We are living in a time of contradictions. For the last forty years, our politics and media have been dominated by neoliberal, right-wing voices - yet pundits insist that the UK is dominated by a woke, left-wing elite. Our politicians claim to champion the voices of the forgotten working class - yet working-class people are not seeing better wages, housing or healthcare. And the majority of people in this country are being screwed by the economic system - yet for some reason we seem unable to secure a better future for ourselves. So where did it all go wrong? Are we really ruled over by a censorious woke mob? Or is it all a convenient story, to distract us from the real villains? Half a year ago, the Labour Party swept into power with a huge parliamentary majority and Kier Starmer celebrated by saying that the country could “get its future back”. Today, Labour are dogged by low approval ratings, having upset everyone from environmentalists to pensioners, farmers to small-business owners. And just last week Reform overtook both the Conservatives and Labour in a poll of voting intentions - suggesting the public are already looking for an alternative. So, why has the public seemingly turned on the Labour Party? Should they be threatened by the rise of Reform? And how can the progressive movement push this government to create the world we want? The price of your food shop rocketed because of inflation and now your mortgage is going up hundreds of pounds because the Bank of England decided to increase interest rates. You might be struggling to make ends meet and wondering why our central bank has made your life more difficult. Across the pond Donald Trump is putting pressure on the American central bank to lower its interest rates, saying he knows more about it than Federal Reserve policymakers. It might seem a tempting proposal to the average American who feels that their central bank has not provided them with the stability it is supposed to. So what is the role of central banks in all of this? Are they under threat from right-wing populism? And what are the progressive alternatives to dealing with inflation? Send us a textI'm thrilled to share the latest episode of the "Endless Possibilities Podcast" with you. This time, we dive deep into the realms of spiritual awakening and self-realization with our incredible guest, Harri, a seasoned author and spiritual teacher. Here's a sneak peek into the enlightening conversation we had:Key Takeaways from the Episode:The Nature of Consciousness: Harri shares profound insights on how consciousness is a simple yet intricate journey, much like the evolution of cars from the Model T to modern self-driving vehicles.Intellectual Understanding vs. Direct Experience: We discuss how intellectual understanding can deepen the experience of self-realization, but it's the direct, profound knowingness that truly transforms. Witnessing Consciousness: Learn about the shift from identifying with thoughts and emotions to recognizing a witnessing consciousness, a concept popularized by Eckhart Tolle.Stages of Awakening: Harry explains the journey of self-realization as a progression from witnessing to a deeper understanding of unity, likening it to paddling down a river towards a vast ocean.Unity Consciousness: Discover how unity consciousness is about expanding the self rather than dissolving boundaries, leading to a richer, more integrated experience of life.Masculine and Feminine Energies: Explore the interplay between pure awareness (masculine) and dynamic energy (feminine) in the context of consciousness.Kundalini Energy: Harry elaborates on how the dynamic force of shakti rising and merging with pure awareness affects both consciousness and the body. The Eternal and Infinite Self: Reflect on the nature of unity consciousness as an eternal and infinite state of self-realization, encouraging a deeper understanding of the divine quality present in all aspects of life. Why You Should Listen:Personal Growth: Gain insights that can help you on your own spiritual journey, whether you're just starting out or have been exploring for years.Practical Wisdom: Harri's stories and analogies make complex spiritual concepts accessible and relatable.Thank you for being a part of our journey.
Onko kaupunkirakentamisen keinoista apua ilmastonmuutokseen sopeutumisessa? Sitä pohtivat kaupunkimeteorologian professori Leena Järvi, Helsingin yliopistosta ja maisema-arkkitehtuurin professori Ranja Hautamäki, Aalto yliopistosta. Tiedeykkösen toimittaa Leena Mattila.
Do you work from home? Then you're probably not doing proper work, and you're causing the UK's economic decline! At least that's what the former boss of Asda and M&S said last week. Meanwhile, gig economy Deliveroo riders have launched a new campaign for greater openness around the opaque algorithms that rule their working lives. It's clear with new technology comes new battles for workers. So what is working life like in the UK right now? After pandemic lockdowns and high inflation, have we changed our expectations of what work provides? And are unions ready to lead the fight back against bad work? Last week hundreds of tractors drove through Parliament Square. It was the latest protest by UK farmers against changes to inheritance tax announced by the chancellor. From farmers' protests to the poll-tax riots in the 90s, the amount of tax we pay to the government churns up intense emotions. We want to rescue our cash-strapped public services - but most of us are reluctant to pay more tax. Do Labour's tax plans go far enough to fix our broken economy? Is the UK really a high-tax nation? And if we want an economy that meets everyone's needs, do we all just need to pay more tax? Ayeisha Thomas-Smith is joined by Sara Hall, deputy director at Tax Justice UK, and Hannah Peaker, director of policy at NEF, to discuss. From housebuilding to sewage systems to the NHS, private companies are deeply intertwined with our essential public services. But is partnering with big corporations the only way of improving people's lives? Is private investment a vital ingredient in economic renewal? Or will it just lead to price gouging for us and soaring profits for corporate execs? This week Ayeisha Thomas-Smith is joined by Daniela Gabor, professor of economics at SOAS, and Aveek Bhattacharya, research director at the Social Market Foundation, to discuss the role of private investment in our economy and public services. Toimittajana on Minna Korhonen on villakoiran ytimessä. Haastateltavina ovat Työterveyslaitoksen johtajava asiantuntija Tapani Tuomi ja Aalto yliopiston vanhempi tutkija Juha Koivisto.

Academics from everywhere experiment, collaborate, and even interpret our stories of "This one time at Burning Man."In this episode, Stuart talks with people from Burning Nerds, an annual gathering of academics in Black Rock City. They keep it light, though; not too many unnecessarily fancy words. Dr Jukka-Pekka Heikkilä shares about the Open Strategy management technique used by Burning Man Project that gives more power to the people. Bryan Yazell and Patricia Wolf of University of Southern Denmark report on using Flash Fiction in BRC to develop a new subgenre of sci-fi called climate fiction (‘cli-fi'), stories that are less dystopian, even less utopian, more protopian (fancy word) about society that improves over time, rather than transcending all it's problems or descending into dysfunction.Professor Matt Zook of University of Kentucky extols the unique aspects of Black Rock City, from materiality to temporality, to being a place apart. He and Stuart explore the interplay between digital and physical spaces, and what about community actually makes it good. Then Jukka-Pekka Heikkilä returns to reveal how the Burning Stories project, now in its 6th year of tracking tales, is now a cultural repository, and is training a gifted AI on how Burners be Burning.jukkapekka.comsdu.dk/en/persons/yazellsdu.dk/en/persons/pawogeography.as.uky.edu/users/zookburningman.org/programs/philosophical-center/academicsregionals.burningman.org/european-leadership-summitburning-stories.comkk.org/thetechnium/protopiasdu.dk/en/paca-at-burning-man-festival-2024 LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG

Tatu Marttila is a Finnish designer, lecturer and researcher in Aalto university, who works in one ICOS project in relation to cities. We talk in this interview about his work in the project, and his previous work on sustainability. This is a series of 5 interviews to people based or coming from: Ireland, Finland, Denmark, France and the United States. The main focus is in understanding the possible role of design in infrastructures. I started this enquiry interviewing designers involved in the development of services for other projects or based in other infrastructures. I want to ask them: what can we design in relation to the work of infrastructures? I work for ICOS, Integrated Carbon Observation Systems. This is a Research Infrastructure focusing on carbon. It provides standardised and open data from close to 180 measurement stations across 16 European countries. The stations observe greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and also carbon fluxes between the atmosphere, the land surface and the oceans. My work at the moment concentrates on one EU project: IRISCC. Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change Risks. In this project we will develop services using a co-design framework. Therefore, my main question is how design could contribute to the development of services? This interview is part of the lists: Diseño en transición, Finlandia y diseño, Infrastructures, Diseño sostenible y D & D in English. In this last list I compiled the interviews done for this podcast in English. We have at the moment only 20 interviews published in English.
Muistatko vuonna 2019 julkistetun ensimmäisen kuvan mustasta aukosta? Suomen suurin radioteleskooppi on Metsähovin radio-observatorio. Siellä on yksi 14 metriä halkaisijaltaan oleva lautasantenni suuren kuvun sisällä ja useita pienempiä antenneja. Aalto-yliopistoon kuuluva radio-observatorio on mukana kansainvälisissä interferometrihankkeissa ja suomalaistutkijat ovat kehittäneet tätä mullistavaa tekniikkaa osaltaan eteenpäin. Haastateltavana Metsähovin radio-observatorion johtaja Joni Tammi ja radiointerverometriaan erikoistunut tähtitieteilijä Tuomas Savolainen. Toimittajana Jari Mäkinen.

This month we are joined by Dr. Raymond Liu from Case Western Reserve and Rainbow Babies in Cleveland to discuss his work on skeletal maturity grading systems, patient reported outcomes in limb deformity, and 3D anatomical studies. Hear about Mongolia pushing the limits in rigid nailing of pediatric femur fractures and stick around for highlights from the lightning round including ultrasound for fracture diagnosis, guided growth for patellar instability and 3D analysis after spinal fusion. Your hosts are Julia Sanders from Children's Hospital Colorado, Carter Clement from Children's Hospital of New Orleans, Craig Louer from Vanderbilt, and Josh Holt from University of Iowa. Music by A. A. Aalto. For more information on the JPO Journal Club organized by Dr Liu, please contact Caroline Eaton from Advancing Pediatric Orthopaedics at ceaton@faportho.org.
