What Happens When a Megalomaniac Begins to Fail

The Washington Roundtable discusses Donald Trump's recent “explosion of the ego” and tendency toward megalomania, and they consider how the evolution of autocratic regimes in history can help us to predict how the rest of his Presidency may unfold. They are joined by Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a professor of history and Italian studies at New York University, who is the author of “Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present.” The group looks at how, as autocrats' popularity decreases—as Trump's has recently in the polls—these figures develop paranoia and entrench themselves in untenable positions, a phenomenon called “autocratic backfire.” “The key is that they end up constructing a kind of echo chamber. And so they overestimate their own abilities,” Ben-Ghiat says. “They start to believe their own propaganda.”This week's reading: “ ‘If We Don't Have Free Speech, Then We Just Don't Have a Free Country,' ” by Susan B. The New Yorker staff writer Gideon Lewis-Kraus joins Tyler Foggatt to discuss his reporting on Anthropic, the artificial-intelligence company behind the large language model Claude. They talk about Lewis-Kraus's visits to the company's San Francisco headquarters, what drew him to its research on interpretability and model behavior, and how its founding by former OpenAI leaders reflects deeper fissures within the A.I. industry. They also examine what “A.I. safety” looks like in theory and in practice, the range of views among rank-and-file employees about the technology's future, and whether the company's commitment to building safe and ethical systems can endure amid the pressures to scale and compete. This week's reading: “What Is Claude? When you're a high performer, you learn to endure. You adapt, take on more, carry a lot for others, and figure it out. And because nothing breaks, you keep going on momentum and autopilot. But there's a moment that quietly determines your next decade, one that doesn't look like failure or feel like a crisis. It's when the internal alignment between your life and who you are today has quietly expired, and you're still living by rules you wrote for yourself 20 years ago. In this episode, I'm sharing why 'success drift' is far more dangerous than failure for high performers, and the strategic reset that helps you recalibrate before the cost gets higher. This isn't about fixing what's broken, but examining the gap between who you were when you started and who you've become, then updating the internal operating system that's running your life. You'll learn how to recognize the subtle signs that you're drifting instead of intentionally leading, why great leaders pause early before misalignment becomes painful, and the questions that reveal what still fits and what no longer does. Because you don't need a new goal, you need a clear relationship with the life you're already living so you can assess what you're ready for today, not ten years ago. Our mission is to help you become unstoppable, enabling you to do your best work of your career while enjoying more inner peace and freedom. If you've ever been stopped dead in your tracks during exercise by a muscle cramp, you know you'll try almost anything to make it stop. There have been countless theories and remedies put forward to explain and treat a dreaded muscle cramp, but science still has a bit of catching up to do. But there is one particular treatment that has been gaining traction by athletes as a secret weapon to treat cramps. And it is one that sounds more like a pregnancy craving than a sports supplement: it is pickle juice. Is this just another passing fad, or is there actual science behind downing a shot of pickle brine to uncramp a muscle? In this podcast episode, I'll cut through the noise to look at the evidence and the surprising mechanism of how it may work and spoiler alert: it has nothing to do with electrolytes.Links referred to in the podcastPickle juice ingestion in electrically induced muscle cramps  https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19997012AIS fact sheet on pickle juice https://www.ausport.gov.au/ais/nutrition/supplements/group_b/tastants/transient-receptor-potential-channel-agonistsEpisode transcriptTo access the full episode transcript, go to the following link and select the individual podcast episode and then click on the ‘Transcript' tab https://thinkingnutrition.buzzsprout.comConnect with meInstagram doctimcroweFacebook Thinking NutritionX CroweTim

Jay broke down the science behind Buzzed Buddy in a way that was approachable, candid, and refreshingly free of hype. He explained how the product supports alcohol metabolism by targeting the toxins created when we drink, rather than interfering with the buzz itself. Built around a simple three-ingredient formula—milk thistle for liver support, L-cysteine for brain protection, and dihydromyricetin (DHM) to help neutralize acetaldehyde—Buzzed Buddy reflects Jay's philosophy of minimalism and efficacy. No “pixie dust,” no unnecessary additives, just ingredients backed by research and centuries of use. What made Jay Nixon such a compelling guest was not just his knowledge, but his perspective. The conversation naturally expanded into how modern drinkers are rethinking balance, wellness, and sustainability—especially as we age and still want to enjoy great wine, cocktails, and long tasting days. From Napa marathons to Vegas nights, Jay spoke honestly about drinking smarter, not less, and about extending our enjoyment of wine for years to come. His appearance added depth to our ongoing journey through wine, reminding us that taking care of the body is just another way of honoring the experience in the glass.Cheers! You love the music, but being a working musician comes with friction, and this episode tackles it head-on. You dig into the real difference between tribute bands and celebration projects, how to prep when multiple gigs stack up fast, and why anxiety creeps in when preparation gets sloppy. You explore how much rehearsal is enough, when studio versions help versus live recordings, and why fun disappears when expectations are unclear. The big takeaway is simple: intention matters. When you walk into rehearsal with a plan, a personal worklist, and shared expectations, you protect your energy and stay focused on what matters most. That focus is how you keep growing while Always Be Performing. From rehearsals to gig day, you learn how systems save your sanity. You hear why rehearsal recordings only work if someone is actually assigned to listen, how shared calendars prevent chaos, and why group texts quietly sabotage bands. You break down practical tools for managing gigs, promotion, and communication, from punchlist spreadsheets to task masters who own the details. You even get into tech expectations for bandmates and why alignment matters more than gear. The message is clear: externalize the details, reduce decision fatigue, and free your head to show up present, prepared, and confident on stage. 00:00:00 Gig Gab 514 – Monday, December 29th, 2025 December 29th: Tick Tock Day Guest co-host: Richard Page 00:02:03 Richard's got some tribute shows happening The difference between a tribute band and a celebration project Pure Petty, Hot Atlanta, Remedy at Ardmore Music Hall Rocks This Way 00:06:07 Dave's got three different shows to learn and play in 2 weeks The anxiety of preparing for too many gigs at once When prepping celebration shows, do you do all studio? In my annual holiday special for 2025, I examine discrepancies in the gospels relating to Jesus's lineage and parentage, as well as the gospel authors' use of common biblical tropes, their incorporation of prophecy and philosophy, and early church apologists' embrace of comparisons between Christ and pagan mythology, to demonstrate that, though Jesus was a real person, the gospels are crafted narratives, not the histories that biblical literalists make them out to be. The Game Awards have come and gone, leaving in its wake a whirlwind of game announcements, release date reveals, and fresh perspectives on our industry. Indeed, there's something for everyone, a draw for all comers. For starters, what's new? Two Star Wars offerings, Larian's secret Divinity project, Jonathan Blow's long-awaited Order of the Sinking Star, a sequel to Remedy's Control, Toshihiro Nagoshi's anticipated Yakuza rival Gang of Dragon, two Tomb Raider games in the form of a remake and something unseen, a Cyberpunk-like called NO LAW, and even Mega Man 12 -- well, Mega Man Dual Override, anyway -- to keep Colin fed, and more beyond that. And new looks, too, at PlayStation games like Saros and 4:LOOP, as well as Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata, Exodus, and Phantom Blade 0. And then there are the awards themselves, and the pomp and circumstance, and... well... there's a lot to discuss! Plus, we have all of the non-TGA happenings from the past week, too. PlayStation Wrap-Up is live, Deviation's cancelled second party shooter has leaked, London Studio's cancelled multiplayer game has seemingly reemerged under a new team, Call of Duty might be in trouble, and so on. Then: Listener inquiries! Could MLB: The Show succeed on PC with a Football Manager-style experience? Does Netflix really see no value in WB's gaming assets? Is a rumored $1 million for three minutes of advertising at The Game Awards too much? Remember when Dustin called DW from Arthur Double D? Jen Aron is an agroecologist and owner of Blue Raven Farm in Corbett, Oregon. She also worked as a farm educator for seven years with Oregon State University Extension. About five years ago, Jen wrote four articles for Growing for Market Magazine talking about how she built her farm on raw land east of Portland, Oregon, focusing on creating a healthy soil ecosystem and dealing with a whole slew of pest and disease problems along the way.The thread running through Jen's work and her articles is both the wonder and the power of healthy soil to grow healthy crops, and how to deal with the challenges we have in farming through soil-based solutions. Listen to this podcast episode for a deep dive into soil health and hear how Jen is applying what she's learned at the decade mark of Blue Raven Farm. Connect With Guest:Free article by Jen Aron from Growing for Market Magazine: Microbes for land repair: A 5-year eco-farming trialWebsite: blueravenfarm.orgInstagram: @blue_raven_farm Podcast Sponsors: Huge thanks to our podcast sponsors as they make this podcast FREE to everyone with their generous support: Seven Springs Farm Supply is a farm-based supply company focused on serving market gardeners and has been in business for 35 years. DMSO is an "umbrella remedy" capable of treating a wide range of challenging ailments due to its combination of therapeutic properties (e.g., reducing inflammation, improving circulation, and reviving dying cells) DMSO has a unique affinity for the eyes, resulting in it (often spontaneously) treating a wide range of visual disorders that frequently cannot be treated with conventional therapeutic options — including blindness DMSO's ability to heal the skin, moisten tissue, and relax muscles makes it excellent for reducing eye strain. It helps heal a variety of challenging conditions around the eyes, such as blepharitis, styes, psoriasis, burns, bags under the eyes, and eye twitches DMSO's anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties allow it to treat a variety of infections and inflammatory conditions damaging the surface of the eyes (e.g., shingles or keratitis), in many cases facilitating a complete recovery of the eye DMSO's ability to heal tissue from injury also allows it to heal damaged eyes, which in many cases would otherwise require the eye to be removed. This article will review how DMSO is able to treat these conditions and how those healing properties allow it to treat many other challenging eye conditions, such as vision loss, macular degeneration, cataracts, and floaters
