I believe that, no matter how old we are, we never stop trying to secure the approval of one or both of our parents. While my twin brother was always searching for our father's affections, I was always trying to vie for my mother's approval in everything I did. Today's guest, Brian O'Hare can relate. Imagine having a larger than life character as a father—someone who casts so wide a shadow, you might lose yourself in it. Well, that's where Brian's story begins! Meet Brian O'Hare: Brian  is a graduate of the US Naval Academy and former US Marine Corps officer. His storytelling career began in a Baltimore bar, the legendary Club Charles, where director John Waters cast him to appear in his film Cry Baby. Currently, Brian an award-winning writer and filmmaker living in Los Angeles. His work has appeared in War, Literature and the Arts; Santa Fe Writers Project; Hobart; and other journals, and he has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes. He was named a Writing Fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and recently served as Visiting Writer at CUNY/Kingsborough. He joined me on Uncorking a Story to discuss his career and new book, Surrender.  Key Topics: Feeling as if we have to constantly search for the approval of a parent. The danger of denying parts of self to appease another person. How writing Surrender was Brian's way of breaking the cycle of constantly searching for approval in his life for his own benefit and for the benefit of his children. Why, in Brian's case, the notion of surrender ironically equates to freedom. Giving People More Choices for Long-term Healthcare in the Middle Market (w/Tom Beauregard, Founder & CEO at HCG Secure)

Tom Beauregard is the Founder and CEO of HCG Secure, a product and solution builder transforming the aging at-home experience. HSG produces alternatives to long-term care solutions for middle income families who retire, do not have long-term care and will not qualify for Medicare. Many people in this category may have adequate income but do not understand that Medicare does not cover their long-term care, and 70% of people face larger-than planned healthcare expenditures that are the leading cause of bankruptcy of people over age 75. HCG is licensed in 50 States and is selling through brokerages who sell to the pre-65 population with an average buyer aged 60. HCG now has 15+ larger brokers as partners, who have confirmed this industry coverage gap.  Tom was inspired to found HCG Secure when his parents reached an age where they were unable to fully care for themselves but wished to age at home. Limited by geography and his parents' need for local resources, he found the process both overwhelming and difficult for him to ensure that his parents were receiving the best possible care from afar. Stunned by the lack of coverage resulting in out-of-pocket expenses and the lack of resources, Tom made it his mission to create products that offer the network and coverage needed for individuals and their loved ones to age comfortably, and as they wish.  With over 30 years of innovation experience across healthcare, public policy, academia, and non-profit organizations, Tom's career has centered around building disruptive solutions to problems he has personally encountered and identified within the healthcare space. Tom was the former Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer of UnitedHealth Group, where he oversaw the R&D department for both UnitedHealth and Optum. He brought over 100 R&D initiatives to market across various innovation categories, including value-based payment models, digital health, consumer engagement, and home-based care models.  Tom graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and the University of Connecticut with a Masters in Business Administration. He also received an Emmy for his work with the National Diabetes Prevention Program in partnership with the Y-USA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Project NOT ME, where he was the Executive Producer.  Follow the Insurtech Leadership Podcast airing weekly hosted by Joshua R. Meghan is a veteran of the literary world and it turns out it's her job to educate Sarah about how things work. They discuss the phenomenon of “white Brooklyn ladies of the publishing business,” as coined by the writer Alex Perez, a Cuban American writer and Iowa Writers Workshop alum who is Sick Of The Wokeness™. Meghan talks about her own experience in an MFA program, her bouts of self-loathing about it in recent years and the vagaries of the literary “community”. They then move on to the lighter topic of assisted suicide and consider the ways in which Canadian programs for the benefit of the terminally ill might actually be a slippery slope. Meghan deathsplains to Sarah about the phenomenon of death cafes and death doulas. (She's a fan!). In the subscriber-only BONUS content, Sarah reveals the truth behind her affinity for taking Twitter polls. (Spoiler: it's not feminist). The ladies then return to one of their favorite questions: why do so many otherwise smart people go along with idiotic nonsense? Are Sarah and Meghan smarter than everyone else? Let's fix that!Nancy and Sarah have fallen hard for documentary filmmaker Meg Smaker after her recent appearance on Sam Harris' podcast. Smaker's film, originally titled Jihad Rehab (now called The UnRedacted), was canceled before it was ever released, having met a perfect storm of identity politics, institutional cowardice, and social media pile-on. But what we see in Smaker is a champion of radical empathy. She's also a bad-ass, a former firefighter who cusses like a Marine and describes herself as a “six-foot albino godzilla.” Our kinda woman. Our friend Meghan Daum, of The Unspeakable and A Special Place in Hell podcasts, brought our attention to the dust-up at Hobart literary journal, where Cuban-born writer Alex Perez gave an interview filled with the spot-on observations everyone knows but no one talks about (Sarah calls them “truth clicks”) and which — surprise! — led to five editors quitting. A new site called Semafor drops some truth bombs about tensions at The New York Times, including an exchange with a former editor that gave Nancy a mental orgasm. What would socialism look like in the United States—the richest country ever known yet 38 million people are hungry? Socialism would use that wealth and our development for the needs of the people, stop endless wars, and crush racism, sexism, and all forms of bigotry. A new book, "Socialist Reconstruction: A Better Future for the United States," demonstrates what this could look like in detail, starting in “the first decade of socialism in the United States." Brian is joined by Dr. Jodi Dean, Professor of Political Science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges & author of several books. She and Brian were part of the collective effort to produce the just-released book “Socialist Reconstruction: A Better Future for the United States." The World Cup is finally here and TGC kicks it off with possibly the loosest show since the last World Cup. Who are the favourites? Is Che La Luna the song of the summer? Will Warner ever captain again? Can Western Australia go all the way after their win over India? What's New Zealand up to? Bharat Sundaresan makes his TGC debut from a seedy hotel in Hobart to give us his insights into his net-relationship with Steve Smith and Reece Topley lets us know of his love affair with Australia, mullets, taking 6/24 at Lord's and the low-down on his current Uber rating. #AskTGC takes us into the urinals at Manuka Oval in the nation's capital and also when sledging a kid's dead dad goes wrong.
