Live music is everywhere you look along High Street, the main drag for Melbourne suburbs like Northcote, Brunswick and Thornbury. In fact, it's hard to say if any one street in Australia has more live gigs than this one. The High Street strip is home to iconic venues like Northcote Social Club, Thornbury Theatre, Howler and the Croxton, all universally loved by artists and fans alike. Alex Lahey goes on a journey to discover what makes these venues - and this part of the city - so special when it comes to live music, tapping into artists like Mark Seymour, Henry Wagons, Alice Skye, Mindy Meng Wang, and Kylie Auldist for their thoughts on this thriving and passionate live music hub. Elvis Presley has had a worldwide influence on music, pop culture and fashion, but will future generations continue to be influenced by The King?
Here he is. The mayor of Goodtown. The king at the top of the Tower of Song. The alt-country frontman's alt-country frontman. Better at bingo! Better at chess! He even beat you on the NAPLAN test! That's right folks, Henry fucking Wagons is here. In a Bar Bands first, we're speaking from hundreds of kilometres away - David in Wollongong, Henry in the wild west of Victoria. Don't think for a second that's gonna kill the vibe, though. What we have here is a conversation for the ages - we begin in the suburbs of Melbourne, we end up in a hotel room somewhere in Canada and we talk about just about everything that happened in-between. There's noise collectives! Country bands! Banter about Bob Dylan! What more could you want? Wagons new EP 'Need A Ride?' is out now via Spunk Records. Known for his cult-like radio programme, Tower of Song, Henry Wagons has recently been working on what the Australian Parliamentary House Committee would surely deem a 'new religious movement'; Delivered Live. During this episode, Henry recalls growing up with Polish cooking, spreading dinner across three different households and performs well below par in the Pop Quiz. He did not - we repeat - did NOT take the bonus question. *Recorded prior to the latest Covid-19 outbreak in Victoria. Theme music by Max Savage

Wagons. Songs from the Aftermath. Psychedelic, space cowboy Henry Wagons and his 6-piece band of misfit entertainers are BACK with a dark, sweaty, bludgeoning country rock LP. . 3.5 years ago Henry and I shared a couple of cheeky India Pale Ales in a Holiday Inn Hotel in Hermosa Beach, California, and together we recorded 2 hours of one of my favourite podcast episodes ever. . Our second time around, we wax lyrical on overseas adventures, Vietnam Vespa iPhone thieves, Scrabble dates versus Netflix & Chill, the evolution from writing solo to collaboration in the deepest form from the stages of embryo, his love of Nashville, 5-year old daughter Casper’s RRR artist debut and much, much more. . Podcasting and hanging out with Henry Wagons is an absolute joy! Get some! . They talk classic tracks "Heart of Gold", "Out on the Weekend" and "Old Man" and along the way, discuss the strange international journey of the album's recording, why the album wouldn't have been made the way it was today, why Nashville is such a great place to record, how the album has influenced Henry's own recording process and how he's indoctrinating his offspring with the album. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music.
