As the people of God, we are who we are because of who Jesus is.What does this passage reveal to you about Jesus ? What does it reveal to you about what it means to be a Jesus follower? Jesus is alive.Can Jesus overcome? Is he in control? Can he change my life? Yes.Jesus is treasured by God.Jesus is the foundation of the church.The foundation of the cornerstone sets way for the rest of the building to be built. All other stones must be aligned with the cornerstone.Jesus sets the direction of the church, it all is set him. Everything and everyone is built on Jesus and who he is.What does this reveal about Jesus followers?If Jesus is alive, then you too are alive.if it weren’t for Jesus there wouldn’t be living hope. In Christ we are built up FROM acceptance not TO acceptance. Acceptance is already given for those that love and follow Jesus.We often look more to our shame, guilt, and opinions of others instead of looking to what Jesus says about us. You are as righteous today as 1000 years in heaven.
1 Peter 1:22 – 2:3The Call to LoveHaving purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart. (1:22)1. A Complacent Love- Love that enjoys2. A Benevolent Love- Love that givesWhat does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like. (1:24-25) 2. A Mighty GospelHow to Grow in Love1. Starve your Flesh to Death -So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. (2:1) -For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:13) -Do you make it your daily work? Be always at it while you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you. (2:2-3) What is the biblical story? It’s the story of a God of love invading the world in the person of his Son of love to establish his kingdom of love by a radical sacrifice of love, to forgive us in love and draw us into his family of love, and to send us out as ambassadors of the very same love. The entire hope of fallen humanity rests on this one thing— that there is a Savior who is eternally steadfast in redeeming, forgiving, reconciling, transforming, and delivering love. (Paul Tripp)
1 Peter 1:13-21The Big Idea—Real hope is made of unshakable confidence and joyful expectancy in the person and work of Jesus and makes the real life difference of fueling holiness in the life of a Christian. Real hope is the fuel and foundation of real holiness.What are the real, objective reasons that give Christians hope?Real hope is established by the precious blood of Christ.Real hope is sustained by the resurrection of Christ from the dead.Peter’s first sermon at Pentecost—“this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it (Acts 2:23-24).”Real hope eagerly anticipates the return of Christ.C. S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity, “Hope is one of the Theological Virtues. This means that a continual looking forward to the eternal world is not (as some modern people think) a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do.”How do we experience and enjoy real hope?We experience and enjoy real hope by preparing our minds for action.We experience and enjoy real hope by being sober-minded.We experience and enjoy real hope in community.Two aspects of our holiness—1) positional holiness2) practicing holiness.Paul wrote, “For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes (1 Corinthians 11:23-26).”
