Episode 67 – Rex Kudo is one of the most influential producers in modern hip-hop. His big break came when he co-wrote/produced Post Malone's “White Iverson”, and from there, he's worked with Lil Uzi Vert, A$AP Rocky, Juice WRLD, J. Cole, DJ Khaled, Skrillex, M.I.A., Mac Miller, Roddy Ricch, Future, Young Thug, The Weeknd, Trippie Redd, and has even produced alongside Rick Rubin. Lately, I've been spending more time with Rex, and I get the feeling he's becoming the next Rick Rubin. He's got this energy, this perspective on music and life that's just different. He's inspiring, community-driven, and one of the most genuinely good people in the game. But last month, he unfortunately lost his house and studio, burned down in the Pacific Palisades fires. Instead of letting it destroy him, he's kept moving forward with pure optimism for the future and realizing how lucky he already is. That really hit me. In this episode, we talk about his journey, his process, the hits, the lessons from working with legends, making new legends, and how he's pushing through one of the toughest moments of his life. Rex is one of those guys you just root for, and I'm stoked to share his story with you. Hope you dig this convo with the great Rex Kudo. ‘Go with Elmo Lovano' is a weekly podcast where Elmo interviews creatives and entrepreneurs in music on HOW they push forward every day, got where they are in their careers, manage their personal lives, and share lessons learned and their most important insights. What Are We Doing!?
Donald Trump, Elon Musk & The Salute Seen Around the World | What are We Doing Podcast #174

What Are We Doing!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 25, 2025 62:36

Welcome to Episode 174 of the What Are We Doing podcast! We're kicking off 2025 in true chaotic fashion, and this week's episode is packed with more absurdity than ever. From TikTok bans to basketball shorts at the Presidential inauguration, and the return of Donald Trump to the Oval Office, we're here to dissect it all. If you thought the first 72 hours of the new administration couldn't get any wilder, buckle up, because it's been a ride. Let's start with the TikTok ban. For 14 hours, the app was offline, and while most people slept through it, I used the opportunity for a “romantic” detox getaway with Mags. Was the ban just a publicity stunt? Probably. But hey, it's back, and Trump is already taking credit. Speaking of credit, can we talk about John Fetterman's wardrobe choices at the inauguration? I'm all for comfort, but showing up in basketball shorts and a hoodie to a formal event is pushing it. Can we collectively agree to make “Pants for Pennsylvania” a thing? Trump wasted no time signing executive orders that have everyone talking. From ending birthright citizenship to withdrawing from the Paris Agreement (again), he's on a roll. And let's not forget his decision to pardon all of the January 6th rioters. Yes, all of them. Oh, and he also pardoned Ross Ulbricht, the guy behind the Silk Road. Because why not? If that wasn't enough, Trump also made Elon Musk the head of Dogecoin at a federal level. How did he land this gig? By hosting a multimillion-dollar fundraiser at his mansion with a mirrored floor. Qualifications? Optional. The new administration is shaping up to be the Avengers of inexperience. Trump's picks for key positions range from an auctioneer running the IRS to a TV doctor leading health initiatives. It's like he spun a wheel of LinkedIn profiles and said, “Close enough.” And speaking of chaos, I managed to snag a ticket to the inaugural ball, thanks to Tim Dillon. It was an unforgettable night of cringe-worthy entertainment. Between Theo Von falling out of his chair and Billy Ray Cyrus attempting to sing Old Town Road a cappella, it was pure gold. Also, Trump launched a meme coin called TrumpCoin, which has already tanked. Shocking. On a more personal note, the recent snowstorms have been wreaking havoc on the East Coast. Even Florida got snow! My son's school tried to enforce a virtual snow day for kindergarten, but we weren't having it. He was outside enjoying the snow like a normal kid. Meanwhile, in Texas, a young cancer survivor made headlines for creating a hilariously morbid snowman involving swords and fake blood. What are we doing? Switching gears, let's talk about Trisha Paytas. If you told me a few years ago that Trisha would become the queen of 2025, I'd have laughed, but here we are. Between her sold-out “Trish Era” tour, a rumored Skims collab, and a one-night Broadway show, she's thriving. It's amazing to see her transformation from internet chaos to powerhouse success. Love really does change people, doesn't it? And for the drama lovers, stay tuned for next week when we dive into the Blake Lively vs. Justin Baldoni saga. Blake calling herself “Khaleesi” in texts? Big yikes. This has all the makings of an Amber Heard/Johnny Depp 2.0 situation. Once we sort through the 90-page court deposition, we'll break it all down. It's been a wild start to the year, and it's only getting crazier. From executive orders to snow day drama and celebrity chaos, there's no shortage of things to rant about. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. What's your take on Fetterman's hoodie, Trump's executive orders, or Trisha Paytas' comeback? Let's discuss! Thank you for tuning in to another episode of the What Are We Doing podcast. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more weekly madness. If you don't have a Valentine this year, don't worry—I've got you. Until next week, peace out, and as always… what are we doing?

The song of the summer 2024

It's our annual look at the contenders for the song of the summer. There's no formula for writing a song of the summer, the same way that you can't guarantee a Christmas classic, but there are some ground rules that seem to apply for most of the songs in contention every year.As noted by Mark Savage's The secrets of a hit summer song piece, some key things a song has to be simple (like Whigfield's 'Saturday Night'), It should make you feel like you're on holiday ('Pon De Replay' / 'Club Tropicana'), novelty is good, whether that means meme-friendly, silly ('Macarena') or a novel mix of styles (like Old Town Road's mix of country and rap) but most importantly it should be released before the summer, ideally mid April - early May latest. We added a few more rules of our own - including mentions of food and drink are good, controversy can be helpful, titillation can work, melancholy, anticipation and the song's unquantifiable repeatable vibe that doesn't grate over months of listening via rooftops, out of cars, festivals, clubs and pubs. A catchy lyric is essential - are you ready to match our freak? But really the song of the summer is a nebulous accolade, and ultimately decided by too many factors to identity. This year's main contenders include Kabin Crew's 'The Spark', Sabrina Carpenter's 'Espresso', Tommy Richman's 'Million Dollar Baby', Chappell Roan's 'Good Luck Babe', Charli XCX's '360', Kendrick's 'Not Like Us' and songs from Tik-Tok memes, Billie Eilish, Jamie xx, Tinashe, Hozier, Shaboozey and more.We take them at their word and consider each for the ultimate summer medal - the song of the summer 2024. Though Beyoncé has claimed that Cowboy Carter is a 'Beyoncé album', rather than 'a country album', it's a release that definitely dips into the genre. And country music has a complex relationship with Black musicians - a few years back, Lil Nas X faced a heavy backlash from Old Town Road, which was scrapped from Billboard's country chart, triggering criticism that the reason was in part racially motivated. Yet over the last few years, country has seen a massive boom in its widespread popularity, with many large-name artists delving into the sound. So what can we expect next, and why is it significant that Black artists are making music in the space? In this episode of The Briefing, Bension Siebert speaks with LiSTNR journalist Loren Howarth to find out.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 14: Eurovision Behind The Iron Curtain   25:00 Dr. Dean Vuletic (Historian, “Intervision: Popular Music and Politics in Eastern Europe”)   40:28 Chris Molanphy (Chart Expert, Host of Slate's Hit Parade, Author, "Old Town Road")    This week we're talking about the Intervision Song Contest - the Eurovision equivalent organized by communist governments during the cold war. Putin has been making noises about restarting the ISC, but as we talk about, he fundamentally misunderstands the original festival. Intervision was a liberalizing force, run by reformers working to open their countries to the rest of the world. We discuss what Intervision is and why it's so often misremembered.   Then we talk to a true Eurovision and Intervision expert, Dean Vuletic, a historian specializing in Eastern Europe, whose work has focused on the history of Intervision.   Finally, we sit down with Chris Molanphy, the host of Slate's Hit Parade, and author of Old Town Road. Chris is an expert on the American pop charts, and brings his knowledge of American music trends to analyzing songs in the ISC -- as we try to figure out how different the songs coming out of the Eastern Bloc were from their contemporaneous Western equivalents. Former President Donald Trump scored a record-setting win in the Iowa caucuses on Monday with his rivals languishing far behind, a victory that affirmed his grip on the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. In what was the lowest-turnout caucus in a quarter-century, participants endured life-threatening cold and dangerous driving conditions to meet in hundreds of schools, churches and community centers across the state. But those who ventured out delivered a roughly 30-point win for Trump that smashed the record for a contested Iowa Republican caucus with a margin of victory exceeding Bob Dole's nearly 13-percentage-point victory in 1988. A deep freeze has gripped Chicago, with temperatures plunging to an Arctic minus 32 degrees Fahrenheit over the weekend. As a result, Tesla owners are becoming deeply frustrated with their vehicles not being able to charge or hold a charge, even after a trip to a Supercharger. Rapper Montero Lamar Hill, also known as Lil Nas X, apologized Monday amid backlash to recent material he released that prompted accusations of "mocking Christianity." "I know I messed up really bad this time," Hill, who became famous for his 2018 hit single "Old Town Road," said in an Instagram video. "I can act unbothered all I want, but it's definitely taken a mental toll on me. I'm not some evil demon guy trying to destroy everybody's values and stuff like that. It was also unexpectedly huge—a record 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100—and controversial, as Billboard magazine pulled the song from its Hot Country Songs chart, prompting a reckoning on race and the very definition of country music. “Old Town Road” wasn't just a reckoning—it was a culmination. Country music's had a massive year. Seriously, not since 1958 have we seen so many country tunes topping the Hot 100 in a single year – and it's not been without its share of controversy. Leading this country music revival? Morgan Wallen, for starters. He bounced back from being shunned for dropping a racial slur with his number one single “Last Night.” Then there's Jason Aldean with “Try That in a Small Town,” a song and music video that which unsubtly lynching references. Next up, newcomer Oliver Anthony Music dropped “Richmond North of Richmond,” weaving in QAnon references and welfare shaming into a track largely about government distrust. On a lighter but still contentious note, Luke Combs covered the mega 90s hit “Fast Car,” turning Tracy Chapman into the first black woman with a number one country hit. And let's not forget Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves' beautiful duet “I Remember Everything” about a past romance, which also climbed to the top. Many of these songs have just been nominated for Grammys, including “Last Night,” “Fast Car,” and “I Remember Everything.” When all this started happening, we were scratching our heads. Country songs topping the Hot 100? Sure, but not this many in quick succession. Something felt different. And we think we've finally figured it out after diving into Chris Molanphy's new book: Old Town Road. Chris, a music and charts critic, author of Slate's Why Is This Song No. 1 column, and host of the excellent music podcast Hit Parade, explores country music's chart history in his latest book “Old Town Road,” part of Duke's Single Series. He zeroes in on Lil Nas X's 2018 “Old Town Road” and its 2019 Billy Ray Cyrus-amped remix as a case study. So, to get the lowdown on 2023's country chart toppers, we've got to rewind to 2018 and re-examine “Old Town Road” with Chris Molanphy's insights. Then, Dana, Julia, and Stephen explore the world of Letterboxd, the self-proclaimed “Goodreads of movies” that may be the only positive social media platform left. Finally, the trio is joined by Extreme Friend of the Pod Chris Molanphy to discuss his wonderful new book, Old Town Road, which considers Lil Nas X's debut single as pop artifact, chart phenomenon, and cultural watershed. In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel asks: what's the deal with long movies? Are today's films getting longer or is it just a figment of our imagination?  Email us at culturefest@slate.com.  Endorsements: Dana: A hometown endorsement of Slate's excellent coverage of the Sam Bankman-Fried trial, specifically a piece by Nitish Pahwa entitled “The Days the Chips Fell,” which chronicles what Pahwa witnessed in the courtroom the day Bankman-Fried was found guilty. Julia: The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese's iconic 1978 concert documentary that captures the Band's legendary farewell performance in San Francisco. It depicts a very specific image of the male rockstar era, highlighting both the vanity and vulnerability of its stars. Dana also wrote about The Last Waltz for Slate in 2012!  Stephen: Taken by the retro-feel of The Holdovers' trailer, Stephen endorses the song featured in it, “Silver Joy” by Damien Jurado.  Outro music: “Go Slow” by Daniel Fridell Podcast production by Cameron Drews. Production assistance by Kat Hong.  If you enjoy this show, please consider signing up for Slate Plus. In Old Town Road (Duke University Press, 2023), Chris Molanphy considers Lil Nas X's debut single as pop artifact, chart phenomenon, and cultural watershed. “Old Town Road” was more than a massive hit, with the most weeks at No. 1 in Billboard Hot 100 history. It is also a prism through which to track the evolution of popular music consumption and the ways race influences how the music industry categorizes songs and artists. By both lionizing and satirizing genre tropes—it's a country song built from an alternative rock sample, a hip-hop song in which nobody raps, a comical song that transcends novelty, and a queer anthem—Lil Nas X troubles the very idea of genre. Ultimately, Molanphy shows how “Old Town Road” channeled decades of Americana to point the way toward our cultural future.  Rebekah Buchanan is a Professor of English and Director of English Education at Western Illinois University. In early August, Christopher Anthony Lunsford, who goes by Oliver Anthony, quietly released a song called "Rich Men North of Richmond." A week later, the folk song had rocketed to the top of the Billboard charts — a historic feat for someone with no chart history to speak of. But the ascent wasn't without controversy. The song, to some, sounded like a right-wing anthem. And it was heralded as such online by right wing pundits, and included as a part of the first question of the opening Republican presidential primary debate. But Oliver Anthony's politics, and the song's appeal, have turned out to be a little more complicated. This week, OTM correspondent Micah Loewinger sits down with Chris Molanphy, Slate's pop-chart columnist, and author of the forthcoming book "Old Town Road," to talk about how such an unlikely song rose to the top. Micah speaks to Molanphy about how the Billboard charts have gotten weirder, and more anarchic, and what "Rich Men North of Richmond" has in common with "Ballad of the Green Berets," a song released almost 60 years prior.

Luke is up north so we got our friend Travis from 93-94 A Music Podcast & Cinema 9 to sub in with Steve & Govier. Steve is fighting through that hurricane that rolled through the Carolinas. He's doing fine as you will hear. Travis is fascinated by the celebrity death culture commonly referenced on the show. That reminds Govier to say farewell to Paul Ruebens. Govier was out on the west side of the state of Michigan and he loved it. He met a person named Ram. A non-binary person who educated Govier & his wife. Travis doesn't want to talk about politics or Mitch McConnell staring off into space. Why do people in Kentucky continuously vote for him? Travis teaches us that expressing to others that he dodged a bullet when it comes to having kids may be offensive to some. The kid chatter leads to a discovery that Chazz Palminteri is alive, but unfortunately resembles Skeletor. Find out which movie was hands down the selection for best performance by Chazz. Govier is interested in a Monster's Ball/Hurly Burly mashup of I don't feel loved and I want to feel good. We got emails! Travis wishes he had emailed the show so he could answer his own fare. Mr. Pink emails us about his challenges with his boss along with a curiosity about the illusion of choice. Steve has an offering from a conservative figure that has the Jacobin stamp of approval! His name is Sohrab Ahmari. Steve gets exposed to Old Town Road for the first time ever and he is not pleased about it. The fellas end up talking about frontin' and Govier is immediately drawn to MC Breed's Ain't No Future In Your Frontin'. Travis tests his baseball knowledge by trying to figure out who Camilo Doval is. Get pissed Dave! Bob Barker died and we have to get on the record on this one. Travis had already mourned him apparently. Our friend Jamie's restaurant is alive and well, which is no easy task. Govier ponders what would have happened if Lawrence Tierney took on the role of Joe Pistone in Donnie Brasco. Al Pacino face to face with Lawrence Tierney. Govier stumbles into doo doo and then Doo Doo Brown is unleashed upon the world! What is Doo Doo Brown and what is a Doo Doo Brown espresso? Find out! We love you all! We are very pleased with our little world that we have formed together thanks to this show. This talk show has little substance to it without you listening and emailing us your thoughts. We close the show with The Biz by The Sea And Cake. If any of our nonsense provokes your thoughts, please share them with us at isitsafepod@gmail.com
