Hey Talkhouse listeners, this week, I'm throwing you a rerun from a while back, but whose wisdom hasn't dimmed since 2018 when it was recorded. It's a great conversation between Steve Albini and Devo's Jerry Casale that was captured backstage at the Desert Days Festival. I grabbed this one from the archive because we recently passed the 2nd anniversary of Albini's untimely death, and there was a great Rolling Stone piece about his legacy that got me thinking. He was a very smart, sometimes controversial guy, always opinionated, but always thoughtful. Check it out and we'll see you with a new episode next week. —Josh Modell, Host of the Talkhouse Podcast The Talkhouse Podcast recently headed out to the fantastic Desert Daze festival at Moreno Beach at Lake Perris in Southern California. When we weren't catching sets by Tame Impala, King Gizzard, and My Bloody Valentine, we recorded a trio of great talks; this week, we present the first. When I saw that both Steve Albini and Devo's Jerry Casale were going to be at Desert Daze giving talks, I knew we had to pair these two icons of alternative music. They're big fans of each other's work, and halfway through their conversation, Steve said, “This is the sort of stuff no one ever talks about. These are the questions I've had for 30 years.” Their fascinating talk takes in the beginning years of Devo's existence; their complex relationship with Neil Young; Brian Eno's proclivity for ménage à trois; the differences between poker and making records; and how the name Devo became a category alongside jocks, squares and nerds. It was co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi. The Talkhouse Podcast's theme song was composed and performed by The Range. Big thanks to Desert Daze for hosting the Talkhouse Podcast. Lip Biter Sounds with FLOYD WEST22 #61 Show: LIP BITER SOUNDS Artist: FLOYD WEST22 Air Date: 21 May 2026 Genre: House / Techno / Melodic House / Bass House Episode 61 of Lip Biter Sounds pulls together tech house, electro, indie dance, melodic techno, and warehouse rave energy into one restless late-night ride. FLOYD WEST22 moves between hypnotic grooves, acid pressure, dark synth work, and emotional club moments without ever staying in one lane for too long. From gritty underground rollers to cinematic melodic tension, the mix constantly shifts between seductive and chaotic. By the final stretch, it feels like pure after-hours delirium—red lights, distorted basslines, sweat, and sunrise energy. Episode 61 pushes Lip Biter Sounds deeper into the underground while showing FLOYD WEST22's genre-bending style at full force.

Linktree: https://linktr.ee/AnalyticJoin The Normandy For Additional Bonus Audio And Visual Content For All Things Nme+! Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KIn this segment of Notorious Mass Effect, Analytic Dreamz explores the artist background of Tame Impala, the psychedelic rock/psych-pop project led by Australian multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker. Since 2008, Parker has written, produced, and performed most material solo under the Tame Impala moniker. The sound evolution traces from garage-psych roots on Innerspeaker (2010), to polished pop-infused textures on Currents (2015), groove/pop hybridization on The Slow Rush (2020), and the latest genre blend of psychedelic, disco, house, and pop on Deadbeat, released October 17, 2025. Deadbeat debuted at #4 on Billboard 200, #4 on Official U.K. Albums Chart, and #2 on ARIA Chart.Tame Impala boasts numerous Grammys, ARIA, APRA Awards, and one BRIT Award, with massive streaming success—e.g., “The Less I Know the Better” exceeding 2.2B Spotify streams—yet waited nearly two decades for a first Hot 100 entry.Focus shifts to standout single “Dracula,” released September 26, 2025, as the third from Deadbeat. This third single delivers a bouncy, disco-leaning groove with a “party-until-dawn” narrative using vampire metaphors for nightlife embrace. Praised for its infectious groove, earworm chorus, and Halloween-adjacent energy, it drew mixed reviews (e.g., Medium 6.5/10) but strong community response in outlets like Atwood Magazine.“Dracula” marked Tame Impala's breakthrough: first Billboard Hot 100 entry debuting at #55 (October 2025), peaking at #30; #1 on Alternative Airplay (January 2026, returned #1 February 7 chart); #2 Adult Alternative Airplay; #23 Rock & Alternative Airplay. It ranked #3 in Triple J Hottest 100 (2025), amassed ~221M Spotify streams by February 2026, with debut week U.S. metrics of 6.5M streams, 1.7M radio impressions, and 1K digital sales. It peaked Top 40 on UK Singles Chart over 16 weeks. An early February 2026 remix featuring BLACKPINK's JENNIE added new vocal layers, verse content, and lyric nods to Parker, blending K-pop with psych-pop. Released post-Parker's JENNIE merch sighting at the February 1, 2026 Grammys—where Tame Impala won Best Dance/Electronic Recording for “End Of Summer” (second consecutive in category)—the remix boosted visibility, demographic reach, and chart momentum, sparking follow-up Hot 100 entries like “Loser” (#91) and “My Old Ways” (#56).Analytic Dreamz analyzes “Dracula” as a streaming-driven radio crossover, U.S. chart gateway, and cross-genre platform linking psych-pop and K-pop ecosystems, reinforcing Parker's hybrid legacy amid a 2026 European tour (April 4–May 13, covering major markets like Madrid, Paris, Berlin, London, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Dublin).Tune in for in-depth insights on Tame Impala's evolution, breakthrough success, and strategic significance in modern music.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/exclusive-contentPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

And then it's, like, the coolest thing you've ever f***ing heard.Brian and Lizzie dive into the cultural impact and musical complexity of Twenty One Pilots' 2015 masterpiece, Blurryface. They explore the album's guerrilla marketing leak, its consortium of A-list producers, and its lasting influence on the pop landscape. Was Blurryface the biggest record to emerge from the 2010s emo scene? Brian and Lizzie investigate the monumental impact of Twenty One Pilots' 2015 genre-defying album. They discuss the duo's Ohio roots, their place in Fueled by Ramen's emo history, and the album's unique production, which brought together producers from hip hop, pop, and indie rock. The hosts explore the strategic album leak, the creation of the 'Blurryface' character to personify insecurity and mental health struggles, and how the record smuggled alternative art into the mainstream. Featuring in-depth analysis of landmark tracks like the billion-stream hit "Stressed Out," the reggae-infused "Ride," and the fan-favorite "Tear In My Heart," this episode debates whether the album's pop punk adjacency and massive success cement its place as one of the best emo albums of all time. "This is very much a radio sounding record, although the music and the songwriting is not super radio friendly.""By wrapping a high concept album about depression and insecurity in glossy pop production, Twenty One Pilots smuggled alternative art into the mainstream.""I wasn't raised in the hood, but I know a thing or two about pain and darkness. And it's like, I don't think that you need to say that in a rap song."
