The owner, Paul Reyes, sat down and chatted with us about his experiences thus far starting his own business. His motivation behind starting his business was to be able to spend more time with his daughter. What he didn't expect was how much social media affects business. Coming from a traditional luxury dining setting prior to Ciao Down, he was afraid he would have missed so much of his daughter's life. Now, as a self-employed entrepreneur, he is able to enjoy all of the freedoms that come with setting his own schedule and being his own boss. Not only that, but he is able to see the fruits of his labor in a more direct way. He attributes much of their success to social media! It is interesting to see how social media affects business in different industries, especially in Paul's! People want to hear reviews from friends and family or read a review on google. It is so much more about a personal recommendation, rather than a restaurant critique from a professional. So how does social media affect businesses like food trucks? With the nature of a food truck, they are able to serve food wherever they want and wherever there is a need. Paul said it best himself, "whether it's a kid's birthday party or a brewery event, we are there to feed hungry people." In this episode, Paul shares about what truly forced him into Ciao Down full time... and it might not be what you expect! We are so excited to be sharing Paul & Ciao Down's story, we really hope you enjoy it! Paul & Ciao Down's info: Website Facebook Instagram Twitter

In the process of choosing your prices and rates, keep in mind that you are not only charging for the product itself and your time to make it. You must also factor in the value of your experience and your knowledge. Pricing as a maker business should avoid the "materials cost x, it took me x hours to make, therefore I charge x" approach. You want to charge for the value the product will bring. The prices you set and the types of pieces you produce will inevitably attract a certain type of buyer. In your business, you can choose if you want to create products that lean more towards being a commodity or a luxury item. You can hang out somewhere in the middle, too. What is most important is that you value your time, efforts, and the value of your products. The right customers will find you if you stay true to these three things! We hope that this episode was helpful for you as you figure out your pricing as a maker business! Read a full blog post about pricing as a maker business here! Listen to this episode on Spotify!

Here are the apps and software we mentioned (and more!) that can help you out in the journey to becoming a virtual business. Video chatting apps: just because you're a virtual business, doesn't mean your work together. Google Hangouts is easily accessible through your G-Suite account and you can set up meetings by creating calendar events and inviting others. You will also get a link to the meeting that allows people to join outside of the calendar event. Zoom Meetings is an easily downloadable software that allows you to have group meetings, just like Hangouts. Zoom, however, allows you to record the meeting in progress so that people who couldn't make it are still able to watch at a later date. Skype is also an easily downloadable software similar to Hangouts. With all of these apps and software mentioned, you can use video or just audio. Facetime is an Apple app that allows you to easily video chat with others. If you would like to group video chat, first create a group chat and click the facetime button at the top of the screen where the member's icons are. Communication: one of the most important parts of a virtual business. Slack is a group & individual messaging app where you set up individual “channels” or groups for specific sets of employees. You can also have a general channel for all communication; employees can also direct message each other. Voxer is a walkie-talkie app where you can instantly send voice messages to each other. Marco Polo is similar to Voxer, only instead of audio alone, you send videos. Document transfer and computer access: #1 tip... don't email important documents!  Scanner apps are a great solution to eliminate clients having to come into your office to drop off documents. They are also a great way to cut down on trips to the office to use the scanner. Scanner apps work by taking a well-lit photo of the document and the app will save it as a PDF. If you have an iPhone, the built notes app also has this capability. Just press the camera icon at the bottom of a new note. Google Drive uses a cloud system that allows everyone on your team to access documents that are uploaded there. We organize our drive by client and then by year. If you would like, you can restrict access to certain documents if there is an issue of privacy. Go to My PC is a software you download onto your computer you'd like to access remotely. Once you connect it through your account, you will be able to access your desktop from anywhere on any device (your phone, tablet, home computer, etc). All you need to do is log in! Client Intake and Support: make sure your clients feel cared for in your virtual environment.

In this interview, we talked to Jessica Korff from Fleur de Lea Photography! Jessica specializes in luxury high school senior portraits and therapeutic photography. Jessica does not simply take photos and deliver them to her clients, but rather she is with them throughout the entire process. That is what makes it a luxury experience. Her initiatives for healing through photography and helping women see themselves how the world sees them are so powerful. She also is a big advocate for collaborating in business due to the sometimes lonely nature of being a photographer. Life as a solo entrepreneur can definitely be lonely, and she really believes that networking groups have given her a community of business owners! Another benefit of collaborating in business is personal development and learning to be a good team member. Even if you are a solo entrepreneur, it is still possible to have the input and help of others. This really helps round out a business to live to its full potential. If you want to learn more about how you can succeed in your business, read a few of our blog posts about business ownership! You're sure to find valuable information!
