Grace is a gift—not something we earn. But if we've already received grace, what role does effort play in our walk with Jesus? This Sunday, we'll continue our new Abide in Me series and explore the difference between being saved by grace and being formed into the image of Christ, and why following Jesus requires both surrender and intentional effort.

What do you need from Jesus? And even more importantly, what does Jesus want to do in you? This Sunday, we begin our new school year theme from the words of Jesus, Abide in Me. We'll explore the difference between coming to Jesus simply to have our needs met and choosing to truly become like Him. Jesus invites us to something deeper—a life of transformation.

In Mark 4:1–20, Jesus tells the Parable of the Sower and explains why people respond so differently to the preaching of the Word. The problem is not with the seed. The seed is the Word of God. The difference is found in the soil of the human heart. Some hear with hardened hearts, and Satan quickly snatches away the Word. Others receive it with initial enthusiasm but have no root and fall away when obedience becomes costly. Still others hear the Word, but the cares of the world, the deceitfulness of riches, and other desires choke it until it becomes unfruitful. But there is also good soil. These hear the Word, receive it, and bear fruit thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundredfold. Jesus therefore confronts every hearer with a searching question: How are you hearing the Word of God? Yet this passage is not simply an exhortation to try harder to become good soil. Christ is the faithful Sower and the living Word. He is the obedient and fruitful Son, and through His death and resurrection He brings forth a harvest of redeemed sinners. By His Spirit He softens hardened hearts, roots His people in Himself, frees them from the thorns of this age, and makes them fruitful by grace. Take care how you hear. Receive the Word. Trust Christ. Abide in Him. Bear fruit to the glory of God.

The Reason (The stakes are too low).We live in a world that requires us to learn the language of prayer because we live in God's world.16 For by[f] him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:16-174 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:4-52.) The Pathway (The knowledge doesn't translate to life)But if I try to set forth something of the reasonableness of all prayer, I beg my readers to remember that it is for the sake of action and not speculation; if prayer be anything at all, it is a thing to be done: what matter whether you agree with me or not, if you do not pray?George MacDonaldPrayer is less a thing to understand, and more a thing to be done.3.) Immersion (High stakes, totally practical)Immersion: foreign language instruction in which only the language being taught is used15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:2616 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.1 Thessalonians 5:16-18There is a reality of being in which all things are easy and plain—oneness, that is, with the Lord of Life; to pray for this is the first thing; and to the point of this prayer every difficulty hedges and directs us. George MacDonaldLEARN HOW TO “BE” THROUGH PRAYER“The first purpose of prayer isn't getting what we need from God—it's learning to live with God.”14 Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” 16 And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” 20 “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” 21 And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”Mark 8:14-21We learn to COMMUNE before we learn to COMMUNICATE “God is with me”16 And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? What does it really mean to "abide" in Christ? In this episode of Friends with God, Joe explores one of Jesus' most powerful teachings from John 15:1-8, where Jesus calls Himself the true vine and us the branches. Instead of striving harder, performing better, or trying to earn God's approval, Joe reflects on a much simpler invitation: stay connected.Through everyday examples, practical application, and honest conversation, this episode explores how abiding isn't about doing more. It's about remaining rooted in Christ so that peace, joy, faith, and love naturally grow as the fruit of a life connected to Him.If you've been feeling spiritually exhausted or distracted, this conversation is a gentle reminder that the answer may not be trying harder. It may simply be staying close to the Vine.

How To Abide In Jesus Through Community

    One Church | Houston TX

What if following Jesus was never meant to be a solo journey? In Acts 2, the early church didn't simply gather for a service—they created a community centered on Jesus. They shared life, worshiped together, prayed together, served one another, met practical needs, and helped each other grow. In this message, Pastor Ken Senchal explores why biblical community is essential to abiding in Jesus. Because the people God places around us can help us become more like Christ. But authentic community requires more than simply showing up at church. It requires us to move from attendance to belonging. Pastor Ken explores three obstacles that can keep us from experiencing the kind of community God designed: Pride and self-sufficiency — believing, "I've got this," when God created us to need one another. Busyness and misplaced priorities — allowing our schedules to make spiritual community optional. Past hurts and unresolved offenses — allowing what happened in unhealthy relationships to keep us from the healthy relationships God wants to bring into our lives. The answer isn't isolation. The answer to unhealthy community is healthy biblical community. Ecclesiastes 4 reminds us that when one person falls, another can help them back up—and Scripture assumes that eventually, we all need someone. So the question isn't whether you'll need community. The question is: Will you allow yourself to be part of one?

What happens when we try to follow Jesus without staying connected to Him? In John 15:1-17, Jesus describes Himself as the true vine and His followers as the branches. Cole Ellerbrock explains that lasting spiritual growth does not come from simply trying harder or managing our behavior. It comes from abiding in Jesus, allowing Him to shape our hearts and produce fruit through us.• Jesus is our source of spiritual life, and apart from Him we cannot produce the kind of lasting fruit He desires.• Abiding is more than checking off spiritual habits. It means making our home in Christ's love and continually orienting our hearts and lives toward Him.• As we surrender to Jesus and remain connected to Him, He produces fruit in us that brings glory to God and blesses the people around us.Key Scriptures:John 15:1-17Galatians 5:16-25Philippians 2:12-13Where have you been running on empty or trying to produce spiritual growth on your own? This week, make space to stay connected to Jesus in the ordinary rhythms of your day.
