Sarah Harrison-McQueenWhat is the difference between simply passing through a place, a relationship, or even our faith, and truly settling in and abiding?In this message, Pastor Sarah reflects on the difference between being a tourist and becoming rooted in a place. Drawing from her own experience spending time in Hawaii, she describes how staying long enough to return to the same cafés, recognize familiar faces, and settle into a different rhythm created a sense of belonging she never experienced on a short vacation. That experience becomes a window into Jesus' invitation in John 15: “Remain in me, and I will remain in you.”Jesus uses the image of a vine and its branches to describe what it means to stay connected to the source of life. A branch does not manufacture its own life; it receives nourishment from the vine. In the same way, Jesus invites us not simply to believe in him, but to abide—to remain, settle in, and become deeply rooted in the love of God.Jesus gives this teaching to his disciples knowing that their world is about to fall apart. He knows they will face fear, grief, confusion, and uncertainty. His invitation is to remain connected even then, especially then. When life becomes frightening or overwhelming, we can be tempted to scatter, isolate, or disconnect. Jesus instead says: Come back to the vine. Stay connected to the source of life.But abiding also involves pruning. Jesus speaks about branches being trimmed so that they can bear more fruit. Pastor Sarah explores pruning not as punishment, but as care—the loving work of making room for what produces love and joy. Sometimes what needs to be pruned is obvious: habits that isolate us, resentment, fear, or busyness. Other times it is more subtle, such as being physically present while our hearts and minds are somewhere else.The passage also reminds us that our connection to Christ cannot be separated from our connection to one another. Just as branches are connected to the same vine, we are woven together as the body of Christ. Healthy community is a place where we both serve and are served, give and receive, and experience the nourishment that comes through genuine relationships.Jesus says that abiding in him produces fruit, and Pastor Sarah identifies that fruit as love: love that crosses the road, sits at the table with unlikely guests, serves others, and flows into the neighborhood and the world.The invitation is not to try harder or do more. It is to abide. The fruit of our lives is expressed in words and actions. Everyone will produce some kind of fruit, whether it is good or bad. Abiding in Christ offers us all we need to have a harvest of good from our lives. However, living disconnected from Jesus will result in fruit that looks like the world. We will be identified by the fruit of our lives.

Are you reading God's Word—or is God's Word actually changing you?In this message from John 15, we discover what it really means to abide in the Word. Jesus connects abiding in Him with allowing His Word to abide in us—and the result is a life that bears fruit and brings glory to God.But abiding in the Word is more than simply owning a Bible, attending church, or knowing more Scripture. It means making Jesus and His truth the foundation of our lives. In this message, we explore three habits that help us abide in the Word: commit to it, grow in it, and obey it.Because the goal isn't simply to know more about the Bible. The goal is to know Jesus more deeply and allow His Word to change the way we live.

I'm going to be honest with you. Offense is something I've struggled with my whole life. For the last four weeks, my church Bible study has been going through The Bait of Satan by John Bevere. I'd listened to it years ago, but this time it hit me so differently. It was exactly what I needed to hear. Offense doesn't stay small. It starts with a comment, a client, or a post on social media. Then it takes root and grows into bitterness and a hardened heart. And the Bible tells us that in the last days, the love of many will grow cold. In this episode I talk about how offense shows up in our relationships, in our businesses, and in how we see the world right now. We can be completely right in where we stand and still be in danger spiritually if our hearts go cold. I also share something I haven't said out loud before. There was a season when I got offended at God. Three of my biggest prayers hadn't been answered, and I let that offense slow me down, even here on this podcast. God has been doing beautiful things in that quiet season, and I want to share what He's shown me. Every offense we hold onto is a chance for bitterness to take root. Being right isn't the goal. We can stand on God's side of an issue and still be in danger if our hearts grow hard toward people. A cold heart stops the mission. When our hearts harden, we stop forgiving, stop loving, and stop making disciples. One hard client shouldn't define our business. The enemy wants us focused on the one difficult clients, not the many we love serving. What we focus on shapes our hearts. Philippians 4:8 is a daily choice, especially online. Grace makes us unoffendable. Remembering how much we've been forgiven leaves room for everyone else. We can get offended at God, too. Lazarus shows us that when God doesn't come the way we expect, He's up to something bigger. Trust Him in the process. Don't let offense come between you and God, you and people, or you and your calling. Israel went into battle believing they had everything they needed. They had their history. They had their religious leaders. They had the Ark of the Covenant. They even had enough excitement to shout until the ground shook.But they were missing the most important thing: a right relationship with God.In 1 Samuel 4, Israel tries to use the Ark of the Covenant almost like a spiritual good-luck charm. Instead of repenting and seeking God, they bring the ark into battle and assume God will give them victory.They wanted God's power without God's presence, God's blessing without obedience, and God's victory without repentance.We can fall into the same trap today.We can trust in church attendance, traditions, programs, committees, worship styles, Bible knowledge, or religious routines while neglecting a genuine daily walk with Christ. There is nothing wrong with these things, but none of them can substitute for knowing, obeying, and depending upon the Lord.Israel had the ark.They had the shout.They had the history.They had the confidence.What they needed was God.This message from 1 Samuel 4:1–22 challenges us to ask a serious question:Am I trusting Christ, or am I trusting my familiarity with Christian things?Church programs cannot save us.Traditions cannot save us.Religious excitement cannot save us.Christ can.“Abide in me, and I in you.” — John 15:4

In 1 John 2:12–28, John calls believers to abide in Christ, remaining rooted in His love, His Word, and the truth of what He has accomplished. Though the desires of the world compete for our hearts, they are temporary and cannot satisfy like knowing God and doing His will. CHANGES IN MAN'S SOCIETY ALWAYS COME FROM THE BOTTOM, NOT THE TOP--changes in economics, politics, or religion, or the earth--because the top does not want to change; it always wants to be on the top. But if they try to seal the pot to preserve the status quo, they cannot, and the pot will explode and destroy because of the fire. There must be this continual change; otherwise there would be stagnation. There must be this constant circulation or there would be total stagnation and corruption, because that which is at the top is the first to ferment, to sour, to rot, and that which is on the bottom is full of dregs, which if allowed to accumulate would solidify and clot the circulatory process, and that which is on the top would become scum and froth and, as in the brewing of a good beverage, it must be constantly stirred to prevent the settling of the dregs or the accumulation of scum, and to insure the equal distribution of all properties concerned, there must be constant change and constant stirring and constant circulation to prevent stagnation--either by fire or by sword.3. THIS IS THE PRINCIPLE OF SOCIETY--of the society of human beings--as sure as the laws of physics. God has ordained it that way! It is as sure as the law of gravity: What goes up must come down! And as sure as the law of circulation of liquids and gases: What is down must go up! "For every high place shall be made low and the low places shall be made straight, and the mighty shall be abased and the weak shall become great." "They which live by the sword shall die by the sword; but the meek shall inherit the earth."4. AS SURE AS THE NIGHT FOLLOWS THE DAY.--AS SURE AS THE SUN RISES, IT MUST ALSO SET. As sure as the rain falls, it must also rise again. As sure as "from dust thou art, to dust thou shalt return"! As sure as life and death there must be a continual birth, life, death, resurrection. The cycle must be completed. The perfect circle of eternity, to complete the creation of God, of which He is the Designer and the Beginning and the End, the Alpha and the Omega.5. SO, "HE THAT HATH BEGUN A GOOD WORK IN YOU SHALL COMPLETE IT TO THE END." There must be both "In the Beginning" and "The Last Days." "Fret not thyself therefore because of evil doers" because "their great houses shall become desolate and their palaces shall be laid waste," and the grandeur that was Greece shall tumble into ruins, and the glory that was Rome shall fade into oblivion, that He which is Eternal may be made manifest and the beauty of His creation and the Glory of His Power and the Eternity of His Love, that He may be All and in all, that God may be glorified.6. SOCIETY AND ECONOMICS AND POLITICS TEND TO SOLIDIFY LIKE THE CHURCH, IF NOT MELTED AND CAUSED TO FLUX BY THE WHITE HEAT OF GOD'S JUDGEMENTS--persecution, hardships, suffering--if not stirred over the fire by the sword of His chastisement.7. GOD MOVES. HE IS A MOVING GOD. HE IS NEVER STILL. He is always doing, going, saying, effecting change in every sphere of Creation. He is never static, except for Himself. "I am the Lord: I change not." Except for His Word. "Forever Oh Lord, Thy Word is settled in Heaven." And except for the future--His promises to His Children. "There remaineth therefore a rest for the Children of God."8. AS FOR ALL ELSE, "THE MOUNTAINS SHALL BE MADE LOW, THAT WHICH HE HAS EXALTED SHALL BE ABASED, AND THE LOW PLACES SHALL BE EXALTED. He that is of a humble and contrite heart, in due time shall be highly exalted, until time shall be no more, and the Kingdom of our Lord is come, where He that ruleth in righteousness shall judge the earth and establish everlasting peace, and the Kingdom shall never fall, neither shall it be given unto others." It shall be forever! And we shall rule and reign with Him upon the earth and He shall rule the nations with a rod of iron--inflexible, unchangeable, eternal--the society of the Kingdom of God. "For the things which are seen are temporal!"--for a little while--"but the things which are not seen are eternal."9. "FOR WHATSOEVER GOD DOETH, IT SHALL BE FOREVER; NOTHING SHALL BE PUT TO IT, NOR ANYTHING TAKEN FROM IT. For God doeth it that men might fear before Him, for God doeth it, that men might fear before Him!"10. BEHOLD, HOW THE MIGHTY HATH FALLEN, AND GOD HATH EXALTED HIM OF LOW DEGREE!11. ARE YOU BECOMING STATIONARY WITH THOSE SEEKING TO PRESERVE THE STATUS QUO, to freeze the world into a block of ice? Or are you moving with the white hot fires of the Spirit of God--burning, melting, moving, molding, flowing, pouring, sharing, in this Age of Aquarius--the Age of the Water of Life--the Age of the Water Givers--the Age of Life Sharers?12. ARE YOU ATTEMPTING TO FREEZE AND PRESERVE, TO SOLIDIFY INTO IMMOVABLE ICE THAT MEANS DEATH?--Or are you warm, loving and sharing and wooing and sowing and conceiving with the Seed that brings Life--new birth, new creatures, and a new world--where "old things are passed away and all things are become new"!13. YOU'D BETTER MOVE NOW--WITH THE LIFE OF GOD--OR YOU'LL BE LEFT BEHIND IN THE DEATH OF THIS WORLD! Karl Marx was right, this world must change in the dialectics of its materialism in which nothing is permanent, but he was short sighted and did not foresee the unchangeable eternity of the spiritual world which will never change. "For that which is flesh is flesh, and that which is spirit is spirit" and "flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God" for, "God is a Spirit, eternal, unchangeable in the heavens" and "they which worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth, for the Father seeketh such to worship Him, neither in this place, nor in that mountain, but in the eternal Spirit of God."14. "ALL THINGS CHANGE, BUT JESUS NEVER!--Glory to His Name!"15. "Abide with me, Fast falls the eventide;The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide...."16. "Change and decay in all around see;Oh, Thou Who changest not, Abide with me!"

After a brief discussion about the current AI brouhaha, Wayne and Kyle continue their conversation about what it means to abide in Christ. Fear, religious performance, and the demand to “get it right” can make spiritual life feel forced, but God's presence draws us another way. Abiding grows as we recognize his invitation in our longing and respond to what he reveals. Then we'll be prepared when difficult times come and not have to try to close the circle with our own resources. Exploring his presence is best done in love, at rest, and with playfulness. Genuine abiding is not driven by obligation; it unfolds in love, trust, and an increasing freedom to live with God in the reality of our everyday lives.
