Lots of 2021 fall ball action to talk about including Syracuse vs Ohio State, Virginia taking on Lehigh, Johns Hopkins hosting Hobart and Richmond, High Point and Harvard did battle and much more. Syracuse supposedly took down Ohio State, both both teams looked good. Rumors continue that we'll see Tucker Dordevic get some time at attack for the Orange which many of us have been calling for since last season. Virginia looked excellent as usual and Petey LaSalla scored once again off a face-off draw and stuck yet another incredible goal, back-handed. Kid is the most electric face-off guy to play since Trevor Baptiste, and Baptise hasn't been gone all that long. Asher Nolting looked like a cheat code for High Point per Inside Lacrosse, and Sam King, the freshman from Harvard had himself a day going for somewhere in the area of 5 goals and an assist. King did it all as did Nolting in their game, but looks like Harvard edged High Point by a goal or three. For Hobart, the story was Ryan Archer who IL reported looked like he may have been the best player on the field at times. Anyone familiar with Hobart knows Archer is legit, but they are making it sound like he may have a Ryan Tierney level breakout season. Good luck to that kid, he's the real deal. In 2012, at the same time James was dealing with the loss of his Granny, Haley's Dad unexpectedly went to Heaven. This episode is very real and raw from Haley's perspective, but also filled with the joy and hope that is his legacy… One clear thought she remembered having was “He didn't even get to walk me down the aisle.” She was 32 and single. She heard Jesus say “He's been walking you down the aisle for 32 years”.“Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened” -Dr. SuessPlease Support our Sponsors. In this episode, writers Alex Higley and Willie Fitzgerald join host Catherine Nichols to discuss three short stories by Wright Morris: "The Sound Tape," "The Character of the Lover," and "The Cat in the Picture." Higley, who brought the stories to Lit Century, talks about how he discovered Morris's writing through his photographs and photo-texts. The group also talks about Morris's detached, bemused voice, that sometimes tips over into confusion or joy, and the way his stories cheat the reader of conclusive meaning and leave them in a place of mystery. Alex Higley is the author of the short story collection Cardinal and the novel Old Open. Willie Fitzgerald is currently the Mari Sabusawa Editorial Fellow at American Short Fiction. Michael is joined by Sussan Ley, Federal Minister for the Environment / Member for Farrer NSW, about the arrival of Australia's state of the art Antarctic research vessel, the 160m long RSV Nuyina, which was purpose built for the Australian Antarctic Program.   The most advanced vessel of its kind to be deployed in the Southern Ocean, the newly constructed and commissioned icebreaker left Vlissingen in the Netherlands early September completing its 24,000 kilometre journey to Hobart on the weekend.   “This is a ship capable of breaking through Antarctic sea ice, withstanding 14m seas and temperatures of minus 30 degrees to service our Antarctic stations, while also working as a state of the art floating science platform in her own right,” Minister Ley said.   “The RSV Nuyina will soon be the backbone of the Australian Antarctic Program, able to support voyages of 90 days at a time.”   “It will establish a scientific legacy that will last for generations and today is a huge milestone for climate research, and our study of Antarctic and marine ecosystems.”   The Morrison Government is investing $1.9 billion to cover the design and build of the ship as well as its operation and maintenance over an expected 30-year life span. Ben Davison wraps up the changes to COVID protections around the country as NSW schools are set to reopen, Victoria announces end of lockdown and Hobart seems set to survive a scare unscathed. What's Josh Frydenberg's problem.  The Morrison government Treasurer keeps attacking Victoria, that state he's from, on everything to do with COVID.  Why?  Ben Looks at how Frydenberg's failures on Jobkeeper, Jobmaker, Wages and secure jobs might be driving him to create a distraction. And Morrison has finally decided to go to CoP26 in Glasgow in November after pressure from the opposition, Prince Charles, The Queen (who was attacked in the Herald Sun over it, so much for "mission zero") and comedian Dan Ilic who's billboard campaign has gone from Kooyong and Armadale to Glasgow and Times Square.  WIth emissions targets somewhere around half of the rest of the developed world and the Nationals still demanding an unknown price for policy to get to net zero what will Morrison say when he gets to Glasgow?  Maybe the next two sitting weeks will shed some light.

Long Distance Call

Big news this week: Eliza has a new job! And she's launched a new podcast. She's moving to 'The Squiz' as Content Director. She'll write the Squiz Daily email and co-host the podcast, which is a quick hit of news designed to fit into busy people's morning routine - for the commute, the gym or over a morning coffee. Eliza started as an ABC cadet in the Hobart newsroom in 2007. It's a big & exciting change. Also this week, Eliza's launched 'Reunion: The Podcast'. She was meant to be celebrating her 20 year school reunion with a big party in Sydney. But Delta interupted those plans. So she's joined forces with her friend Grace Brennan to catch up with old school mates. Some loved their time at school, while others felt trapped. Grace and Eliza want to know why; and how school shaped their choices in later life. Geraldine reflects on her podcast 'Plenary Matters' and what it revealed about the state of the Cathoic Church. And why covid will be an era, not a crisis. Thanks for listening! Week 5 was witness to a number of key battles, both inside and outside of the Top 25, and if you're living life in the fast lane, you hopes for making the postseason may be already gone in the long run. One of these nights, you think, someone is going to upset the team you are chasing in the standings, or in the Top 25, and then there's going to be a heartache tonight. That did not happen to Washington & Jefferson, which survived a close game at Geneva and will finally get another home game. Presidents coach Mike Sirianni talks about that and more with us in our Tight Five segment. There's no wasted time when we get the interview down to five minutes. Or perhaps you are exceeding everyone's expectations and you're the new kid in town. That could well be FDU-Florham, which took it too Widener this weekend. There's implications here beyond the MAC standings, however, and if you can trust your lyin' eyes, you can probably have a peaceful, easy feeling about your postseason chances. Saturday night also saw a big game down in Georgia that we'll talk about, and of course, you'd have to think hell freezes over if we don't talk about that big win for Ithaca against Hobart. Meanwhile, it was business as usual for Central against Wartburg -- 2021 style, anyway. Perhaps not 2019 style. Plus, who really are the best dual-threat quarterbacks in Division III? You are not alone if you think it's your quarterback, so we'll give you a few more names because your program may not be the center of the universe. What have been the most impactful plays of the season so far? Which two teams should play for the Twilight Trophy? That and much more in episode 288. We discover the world of an incredible artist JESSE MURRY who passed away in 1993 leaving an extraordinary legacy of artwork, poetry and writing. Fusing the Romantic painting tradition of John Constable and J. M. W. Turner with the quality of mind and imagination of Wallace Stevens's poetry, Murry uniquely sought to create a “landscape” within the fiction of painting that could be “more than a place to dwell but a suitable space for dreams.”We meet two special guests this week to remember Murry's artwork and to explore his extraordinary thinking - the artists #LisaYuskavage @LisaYuskavageStudio and @JarrettEarnest - who together have united to curate an extraordinary new exhibition titled ‘Jesse Murry: Rising', curated by Lisa Yuskavage and Jarrett Earnest, at #DavidZwirner's 533 West 19th Street location in New York.Painter and poet #JesseMurry (1948–1993) identified three significant approaches to landscape—'poetic,' 'dramatic,' and 'visionary,' which he aimed to synthesize into abstract paintings. Born in North Carolina, Jesse Murry studied art and philosophy at Sarah Lawrence College before moving to New York City in 1979. His essays on artists including Hans Hofmann and Howard Hodgkin appeared in a range of publications, including Arts Magazine. After two years of teaching art history and exhibiting at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Murry enrolled in the Yale School of Art at the age of thirty-six. ‘Jesse Murry: Rising' brings together paintings from the last five years of the artist's life. This work—made while confronting his impending mortality from AIDS-related illness—testifies to Murry's lifelong belief in the capacity of painting to hold the complexity of human meaning, at the meeting of a material fact and a location within the mind. Exhibition runs from 17 SEPTEMBER – 23 OCTOBER 2021. Learn more: https://www.davidzwirner.com/exhibitions/2021/more-life/jesse-murryForthcoming on September 28, 2021, and titled after a paper the artist wrote while at Yale, Painting Is a Supreme Fiction is an unprecedented collection of Murry's writings. Edited and with an introduction by Jarrett Earnest and a foreword by Hilton Als, the book also includes transcriptions of two of the artist's notebooks, in which the spatialization of the words across the page approaches the condition of thought.
