Today it's time to prepare for your summer nuptials with a show titled I Do Take Thee...The Wedding Playlist.
Some producers make beats. Pete Rock built a blueprint. On this episode of Unglossy, Bun B, Jeffrey Sledge, and Tom Frank sit down with the legendary producer, DJ, and MC for a wide-ranging conversation that runs from his Mount Vernon roots all the way to the present moment. Pete takes us back to coming up under Heavy D, spinning on WBLS next to Marley Marl at 13 years old, and the basement studio where Biggie, Run DMC, Nas, and half of hip hop passed through. He breaks down the stories behind the classics: how "T.R.O.Y." came out of real grief and taught him to treat music like medicine, how Jam Master Jay tapped out the drums on "Down with the King," and how he ended up singing the hook on "The World Is Yours." Plus the new De La Soul album, his love of comics, and why, after 53 years without a chip, these Knicks have him out of his head in the best way. It is a masterclass, a memory lap, and a love letter to New York, all in one. Follow us on Instagram @UnglossyPod to join the conversation, and get early access plus live recordings and more at Merrick Studios+. Unglossy is produced and distributed by Merrick Studios, where culture takes the mic.

California voters approved Proposition 12 by a decisive 63% margin, establishing minimum space requirements for farm animals and restricting the sale of pork, eggs, and veal produced from animals confined in spaces smaller than those standards. For pork producers, the law effectively prohibits the sale of meat from pigs born to sows housed in gestation crates that fail to meet California’s requirements. State regulators and many pork processors have maintained that California’s pork demand can be supplied under Proposition 12, although compliance costs may contribute to somewhat higher prices—much as California consumers often pay premiums for products produced under stricter standards. Opponents of Proposition 12 vowed to challenge the law all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. In 2023, however, the Court upheld the measure in a closely divided 5–4 decision.Writing for the majority, Justice Neil Gorsuch concluded that states have broad authority to regulate products sold within their borders, even when those regulations affect producers in other states. The Court rejected arguments that the Constitution’s dormant Commerce Clause bars statesfrom adopting non-discriminatory laws simply because they impose compliance costs on a national industry. While the Constitution prohibits economic protectionism, the Court held that it does not prevent voters from restricting products they believe are produced through practices they consider cruel or unethical, provided the law applies equally to in-state and out-of-state businesses.Having failed in the courts, opponents have shifted their efforts to Congress. Language included in proposed Farm Bill legislation—often referred to by supporters as the “Save Our Bacon” provision—would limit states’ ability to impose production standards on agricultural products sold within their borders. Critics argue that the provision would effectively overturn Proposition 12 and similar state laws. The debate has attracted national attention. In a New York Times opinion essay titled “America’s Livestock Gulag,” columnist Nicholas Kristof argued that “the pork industry istrying to pull a fast one with this year’s farm bill,” citing polling that found strong public opposition to housing pregnant sows in gestation crates. A common misconception is that gestation crates are necessary to prevent sows from crushing piglets. That concern is generally addressed through the use of farrowing crates, which are used for a relatively short period around birth and weaning. Gestation crates, by contrast, typically confine pregnant sows in narrow metal enclosures for their 114- day pregnancy. Many pork producers in Europe have adapted to alternative housing systemsfollowing restrictions or bans on gestation crates. The question now moves from the courtroom to Capitol Hill: Should Congress override the will of voters and the Supreme Court’s ruling through the Farm Bill, or should states retain the authority to establish animal welfare standards for products sold within their borders? For listeners seeking a broader and balanced discussion of pig housing systems, we also recommend our earlier conversation with Dr. Pete Lammers of the University of Wisconsin–Platteville, who explores the practical, economic, and animal welfare dimensions of providing space for pigs.

On tap for this episode of Vinyl Community Podcasts, Beer & Vinyl host Alex (from Columbus) sits down with local record store owner Thomas Stanley of Stanley's Records for a conversation rooted in passion, purpose, and community. Thomas shares his journey into vinyl—how a deep love for records turned into opening his own shop—and what it really takes to build a record store in today's evolving collecting landscape. Beyond the store, Thomas has become a driving force in the Columbus vinyl scene, leading the charge in organizing record fairs that bring collectors, diggers, and music fans together under one roof. They also preview the upcoming May 16th record show at Ohio Brewing Company in Columbus, breaking down what attendees can expect (free parking, free admission, two rooms full of LP's, 45's, CD's, etc.), why these events matter more than ever, and how these shows continue to grow the local vinyl community in positive ways. If you are a seasoned collector or just getting started, this episode is a great look at the people putting in the work to keep vinyl culture thriving at the local level.

Welcome to Episode 329 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the most complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world. Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we discuss this and all of our podcast episodes. This week we start are continuing our series reviewing Cicero's "Academic Questions" from an Epicurean perspective. We are focusing first on what is referred to as Book One, which provides an overview of the issues that split Plato's Academy and gives us an overview of the philosophical issues being dealt with at the time of Epicurus. This week will focus on the ending of Section 9. Our text will come fromCicero - Academic Questions - Yonge We'll likely stick with Yonge primarily, but we'll also refer to the Rackam translation here:Cicero On Nature Of Gods Academica Loeb Rackham : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet ArchiveQuote from Academic Questions - Yonge IX. This was the first philosophy handed down to them by Plato. And if you like I will explain to you those discussions which have originated in it. Indeed, said I, we shall be glad if you will; and I can answer for Atticus as well as for myself. You are quite right, said he; for the doctrine both of the Peripatetics and of the old Academy is most admirably explained. Aristotle, then, was the first to undermine the doctrine of species (forms), which I have just now mentioned, and which Plato had embraced in a wonderful manner; so that he even affirmed that there was something divine in it. But Theophrastus, a man of very delightful eloquence, and of such purity of morals that his probity and integrity were notorious to all men, broke down more vigorously still the authority of the old school; for he stripped virtue of its beauty, and made it powerless, by denying that to live happily depended solely on it. For Strato, his pupil, although a man of brilliant abilities, must still be excluded entirely from that school; for, having deserted that most indispensable part of philosophy which is placed in virtue and morals, and having devoted himself wholly to the investigation of nature, he by that very conduct departs as widely as possible from his companions. But Speusippus and Xenocrates, who were the earliest supporters of the system and authority of Plato,— and, after them, Polemo and Crates, and at the same time Crantor,— being all collected together in the Academy, diligently maintained those doctrines which they had received from their predecessors. Zeno and Arcesilas had been diligent attenders on Polemo; but Zeno, who preceded Arcesilas in point of time, and argued with more subtilty, and was a man of the greatest acuteness, attempted to correct the system of that school. And, if you like, I will explain to you the way in which he set about that correction, as Antiochus used to explain it. Indeed, said I, I shall be very glad to hear you do so; and you see that Pomponius intimates the same wish.
In this episode of Mark and Pete, we turn to a story that is, on the face of it, faintly ridiculous and yet, like most such things, not without its lessons.Somewhere in Orkney, a small supermarket placed an order. Not an unusual event. Not a dramatic one. Just a routine bit of stock management, the sort of quiet background activity that keeps the modern world humming along. And then, somehow whether by slip of the finger, misplaced decimal, or simple human error that order became something else entirely.Bananas. Far too many bananas.Crates upon crates, far beyond what a small island population could reasonably absorb before nature began to take its course. And that is the quiet tension here, because bananas do not wait. They ripen, they soften, they insist upon being dealt with. Abundance, suddenly, becomes a problem. There is something almost biblical in that. Not abundance itself Scripture is not shy about blessing but abundance without proportion, without wisdom, without timing. The kind that turns from provision into pressure before you've quite had time to notice. We reflect on Proverbs 21:5, where the plans of the diligent lead somewhere steady and sure, while haste has a way of multiplying consequences. This is not a story about failure, exactly. Nor even incompetence. It is something more familiar than that. A small mistake, scaled up by systems, until it becomes visible enough for everyone to see.And perhaps that is the thing. Most of life is lived in the small decisions no one notices.Until suddenly, they do.

The Country Land and Business Association, CLA, says winter flooding is putting pressure on farm finances, coming after summer drought and during a period of poor arable and milk prices. The CLA's Deputy President, Joe Evans, describes driving past 'hundreds of acres' of 'prime arable land' under water on the outskirts of Worcester. He tells Anna Hill of instances where arable farmers in Somerset have stopped growing crops because of repeated flooding. He believes that farmers could be more resilient, and help protect nearby communities, if they were given the right policy and regulatory support. The Government has said it plans to end the use of sow farrowing crates under proposals in the new Animal Welfare Bill. These narrow pens are used in indoor pig units, and they confine sows during birth and suckling, for around a month. Their purpose is to prevent sows killing piglets by accidentally lying on them. We visit a farm in East Yorkshire which has been trialling alternative systems for 15 years. This week we're exploring how artificial intelligence, AI, could help farmers improve efficiency, and reduce the environment footprint of producing food. Today, a project combining AI with a camera which 'sees' things in a different way to the human eye, to understand how plants are behaving. It could eventually help farmers use nitrogen fertiliser much more precisely.Presenter: Anna Hill Producer: Sarah Swadling

On this hour of All Sides, we're discussing why all farmers are not on board, and why more food companies, from McDonald's to Costco, are adopting ethical animals.
In this in-depth conversation, Darryl McDaniels sits down with Metal Walt to explore the heavy metal and hard rock roots that have been part of his musical identity since childhood. Growing up in New York City, DMC discovered rock and metal through radio, hearing bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest at a formative age. He explains how those sounds were already embedded in early hip-hop culture, from DJs digging through crates to the attitude and energy that shaped Run-DMC from the very beginning. The discussion revisits key moments such as “Rock Box” and “Walk This Way,” why rock was always part of Run-DMC's DNA, and how those records opened creative doors that still matter today. DMC also talks about his decision to actively create rock and metal music himself, leading to projects like HellRaisers and his 2026 solo metal single “She Gets Me High.” Additional topics include NYC hardcore roots, playing with Agnostic Front, sharing stages with Sammy Hagar, opening for Lou Reed, and how creativity, authenticity, and curiosity continue to guide his work. 00:00 Show Open & Pre-Roll Tease 04:23 What Music Sounded Like in DMC's House Growing Up 05:58 Discovering Rock on WABC and the First Metal Obsession (Black Sabbath) 09:11 Rock and Early Hip-Hop Culture — DJs, Crates, and Crossover 11:23 “Rock Box” and Why Rock Was Always in Run-DMC's DNA 14:16 “Walk This Way” — History, Impact, and the Permission Moment 25:25 When DMC Decided to Start Making Rock Music 28:10 DMC and the HellRaisers — Live Reactions and Reality 31:25 Rock DNA Across Classic Run-DMC Songs (King of Rock, It's Tricky, Mary, Mary, Why You Buggin') 36:17 “She Gets Me High” — DMC's Solo Metal Direction and Lineup 47:13 Hardcore Roots — Agnostic Front, NYC, and Underground Energy 56:22 Legacy, Creativity, and What DMC Is About Today 01:09:22 Wrap-Up & Where to Follow DMC Learn more about your ad choices.
