Freedom. It is something we all desire and want. As a matter of fact, when it comes to freedom there are only two descriptors that really matter in this life, people who are free and people who are enslaved. God created us to experience and live in freedom. Practically speaking, history tells us that all of human life revolves around either having freedom or having it forcibly taken away. But did you know you could be free and more enslaved than an enslaved person? The only thing worse than being enslaved, is being enslaved and thinking you are free. Sadly this is the norm and happens all the time spiritually speaking because freedom is not just physical, from an eternally more important perspective freedom is spiritual. This is week 4 of our series in which our Every Nation churches all over the world are working through the Book of John simultaneously. The theme is “Abide,” as we continue to look at what it means to abide, or remain in Christ.

By Robin Webber in Las Vegas, NV, Redlands, CA, San Diego, CA - January 21, 2022 - This message shares David's great desire to forever be able to be in the presence of God. It starts with two questions that build on top of one another. It then offers a roadmap of discovery about our inner being that concludes with a firm statement of knowing faith. The words of this Psalm speak not merely to ancient Israel of Old, but to the Israel of God today (Galatians 6:16)---the Body of Christ.

Week Two Reflections with Hunter: https://youtu.be/LnEfwjAyYzA Come Early and Receive all that He Has. Exodus 1 - 2, Psalm 88 and Luke 21 Luke tells us at the end of this passage that the crowds gathered at the temple, early each morning, to hear Jesus  That may be what you are doing right now, early in the morning, coming to hear him.   We live in a world in flux, where city walls and kingdoms fall, where babies are born in perilous times and places - like Moses.  In that kind of world, where the earth shakes and the oceans rise and fall, there's one thing that doesn't shift or collapse or crumble. That one thing, Jesus says, is the Word of God.  When we see the rattle and hum, the rise and fall, the collapse and chaos - when we see all these things take place, we can know that the kingdom of God is near.  It ought to comfort us, that when things are falling apart, the kingdom of God is rising up.   Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear. Lk 21:33 NLT When things are falling apart at the seams, the word of God keeps things sewn together.  The Messiah of Israel, the enduring word of God, being spoken of here, is a person, Jesus Christ himself.  We can call on him like the folks at the end of Luke 21.   Early each day, amidst all of life's uncertainties, the ebb and flow, the rise and fall - we can come to him as our refuge, strength, comforter, and wisdom. We can come each day, to be reminded of our new identity in the Living Word.  We can discover what it means to abide in the living Word - to live in him and he in us. We can come and experience the joy and fruitfulness and goodness of it all.   Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.  If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(Jn 15:4,7 ESV) Let's discover more and more of this, every day of our life.  Come to the word early each day, like the folks in Luke 21.  Magnificent buildings and even kingdoms,  come and go.  Sometimes it all just falls apart, but there is a person, the living word of God, that will keep us together.  Heaven and earth will fade away but the living Word of God, Jesus, remains.   Keep coming to him each morning to receive all that he has for you each day.

Against the advice of her medical team, she resolved to have her baby despite a chromosomal condition called Trisomy 18. In the midst of the uncertainty and pain, Tricia's wish for a healthy baby girl changed into something more beautiful than she could have ever dreamed of.     Tricia's story is a reminder of how God's transforming power allows us to love deeper, go further, and grow more than we could ever have imagined for ourselves. I especially love Tricia's words on learning to live for something bigger than ourselves—a great perspective to consider in our parenting.  So glad you're with us today!   For a limited time, our listeners will get 25% off a premium Abide  subscription, when you visit Abide.co/pardonthemess.      Resources from today's show: When Wishes Change: What if the thing you feared most brings more than you dreamed? By Tricia Roos See more from Tricia on her website, follow her on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

Before we are asked to do anything for God, He invites us to be with Him. Intimacy with Jesus is the goal. But so often, our presence with God takes a backseat to performance. There is work to be done, accomplishments to be won… We forget the truth of Psalm 46:10—that we know God best when we are still before Him. We will never stumble into godliness. This is week 2 of the ABIDE series we are doing in conjunction with all of Every Nation Churches throughout the world, and we walk through the book of John. We will also be corporately joining together for a week of prayer and fasting and consecration starting tomorrow. Abide means to remain or stay, and as we remain and stay in Christ we will begin to live our lives in a more God-honoring way. This is how we were meant to live, to glorify God, to know Him more and to make Him known more. To know Him more intimately and make Him known more broadly. One of the primary ways we do this is through engaging with God through His Word, the Bible. With the help of the Holy Spirit we read, comprehend, believe and obey the Word of God. As we learned last week, Jesus was the Word made flesh. Jesus is the eternal Word, the Living Word, the written Word. As we continue in the book of John throughout this series, hopefully we will see what John wants us to see even more clearly, who Jesus really is.

The great need of the hour is to know God more deeply and personally and biblically. Only then will we find great delight.

Broadcasts – Christian Working Woman

(Presented by Lisa Bishop) It is so vital that you and I are intentionally investing time to be in God's Word, immersing ourselves in the truth of the Bible. Isaiah 55:11 reminds us that when God sends out his Word it always produces fruit. When we read and meditate on God's divine instruction, the truth of who God is and his character, who we are in him and the life he has empowered us to live…as we invite and surrender to the Holy Spirit at work in us, we are guaranteed a productive return. There are so many investments we make today, with our time and resources, with our finances. And we will not always get the return on investment we hoped for. BUT… the investment we can count on is spending time with Jesus, letting God's Word penetrate, renew and transform our hearts, minds and ways of being and living. God promises that his Word will accomplish all he wants it to, and it will prosper everywhere he sends it. One of the verses I have memorized over the last several years is 1 Thessalonians 5:11: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” Paul tells the church in Thessalonica to “encourage one another and build one another up, just as they are doing.” He is making an assumption about believers in Jesus, that they are in fact encouraging one another in God's truth. That should be true of us, that we are encouraged and built up in our faith and we are an encouragement to others. Which means we need Christian community. (As a side note - if you are not part of a Bible preaching church and small group Bible study may I kindly encourage you to participate in one!) To be encouraged and built up in our faith, it is necessary that we are part of a Christian community. It is also essential that we make it a daily habit of abiding in Jesus. What does it mean to abide in Jesus? I was listening to a podcast and the speaker said, your life is a reflection of who you spend the most time with. In other words, tell me who you are hanging out with, and I will tell you who you will become. He was saying that the people we surround ourselves with on a daily basis will influence our lives, our thoughts, our behavior and actions. Think about the three to four people you spend the most time with. Do they encourage you in your faith and to exhibit Christ-likeness? When people spend time with you, are they encouraged to love and follow Jesus? Our lives will reflect who we spend time with. And the most important relationship that you and I as believers have is our relationship with Jesus. When we spend time with him, when we abide in him, our lives will reveal and exhibit Christ. And when we display Christ in our lives, we are living out our purpose, our highest and greatest calling. We are putting his glory on display and drawing people to him. And when we abide in Christ, we live our lives set apart, we bear fruit. Jesus said, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4-5). Jesus paints the metaphor of abiding and compares it to a vine and branches. Parts of California are known as wine country where there are miles of vineyards. When you look at the vineyards you can see thick vines with several branches growing off of them. The branches that are healthy and connected to the vine have beautiful and juicy grapes growing from them. There are also some branches of grapes that have broken apart from the vine and have started to wither and shrivel up. They are no longer good for producing what they were intended to produce. When Jesus uses this picture of a vine and branches and abiding, he is saying that he is the vine and we are the branches that must remain connected to him if we want our lives to produce healthy fruit...

January 07 2022 Friday Week 29 In Him Scripture Study  Let His Word Abide In You Ephesians 1:15-23 NLT  'Ever since I first heard of your strong faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for God's people everywhere, I have not stopped thanking God for you. I pray for you constantly, asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance. I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God's power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God's right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come. God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of the church. And the church is his body; it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.'  Ephesians 3:14-21 NLT 'When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God's love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.' I'm kicking off the New Year a little differently this year with no guest joining us today. Instead, I'm sharing some of the things I wish I had known as a younger mom. I try not to live with regrets, but I also know the value that comes by taking inventory in our parenting and acknowledging the areas of growth as well as the struggles. The four things I'm sharing with you today began with an article I wrote several years ago from the perspective of “the oldest mom on the playground.” Since then, I've had opportunities to share these parenting truths to various groups, and the Lord has given me even greater clarity that I pray will encourage and challenge you. I have no doubt that your social media feeds (like mine) are packed with all kinds of weight loss and exercise challenges for a physically healthier 2022. But I would also encourage you to avoid “back-burnering” (assuming that's a word) your parenting and instead take this week to consider what's working, what's not, where you might need to be encouraged, and where you need to encourage others. I'll start us off with today's podcast on the four things I would tell my younger parenting self. I would be so grateful if you would not only take a minute to listen, but then also share it with the other parents you're walking alongside with each day. P.S. As we begin this New Year, one of our prayers is that Pardon the Mess will reach more and more parents. One way you can help us do this is to leave a review on iTunes or wherever you listen to podcasts. It would be a great blessing if you could take just a minute and do that for me today! So grateful

Phil experienced a Twitter typhoon last week when he suggested “love your country” is not a Biblical command. The Holy Post crew unpacks the reactions and asks what separates godly and ungodly patriotism. Then, Skye talks to Christine Caine, founder of The A21 Campaign, about her experience of American evangelicalism as an Australian Pentecostal. How to activate a miracle? Activate felt-Love by being the witness.  Yesterday I flew out in the morning from Florida to Missouri to pick up the kiddos, with the intention of flying back to Florida on the same day.   I left at 8am and we were back by 10pm-- no delays, Go(o)d music, Go(o)d books, and cat naps all the way!  In the face of every seeming hiccup, I'd:   1.  Notice it.  2.  Close my eyes for a second and listen for the Silence. (#HardReset). 3. Notice what's noticing the Silence and the hiccup.  4. Abide (t)here as the Loving-Still-Witness. 5. Remember that the hiccups only come to keep me aware as Love.  Hiccups are Grace, too. We are home safe and I didn't even miss a recording for you!   Keep hard resetting.  Love works. I Love you, Niknikki@curlynikki.com Today's Reading--"Be Still! Not as any stillness you have ever known before. The stillness which lies at the bottom of the ocean, eternally quiet, yet eternally vibrant and alive with infinite activity. Only by attaining this super-stillness can the full realization of former talks be attained. You must learn to keep this stillness, to retreat into it at any moment, whenever any confusion arises in your physical or mental world. Thus shall all difficulties solve themselves by My Power working through you. Learn to BE STILL instantly and watch God's Power work! John 15:5 (NIV) “apart from Me you can do nothing.”John 15:1:11 (ESV)"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples. As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.”1 Corinthians 3:12-15 (NIV)“If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person's work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.”John 14:1-3 (NIV)“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me. My Father's house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am.”John 14:16-17 (NKJV)“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”John 14:18-19 (NKJV)“I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also.”John 14:27 (NKJV)“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”John 16:8-11 (NIV)“When He comes, He will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in Me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see Me no longer; and about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.”John 16:20 (NIV)“Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.”

If you were to pick one word for the year, what would it be? Invite . . . Abide . . . Balance . . . Simplify . . . ? Every January, many of us proclaim our word for the year, choosing something inspiring that will help us set our intention for the coming months. But what would happen if rather than choosing one word for an entire year (because let's face it, some of us forget by March), we focused on one good word each day―one thought-provoking, spiritually relevant, and encouraging word that reveals the many lovely and delightful truths of who Jesus is in our lives? The Ruth Experience is on the show today talking about One Good Word a Day. This 365 day devotional offers simple, but deeply spiritual meditations that will help us linger on one word each day to identify and reflect on how Jesus as the Word influences our daily lives. We pray you realize that Jesus is more than one word. He offers us abundance, hope, peace, kindness, courage, mercy, and so much more. One Good Word a Day reminds us that in Christ, we find all we need to live encouraged and uplifted every day. “Keep your eyes open. God sends us in the places and spaces we already are.” “Spend time with God and focus on Him. Remind yourself of His care and love for you. Then, out of that place, be aware of how you can love the people around you.” “Be intentional and look for opportunities around you.” Connect with The Ruth Experience: @theruthexperience

With family: 2 Chronicles 30; Revelation 16 2 Chronicles 30 (Listen) Passover Celebrated 30 Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote letters also to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem to keep the Passover to the LORD, the God of Israel. 2 For the king and his princes and all the assembly in Jerusalem had taken counsel to keep the Passover in the second month—3 for they could not keep it at that time because the priests had not consecrated themselves in sufficient number, nor had the people assembled in Jerusalem—4 and the plan seemed right to the king and all the assembly. 5 So they decreed to make a proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, that the people should come and keep the Passover to the LORD, the God of Israel, at Jerusalem, for they had not kept it as often as prescribed. 6 So couriers went throughout all Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his princes, as the king had commanded, saying, “O people of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, that he may turn again to the remnant of you who have escaped from the hand of the kings of Assyria. 7 Do not be like your fathers and your brothers, who were faithless to the LORD God of their fathers, so that he made them a desolation, as you see. 8 Do not now be stiff-necked as your fathers were, but yield yourselves to the LORD and come to his sanctuary, which he has consecrated forever, and serve the LORD your God, that his fierce anger may turn away from you. 9 For if you return to the LORD, your brothers and your children will find compassion with their captors and return to this land. For the LORD your God is gracious and merciful and will not turn away his face from you, if you return to him.” 10 So the couriers went from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, and as far as Zebulun, but they laughed them to scorn and mocked them. 11 However, some men of Asher, of Manasseh, and of Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem. 12 The hand of God was also on Judah to give them one heart to do what the king and the princes commanded by the word of the LORD. 13 And many people came together in Jerusalem to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the second month, a very great assembly. 14 They set to work and removed the altars that were in Jerusalem, and all the altars for burning incense they took away and threw into the brook Kidron. 15 And they slaughtered the Passover lamb on the fourteenth day of the second month. And the priests and the Levites were ashamed, so that they consecrated themselves and brought burnt offerings into the house of the LORD. 16 They took their accustomed posts according to the Law of Moses the man of God. The priests threw the blood that they received from the hand of the Levites. 17 For there were many in the assembly who had not consecrated themselves. Therefore the Levites had to slaughter the Passover lamb for everyone who was not clean, to consecrate it to the LORD. 18 For a majority of the people, many of them from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet they ate the Passover otherwise than as prescribed. For Hezekiah had prayed for them, saying, “May the good LORD pardon everyone 19 who sets his heart to seek God, the LORD, the God of his fathers, even though not according to the sanctuary's rules of cleanness.”1 20 And the LORD heard Hezekiah and healed the people. 21 And the people of Israel who were present at Jerusalem kept the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with great gladness, and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day, singing with all their might2 to the LORD. 22 And Hezekiah spoke encouragingly to all the Levites who showed good skill in the service of the LORD. So they ate the food of the festival for seven days, sacrificing peace offerings and giving thanks to the LORD, the God of their fathers. 23 Then the whole assembly agreed together to keep the feast for another seven days. So they kept it for another seven days with gladness. 24 For Hezekiah king of Judah gave the assembly 1,000 bulls and 7,000 sheep for offerings, and the princes gave the assembly 1,000 bulls and 10,000 sheep. And the priests consecrated themselves in great numbers. 25 The whole assembly of Judah, and the priests and the Levites, and the whole assembly that came out of Israel, and the sojourners who came out of the land of Israel, and the sojourners who lived in Judah, rejoiced. 26 So there was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem. 27 Then the priests and the Levites arose and blessed the people, and their voice was heard, and their prayer came to his holy habitation in heaven. Footnotes [1] 30:19 Hebrew not according to the cleanness of holiness [2] 30:21 Compare 1 Chronicles 13:8; Hebrew with instruments of might (ESV) Revelation 16 (Listen) The Seven Bowls of God's Wrath 16 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, “Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.” 2 So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and harmful and painful sores came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. 3 The second angel poured out his bowl into the sea, and it became like the blood of a corpse, and every living thing died that was in the sea. 4 The third angel poured out his bowl into the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood. 5 And I heard the angel in charge of the waters1 say,   “Just are you, O Holy One, who is and who was,    for you brought these judgments.6   For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets,    and you have given them blood to drink.  It is what they deserve!” 7 And I heard the altar saying,   “Yes, Lord God the Almighty,    true and just are your judgments!” 8 The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was allowed to scorch people with fire. 9 They were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed2 the name of God who had power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory. 10 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness. People gnawed their tongues in anguish 11 and cursed the God of heaven for their pain and sores. They did not repent of their deeds. 12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east. 13 And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs. 14 For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”) 16 And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon. The Seventh Bowl 17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!” 18 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings,3 peals of thunder, and a great earthquake such as there had never been since man was on the earth, so great was that earthquake. 19 The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and God remembered Babylon the great, to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath. 20 And every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found. 21 And great hailstones, about one hundred pounds4 each, fell from heaven on people; and they cursed God for the plague of the hail, because the plague was so severe. The siege of Jerusalem will also be against Judah. 3 On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it. 4 On that day, declares the LORD, I will strike every horse with panic, and its rider with madness. But for the sake of the house of Judah I will keep my eyes open, when I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. 5 Then the clans of Judah shall say to themselves, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength through the LORD of hosts, their God.' 6 “On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a blazing pot in the midst of wood, like a flaming torch among sheaves. And they shall devour to the right and to the left all the surrounding peoples, while Jerusalem shall again be inhabited in its place, in Jerusalem. 7 “And the LORD will give salvation to the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not surpass that of Judah. 8 On that day the LORD will protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the LORD, going before them. 9 And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem. Him Whom They Have Pierced 10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. 11 On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning for Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 The land shall mourn, each family1 by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14 and all the families that are left, each by itself, and their wives by themselves. 13 “On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness. Footnotes [1] 12:12 Or clan; throughout verses 12–14 (ESV) John 15 (Listen) I Am the True Vine 15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants,1 for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another. The Hatred of the World 18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin,2 but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ‘They hated me without a cause.' 26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. Footnotes [1] 15:15 Or bondservants, or slaves (for the contextual rendering of the Greek word doulos, see Preface); likewise for servant later in this verse and in verse 20 [2] 15:22 Greek they would not have sin; also verse 24 (ESV)
