In this episode, we speak with Elif Kubilay about a study she conducted with Sule Alan on how adolescents can be empowered to change the social climate in schools. We discuss student-teachers, peer influence, bullying, self-persuasion, and what happens when students are trusted with real responsibility. The paper is available here. Elif Kubilay is an Associate Professor in Economics at the University of Essex. Her research focuses on development economics, labour economics, education, and behavioural economics, with a particular interest in how school environments shape children's cognitive and non-cognitive skills.

You catch a smell. A lotion, a tea, something cooking. And in under a second — before you've even thought about it — you're home. That's not nostalgia. That's not weakness. That is your nervous system doing something remarkable. This week we're joined by psychologist and cross-cultural specialist Elif Durgel, founder of Roots and Wings Academy in Eindhoven, for a warm, science-light conversation about why smell bypasses the thinking brain entirely and connects directly to memory, identity and emotion — and what that means for international parents living far from where they started. We talk about:Why smell hits faster and deeper than any other senseWhat nervous system regulation actually feels like from the insideThe invisible extra load of living between cultures — and why July makes it louderWhy so many of us quietly deny ourselves the things that helpWhy going to the expat shop isn't retail therapy — it's something more real than thatWhether you're heading home this summer, somewhere completely new, or discovering the Netherlands in July for the first time — this one is your permission slip.20 minutes. If you've been lucky enough to hear Dave play live recently, you will have heard an old favourite tune enthusiastically pulling back the curtains, blinking at the sun, having a good stretch, and returning to the fray for '26 in majestic, remixed fashion. Yes, the much-loved 'Nightfalls' is back.nnDave's love affair with the haunting vocal refrain ("And at sunrise / And at sunset / But when night falls / the music") from The Ananda Project's 'Cascades of Colour' has lasted for a quarter of a century, initially as a centrepiece of his much-loved Cape Town mix for Global Underground from 2000.nnIn 2016, appreciative of the exposure Dave had given their track, The Ananda Project returned the favour, giving Dave sample clearance to use the vocal – and 'Nightfalls' was born, making a right noise all its own as Selador's 50th release.nnAnd now…that haunting yet uplifting, inescapable vocal hook is back, with a re-fashioned 'Nightfalls' a focal point of Dave's eagerly anticipated album. Dave has, of course, recorded a new version himself – deep, breaks-driven, chilled yet ever so slightly menacing.nnA trio of handpicked remixers bring us glorious variety with their reinterpretations.nnElif's seriously atmospheric take guarantees transcendental dancefloor epiphanies.nnDilby's heads down throbber is pure energy, the vocal atop a sumptuous sonic stew.nnCioz is pure melodic wonk, a funky piano line underpinning a riot of riffs. Elif Koyutürk is a filmmaker, photographer, and all-around artist originally from Istanbul, now based in Bend, Oregon. Elif works across many mediums—photography, poetry, film, and more—but the throughline in everything she does is a drive to make people feel a story, not just read the facts of it. She brings a rare kind of power and passion to her work, and it's clear that her connection to land and place isn't just a subject for her, it's personal. Like so many fascinating people I talk to on this podcast, her path wasn't a straight line. She grew up between the massive city of Istanbul and her family's farm, raised by journalist parents and a house full of grandmothers steeped in Anatolian tradition. She taught herself photography using a camera with a moldy, secondhand 23-euro lens and won international awards with it before she ever touched professional, high-dollar gear. From there she talked her way onto a Red Bull film crew in a hotel lobby, worked in Austria, and eventually landed in Los Angeles with one suitcase and no contacts, on an "Extraordinary Ability" visa. In this conversation, we get into all of it—her childhood in Istanbul, her creative process and her synesthesia, and how she built a career from nothing through sheer resourcefulness and energy. We also spend a lot of time on her new film, Guardians of Anatolia, which premiered at Telluride Mountainfilm and follows a female-led nomadic tribe in Turkey's Taurus Mountains as they fight to hold onto a 9,000-year-old matriarchal way of life against modern water and land pressures. I hope you enjoy this one, as it hits on so many of the topics I enjoy– art, conservation, agriculture, creativity, and hard work– but with an international perspective that is now rooted here in the West. --- Elif Koyutürk Guardians of Anatolia Elif on Instagram Episode notes and links: https://mountainandprairie.com/elif-koyuturk --- THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS: Mountain & Prairie is listener supported via Patreon, and brought to you with support from the Freeflow Institute, The Nature Conservancy in Colorado, and the Well Done Foundation for their generous sponsorship. --- TOPICS DISCUSSED: 0:00 - Introducing Elif Koyutürk 2:49 - Early Elif 7:36 - Artistic inclinations  11:33 - To the U.S.  18:34 - Off the plane in L.A. 22:20 - Making money 24:57 - Connections to friendships 28:50 - Being raw and clumsy 30:49 - Guardians of Anatolia origin story 37:49 - A vanishing way of life 40:23 - Emerging filmmaker  43:40 - Path forward for the film 45:54 - What's next 51:39 - Old Salt takeaways 57:15 - Plot twist: jiu jitsu! 1:02:52 - Rivers in Bend, OR 1:05:35 - Book recs 1:08:16 - Wrapping up --- ABOUT MOUNTAIN & PRAIRIE: Mountain & Prairie - All Episodes Mountain & Prairie Shop Mountain & Prairie on Instagram Upcoming Events About Ed Roberson Leave a Review on Apple Podcasts

Mehrere literarische Preise (u. a. NOBODY IS COMING TO PICK YOU ⚡ BEFORE YOU PRESS PLAY... At some point in our lives, most of us are taught to wait. Wait to be chosen. Wait to be invited. Wait to be discovered. Wait until we're ready. Wait until someone gives us permission. The problem? Some people spend their entire lives waiting. Waiting for confidence. Waiting for certainty. Waiting for someone else to tell them they're enough. This episode is a reminder that some of the most powerful things you'll ever create happen the moment you stop waiting and decide to choose yourself.

Breaking the Approval Addiction: Why Engineers Struggle With Autonomy in Leadership

In this episode of Wine After Work, Bryce sits down with Elif Acar-Chiasson, P.E., founder of OPLE Leadership and former COO with over 30 years in the AEC industry. Elif built her consulting practice after living inside what she calls a "broken autonomy model." Brilliant engineers are promoted into leadership roles, then trapped in approval culture where every decision climbs uphill for permission. The leader becomes the bottleneck. The team stops growing. Everyone burns out. Together, Bryce and Elif unpack: • Why technical excellence and leadership requirements are often in conflict • The hidden addiction to approval and control inside engineering firms • Why autonomy is not "do whatever you want," but clear decision ownership with guardrails • How emotional intelligence supports decision-making under pressure • What stepping away from a COO role taught Elif about fit and courage • Why leading with both head and heart is not weakness but maturity • What competitive ballroom dancing at 50 revealed about starting over and discomfort Elif shares a systemic approach to leadership. Instead of coaching one overwhelmed leader in isolation, she looks at the entire decision architecture of a team. Who owns what? Where decisions stall. How trust is built or broken. Her core belief: the most critical structural integrity is not in buildings. It is in teams. About Elif: Elif Acar-Chiasson, P.E., is a Professional Engineer and founder of OPLE Leadership. After 12 years as an executive, including 8 as COO at CSRS/Westwood, she now works with technical professionals who are exceptional at their craft but struggling in leadership roles. She translates emotional intelligence into engineering frameworks and helps teams redesign how decisions are made so leaders are no longer the bottleneck. Originally from Istanbul, Turkey, Elif brings a multicultural lens to leadership and challenges the idea that "people skills" are separate from technical rigor.   https://www.elifchiasson.com/

In this episode of Walk Talk Listen, Maurice Bloem speaks with sociologist and qualitative research expert Dr. Elif Kuş Saillard, originally from Turkey and now based in France. Elif reflects on a life shaped by curiosity and questions. Growing up in central Anatolia, she developed an early habit of asking “why,” a habit that eventually led her to sociology and an academic career as a professor at Ankara University. Over the years, she specialized in qualitative research and narrative methodologies, focusing on how people create meaning in their lives and societies.   After moving to France, Elif went through a profound personal transition that led her to explore deeper questions about identity, purpose, and well-being. Out of this journey emerged her Four-Body model, which describes human life as lived through four interconnected dimensions: the physical body, the social body, the earth body, and the technological body.   In this conversation, Elif shares why understanding meaning-making is essential to understanding society and why science should ultimately serve a purpose — contributing to a more sustainable and meaningful future.   Listener Engagement: Discover the songs picked by Elif and other guests on our #walktalklisten here. In this episode of MaternalRx, Dr. Elif Polat, MD, researcher, endometriosis advocate, and Turkey representative for Worldwide EndoMarch, joins Dr. Danielle Plummer to discuss the often misunderstood and deeply complex condition of endometriosis. Dr. Polat unpacks what endometriosis truly is, explaining how it's both an inflammatory and hormone-dependent disease that can affect any organ in the body, even beyond the reproductive system. She reveals why diagnosis can take up to ten years, why standard tests often miss it, and how its symptoms can extend far beyond pelvic pain, sometimes presenting in surprising ways. The conversation dives into how endometriosis impacts fertility, pregnancy, and the risk of ectopic pregnancy, and clarifies when tools like hysteroscopy may be appropriate. Dr. Polat also dispels common myths, such as the belief that pregnancy or hysterectomy can cure the disease, and emphasizes the importance of continued research and advocacy. Listeners will gain insight into how endometriosis affects not only patients but their families and communities, and how global initiatives like Worldwide EndoMarch (@endomarch) are driving awareness and change.
