Welcome to the Podcast of Southwest Bible Fellowship in Tempe, Arizona. WHO ARE WE? • We are a group of people who are committed to living the grace life as set forth by the apostle of the Gentiles, the Apostle Paul. • We come together to study our Bibles, and yes, we believe we have God's perfect Word in the King James Bible. It and it alone is our final authority in all matters of faith and practice! • We do not come together and study our Bibles for the intent of being smarter than others. We understand that knowledge for the sake of knowledge is purely vain and serves no Godly purpose. • We do come together and study our Bibles for the intent of knowing our Lord Jesus Christ and the power of His resurrection. (Philippians 3:10) • We do come together and study our Bibles to understand that we have been crucified with Christ; nevertheless we live; yet not us, but Christ liveth in us: and the life which we now live in the flesh, we live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved us and gave himself for us. (Galatians 2:20) • We do come together and study our Bibles to understand that because Jesus Christ shed His blood for us and we should not live for ourselves but for Him, who died for us and rose again. (2 Cor. 5:15) • We do not claim to have attained to these lofty goals, but we press toward the mark of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Hugh Hallman, Attorney, Educator, and former Mayor of Tempe, joins Seth in studio for the full hour to each a pastrami sandwich, discuss the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Hugh shares the real history about Gavrilo Princip, the assassin, and how he ended up enjoying a sandwich at a deli in Sarajevo. This leads to a discussion about the consequences of failing to educate ourselves about our history and the principles of democracy. They also discuss the contents of the now-public personal diary entries of former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Anthony Fauci. Seth and Hugh highlight the need to understand the egotistic characteristics of great leaders like Alexander, Caesar, and Napoleon, and how they can threaten a democracy when seen in individuals like Dr. Fauci. They also discuss the failure of the education system to teach these essential lessons, leading to a generation of citizens who are ill-equipped to recognize the dangers of tyranny and the importance of civic virtue. The conversation also touches on the role of Dr. Fauci in shaping public opinion and the media's complicity in promoting his narrative, highlighting the consequences of failing to question authority and the importance of a free press in a democratic society.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What keeps a faith vibrant after four decades of ministry? That unexpected question, asked by a young church leader in Baltimore after a discussion on archaeology and the early church, became the catalyst for one of the most important chapters I've written in Missiological Theology. In this episode of The 10-Minute Ephesiologist, I explore what I have come to call missiological spirituality—a way of life that begins not with spiritual practices alone, but with the Triune God who continually speaks and acts. Rather than reducing spirituality to knowledge, experience, or ministry activity, I propose a rhythm of curiosity, discovery, reflection, wonder, and participation that draws us ever deeper into God's perichoretic life and mission. If you've ever wondered why some faith grows stale while other faith remains vibrant, this conversation may help you ask two life-changing questions: What is God saying? What is God doing? Keywords: missiological spirituality, missiology, Triune God, Trinity, perichoresis, perichoretic mission, missiological theology, curiosity, discovery, reflection, wonder, participation, spiritual formation, Christian spirituality, theology, archaeology, New Testament archaeology, archaeology and the Bible, ecclesiology, mission of God, missio Dei, discipleship, church planting, theological education, discernment, God speaks, God acts, Kingdom of God, early church, Ephesiology, Michael T. Cooper Key Takeaways Why one simple question in Baltimore reshaped my understanding of spirituality. Why spirituality must begin with the missionary nature of the Triune God. How God's self-revelation through His words and His works forms the foundation of Christian spirituality. The fivefold rhythm of Curiosity → Discovery → Reflection → Wonder → Participation. Why theology without wonder becomes intellectualism. Why wonder without participation becomes emotionalism. Why ministry itself can become mechanical if it is no longer sustained by ongoing curiosity about God's activity. How archaeology, Scripture, culture, and everyday life continually invite us to discern God's presence and mission. Why the Christian life is best understood not as a ladder to climb, but as a lifelong spiral into deeper communion with God and fuller participation in His mission. Pick up Dr. Cooper’s latest book Religions, politics, and education shaped the cultural world of Asia Minor where a new faith emerged that would change history. Gods, Emperors, Philosophers, and a New Movement uncovers how the earliest Christians navigated—and often disrupted and adapted—the dominant forces of their age. Drawing on decades of research, fieldwork, and teaching, Michael T. Cooper takes readers beneath the surface of Ephesos, Smyrna, Pergamon, and other cities to reveal how temples, inscriptions, and civic spaces illuminate the missionary impulse of the first Christians. Far from being silent, the archaeological record testifies to their resilience, creativity, and bold proclamation of the gospel in a world saturated with competing loyalties. This is more than history. By examining how the early church encountered powerful religious traditions, political ideologies, and systems of education, today's missionaries and church leaders gain fresh vision for gospel engagement in their own pluralistic and contested contexts. The dynamics that shaped mission in the first centuries—identity, power, worldview, and cultural disruption—remain central to how the good news advances today. This book is an invitation to rediscover the mission of God in the archaeological record and to discern its enduring relevance for faithful witness in the twenty-first century. In this winsome study, Ephesiology offers readers a comprehensive view of the empowering work of the Holy Spirit in the most significant city of the New Testament, and compels us to ask the question: how can we effectively connect Christ to our culture? “Masterfully handling the book of Ephesians and using its content as a definitive guide, Michael Cooper lays a theologically strong foundation that is both corrective and directive to disciple making movements. The principles he gleans from the book of Ephesians and related texts, help to ensure the on-going multiplication and maturation of a movement. In this episode of The Criminologist Podcast, host Joseph Arvidson welcomes Dianna Kalandros, Director of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council in Coconino County, Arizona, for a conversation about collaboration, innovation, and what it means to humanize the justice system in practical ways. Dianna discusses the role of Criminal Justice Coordinating Councils, the importance of bringing stakeholders together, and how local systems can respond to long-standing challenges in probation, courts, corrections, and community justice through creativity and collaboration. A central theme of the conversation is the shift from simply asking, "How do we respond when people fail?" to asking, "How do we create more opportunities for people to succeed?" Joe and Dianna explore incentive-based approaches, removing barriers, supervision fees, justice system collaboration, and the importance of recognizing progress. Dianna also shares the impact of the Client of the Month project and how it helped humanize individuals involved in the justice system for local stakeholders. The episode also touches on innovative efforts such as the Justice Bus, broader CJCC work in Coconino County, and examples of how communities can rethink access, accountability, and support. This conversation is especially relevant for probation, parole, pretrial services, courts, corrections, reentry, behavioral health, and justice-system leaders interested in improving outcomes through collaboration, practical innovation, and a more human-centered approach. (Philippians 3:14) You can donate to this ministry through www.butnow.org and the PayPal button on the homepage.

Step into Episode 220 of On The Delo as Delo sits down with Akram Abdallah and Mohamed — the entrepreneurial force behind Laymoon Café, Tempe's buzzing Palestinian-Syrian café bringing Middle Eastern hospitality, culture, and flavor to the heart of the ASU community. From a chance road-trip conversation about an available space to opening one of the most talked-about new concepts in the Valley, this story is about bold moves, deep roots, and a team who built something beautiful before they even had a name for it.Delo digs into the origin stories, the chaos of launch week, supply chain realities, a 40-person staff puzzle, the significance of operating next to one of Arizona's most iconic mosques, and what it means to create a true "third space" rooted in Middle Eastern hospitality. Twenty-two-year-old Mercedes Marianna Vega left her Tempe, Arizona apartment for work on the evening of April 16, 2023. Surveillance cameras captured her walking through her apartment parking garage just moments before she disappeared. Hours later, firefighters responding to a burning car along Interstate 10 made a horrifying discovery. According to investigators, Mercedes had been abducted, tortured, and her death became one of Arizona's most disturbing recent homicide investigations. As detectives retraced Mercedes' final hours, they uncovered a connection to an armed robbery three years earlier. Mercedes had identified a suspect and was scheduled to testify in court the very next day. Prosecutors now allege her killing was part of a plan to prevent that testimony, leading investigators through fingerprints, surveillance footage, phone records, and evidence spanning multiple states. The robbery case has since resulted in convictions, while the separate murder case remains ongoing. Prosecutors have charged multiple defendants, all of whom have pleaded not guilty, and the allegations have not yet been tested at trial. As the case continues to develop, investigators and Mercedes' family are still seeking justice for the 22-year-old whose life was cut tragically short. Learn more about your ad choices. In this summer hiatus episode of the Ephesiology Podcast, Michael and Andrew welcome—or perhaps ambush—Dave Brunelle into a conversation about spiritual formation, discipleship, and the life of Christ being formed in us. With humor, stories, and a few “under the bus” moments, the episode introduces Dave's journey from public safety to church planting, mentoring, global ministry, and his work with Telos|GO and Ephesiology Master Classes. The conversation previews an upcoming fall series on spiritual formation, exploring why Christian maturity cannot be reduced to time, knowledge, or behavior modification. Instead, formation is the Spirit's ongoing work of shaping believers into Christlikeness so that Jesus lives his life through his people. Keywords: Spiritual formation, discipleship, Christlikeness, Christoformity, Ephesiology, Telos|GO, Ephesiology Master Classes, Dave Brunelle, Michael Cooper, Andrew Johnson, church planting, missiology, movement leadership, Holy Spirit, union with Christ, Christian maturity, spiritual disciplines, Christian community, theological education, discipleship environments, formation in Christ Key Takeaways Spiritual formation is the ongoing journey of being shaped into Christ's image. Dave describes formation as believers yielding to and cooperating with the Holy Spirit so that Christ is increasingly formed in them. Discipleship and spiritual formation are deeply connected. The episode suggests that discipleship can be understood as an activity and environment where formation takes place. Christian maturity is not simply “time in grade.” Knowing Bible verses, giving the right answers, or having many years of church experience does not automatically make someone a mature disciple. Formation is more than behavior modification. Dave contrasts a merely ethical or mechanical approach to discipleship with the supernatural, spiritual, and mystical work of Christ living in his followers. The goal is Christlikeness. Whether we call it discipleship or spiritual formation, the central aim is that believers grow to look like Jesus and participate in his ongoing work in the world. Community matters. Formation happens through spiritual habits, disciplines, and communities that become nurseries and crucibles for the life of Christ. This episode previews the fall series. Ephesiology will return with a deeper conversation on spiritual formation approached in an “ephesiological” way—attending to Scripture, mission, community, and the movement of God. Because these are supra-cultural principles, they are applicable anywhere in the world.” Marvin J. Newell, Staff Missiologist, Missio Nexus, Author of Crossing Cultures in Scripture Buy This Now! There is a murderous crime spree happening right under—and perhaps inside—our noses. Killer microbes armed with weapons are eviscerating, assassinating, and detonating their fellow microbes. And the newest culprit? A protist that morphs into a cannibilastic supergiant when times get tough. Host Flora Lichtman talks with Glen D'Souza and Ben Larson, two detectives who study these micro-murders. They chat about why microbes kill, how they choose their victims, and whether we can harness those weapons for good. Guests: Dr. Glen D'Souza is a microbiologist and assistant professor at Arizona State University in Tempe. Dr. Ben Larson is an assistant professor and cell biologist at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York. Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com.
