Send us a textIn this deeply moving episode, Rose speaks with Ustadha Zaynab Ansari about her spiritual awakening as a young American Muslim woman studying in Damascus in the 1990s, her journey through traditional scholarship, and the personal trials that reshaped her faith, including widowhood and becoming a single mother overnight. Zaynab explores how Islam's spiritual core can offer healing in times of grief, the role of women scholars, and the need for honest community accountability in the face of abuse. Zaynab's voice is one of fierce rahma-compassion, honesty, and grace as she reflects on her life's path and shares hard-won wisdom for navigating faith, loss, motherhood, and the complexities of being a Muslim woman scholar in the U.S. today.Ustadha Zaynab Mansour Ansari spent her formative years studying traditional Islam in Damascus, Syria, and has been active in Islamic education for over 20 years as a teacher, writer, and mentor. She teaches with the Ribaat Academic Institute and Jannah Institute and is currently a full-time instructor at Tayseer Seminary in Tennessee. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ameera shares how connecting with the Prophet Muhammad, studying with women scholars, and returning to embodied practices helped her move from resentment to trust. This conversation is for anyone navigating disillusionment, identity, or the long road home to themselves.Ameera Aslam is a bestselling author, award-winning poet, translator, editor, and activist from Singapore. How does Turkey navigate its strategic balancing act between Russia and the EU? Turkey stands at a geopolitical crossroads between Moscow's influence, Brussels' expectations, and its own shifting ambitions. In this episode, we dive into how Turkey manages its complex relationships with both Russia and the European Union, what “strategic autonomy” really means, and how domestic politics play into global positioning. To unpack this complex dynamic, Ricardo Silvestre (Movimento Liberal Social) is joined by Elif Menderes, Program Manager at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and a specialist in political communication. They discuss her chapter in the ELF publication Towards a New Iron Curtain, titled 'Türkiye's Perspective on the Resurgence of the Iron Curtain: Balancing Relations with Russia and the European Union'. Pınarating (10 Nisan 2025) - Elif Buse Doğan by Kafa Radyo
For this week's episode, I have the immense honour of speaking with Elif Shafak — an internationally acclaimed and award-winning author whose work has been translated into more than 55 languages. With 21 published books to her name, including 13 novels, Elif has built a remarkable body of work that spans continents, cultures, and generations. Her writing is rich, lyrical, and deeply political, shaped by her experiences of living in multiple countries, her life in exile, and her unwavering belief in the power of stories to build bridges and foster understanding. In this episode, we talk about her latest novel, There Are Rivers In The Sky, a beautifully layered and timely book that flows across generations and continents, weaving together stories of identity, migration, belonging, and the sacredness of water. We explore the urgent themes at the heart of the novel — climate change, political unrest, and the silencing of voices — and how Elif draws on oral storytelling traditions to give voice to those often unheard. We also speak about the symbolism of water, the language of silence, and how fiction can hold both beauty and protest at once. This is a powerful and reflective conversation that touches on hope, resilience, and the role of the writer in turbulent times. I am beyond honoured to be speaking with Elif for this episode. --I hope you loved listening to this episode and found things that will stay with you. Today's guest is the beloved author, Elif Shafak, whose latest title was a 2024 Summer Reading Guide pick. Elif's works are so particular and set very much in a specific time and place, yet they also feel so inclusive. Elif's stories explore universal themes like home and belonging, exile and displacement. She also leverages her Turkish heritage and accesses storytelling traditions that are sometimes unfamiliar to Western readers. Elif is one of Anne's favorite writers working right now, in large part because she attempts things no other writer would think of. Today, they talk about that as well as the mythologies and metaphors that make her books so engrossing.
