a new EP titled Top of the Stairs. Today's featured track follows the Parquet path of lo-fi post-punk. Maxband explained toUnder the Radar: “‘Cut It Loose’ was the first song we wrote for Top of the Stairs, and it functions as a good mission statement for where we are as a band: it was our first fully collaborative effort that was fleshed out from an idea that Patrick brought into a practice space, and the first song where Max and Patrick split vocal duties.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ben Dennis is the manager of Peking Duk, Hands Like Houses, Benson and Pinkiscool. He also loves soup so much, he's earned himself the enviable nickname of broth monster. Ben joins us on By The Glass to share his journey with the big bowl of steaming goodness, including the fateful trip to a supermarket food court that changed the course of his life forever. He does okay in the pop quiz, but the quiz master was tough. Theme music by Max Savage

Benny Walker joined us from his home in Echuca Moama, along the Murray River. His new album, Chosen Line, explores a range of different themes, most notably on the title track. And while Benny was presented with four choices in the By The Glass pop-quiz, perhaps it was destiny that saw him select one he wasn't as confident in. But, as you'll find out, he embraced the challenge. Theme music by Max Savage.

As far as surprises go, we haven't had a bigger one on By The Glass to date. Alice Fraser is the production coordinator for Tame Impala, and tour manager for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Arguably two of Australia's hottest bands right now. But the surprise we refer to is not in regards to her pop quiz performance, although it was definitely surprising, but rather her secondary and perhaps much cooler secret life - what could it be? Known for his cult-like radio programme, Tower of Song, Henry Wagons has recently been working on what the Australian Parliamentary House Committee would surely deem a 'new religious movement'; Delivered Live. During this episode, Henry recalls growing up with Polish cooking, spreading dinner across three different households and performs well below par in the Pop Quiz. He did not - we repeat - did NOT take the bonus question. *Recorded prior to the latest Covid-19 outbreak in Victoria. Theme music by Max Savage

By The Glass is back for season two. It's been a long time between drinks, and things will be a bit different this time 'round. Having both left Adelaide 12-months ago, Ali is now living in Hobart, while Chips is in Melbourne. The studio professionalism you've come to love from the podcast has been ditched in favour of an unnamed online video conferencing platform, and the guests are different too. We'll be chatting with people in the music industry. Musicians, promoters, tour managers and sound engineers - plus so many more. But, as The Cat Empire once sang, some things have changed, but some things never change, and so we return with the notoriously-tricky, crowd-pleasing pop-quiz. Subscribe today! Alex Lahey joins us from a bedroom-turned-studio at her Mum's house in Melbourne. Had things panned out differently this year, she would be in the midst of playing to fans around the world. Instead, she's recording music in the home she grew up in. The result is the aptly-named EP Between the Kitchen and the Living Room. During this episode, Alex shares her experience growing up with a Greek-Egyptian heritage, tells us where to find the best falafel in Melbourne and performs admirably in the pop-quiz (in the sense that she now owes us a beer). Cheers, Alex! Theme music by Max Savage

The podcast is growing. So we decided to take it to the next level by hosting our first ever live event - in San Francisco - where we hosted Oakland's charismatic mayor Libby Schaaf. We were nervous that we'd screw up somehow and forget to hit the 'record' button, but thankfully the conversation is intact. Mayor Schaaf is a great, great interview - for longtime listeners - or first-time listeners - this episode is a great place to start on our podcast. We cover a lot of ground - including homelessness, the 2020 Presidential Race, Sports, and more. We spoke to Mayor Schaaf about her view of the 2020 race, and which candidate she's supporting. We speculate on which tech CEOs may be considering a 2020 run, and spend some time talking about both sides of Prop C (Mayor Schaaf weighs in on the Jack vs. Benioff debate). We talk extensively about the growing homeless problem in San Francisco, and what Oakland is doing to address the issue. We talk to Mayor Schaaf about the recent Oakland Teachers' strike and the numerous strikes that occurred around the country. What does the future hold in terms of country-wide strikes? How can the issue of underpaid teachers be solved? We ask the Mayor about this and more. Of course, we talk sports - the Warriors, the Raiders (cough) and the A's. What does the future of professional sports look like in Oakland, and what's the Mayor's view of each team? We get very candid takes from the Mayor on each of the teams. We try to convince Mayor Schaaf to share her favorite two Oakland restaurants, and we find some compromise. The event was hosted at The Battery in San Francisco. Special thanks to El Sur Restaurant, Erica Terry Derryck, Carissa Torres-Cruz, Tyler Hafer, Max Savage, Marianne Despres, Colleen Curlin, Stacy Horne, The Battery and others for supporting this episode.
