In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with author Greg Rhyno about his new mystery novel, Who By Water (Cormorant Books, 2025). After barely surviving her last case, Dame Polara trades her part-time detective gig for the safer — though no less chaotic — life of a single, working mother, picking up toys instead of picking locks, chasing after her two-year-old instead of chasing crooks. But when her ex-husband inexplicably drowns, and Dame becomes the prime suspect in his murder investigation, she must work alongside the woman who ruined her marriage to unravel the mystery of the man they both loved. Dame's sleuthing takes her to dive bars, industrial ports, and eventually, Toronto Island, where her ex spent his final days with a community of secretive and temperamental artists. As she comes closer to the complicated truth, Dame realizes that in order to clear her name and protect her family, she'll have to re-examine everything she thought she knew about the people she loved and left behind. About Greg Rhyno: Greg Rhyno is the author of Who by Fire, first of the Dame Polara Mysteries, and To Me You Seem Giant, which was nominated for a ReLit Award and an Alberta Book Publishing Award. His writing has appeared in a number of journals, including Hobart, Riddle Fence, The Quarantine Review, and PRISM International. He completed an MFA at the University of Guelph and lives with his family in Guelph, Ontario. Learn more about your ad choices. Join me on the second segment of my ecotourism trip to Tasmania, Australia (my unscientific, amateur, American, vegan, wombat-obsessed perspective) with all my own audio recordings from my June 2025 trip. This 58-minute (part 2) segment of the trip takes you along with me to my favorite part -- Maria Island National Park and its wombats, kangaroos and wallabies, stingrays, and ruby red anemones, and the culling issue of marsupial "overpopulation" -- through to Port Arthur Historic Convict Site, then on to the city of Hobart, with insights from my Conference on Communication and Environment #COCE2025 (at Univ of Tasmania), including compelling audio clips from Tassie Green Party pioneers who spoke to us -- Bob Brown and Christine Milne. As retired Members of Parliament, and forest/river and gender activists, Christine and Bob have refreshingly candid political advice for activists that also gives listeners insights into current Australian politics. Plus you get to hear their cool Aussie accents (much better than my one attempt early on to do an Aussie accent). "Bad Weather" pronounced "Beed Weeth-uh." (side note: I loved the cool weather there in their winter and the sunny days on the coast). If you like my ecotourist ramblings and low-tech audio, make sure you've listened to Tassie podcast part 1 in the previous podcast posting. And see photos and videos from my trip at https://www.facebook.com/InTunetoNature Idea: You can do a drinking game every time I talk about wombat poop, the ferry, and how adorable any marsupial is. Note: All the animal audio and photos here are of free-living/wild animals (no one was captive in a zoo or sanctuary), which did limit the number of other animal species I interacted with (no Tasmanian Devils or platypuses this time), but I felt it was a more natural and respectful way to interact (it was the animal individual's choice to get near me or allow me nearer to them). And I had an amazing time, and was elated for every wild animal I saw (like fairy wrens or swamp hens at outdoor bistro tables eating my chia pudding cup). As part of me compensating for the greenhouse gas emitted from my international trip, I made some donations to the Tasmanian Land Conservancy and the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania and the Friends of Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. I'm so excited to share my three-week ecotourism trip through Tasmania, Australia. This 50-minute podcast is the first of a multi-part podcast series I created from the audio that I took along my June 2025 trip (and you can pair that with the gorgeous photos I posted on https://www.facebook.com/InTunetoNature ) to get a feel for this extraordinary place, and its animals, like wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, seals, whales, sheep, cows, and birds like cockatoos, forest ravens, magpies, wrens, and kookaburras. Often I'm adding in my own audio commentary and context as an American traveler and animal and environmental advocate, but other times I'm just quietly recording the voices and sounds around me, particularly the other animals there. Across the full series exploring Tasmania (or lutruwita, as the Aborignal Palawa people have called their homeland for 40,000 years), the itinerary I'll take you on is first a quick visit to Melbourne on the front end of the trip (hello city Cockatoo), and then we spend a week traveling through Northern and Eastern Tasmania, starting at beautiful Dove Lake in Cradle Mountain National Park (where I see my first wombats), through the second largest city, Launceston, and the wine and agricultural region, over to the East Coast to the iconic wineglass bay in Freycinet National Park (this is Part 1). And then in future podcasts, I take the ferry to Maria Island (with so many wild animals, including kangaroos) and Port Arthur historic convict site, then South, over to the largest city, Hobart, for a week for my participation in the Conference on Communication and Environment at Univ of Tasmania, and a post-conference on Deep Ecology with esteemed activist John Seed (and we also get to meet two of their biggest environmental activists who started the Green Party in Australia, Christine Milne and Bob Brown). Then before flying out of Melbourne, on the mainland of Australia, I share my tour of the Great Ocean Road where I got to see my first wild koalas up in the eucalyptus trees, and a kookaburra, black and white magpies, and kangaroos at their gorgeous national parks. Note: all the animal audio and photos here are of wild/free-living animals (no one was captive in a zoo or sanctuary), which did limit the number of other animal species I interacted with (no Tasmanian Devils or platypuses this time), but I felt it was a more natural and respectful way to interact (it was the animal individual's choice to get near me or allow me nearer to them). And I had an amazing time, and was elated for every wild animal I saw (even wrens or swamp hens at outdoor bistro tables), plus I enjoyed the human Aussies I met as well. Love their accents! As part of my compensation for the resources used and greenhouse gas emitted from my international trip, I made some donations to the Tasmanian Land Conservancy and the Aboriginal Land Council of Tasmania and the Friends of Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. This week Nicola and Di chat with the brilliant journalist, broadcaster and presenter Kumi Taguchi. Kumi has been working in the Australian media for almost 30 years, since she landed her first job as a Production Assistant for the 7.30 Report in the 90s. From there she went on to become the host and presenter of many shows, including her current role as the host of the SBS show, Insight. Kumi can now add author to her title, with the release of her book: The Good Daughter: A memoir of losing my father and finding home. We chat to Kumi about some of the powerful and emotional moments that she shares in her new memoir, The Good Daughter. Kumi talks to us about the estranged relationship she had with her father and the unbelievable moment they shared in Japan when Kumi went to close that chapter in her life, and the universe sent her a glaring sign that it was far from closed. Kumi talks about what it was like growing up as half Japanese and half Australian, and how it was actually her Australian mother that kept the Japanese culture alive in her home. Kumi shares the beautiful moment when a Japanese woman on a train in Tokyo, helped her to reframe how she thinks about her heritage in the most powerful way. We also chat about some of the incredible personal challenges that Kumi has achieved - like that time she ran a marathon in the middle of the desert, or the time she was in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, despite the fact that she had no sailing experience and a history of getting sea sick. And of course, we wanted to hear all the behind-the-scenes intel about what really goes into an episode of Insight, how the show is made, and what Kumi’s favourite shows have been over the years. We had so much fun with Kumi and we could have chatted to her for hours. We loved having her in the studio and we really hope you enjoy this episode. First - Carrie has a downstairs tenant. To be clear - there has been ZERO PRIOR ALLUSION to there even being a dwelling below NYC's new fav romanicy writer's place but all of a sudden, but that hasn't stopped Mattress Pikelet King intro'ing a british flavour to the overboiling pot of plots and characters.Seema's trying to girlboss her way into a new mortgage, Miranda gets threatened by a naked cleaver-weilding man forcing her to move in with Carrie and immediately becoming the worst house mate anyone's ever had, Harry has the big C, and there is a ghoulish invocation of Samantha's existence via SMS text message. Put simply - we are running out of benchspace and elements to place all of these pots and pans. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

One of the most anticipated new golf course developments is 7 Mile Beach in Hobart, and Tour Pro Matty Goggin is the man behind it. Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen gave Matty a buzz in Colorado, where he is preparing to play the US Senior Open this weekend, to ask him about the Hobart course.Mark has seen some photos, and says they are amazing. Matty explains that he was unsure as to whether they'd get water views, but as it turns out, you have water vista's almost everywhere. He describes7 Mile Beach as a 'classic links course'.He tells us where the course is currently at, in 'preview play' at the moment, and 18 holes will be operational by the end of 2025. And he explains why it will be a public access course, perhaps with a membership structure in tandem. And his desire for it to be a Top 100 course in the world. As you'd imagine, plenty of bureaucracy to navigate, which Matty understands but says it has been frustrating at times, but nothing moreso than the 'political football' that is the AFL stadium. He tells Nick and Mark that he 'can't think of another business that would have more impact in the history of Tasmania than an AFL club', and that the business model just works and everyone in Tassie should be on board. He comments that some people in Tassie have a 'bare minimum' attitude to doing things, which is unhelpful.A fantastic chat with Matty Goggin, and we're excited to see 7 Mile Beach when it's done! We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. David Ost, professor of politics and Hobart and William Smith, joins Suzi to unpack Poland's June 1 presidential election. The race was tight, but in the end, Karol Nawrocki, the far-right, hardline nationalist with MAGA-style politics and Trump's backing, narrowly defeated Warsaw's liberal mayor Rafał Trzaskowski. After voters rejected Trumpist candidates in recent elections in Canada, Australia and Romania, Polish voters went the other way, swinging back to the hard right just two years after electing liberal leader Donald Tusk. What does this election reveal about the continuing attraction of the authoritarian and nationalist right to working class voters? Ost argues that Tusk in power promised a program of radical changes, but delivered too little, dampening enthusiasm and turnout, echoing the troubles of Biden and Harris in the US. There was also the liberal-left campaign which focused on Nawrocki's negative personal qualities, including criticism of his tough working class background, rather than his reactionary, xenophobic, chauvinist agenda — missteps that fed class resentment and fueled the far right. Populism has shown to have staying power, and center-left governance has failed to offer a durable counter. Is Poland a warning to liberal democrats everywhere? What are the implications for Ukraine, Europe and the globe? Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements.
