Last June Allison and I tried to get something on tape, but tech issues crashed our party ... funny thing, we ended up chatting for over 30 minutes through sketchy wifi on a bunch of topics, some of which popped back up in this episode.   When I started this podcast a year ago I had little idea about the what, the how, or even my why in chasing conversations. I quickly cobbled together a list of questions that I thought an EDU podcaster would ask. And even as I struggled through my first episode with Jen Giffen @virtualgiff I realized that I would have to be more open. Open in my question frame, open in my mindset, and open to where the story takes me. As soon as I released a little grip on the wheel, the stories emerged and took over. In this episode I go where a story pulled me. The horrific events of February 14th, 2018 that occurred at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida electrified me. I found my social and news feeds overflowing with content that enraged and confused me. And even though I wanted to talk with someone closer to the context I waited. I researched. I measured. I reflected and then I reached out to Brad Sheffler an educator and podcaster based out of Orlando. This episode focusses in on how to talk about guns and schools. And honestly, I had no idea about how to do this. My questions felt awkard, my sense of clarity was fuzzy, and throughout the entire conversation I struggled with measuring my respect for the topic. Yet, I also wondered if this is what it feels like to unbox a truely pivotal topic. I am incredibly grateful to Brad for his honest and open support of my learning.   I highly reccommend that you check out The Beast blog on Wordpress at the same time as you listen to this podcast. Kelly and Andrea's pieces set up a scale to our conversation that cracks open many of the silos that are so easy to lock ourselves into. And at the same time, they offer their vulnerability as a vehicle to go deeper, ask another question, and keep seeking.   I have been thinking a lot about the EDU bubble. Not just the challenges that are created by it or the frustrations that arise from it, but also the composition of it. Honestly, it is way too easy to call out the competitive agendas that exist inside and outside the bubble...but what of the actual bubble? What is it really made of? Its not surprising to me that I have started to look at the stories that emerge from the surface tension on the bubble. The spirit of Chasing Squirrels has always pursued the curious stories  about the relationship between educator and system - more and more the convos have started to include the challenges of creating EDU spaces with the community included as a fully participating role. And I have begun to appreciate the little bits of source code that are being written and rewritten there. The colocation of essential services that could support learning is one sample of the new thinking that is popping in the dialogue between systems. German Villegas is the human behind the ModernManhood Podcast and he exists directly in that space 'between'. He spends his time working with youth and males in a human service capacity and supports conversations with men about their masculinity and what it means to be a modern man.   At least once a week I find a post in my social that focusses on tracking future jobs. Often it is couched in a convo about our students aiming for a job force that has not even been dreamed of yet. And that future is seeded by helping students embrace the Edtech tools that accelerate their learning and activate their 'moonshot' thinking. I think Emily Fitzgerald has one of those future jobs. Welcome to the podcast's 1st year anniversary episode ... or just call it the 'really, really' episode. A tweet from @derekrhodenizer sets the stage for a conversation about silo smashing in EDU.

I started only reading my Twitter feed in the very early morning hours, as I take my dog for a walk. At that time of day even the internet is fairly calm and peaceful. It feels like in the predawn hours I can actually focus on the feed and even find amazing content. Funnily, my dog will lay down and go back to sleep if I stall to long over an engaging post. And it was in this moment that I came across a blog that caught my eye. It grabbed me because of the title and I stayed for the entire whole hearted narrative. Jen has been blogging since the early 2005 and througout her writings the themes of change, student advocacy, and equity come through loud and clear. Her tweet rattled me because of its raw questioning of 'Am I in a rut?' A truth in education is that the life of teacher can be long and satisfying, but what happens to a person when change simulatneously becomes necessary and hard to envisage. I've been thinking about the times in my EDU career when I was witness to a kind of deeper truth or source code. The moments tend to be fleeting and sometimes I missed large parts because my mind was launchd into in a different place than my ears. But, when I held the moment and flowed with the conversation I walked away feeling the satisfaction of truely learning a lesson.  My talk with Michelle, a clinician leading a Mental Health strategy for a large school board, was one of the moments where I think I got a peak behind the curtain and started to understand the inner workings of education. And a truth that emerged was that we just might be coming to place where curriculum, classroom, and mental health are seen as equal and connected components of a larger, life continuum. I got a process for approaching a podcast. I usually lurk the blogosphere and twitter profiles once I find a person who piques my interest. After that my mind races, I shape questions, and then connect with the potential guest. Remarkably, cold calls and boundless curiosity have brought phenomenal people into my little EDUniverse. The plan for talking with Jen was broad and there were a few checkpoints that I thought we could pass through. As it happens when you meet a kindred thinker, single topics are enough. I have tried in the past to get my classrooms outside. Sometimes it works others not so much. I can't say for sure what anchors a learner to one ideal space for learning, but I can definitely say that I crave to read and write while sitting under a tree moreso than in a desk under fluorescent light. Search out the key term 'classroom' online and you are pretty much guaranteed to find standard stuff. Chairs, tables, and a whole lot of indoor spaces fill the top hits. Tanya is an educator that is bringing a different pov to learning design and learning spaces. Part of her new position with her school board is just that - making the outdoors accessible to all learners.
