Michael Noonan, Blood Bike volunteer, discusses a new bill that aims to allow blood bikes to use bus lanes.
Melanie Finn, Entertainment and News Correspondent at the Irish Independent outlined her frustrations with the level of aggression and lack of consideration by fellow cyclists using cycle lanes.
Put your hand up if you've ever had a bus suddenly pull out in front of your car while you're driving along, minding your own beeswax. I know. It's happened to everyone. They're long things aren't they, buses? So you can be halfway past one when they pull out, and all of a sudden you're slamming on the brakes or you're pushed into the wrong lane. I don't mind admitting that until this very morning, I had assumed that buses must have had the right of way. They seem to take no prisoners. They have no mercy. They're as ruthless on the road as the All Blacks at the Cake Tin on Saturday night. But I was reading an article this morning from the Spinoff about a bunch of changes to road rules that Chris Bishop wants to enact. One of them is giving buses right of way when they're exiting bus stops. So if you're driving a car, you must yield. Give way. Slow down, or more likely, stop completely to let them out. The theory is that buses carry more passengers than cars. If we prioritise the buses, more people will get where they need to go. Productivity increases. And we're all better off. And you know what? I can get onboard with that. It makes sense, and I sort of thought that was the law anyway. But if we motorists are going to do something nice for the buses, then I want something in return. I want those stupid green bus lanes that sit empty most of the day as traffic piles up around them back. I want us to reclaim the road for the people who are actually using it. I understand the need for rush-hour/peak bus lanes. But I don't understand why they must be bus lanes 24/7 when they're 1 - not being used by buses and 2 - causing massive delays, inconvenience and lost productivity to the rest of us. The default position is that bus lanes are 24/7 unless sign posted otherwise. The one in particular that rips my nightie is in central Auckland - where most bus lanes are 24/7. Does anybody else have this problem - or am I just another selfish motorist fuming in midday traffic? LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Clare County Council has committed to conducting a safety assessment of public lighting in Ennis's lanes and laneways. It follows a call from Ennis Fianna Fáil Councillor Antoinette Baker-Bashua who claims the "current lack of adequate lighting poses significant safety concerns for residents and visitors". Ennis Municipal District says the local authority will "liaise with its public lighting maintenance contractor" to undertake a "lighting design assessment on the existing lighting provision within the laneways off the central town streets". Councillor Baker-Bashua believes women feel particularly vulnerable in certain areas.

Pro Swimmer, Author, Screenwriter, Becca Mann's journey redefines what it means to be a swimming prodigy who grows beyond the confines of early success. At just 10 years old, she completed the 15K Maui channel, becoming the youngest to do so. By her teens, she was a seven-time US National Team member and two-time national champion. But after narrowly missing Olympic qualification three times, Becca made the courageous decision to step away from competitive swimming altogether. What happened during those five years away from racing forms the emotional core of our conversation. Becca speaks candidly about needing to discover who she was beyond the lane lines. She pursued her passion for writing, earning a BFA in screenwriting from USC and working on hit shows like "The Morning Show." She traveled solo, climbed mountains, and experienced the unstructured life she'd never known during her regimented swimming career. Her path back began unexpectedly through Masters swimming at West Hollywood Aquatics, where she jumped into lane one and "almost died that first practice." Becca reveals. "I was always swimming the 1500 at Olympic trials." That return to the water sparked a realization: "How did I not swim for two years? This is what I love. This is who I am."Becca opens up about her experiences with OCD, describing how intrusive thoughts affect her and the tools she's developed to manage them. Rather than seeing her mental health challenges as obstacles, she explores how neurodivergence shapes both her athletic career and creative pursuits. Her memoir "Outside the Lanes" documents this journey with raw honesty. Now training in North Carolina with Olympic swimmer Ashley Twitchell, Becca has her sights set on qualifying for the national team and potentially even the 2028 Olympics. At the end of our conversation, when asked what word comes to mind when she's in the water, her answer is immediate and profound: "Peace."Ready to dive deeper into stories of athletic resilience and transformation? Send us a textThis week, former WorldTour pros Harry Tanfield and Sophie Wright kindly interrupted their packing for Sea Otter to hop on the podcast and discuss how they've adapted to life as rookie gravel racers with Britain's newest professional cycling team, the Ribble Outliers – including getting used to wider tyres and lower pressures (and why they're a big plus when it comes to riding on Britain's battered roads). The duo also chatted about the pressures facing British cycling at the moment for riders, organisers, and fans, Harry's ill-fated bid to set up his own road team last year, and why the Tour de France's visit could be a kick-starter for the local scene… If we can watch it on TV, of course. Oh, and why the UK's active travel approach is lightyears behind our European counterparts (yes, there was a lot covered). And in part one, Jack and Ryan are joined by road.cc founder Tony Farrelly and regular contributor Jo Burt to pay tribute to the brilliant John Stevenson, our friend and former colleague at road.cc, and an absolute titan in the world of cycling journalism for four decades, who died earlier this month.
Let's talk about fishing big rivers. For the most part, all of us here at Troutbitten are river anglers, meaning not much stillwater. Furthermore we're mostly wade anglers. We spend most of our time wading rather than floating, because we enjoy it, and because in a lot of cases, wading gives us the best chance for success. But over the years I've noticed some misunderstandings about where and how we fish. I hear from a lot of reader, listeners and watchers of Troutbitten stuff. And one thing that frequently comes up is an assumption that all of our waters are small to medium sized. But that's not true. Each of us spends plenty of time on big rivers. We all have our favorite rivers outside of this region. We've all traveled. And even around here, we have opportunities to fish big rivers. So, what's big? I'll say a big river is one that you could float. And it's probably the kind of river where you can't wade all of it.So we're here to talk about fishing big water. In previous podcasts, we've spent some time talking about specific tactics and strategies for fishing small water, so let's do the same for big rivers. Each of us has a few tricks and some plans for getting the most out of a big water trip. We've made the mistakes, and we've all shared among ourselves how we eventually learned to not only manage big water but have some of the best days of the season.I always say that fishing big water and fishing it well takes a lot of discipline. We talk about all of that and a lot more in this podcastMy friends, Matt Grobe, Bill Dell, Austin Dando and Josh Darling join me for a great discussion.ResourcesVIDEO: Troutbitten | Reading Water in Levels, Lanes and SeamsREAD: Troutbitten | Never Blame the FishREAD: Troutbitten | Fishing Big Water -- One Key TipVisitTroutbitten WebsiteTroutbitten InstagramTroutbitten YouTubeTroutbitten Facebook Thanks to TroutRoutes:Use the code TROUTBITTEN for 20% off your membership athttps://maps.troutroutes.com Thanks to SkwalaUse the code, TROUTBITTEN10 for 10% off your order athttps://skwalafishing.com/
The news regarding Kim Porter's posthumous memoir, titled Kim's Lost Words, has stirred significant controversy. The memoir, which surfaced earlier this year, allegedly comprises diary entries from Porter's time with Sean "Diddy" Combs. Within its pages, Porter describes harrowing instances of emotional and physical abuse, including allegations of Diddy assaulting her with a chair and making death threats. The memoir also details accusations involving Diddy's infidelity, manipulation, and control throughout their relationship. The memoir, which has reportedly been found on a flash drive by Porter's friends, paints a dark picture of their relationship, stretching from the 1990s to the years leading up to her passing in 2018. While the memoir has not been officially authenticated, its release has drawn renewed scrutiny, especially in light of Diddy's recent legal troubles.However...Lawanda Lane, Kim Porter's longtime best friend and caregiver to her twin daughters with Sean "Diddy" Combs, has firmly denied the existence of any memoir authored by Porter. Lane, who lived with Porter for over two decades, stated that Porter never wrote such a manuscript and emphasized that, as someone who was with Porter daily, she would have been aware of any such writings. She also mentioned that after Porter's passing, she was responsible for organizing Porter's belongings and found no evidence of a memoir.Lane expressed skepticism about individuals claiming to possess Porter's writings, suggesting that these assertions are unfounded. We spend a lot of time thinking about tactics and working on techniques. We devote our energies toward finding fly patterns, tying up our confidence flies and testing new flies. We research new waters and explore unfinished sections in familiar waters. We spend a lot of time doing fishy things. This is a life on the water. The guys and I have been talking a lot about reading water. It's one of the biggest deficiencies we see while guiding — just choosing the right piece of a river for your next cast. It's about understanding what water should receive the most attention and what water gets gets a pass.As an angler, reading the water really comes down to understanding what a trout needs. We read water for depth, speed and structure, in reference to what a trout prefers. And when we talk about reading water, we're thinking about it all from an angler's perspective. If you're kayaking down a river for recreation, then how you read water will be pretty different.Everyone can pick out hydraulics and learn to read current seams. Those are the elementary building blocks of reading trout water. Then we take that knowledge and combine it with what a trout needs. And we eventually have a truly specific, knowledgeable approach to reading a river. Day to day, across the world, wherever trout live in rivers, creeks and streams, their needs are the same.My friends, Matt Grobe, Bill Dell, Dr. Trevor Smith and Austin Dando join me for a great discussion.ResourcesVIDEO: Troutbitten | Reading Water in Levels, Lanes and SeamsPODCAST: Troutbitten | Reading Water, and Cherry Picking vs Full Coverage S1, Ep6READ: Troutbitten | Reading Water - Finding the Invisible PotholesVisitTroutbitten WebsiteTroutbitten InstagramTroutbitten YouTubeTroutbitten Facebook Thanks to TroutRoutes:Use the code TROUTBITTEN for 20% off your membership athttps://maps.troutroutes.com Thanks to SkwalaUse the code, TROUTBITTEN10 for 10% off your order athttps://skwalafishing.com/

Tuesday “What's Buggin' You” segment for 4-29-25
Here's a topic that starts with an interesting question: What puts more trout in the net? Is it knowing your water or knowing your tactics?Of course, the easy answer is . . . both. Refine your skills and learn your rivers. Then put all of that together, and you have a great formula, not only for catching trout but for having a lot of fun.The truth is, as frequent anglers we're always involved in improving. It goes way beyond filling the fly box with new patterns. We know our deficiencies, and we're working to fix them. We also know you can only really tackle one thing at a time. So if you're out there fishing, or maybe even on the way to your next fishing trip, what are you working on? Really, what will put more fish in the net? Is it better to focus on the tactics and techniques, or is it better to learn the river itself? Basically, that means reading water better and finding fish.So we're looking forward to this discussion. It's a good concept, and we all have some opinions. My friends, Matt Grobe, Bill Dell and Austin Dando join me for a great discussion.ResourcesPODCAST: Troutbitten | How Woodsmanship Catches Fish - S11, Ep6VIDEO: Troutbitten | Reading Water in Levels, Lanes and SeamsREAD: Troutbitten | Read Trout WaterREAD: Troutbitten | Fish Familiar Waters VisitTroutbitten WebsiteTroutbitten InstagramTroutbitten YouTubeTroutbitten Facebook Thank You to Pre-Roll Ad Sponsors:SkwalaandOrvis

Becca Mann is a writer and athlete. A member of the USA Swimming National Team from 2012 until 2021, Becca is a 2x USA National Champion and was the youngest person ever to place in the Top 10 in 4 events at a single Olympic Trials. She has also represented Team USA at 4 World Championships. Becca initially fell in love with the solitude, power and efficiency that swimming offered but was ultimately motivated by the ability to consistently achieve goals. Whether moving to a more advanced lane, breaking a school record, breaking a state record or becoming a world champion, each small goal led to an even bigger one. No matter how big the goal was, her mindset stayed the same. She maintained the same pre-race routine (as it had worked before) and reminded herself that every meet was the most important meet of her life. After missing her 3rd Olympic team, she decided that if she was going to walk away, she would need to do something that had never been done before. With clear understanding and mastery of her mental strengths and vulnerabilities including OCD, she became the first person to have consecutively swum the triangle between the Hawaiian islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. This life defining experience allowed her to redefine her relationship with swimming and reminded herself that it is supposed to be fun. Becca Mann shares her struggles, insights and knowledge in her latest book, “Outside the Lanes.” @becca__mann
