A weekly podcast located in Arizona focusing on music and record culture. The hosts are two regular collectors who love to dig and want to highlight others in their community.
This episode we got to interview someone we respect and admire so much. Don is actually a transplant from Chicago, a city rich in music history and community. Community. That word gets thrown around a lot but this episode truly exemplifies that. You wanna hear some good music stories but also want to hear someone explain what community means and why exercising your civic duty is also vital to growth of community? Look no further than episode 53. You'll be that much wiser after having listened to Don's experiences about growing up in Chicago , being involved in the house scene and why he left his city and made his life in Arizona. Plus, we get a little lesson on how to test whether or not someone has that authentic Chicago cuisine down.
Jamie is a DJ based out of Phoenix who not only likes to spin but has also done some time on the radio. You may have heard her voice over the airwaves at times in case you get a little deja vu on listening. What made this episode a lot of fun was how open Jamie was with looking back on her relationship with music and the city here as well. People often seem embarrassed to really talk about growth on their journey with music. Many will speak on what they've always loved but not on what they USED to love and how that shapes them today. Follow Jamie @JMELEE Follow us @justkeepspinningpodcast Email: JustKeepSpinningPodcast@gmail.com If you need assistance with food, clothes, or other goods contact @mutualaidphx Head to @recordbar_radio to listen to many selectors and DJ's from here in AZ
We decided to travel all the way to the east and bring you our second out of state guest, Alise. It's always nice getting a fresh perspective from someone that loves music more than records and doesn't mind being honest and giving their opinion on topics without arrogance. You can catch her on her personal IG @naturallyalise or on her new show located at @rnbrepresenters with her show partner @jrworldofsoul .
Okay guys so this is the actual 5-0 episode (popo free though so dont trip). Our guest is Davina. Davina calls Phoenix home and has an affinity for world music. We touch base on why world music appeals not just to her ears but her heart, the moves she's been making in the valley and she fills us in on RecordBar Radio and what it's all about! You can follow Davina and RecordBar Radio on IG at: @DavinaDavi and @recordbar_radio

You might remember Chawa from episode 10. We felt it was a good time to check up on her since the 3 year anniversary of Palabras Bilingual Bookstore is right around the corner. Chawa lets us into how her life has changed in the last year. What I love about this interview is you get a better sense of who she is as a person and why we champion Palabras as such an important space! Featured music of the week is from the Tucson band, Mesquite. Their new album, Caliche , is out now! So we know you all have been waiting for this one! Hands down this has been our number one most requested interview. Chances are if you've invested your nightlife time in Phoenix you've heard someone mention, Djentrification. I can't even recall how many people I've spoken with who light up at the opportunity to speak about his DJ skills or beam with a sense of pride that he hails from Phoenix. However, most of these statements would always follow up with some sort of personal anecdote how he really is just a genuinely nice person. Despite being a fan of his DJ skills I'd say that the most remarkable thing about him is his sense of compassion. 6.9.19 was one year of JKS and we are here to talk about that, highlight some events, record jail, why a certain sour DJ is suing Billboard and more! If you like music, puns and mispronunciations then this is the podcast for you!
This episode we cover the Rec Room a BYOV event in the east valley at the Nile hosted by Ken and Blanca, highlight some events and talk about musical maturity, what it is and whether or not our musical tastes should grow.
This week we read some listener mail and cover if we think the current #1 song in the country, "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X is fit for the country charts or R&B Charts and delve a little into Billboard history to explain how and why certain charts were tailored.
Main Topic: Annnd we're back! After a few crazy weeks and knocking one off the bucket list we are back and ready to share more stories and highlight one of the biggest events in the record community of the year, Record Store Day! We cover some of the releases we think are worth picking up, touch base on requests, and cover the new 3" record player being released this RSD!
Main Topic: This week we had the honor of interviewing Melissa the Midnight Mamacita. Many of you may know her from her infamous late night radio show, Lights Out Phoenix, on the old station for Hip Hop and RnB KKFR Power 92.3. If you talked to any of the ladies living in Phoenix during the last 90's and early 00's chances are they definitely listened to Lights Out Phoenix and waited to see what songs the Midnight Mamacita would play, made dedications themselves, or even waited to see if a dedication would be made to them. We talk to Melissa about how she landed in Phoenix, where her name came from, why Lights Out Phoenix was such a special part of her life, and some of the radio legends she looked up to! You can still catch her on 104.7 KISS FM every Saturday from 6a-10a and Sunday from 10a-2p. Hosted at : The Grand 718 N. Central Ave. Phx, AZ 85004
Main Topic: This week we interview DJ Vex of the Basement Tapes PHX crew. They're definitely carving their own place and leaving their mark on the valley. Vex is one of the coolest and most laid back individuals we've had the privilege of interviewing. We get to take a peek inside of his world and learn about his beginnings on the east coast, what he learned early on in his DJ career, and how if you don't access to opportunities you can definitely create them for yourself!
This week we got out of Phoenix and drove the short trip to Tucson to interview DJ Herm. Herm is born and raised in South Tucson. He so graciously invited us into his home and allowed us to talk his ear off for hours on end. This interview was really important to us since we want to emphasize the community in AZ not just Phoenix. Herm was able to give us a bit of background on himself such as how he got into DJing, why he at times has been shy to the term, paying your dues, what being a working class DJ is like, sneakers, and many other things this short paragraph will do no justice to. We really are grateful and love every story we're able capture but this one was a little extra fun. We love connecting with people that have respect and love for their own community and Herm truly embodies that plus he has the best business cards around made by @packertacktrain as well as an action figure gifted to him by Besouro. Main Topic: This week we have a mover, a shaker, a former candy kid raver- Mo Cha Cha! She is 1/3 of RoseWax Vinyl Club and a part of the Phoenix Fridas. From our previous interview we got to know Mo and learn a bit of her background. We delve more in to her history and she schools us a bit on the former rave scene, her time as a promoter, how art and music has helped her navigate through tragedy and so much more! Instagram: @Moni_Mochacha_Mata / @RoseWaxVinylClub Every Wednesday catch Mo at JoBot Coffee hosting her show and also on KDIF on once a month.
Main Topic: This week we interview Monica Robles of Lowrider Sundays. Some of you may be familiar with Lowrider Sundays as it's gained a big following amongst many soul collectors around the world. Monica discusses what's kept her into record collecting and music all of these years, why it's important to know your worth, and many other topics. I enjoy each episode but this one had been in the works for a minute. I've been following the adventures of Moni and Lowrider Sundays for a few years. Seeing her having fun and paving her own way has not only made a big impact on myself but many of the women I've talked with around the valley.
Main Topic: This week we discuss whether or not it's possible to separate the art from the artist.
Main Topic: This week we interview Jesse who many in the soul community know as Milky_Loks. Although Jesse is a fan of music in general, his heart belongs to soul. Not only do we talk about why he loves the genre so much but he gives us his take as to why oldies and soul go hand in hand with lowrider culture.
Main Topic: There was a slight delay but we're back and here to discuss some events around the valley that inspired us and our recent pickups. We'll be back next week with no delay! IG: JustKeepSpinningPodcast Email: JustKeepSpinningPodcast@gmail.com Listen, subscribe, rate, and review on: Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Play/Podcats, Deezer, Castbox, Stsitcher, Audioboom and wherever podcasts are available.
Main Topic: This week we interview one of the record clubs based in the valley, RoseWax Vinyl Club. They're an ever growing bunch of ladies with two chapters one in AZ and the other in NM. What's nice is each member has their own personality and opinion but what they do share is their love of music. Instagram: RoseWaxVinylClub You can catch their RoseWax Vinyl Club radio show on the first Sunday of the month on the south phoenix radio station, 102.9LPFM. They're the owners and operators of the company and have been featured by Turntable Lab, Pitchfork, HHV.DE and DJ City. They talk about their days growing up in El Paso, what lead them to Phoenix and the creation of the company as well as shed light on how to keep moving forward in the face of adversity and so much other wisdom. We've always been a fan of their products but being able to hear about all of the passion and time that goes into each adapter definitely sparks a new sense of admiration and respect into what they're providing. This is just a year end wrap up talking about the things we learned this year about our community!
Main Topic: This week we interview DJ My God Complex (Ken) of the Basement Tapes Phx crew and radio show on radiophoenix.org. Ken is a transplant from Detroit and he's just one of those people who absolutely loves music. I suppose that's something you'd expect from an individual that hails from a city with a strong musical identity but don't let the promo or his roots lead you to assume he's only of one mind. In this interview we cover Ken's days working at record stores and how he crossed paths with some Detroit legends, why he thinks a rap act will have a Vegas residency, as well as how he's always known the music of Detroit but why he began to have a new appreciation for it as he got older. Instagram: @djmygodcomplex / @basementtapesphx Tune in: Basement Tapes Radio every Thursday 9p - 10p on RadioPhoenix.org . Main Topic: There's many things I could say about this interview. We learned and laughed so much. Julian was born raised in Phoenix and has loved and been collecting music his whole life. A big reason we started the podcast was to gather stories from around Arizona because we feel like there's a lack of documentation. It was so wonderful talking to Julian not only about many places that have changed or aren't around but his own history and experiences here. Thank you to Julian for his time and for Grand Avenue Records for opening their doors and letting us record in the store. Main Topic: We're back and we interview Aaron, an artist and long time record collector. Aaron shares some history on party crew culture in his home state, how he ended up hanging out at the infamous Dischord House, and why he felt a natural progression from the punk to electronic music scene in his life. This is definitely one of those episodes were you can feel the good vibes in your ears. We talk about our experiences at each of them and cover the awesome conversations we had while digging. Email Inquiries: JustKeepSpinningPodcast@gmail.com IG: JustKeepSpinningPodcast
Main Topic: This episode is for all the clout chasing gatekeepers. After all is said and done you should listen to and dig for music you really enjoy. Music can be a powerful tool that brings people together and it's often egos that can get in the way of that. Just because there's an audience for something doesn't mean we should waste our time entertaining it. Instagram: JustKeepSpinningPodcast Email Inquiries: JustKeepSpinningPodcast@gmail.com
Main topic: This week almost didn't happen because one of us was pretty sick but we still made it! In this episode we do a Community Recap. This is such a beautiful episode that I'm so proud to have been a part of. Each episode is a learning experience and we're so thankful for every opportunity. One of the podcast bucket lists was to have Stinkweeds represented on an episode. Stinkweeds has been around for 30 years and has contributed to keeping the culture alive in Phoenix. Kimber Lanning, the owner of Stinkweeds, was kind enough to open her doors and lend us Dario. Dario is a long time Stinkweeds employee who really has a love of music. He discusses why his preferred medium for listening to music is records, why elitism is not a good look, his thoughts on women who collect, and what he hopes people take away from their experience when they visit the store. Main Topic: This week we invaded Palabras Bookstore (thanks Rosie) with 3 of the 5 members of Emby Alexander: Michael, Austin, and Jorge. They're a band based out of Phoenix (with the exception of Austin. Hey Seattle!). They've gotten a ton of comparisons but if I had to attach a label I'd go with experimental indie (vs. indie experimental). We discuss how they get creative on tour not just on stage but in the kitchen, their latest singles, the growing pains of gentrification in Phoenix and how it can affect creativity, the lost art of the visual, and how creating the movie soundtrack for Chameleon (written and directed by Trevvor Riley, 2017) differed from creating an album for the band.
