Jason and Dan DeGraff kick off the Messy Reformation's annual Synod coverage with a breakdown of the convening session of Synod 2026. The convening session is mostly a warm-up — an hour of tech troubleshooting and a chance for delegates to find their footing before the real work begins. But it ends with the one piece of business that, year after year, tells you more about where Synod is headed than almost anything else: the election of officers. Chad Steenwyk is president. Derek Buikema is vice president. Jose Reyes is first clerk. Dave Tenclay is second clerk. Jason's point is not the names themselves but what it means that none of these names is a surprise. Four years ago, the idea that a leader of the Abide Project could be elected president of Synod would have been unthinkable — anyone associated with Abide carried what Jason calls the black mark of the plague. Now it just makes sense. That, he argues, is the single most important thing this episode is about: the fog of reformation makes it easy to forget how far the CRC has actually moved. Dan brings the numbers and the texture. Over 100 new delegates this year — close to 58 percent of the floor — which is roughly the pattern of the last several synods. He and Jason talk about why the convening session matters even when it looks like nothing happens, why around 25 absent delegates is worth a gentle rebuke, and what it means that the delegates got behind strong confessional leaders right out of the gate. They engage Paul VanderKlay's recent video predicting that the pendulum has swung about as far as it will, and Jason pushes back: he thinks Synod is increasingly willing to take the reins on things like the Calvin Seminary presidency precisely because trust in the institution has been lost. The conversation closes on demographics that complicate any simple read — the confessional fire Jason has seen among Korean, Hispanic, and Venezuelan delegates, the talk of a new Classis Lone Star out of Hispanic church plants in Texas, and the continued decline in women delegates. The hosts commit to a few coverage episodes during Synod rather than daily updates, and Jason ends where the podcast always ends: this is Christ's church, he bought it with his blood, so keep watch on your life and doctrine and keep fighting the good fight in this messy reformation. Series: The Fruit of the Spirit Title: Plant and Abide Speaker: Pastor Daron Earlewine Date: May 31, 2026 SERIES OVERVIEW: This year, we have been leaning into the person and work of the Holy Spirit. We have talked about the Spirit's presence, power, voice, and gifts. But one of the most important works of the Holy Spirit is not only what He does through us, but what He forms within us. The gifts of the Spirit matter. God empowers His people for ministry, mission, healing, prophecy, service, leadership, and evangelism. But Scripture is clear: spiritual power without spiritual character is dangerous. A person can be gifted and still be immature. A church can be impressive and still be unhealthy. A leader can have influence and still lack integrity. That is why Paul tells us in Galatians 5 that the evidence of a Spirit-filled life is not only power, but fruit: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." — Galatians 5:22–23 NIV The fruit of the Spirit is the character of Jesus being cultivated in us by the Holy Spirit. This summer, we will walk through each fruit one week at a time and ask: What kind of people is the Holy Spirit forming us to become? Because the goal is not merely to be more talented, more productive, more knowledgeable, or more spiritually impressive. The goal is to become more like Jesus. Justin Butler preaches from 1 John 2:18-27 and reminds us that false teachers reveal themselves by departing from the truth, denying who Jesus is, and seeking to deceive the church. In contrast, true believers abide in Christ by accepting His salvation and remaining faithful to the end.
question: how do we get salty and stay salty? In John 15, Jesus teaches that fruit is not produced through striving, image, or performance, but through abiding in Him. Before we can reflect Jesus publicly, we have to remain connected to Him privately. This message is a reminder that connection produces fruit, while disconnection produces performance. The invitation of Jesus is not to try harder, but to remain closer.

In John 15, Jesus tells his disciples to abide in him. But what exactly does Jesus mean by "abide"? And how does he expect his disciples to do that? How does abiding in Christ relate to faith and works? In this episode, Matthew takes listeners through these questions, explaining in practical terms this well known passage. +++Pre-order Matt's newest book: Sightings and Secrets: UFOs, Eyewitness Testimonies, and How Christians Can Make Sense of the Unknown: https://a.co/d/0eD0cGtz Support The Bible (Unmuted) via Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/TheBibleUnmutedMatthew's blog: https://matthewhalsted.substack.comDon't forget to subscribe to The Bible (Unmuted)!

Scripture: Psalm 62:1-7SHOW NOTES: For encouragement on your spiritual journey, we invite you to visit our ministry website, Discover God's Truth, where you can access additional resources to enrich your Walk with God. NEW! Watch us ONLINE! Click here! The vineyard goes through many seasons. The fruit—grapes—is harvested 150-180 days after flowering. When we consider Jesus' command, “Abide in Me,” we should reflect on the seasons and how to abide. For God alone my soul waits in silence; from Him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.Psalm 62:1-2 The psalmist finds his deepest consolation in one conviction: God is enough. True peace belongs to those who abide in quietness of heart before Him. Resting in God requires waiting — patience is essential. God is both the strength of His people (“rock” and “fortress”) and the source of their salvation. For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I will not be shaken. My salvation and glory depend on God, my strong rock. My refuge is in God.Psalm 62:5-7 Notice that David doesn't say, “Look to the Lord first, and then see what else might help.” He says, "Trust (wait) in God alone.” Turn away from every other substitute and turn toward the one who is truly sufficient. We do not deny our pain or pretend our circumstances are easy. Rather, we choose, in the middle of the difficulty, to direct our souls toward God rather than away from Him. This is not passive resignation — it is active and intentional surrender. Abiding is an active choice. Song: Rest - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ur78_jDX7P4&list=RDUr78_jDX7P4&start_radio=1

What does it mean to abide in Christ — and why does Jesus say it's the key to everything in the Christian life? This episode is sponsored by The Master's University. To learn more about how you can invest in a college education devoted to Christ & Scripture, visit https://www.masters.eduIn this episode, we open up John 15 and break down what abiding in Jesus actually looks like in practical, everyday terms. If you've ever felt like your Christian life was running on empty, or wondered why real joy and spiritual fruit seem out of reach, this conversation is for you.We cover:✔ What "abide in me" means (it's simpler than you think)✔ Why union with Christ is the foundation of all spiritual growth✔ How abiding in God's Word leads to abiding in His love✔ The role of prayer in staying connected to Jesus✔ What you're missing out on if you're not abiding — including the unshakeable joy Jesus promises✔ The difference between being positionally in Christ vs. practically living it out Whether you're a new believer or a seasoned Christian, Jesus' command to abide in Him is the heartbeat of the Christian faith — not for pastors or super-evangelists, but for every follower of Christ.
