Razib Khan: Anatolia over 10,000 years

On this episode of the Unsupervised Learning podcast, Razib discusses the history and genetics of Anatolia, from the first farmers to the Ottoman conquest of the peninsula. He focuses on the underappreciated reality that prehistoric Anatolia was the font of the first wave of farmers that built the majestic Neolithic societies of Europe, from arid Iberia north to the shores of the Baltic. These people left the vast stoneworks that dot Europe's Atlantic coasts to this day, beginning with the megaliths of Brittany and culminating in the enigmatic site of Stonehenge. Razib also points out the role of Anatolia in the emergence of historical states, like the nearly forgotten ancient empire of the Hittites, plus the storied Byzantines, who held the armies of Islam at bay for nearly 1,000 years. Finally, he addresses the ethnogenesis of the Turkish-speaking population in Anatolia and its transformation from the eastern frontier of Greek speech to the western edge of the Turkic world.

In the thriving urban economies of late thirteenth-century Catalonia, Jewish and Christian women labored to support their families and their communities. The Fruit of Her Hands: Jewish and Christian Women's Work in Medieval Catalan Cities (Penn State Press, 2022) examines how gender, socioeconomic status, and religious identity shaped how these women lived and worked. Sarah Ifft Decker draws on thousands of notarial contracts as well as legal codes, urban ordinances, and Hebrew responsa literature to explore the lived experiences of Jewish and Christian women in the cities of Barcelona, Girona, and Vic between 1250 and 1350. Relying on an expanded definition of women's work that includes the management of household resources as well as wage labor and artisanal production, this study highlights the crucial contributions women made both to their families and to urban economies. Christian women, Ifft Decker finds, were deeply embedded in urban economic life in ways that challenge traditional dichotomies between women in northern and Mediterranean Europe. And while Jewish women typically played a less active role than their Christian counterparts, Ifft Decker shows how, in moments of communal change and crisis, they could and did assume prominent roles in urban economies. Through its attention to the distinct experiences of Jewish and Christian women, The Fruit of Her Hands advances our understanding of Jewish acculturation in the Iberian Peninsula and the shared experiences of women of different faiths. It will be welcomed by specialists in gender studies and religious studies as well as students and scholars of medieval Iberia. Triple Point Brewing founder Alex Barlow joins Harry Duke and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. Alex has been a judge with Herlinda at some international beer competitions. One of his beers won at the Portuguese competition where Herlinda was a judge earlier this year. Triple Point Brewing is still fairly young. It is the successor to another brewery which didn't make the cut financially but which was successful otherwise, including a good location and good partners. Alex also ran a beer sommelier school in England. He worked for Bass for 18 years and did consulting for 14 years doing beer education and training. Herlinda and Alex were in the middle of judging a beer competition together when the news of Queen Elizabeth II's passing reached them. He says it felt strange to be away when it happened and they all shared a toast to her memory. Triple Point Brewing is located in Sheffield, which has a population of 660,000, 20 breweries and a student population of about 60,000. It is surrounded by countryside and there is cycling and climbing all around Sheffield, in Yorkshire. They focus on Lagers and the new style hoppy pales. Alex also likes the west coast pale ales and IPAs so they make some of those too. Their biggest selling beer is the Hellas Lager. They have a Fest Beer ready for Octoberfest, with Bavarian hops. He compares it to toast with marmalade on it. Anyone could enter at the Iberian Beer Awards, and he did enter and win, but with a different brew. Herlinda has opened a Grape Ale from Dos Corvos in Portugal. This is the style that won in Iberia, but the brewery is from Poland, which was surprising. Alex likes being able to make good tasting beer by experimenting with ingredients. There are three different ways to make Grape Ale. One is aging beer in wine casks, which is fairly common. More recently people use wine must and age beer on that. Otherwise, they mix grape juice with the beer wort and then ferment them together. That third one is Herlinda's favorite way. You can combine those techniques too.

Inilah Risalah Jika Spanyol Jadi Negara Islam!

Donielle Watkins, Co-Director of the D.R.E.A.M.S. Foundation of Acadiana, joins us to discuss her passion for helping individuals with special needs have access to fun and enriching activities.   Donielle and her husband, Brian, founded D.R.E.A.M.S. in 2008, so that their son, Logan, who was born with spina bifida, could participate in activities and sports along with other kids with special needs. "DREAMS began when we were sitting at a baseball game one day and Logan looked over at us and asked, 'When am I going to get to play?' It stopped us in our tracks." Logan Watkins was the inspiration behind the DREAMS Foundation of Acadiana. His indomitable spirit is a source of joy for all who know him. There were no organized sports activities of any kind for children with special needs. Donielle found a program that had had some success up North and established a Little League with fifty kids with special needs. After the ball game was over, Logan looked at his mom and asked, "When does basketball start?" Logan just wanted to be like every other kid. The acronym, D.R.E.A.M.S., stands for Disability, Resources, Education, Activities, Management, and Services. DREAMS is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit serving 700 kids in Lafayette, Vermilion, Iberia, and St. Martin Parishes. Participants enjoy year-round activities such as basketball, softball, soccer, bowling, gardening, cheer, dance, music therapy, swimming, art, theater, and fitness classes. It boggled Donielle's mind how fast DREAMS grew. Many volunteers stepped up to offer arts, gardening, and sports activities. Individuals such as Damon Vincent of TrainUnique have even gone on to open a professional gym for people with special needs and provide for his family. DREAMS welcomes all and has participants from five years of age to 60 years of age, with many having Downs syndrome, autism, or cerebral palsy. "When you have a child with special needs, you accept certain things. He'll never play football. You accept that it's a new way of life. But who doesn't accept it? Little Logan. When we were sitting at a baseball game one day and he looked over at us and asked, 'When am I going to play?' it stopped us in our tracks." With a small budget, Donielle works hard to spread the word of DREAMS' work. Many people who would benefit don't know DREAMS exists. The 2010 Census indicated that 12,000 individuals in Lafayette parish would benefit from this service. The need is great and there is much work to be done. With a full-time job as an accountant, Donielle Watkins spends all of her spare time working to grow the reach of DREAMS. Her husband and Co-Director of DREAMS, Brian, is a special education teacher at St. Thomas More high school in the Options program; In 2014, Brian was awarded Teacher of the Year by the Louisiana Governor's Office for Special Needs. D.R.E.A.M.S. Manufacturing Company has recently been established to create jobs for individuals with special needs in the Lafayette community. This work was jump-started by a $25,000 grant from the La. Department of Revenue and a donation of $5,000 to pay for wrapping the food truck. Currently staffed by 21 employees with unique needs, they manufacture ten different types of Kane River Meat Pies that are baked and sold at 12 grocers across Acadiana. At special events where they bring the food truck, you can purchase 2 stuffed pies and chips for $10.00 Donielle loves to bring the meat pies to businesses and will pre-contract with businesses that have 50 or more employees to bring the truck for lunches. "Eventually we'll be the Subway of meat pies," Donielle says. With tempting offerings such as boudin & cheese, spicy Mediterranean beef, and chicken alfredo, she may just be right! Donielle's long-term goal is to build Unity Village Community, a safe, independent living space for people 18 years old and up with special needs. She has worked on this for years and of course,

Retired Federal Judge Richard "Dicky" Haik, Sr. joined Discover Lafayette to discuss his distinguished career in law after serving on the bench for 32 years. Judge Haik grew up in New Iberia and proudly went to Catholic High of New Iberia along with other notables who have followed him, including retired Sheriff Mike Neustrom and UL-Lafayette's current football coach, Michael Desormeaux. He reflected on his admiration of the late Coach Bobby Banna who "was not only a coach but a teacher of life." Haik played football on scholarship at USL and after graduation in general business in 1972, went on to graduate from Loyola Law School in 1975 following in the footsteps of his older brother, Ted Haik. Judge Haik served in the Louisiana Army National Guard obtaining the rank of Captain and company commander for his unit. He served as a Captain in the US Army Reserves from 1980 to 1983. In 1984 at the age of 34, Judge Haik was elected as a state court judge (without opposition!) for the 16th Judicial District, covering Iberia, St. Martin, and St. Mary Parishes. In state court, his caseload included family and custody issues, as well as criminal sentencing, which was personally difficult for him to rule on and led to many sleepless nights. But that is part of the job, and he followed his dad's advice from childhood to "Listen to everyone's advice and do what you think is right." In 1991 at the age of 40, Judge Richard "Dicky" Haik was nominated by Pres. George H. W. Bush to serve on the federal bench for the U. S. District Court, Western District of Louisiana, where he served as chief judge of the court from 2002 to 2009. The Federal Court is a much stricter court system than state courts, and Haik says to young attorneys: "If you haven't tried a case in federal court, it's advisable to get counsel from someone who has before you try your case." He's been blessed with 42 talented law clerks and said five or six of his former clerks have gone on to serve as judges. Haik had a few high-profile cases including the Lafayette Parish Public School System's desegregation case where he ruled on April 24, 2006, that after 41 years, the school system was free from judicial oversight of its operations. "I did what I thought was right." There was also an unfortunate incident that happened not long after he was appointed to the federal bench. He was approached with an offer to make $2 million in exchange for ruling a certain way on a case worth much more than that. Speaking of this dark and scary time in his life, Haik says, "The fellow didn't know me that well." He went to the FBI and U. S. Attorney and personally assisted investigators in gathering evidence to obtain federal indictments against the individuals involved. "They wired up my camp at Cypremort Point with cameras and tape recorders, which went on for several months." Haik had around-the-clock guards to ensure his safety until the suspects were arrested. Two of the three went to jail. "I've also enjoyed good cases tried by good lawyers. The bottom line is I always enjoyed being on the bench. Federal court is more formal, very seldom did we allow people to continue cases, and you knew where you were going in federal court." Dicky Haik pictured with his family. Judge Haik retired in 2016 and now is of counsel with Morrow, Morrow, Ryan, Bassett & Haik, where he focuses on mediation matters. In that position, he has the pleasure of serving alongside his son, Richard T. Haik, Jr. Haik coaches his grandsons in flag football and is very involved with all of his kids and grandkids. A neighbor lets the team utilize a big, empty lot for team practices during the Spring and Fall. He's learned to be a bit more laid back when dealing with these littlest players as they progress.
