On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss the latest restaurant industry news, including that McDonald's CEO video, Cracker Barrel's ongoing sales woes, and new data that shows red flags for full-service restaurants. First up is the Big Arch video controversy, in which McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski was skewered for posting a video of himself eating the brand's new burger that came across as inauthentic to many. Sam and Alicia discuss the response from consumers and competitors alike, noting how many brands — Burger King specifically — raced to capitalize on the faux pas. Was this a mistake from McDonald's, or could it be that no news is bad news? Next up is Cracker Barrel, which reported that same store sales in its most recent quarter fell 7.1% as the brand continues to fight its way back from its own controversy last summer, when it reversed a controversial rebrand. Cracker Barrel claims there are reasons to be optimistic; do Sam and Alicia agree? Then they tackle a new report from Black Box Intelligence, which noted that 9% of full-service restaurants are at risk of closing in 2026. Sam and Alicia break down the numbers and why they think restaurateurs could indeed be at risk of failing this year. Finally, we share a conversation between managing editor Leigh Anne Zinsmeister and Darren Spicer, who just sold his Clutch Coffee brand to Dutch Bros. For more on these stories: Big Arch, big buzz: McDonald's turns viral moment into marketing opportunityCracker Barrel sees slow improvement despite continued traffic slump in Q29% of full-service restaurants are at risk for closure in 2026

Despite the fact that she's in the middle of calving season herself, DTN's Senior Livestock Editor Jennifer Carrico has been simultaneously staying on top of an avalanche of stories affecting U.S. cattle markets here in 2026. Today, she joins us with an update on all the latest, from cattle health to consumer demand and weather. We kick off the conversation with news on ongoing efforts to prevent the New World Screwworm from re-entering the U.S. This pesky pest hasn't been a problem for producers since the 1960s, but with a specimen found just miles from the U.S. border, USDA officials are beefing up prevention efforts with new facilities, and ranchers along the border remain on edge. We'll also talk about the growing pressure of a tick-borne disease in the U.S. herd, and hear about how to identify symptoms that are often mis-diagnosed. Then we'll switch gears to hear about a recent Cargill plant closure, and the USDA's newly announced “beef on top” food pyramid, and what kinds of impacts both of these events might have on cattle markets. We'll also hear about the potential impacts of the recent winter storms, especially on more southern cattle producers, and get introduced to the 2026 View from the Range ranchers from Montana and Alberta, Canada. Finally, we'll hear what Jenn is going to be watching as the season continues– especially evolving drought and wildfire conditions. The Maudes and the U.S. Forest Service: How a Fenceline Dispute Almost Tore a Family Apart

The title for this episode very much could have been: The Things You Only Say Aloud To Your Best Friend. This is the first episode of many to come, where I sit down with one of my best friends to talk about the things we typically only say to each other through 20-minute voice notes. You know... those messages you try to keep short, but before you know it, you're spilling your heart and soul into the phone, hoping she'll know exactly what to say on the other side. The conversations you wish you could have with more people about the realest parts of life. From what life is really like on the other side of shutting your, once very successful, company down, to the parts of motherhood people are struggling with but not saying aloud, to the complete whirlwind it is to let go of who you once were but have no idea who you are becoming. This is a real, raw, honest conversation about life in your mid-30s to early 40s, when your life looks nothing like you planned, but somehow you couldn't imagine it any other way. This is the kind of conversation that makes you feel less alone in the thoughts you've been carrying quietly. The ones that only come out when you're talking to someone who knows every version of you... past, present, and the one still unfolding. If you're in a season of transition… if you've outgrown parts of your old life but haven't quite landed in the next one yet… if you've found yourself wondering, is anyone else feeling this way? This episode is for you. Pull up a chair. Put your headphones in. And consider this your reminder that you're not behind, you're not broken, and if you desperately want to have these conversations in a voice note at 10pm, join us. The salient point of this discourse centers on the ongoing transformation within the furniture retail landscape, marked by significant ownership changes and a notable wave of closures among long-standing establishments. Our examination reveals that Buddy's Home Furnishings has recently transitioned to new ownership under Skyline Investors, a development that underscores a strategic emphasis on long-term stability amidst the tumultuous backdrop of franchise restructuring. Conversely, we must also confront the somber reality of Circle Furniture's filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, signaling an acute vulnerability faced by independent retailers despite their historical prominence in the market. This episode further explores the innovative approaches being undertaken by retailers, such as Bed Bath and Beyond's experimental foray into tokenized home financing, as they strive to adapt to evolving consumer preferences in a tightening economic environment. Collectively, these narratives illustrate a broader delineation of challenges and opportunities that characterize the current milieu in the furniture industry.Takeaways:The acquisition of Buddy's Home Furnishings by Skyline Investors signifies a strategic shift towards long-term stability and investment in the rent-to-own sector.Circle Furniture's closure, following a lengthy operational history, underscores the ongoing challenges faced by independent retailers amidst an evolving market landscape. The introduction of a tokenized home financing option by Bed Bath and Beyond reflects an innovative approach to adapt to changing consumer payment preferences in a tightening credit environment.Kinkaid Custom Upholstery's transition to an independent operation post-sale from La Z Boy indicates a potential for focused growth rather than decline following divestiture. The recent tariff reductions on imported rugs from India provide modest cost relief, potentially stabilizing pricing for retailers dependent on these goods.Overall, the furniture industry is witnessing significant transformations, marked by ownership shifts, closures of long-standing entities, and innovative financing strategies to enhance competitiveness.

Anne Stevenson-Yang characterizes China's history as a cyclical pattern of rising and crashing expectations, where eras of opening to the West—such as the 1890s and 1979—are inevitably followed by severe closures. She suggests that the current era represents another downturn in this cycle, where the excitement and prospects previously celebrated by the international community are now being "smashed back down" as the country closes itself off again.1783
