Walgreens is set to shutter 500 locations in 2025 as part of a sweeping $1 billion cost-cutting initiative, CEO Tim Wentworth announced last fall. The closures are part of a broader plan to eliminate 1,200 underperforming stores nationwide over the next several years, with locations in 33 states slated for closure. The pharmacy giant, which operates approximately 8,500 stores across the U.S., has acknowledged that nearly a quarter of its locations are not profitable. By 2027, roughly one in seven Walgreens stores will have closed, mirroring similar downsizing efforts by competitors like CVS, which recently completed a plan to shutter 900 locations.California will see significant store closures, with more locations to close than any other state.
The Cuvers. Hendrik Cuver and his wife Amber Cuver, from CuVer Brewery in Windsor, join Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha today. They are here to talk about their Windsor, California brewery where they specialize in Belgian beer. Hendrik was on this episode of Brew Ha Ha back on September 16, 2021, when they were just opening the brewery. He was also on this episode on May 5, 2022, a year and a half later. Also today, Harry Duke will be calling in live from Russian River Brewing Co. in Windsor. The Pliny the Younger public event is in full swing there. His portion of this live radio show will be on this separate podcast episode page, to allow each guest to have their own audio and podcast indexing. Cuver's Origin Hendrick and his father were used to drinking Belgian beers when they immigrated to California in 2012. A year later they started home brewing in order to have the beer that they wanted. They continued doing that while Hendrick was back in Belgium getting his Master's degrees in Biochemistry. Then when St. Florian's brewery came up for sale, they made the purchase. The history of Cuver Brewery and the two families that founded it are closely intertwined. Hendrick invited his fiancée Amber and her family to meet his family at Thanksgiving. Amber's father Reed Cushing became a partner in the brewery. When Hendrick and Amber got married, they changed their surnames to Cuver, derived from combining Cushing and Verspecht. Read the whole story on the Cuver website, on this page. A thorough analysis of the current state of the furniture industry reveals a landscape fraught with both challenges and opportunities as we navigate through the complexities of economic fluctuations and shifting consumer preferences. The discussion commences with an examination of the performance metrics from the last quarter of 2024, highlighting a dichotomy amongst retailers; while some have experienced a steady demand, others have been ensnared by the tightening grip of inflationary pressures and altered spending habits. The prevailing economic climate, characterized by elevated interest rates, has rendered substantial purchases, particularly in the realm of furniture, a more arduous endeavor for consumers, who are now inclined to prioritize essential items over indulgent acquisitions. As we look towards the second quarter of 2025, the forecast remains cautiously optimistic, with analysts suggesting a potential for growth tempered by consumer demands for value and promotional offerings. Retailers must adapt by employing strategic marketing practices that resonate with the modern consumer's desire for affordability and quality. In addition to the economic analysis, the episode delves into pivotal legislative changes that may significantly impact the industry, notably the imposition of new tariffs by the current administration. The impending 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, alongside a doubling of tariffs on Chinese goods, portends inevitable price increases for manufacturers who rely on international sourcing for materials. This, in turn, necessitates a reevaluation of operational strategies within retail establishments; businesses must navigate these cost escalations by optimizing supply chains and potentially shifting towards domestic production. The discussion also highlights the burgeoning trends of customization and technological integration in furniture design, reflecting a consumer base that increasingly values personalized solutions and smart home innovations.Amidst these challenges, the conversation transitions to the evolving consumer landscape, particularly in the realm of mattresses and bedding, where an increasing emphasis on sleep wellness has emerged. Innovations such as cooling technologies and organic materials cater to a consumer desire for healthier sleep environments. Retailers are urged to educate their clientele on these advancements, thereby enhancing the consumer's shopping experience and fostering loyalty. As the retail landscape continues to shift, marked by a decline in foot traffic for traditional big box stores and an ascendance of e-commerce, the emphasis on creating immersive in-store experiences becomes paramount. Retailers must harness technological advancements to engage consumers effectively, ensuring that convenience and personalization remain at the forefront of their strategies. In summation, as the furniture industry grapples with economic adversities, those brands that embrace customization, sustainability, and technological innovation are poised to thrive in this dynamic marketplace.Takeaways: The furniture industry experienced mixed performance in the last quarter of 2024, influenced by economic factors such as inflation and consumer spending shifts. Analysts project cautious growth for the second quarter of 2025, as consumers seek value-driven purchasing options amidst rising costs. The implementation of new tariffs is anticipated to increase material costs, compelling retailers to strategize on operational efficiency and pricing. Customization in furniture design is becoming increasingly significant, with consumers expressing a strong preference for personalized options and modular designs. Sustainability remains a high priority for consumers, who are actively seeking furniture produced from recycled materials and responsibly sourced wood. The retail landscape is...

Last week, the Safeway in San Francisco's Fillmore District controversially closed its doors for good. That same day, it was reported another location in Pinole is set to close this April. The trend continues as another Safeway in the Bay Area is closing. One of the grocery chain's Vallejo stores is shutting down this spring, a Safeway spokesperson confirmed to KRON4.The location on Admiral Callaghan Lane is closing on or around April 11, according to the Safeway spokesperson. Safeway cited “ongoing safety concerns” and “financial performance” as reasons to shut down one of its three Vallejo stores.
In a week, 230 New Zealanders were given confirmation Kinleith Mill was over. The Australians facing the same scenario at a place called Whyalla in South Australia did something completely different. The steel mill is owned by a British billionaire and it's in a world of financial trouble. It may well go to the wall. It employs 1000 people in a town of 22,000. So the state Government, backed by the Federal Government, has bought it. Even for a Labour Government in Australia it is an extraordinary move. But the assessment is, in a small town, you can't afford to lose that many jobs. They will look for a buyer, they will look for finance and they will look to rejig the place to solve the problem. But in the meantime, the place is open and the jobs are saved. The first question you ask, of course, is would this decision be made if it was not about a month or so out from an election, which is an election the Government who just bought the steel mill is in serious danger of losing? The precedent is also shocking. If you save one, surely you save them all? And if you don't, because you can't, the locals will, quite righty, ask why not? Also, the Government owning things in the long term has never really been a recipe for efficiency or success. As much heat as Labour got in the 1980's for selling the railways here, Helen Clark buying them back has hardly been one of life's great business decisions. In a small town though, at the pub or the dairy or the sports field, who cares? They've got jobs, the bills get paid, and the kids stay in the local school. They'll take it. Where the money came from doesn't really matter. As much as Shane Jones espouses the value of the regions, the region here still lost its mill. We still have the problem that is the price of power. It still hasn't been addressed as an issue, and we go into another winter with a mess of a system. In Australia the place is open, the jobs are saved and no one's leaving town.
