Yemen is a country that gets little attention despite being at the centre of one of the greatest humanitarian crises in the world, as declared by the UNHCR in 2025. There is not space enough here to describe all the events that have led to such a crisis, including civil war, an overthrow of the government and in 2015 a Saudi-led mass bombing of the country, but the results have seen a catastrophic collapse in living standards, large-scale hunger and instability. In other words, not the kind of environment parents would want their children to grow up in. This was the view of Khaled's parents in 2015, as missiles rained down in their neighbourhood, destroying many buildings around them, and this was the first step to Khaled coming to Tasmania.Coming to Hobart to study a Business and Finance degree, Khaled could scarcely have come to a more contrasting environment. A place that was peaceful and quiet, even a bit too quiet, and it took Khaled a while also to adjust to western culture. Despite this, he has truly made a lot of his opportunity to develop his skills, creative pursuits and character.Of course, it goes without saying, that the situation in Yemen is still very unstable, and in this episode, Khaled speaks of the fears for family still living back home.

This ep is proudly partnered with One Percent Collective, learn more and support great NZ charities at opc.nz/twioat Guy's in Hobart, Tim's in Wellington, we're all in audio quality hell - get over it!This episode is an often-times confusing mix of revelations, giving the feeling of an Olympic athlete from the 1980s who only discovered what event they're competing in next once they've passed the threshold of a prior, unrelated sporting pursuit. First - Carrie has a downstairs tenant. To be clear - there has been ZERO PRIOR ALLUSION to there even being a dwelling below NYC's new fav romanicy writer's place but all of a sudden, but that hasn't stopped Mattress Pikelet King intro'ing a british flavour to the overboiling pot of plots and characters.Seema's trying to girlboss her way into a new mortgage, Miranda gets threatened by a naked cleaver-weilding man forcing her to move in with Carrie and immediately becoming the worst house mate anyone's ever had, Harry has the big C, and there is a ghoulish invocation of Samantha's existence via SMS text message. Put simply - we are running out of benchspace and elements to place all of these pots and pans. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Talk Birdie To Me

One of the most anticipated new golf course developments is 7 Mile Beach in Hobart, and Tour Pro Matty Goggin is the man behind it. Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen gave Matty a buzz in Colorado, where he is preparing to play the US Senior Open this weekend, to ask him about the Hobart course.Mark has seen some photos, and says they are amazing. Matty explains that he was unsure as to whether they'd get water views, but as it turns out, you have water vista's almost everywhere. He describes7 Mile Beach as a 'classic links course'.He tells us where the course is currently at, in 'preview play' at the moment, and 18 holes will be operational by the end of 2025. And he explains why it will be a public access course, perhaps with a membership structure in tandem. And his desire for it to be a Top 100 course in the world. As you'd imagine, plenty of bureaucracy to navigate, which Matty understands but says it has been frustrating at times, but nothing moreso than the 'political football' that is the AFL stadium. He tells Nick and Mark that he 'can't think of another business that would have more impact in the history of Tasmania than an AFL club', and that the business model just works and everyone in Tassie should be on board. He comments that some people in Tassie have a 'bare minimum' attitude to doing things, which is unhelpful.A fantastic chat with Matty Goggin, and we're excited to see 7 Mile Beach when it's done! We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. David Ost, professor of politics and Hobart and William Smith, joins Suzi to unpack Poland's June 1 presidential election. The race was tight, but in the end, Karol Nawrocki, the far-right, hardline nationalist with MAGA-style politics and Trump's backing, narrowly defeated Warsaw's liberal mayor Rafał Trzaskowski. After voters rejected Trumpist candidates in recent elections in Canada, Australia and Romania, Polish voters went the other way, swinging back to the hard right just two years after electing liberal leader Donald Tusk. What does this election reveal about the continuing attraction of the authoritarian and nationalist right to working class voters? Ost argues that Tusk in power promised a program of radical changes, but delivered too little, dampening enthusiasm and turnout, echoing the troubles of Biden and Harris in the US. There was also the liberal-left campaign which focused on Nawrocki's negative personal qualities, including criticism of his tough working class background, rather than his reactionary, xenophobic, chauvinist agenda — missteps that fed class resentment and fueled the far right. Populism has shown to have staying power, and center-left governance has failed to offer a durable counter. Is Poland a warning to liberal democrats everywhere? What are the implications for Ukraine, Europe and the globe? Jacobin Radio with Suzi Weissman features conversations with leading thinkers and activists, with a focus on labor, the economy, and protest movements.

When Bob Chappell vanished from his yacht in Hobart, suspicion quickly turned on his partner, Sue Neill-Fraser, an unassuming woman who soon found herself at the centre of one of Australia’s most controversial murder cases. But behind the headlines lies a deeper story - one of forensic failure, investigative tunnel vision, and a conviction that may never have happened if all the available avenues had been investigated. In this episode, former detective Colin McLaren unpacks the crucial DNA evidence, the overlooked clues on the yacht, and the questions raised by a mysterious yellow Ford. This is a story about how forensics should work, and what happens when it doesn’t. Note: Sue Neill-Fraser was found guilty by a Supreme Court jury; her appeal was dismissed, and a Coroner’s investigation, which reviewed all the available evidence, supported the findings of the criminal proceedings. Tasmania Police stand by the integrity and thoroughness of the investigation, and the efforts of the investigation team, including the forensic experts, and the prosecution of the case by the office of the DPP.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Reportage International

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2025 2:34

Despite careful planning, unforeseen issues can arise that test resilience and patience. He highlights that growth is a long-term journey requiring adaptability and the ability to navigate uncertainty.  What's your favorite business book that has helped you the most? Jay Patey mentioned that the business book which helped him the most was "2 Second Lean" by Paul Akers. He appreciated its focus on improving workflow efficiency, organization, and lean manufacturing principles—particularly relevant as he set up their new bakery production space to be streamlined and future-proofed. He mentioned that he listens to it religiously and finds it insightful for learning from other business owners' growth journeys and challenges. What tool or resource would you recommend to grow a small business? Jay Patey recommends using subscription-based software tools to grow a small business, particularly those that streamline operations. These tools have helped improve efficiency and reduce administrative overhead What advice would you give yourself on day one of starting out in business? Jay Patey would advise himself on day one to “strap in for the ride” and recognize that he had no real idea of what lay ahead. He reflects that he was quite naïve at the start and never imagined the business would grow as much as it has, emphasizing the importance of being mentally prepared for a long, challenging, and evolving journey.
