The 1845 Potato Blight Struck Across Northern Europe. Why Did Only Ireland Starve?

In 1845, a novel pathogen attacked potato fields across Europe, from Spain to Scandinavia—but only in Ireland were the effects apocalyptic. At least one million Irish people died, and millions more scattered across the globe, emigrating to new countries and continents. Less than fifty years after the union of Ireland with the rest of Great Britain, the newly formed United Kingdom—the most powerful country in the nineteenth-century world—failed millions of its own citizens, leading to decades of poverty, ecological ruin, and collective trauma. How did this happen? Today’s guest Padraic Scanlan recontextualizes the disaster’s origins, events, and consequences in his new book “Rot: An Imperial History of the Irish Famine.” We situate the Irish Great Famine in a larger history of economic consolidation and exploitation caused by British policies toward Ireland. The blight that decimated the potato plants was biological, but the Famine itself was manmade, caused by the British government’s structures of land ownership, labor, and rent collection. The real tragedy of the Famine wasn’t that the British maliciously intended and propagated starvation, but that their efforts to address the “Irish Question” only exacerbated the problem.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're going back to 2015 (or 2013, if you want to include this game's EARLY early access launch) when they revisited sneaking, but put a different spin on what they'd done before. We're talking Invisible, Inc.On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we chat a little bit about why this game changed its name, and what stealthy aspects they could explore here that they didn't in Mark of the Ninja. We also look at trying to enjoy the journey in difficult games, rather than just seeking the reward; and we chat about how much we enjoy early access vs its importance to devs. Here are some of the things you're gonna hear us chat about in our review: Soliton Radar: The Game; red, yellow, and blue EVERYWHERE; peeking around corners to uncover more of the map; Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine; a camera you don't have full control of; a procedurally-generated table that's just in the way; a slow and exhilarating chase; forecasting the movement of guards; five rewinds; single malt; the wonderfully-balanced and easy-to-use Incognita; Gunpoint; collections of boxy rooms with samey heists that blur together; finding the exit and then deciding what to do next; 72 hours; the auto thump; a ever-rising security level; Metal Gear Acid; breaking your pal out of their cell; an entirely irrelevant plot; some colour in character bios; and generating a campaign where a ko'd enemy stays down for 100 turns. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Invisible, Inc. is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Haunting Ground. on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS

This Day in Legal History: National Referendum on ApartheidOn March 17, 1992, South Africa took a decisive step toward dismantling apartheid through a historic national referendum. White South African voters were asked whether they supported the government's efforts to end apartheid and negotiate a new, democratic constitution. An overwhelming 68.7% voted in favor, signaling broad support for ending over four decades of racial segregation. This referendum provided then-President F.W. de Klerk with the political mandate to continue negotiations with the African National Congress (ANC) and other groups. The result was a major victory for the anti-apartheid movement, which had long fought against the country's system of institutionalized racial oppression. The referendum was limited to white voters, who had historically benefited from apartheid, making their approval a crucial moment in South African history. It paved the way for the country's first multiracial elections in 1994, in which Nelson Mandela was elected president. With this, South Africa officially transitioned from an apartheid state to a democracy, enshrining equal rights for all citizens. The vote also marked the beginning of legal reforms that led to the adoption of a new constitution in 1996. While the end of apartheid did not immediately erase economic and social inequalities, the referendum remains a defining moment in the country's legal and political history. It demonstrated that legal systems, even when designed to uphold injustice, can be reformed through democratic means.A federal judge ruled that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) must reinstate probationary employees it had recently terminated. As a result, the agency is bringing back those workers, along with most term employees, and providing them with back pay. However, term employees with more than two years of service were not reinstated. The CFPB had initially fired 70 enforcement attorneys and up to 100 other employees after acting Director Russell Vought took over in February. The judge's decision is part of a broader legal battle over federal workforce reductions, with similar rulings affecting multiple agencies. Despite this setback, the Trump administration remains committed to deep staffing cuts across federal agencies, with reduction plans already submitted to the Office of Personnel Management. The firings had faced opposition from the National Treasury Employees Union, which reached an agreement with the CFPB to pause additional terminations while another court considers an injunction. The reinstatement process has been messy, with workers unsure of their status and vendor contracts disrupted. However, legally mandated CFPB functions, such as consumer response, are being prioritized for restoration.CFPB Brings Back Probationary Employees After Judge's RulingTrump has escalated his attacks on major law firms, this time targeting Paul Weiss, a firm known for representing top financial institutions and engaging in high-profile pro bono work. His executive order directs federal agencies to cut ties with companies that are Paul Weiss clients and suspend the firm's lawyers' security clearances. The move follows similar actions against Perkins Coie and Covington & Burling. Paul Weiss has deep ties to Wall Street, with clients including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, and Apollo Global Management. Some of these corporate leaders have criticized Trump's tariff policies, potentially influencing his decision to go after the firm.Trump's order highlights Paul Weiss's past work, including its involvement in a lawsuit against the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers over the January 6 Capitol riot. The firm has a long history of civil rights advocacy, from Brown v. Board of Education to LGBTQ+ and voting rights cases. Critics argue Trump's actions are politically motivated, targeting firms with Democratic connections while ignoring their bipartisan donor base. A federal judge previously blocked a similar order against Perkins Coie, and Paul Weiss is expected to mount a strong legal challenge. However, even if the order is overturned, the chilling effect is real—firms risk losing business from clients wary of crossing Trump. Some industry experts believe this could push law firms to unite against political interference, but whether collective action emerges remains uncertain.Trump Fights Paul Weiss as Wall Street Seeks President's EarTrump targets law firm Paul Weiss in order restricting government access | ReutersThe Trump administration deported hundreds of Venezuelan migrants despite a federal judge's order blocking the move. The deportations targeted alleged members of the Tren de Aragua gang, whom the administration labeled as “terrorists.” The White House dismissed the court's authority, arguing that a single judge could not override the president's powers on immigration and national security. Judge James Boasberg had ruled that Trump's use of the Alien Enemies Act to justify the deportations was unlawful, as the law applies only to conflicts “commensurate to war.” Despite this, flights carrying the migrants landed in El Salvador, where President Nayib Bukele publicly mocked the judge's ruling and confirmed the men were being imprisoned.Legal experts, including the ACLU, argue the administration is in open defiance of the court and may have violated constitutional checks and balances. The White House claimed that some migrants had already been deported before the judge's order, but it remains unclear if others were removed afterward. Critics see this as an unprecedented challenge to judicial authority, while Trump defended the deportations, calling the migrants "bad people" and insisting the situation amounted to war. The legal battle over these actions is expected to continue, with calls for the U.S. government to reverse any unlawful removals.Trump administration deports Venezuelans despite court order, says judge has no authorityThe White House is taking an unprecedented role in overseeing the sale of TikTok's U.S. operations, with Vice President JD Vance leading the process. Instead of a traditional investment bank managing the auction, Vance's legal team is directly engaging with bidders and advising on their offers. President Trump has emphasized his control over the sale, claiming multiple groups are interested, while also suggesting the U.S. government could take a 50% stake in TikTok's American assets. The sale process is highly unusual, lacking a defined valuation or clear asset structure, and ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, has shown minimal engagement. Potential buyers, including investors like Frank McCourt and Kevin O'Leary, face an April 5 deadline to reach a deal. However, Beijing's involvement and the possibility that ByteDance could simply shut down TikTok in the U.S. add further uncertainty. While the U.S. government has previously intervened in corporate deals for national security or economic stability reasons, experts question whether TikTok meets such criteria. Trump, who initially sought to ban TikTok, has since acknowledged its role in helping him gain young voters. The app's sale price remains uncertain, largely depending on whether its valuable recommendation algorithm is included. With intense competition among bidders and political interests shaping the process, the outcome remains unpredictable. The White House's unusual role as dealmaker in TikTok sale | ReutersIn a piece I wrote for Forbes this weekend, I lay out what I reckon is the Trump administration's plan to dismantle Social Security and Medicare. The Trump administration's proposal to eliminate taxes for individuals earning under $150,000 sounds appealing at first but carries severe consequences. Social Security and Medicare rely heavily on payroll taxes, which most workers in this income range pay more than income taxes. If these taxes are removed, the programs will be starved of funding, leading to either massive deficit spending, extreme benefit cuts, or a shift to regressive taxes like sales taxes. The proposal, combined with extending the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), would disproportionately benefit the wealthy while leaving the middle class to shoulder the remaining tax burden. The TCJA already made corporate tax cuts permanent while setting individual cuts to expire by 2025, favoring the rich. If this new plan moves forward, those earning just above $150,000 could become the last major tax-paying bracket, while state and local taxes would likely rise to compensate. The ultra-wealthy, who benefited the most from previous tax cuts, are unlikely to pick up the slack. Rather than a tax break for workers, the proposal appears to be a backdoor attempt to dismantle entitlement programs. If no one is paying in, no one gets benefits out—a reality Trump's allies don't want to admit.Trump Administration's No Taxes Under $150k Proposal Is A Disaster This is a public episode. Martin shares his incredible journey—from a successful career as a pilot to taking a leap of faith into the personal development space, despite the risks and doubts from those around him. Throughout the conversation, Martin dives into the core principles of his PIGG framework—Passion, Intention, Gratitude, and Grace—as a foundation for living a fulfilled and purpose-driven life. How To Starve Failure

Kate Hastings Show

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 13, 2025 56:56

Failure doesn't happen overnight—it creeps in when you justify excuses, tolerate low standards, and let hesitation win. Success isn't talent, luck, or motivation—it's discipline, execution, and refusing to negotiate with weakness. If you don't control your time, distractions will. If you don't audit your environment, mediocrity will feel normal. The people who win aren't the ones who feel ready; they're the ones who move anyway, track their progress, and outwork their old selves daily. Every decision either starves failure or feeds it—there is no neutral. Half-effort guarantees failure a front-row seat, but full execution suffocates it before it takes root. So ask yourself: Are you feeding success, or are you feeding failure? Because at the end of the day, you don't get what you want—you get what you demand. Now move.   Phenyx Fit Kate Hastings Podcast  @coachkate1  Mental Health Coach

6 Keys To Protect Your Focus

Send us a textIn this episode, Pastor Allen Bailey shares 6 vital keys that will help to protect your focus. As leaders, we tend to talk everyone else about what they need to be focused on: what life needs to look like, what the ministry of helps needs to look like, how to serve and do all the things in the work of the ministry. If the enemy can get you to focus on the wrong thing, he can end everything you are called to do. God called you to be a visionary and to cast the vision. Believe for others to come alongside with you to accomplish those things.  #1 Recognize that broken focus will destroy your dreams. Anything that has distracted you from your assignment is designed by the enemy to steal your vision. Your laser focus should be on the assignment that God has given you and how to do your part. #2 You must take personal responsibility for your focus. No one else can fully protect you except for the Holy Spirit. If you are not focused on your assignment and spending time with God on what you are called to do and the next steps to take, then you put yourself in a position of being uncovered and missing the protective armor in certain places. Ultimately, God wants you to grow in Him, not in the ministry. If you grow in Him, the ministry will grow. #3 Control the teaching and the music that enters into your heart. It is vitally important what you allow in your eye and ear gates. Those things will go in your heart and will affect you. God doesn't want you to be distracted by the trivial.  #4 Keep continuous praise and worship on your lips, in your home and going into your ears at all times. What are you listening to in your car or at home? What are you allowing to seep into your heart? What goes into the good soil of your heart will manifest. Be very cautious of what you are allowing in your heart.  #5 Starve wrong friendships. You don't need friendships in your life that don't feed what God has called you to do.  #6 Pursue and permit only those relationships that will increase your focus on your assignment. Focus on the things God has called you to. Too many times we get caught up in the weeds. When we get our focus right, things will begin to work out the right way.

Darrell Castle talks about debt and the Trump administration's effort to control it. Transcription / Notes DOWNSIZING TO STARVE THE BEAST Hello, this is Darell Castle with today's Castle Report. This is Friday, the 10th day of January in the year of our Lord 2025. I will be talking about debt and the potential for disaster if it isn't somehow tamed. Donald Trump is at least paying lip service to it with his creation of DOGE or the Department of Government Efficiency. Donald Trump has appointed Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to head a new department of government which he calls the Department of Government Efficiency. That is an attractive name but if flies in the face of the political trend  that has existed for at least 50 years. Before that time, the government had some accountability since its wars, its tax cuts, etc. had to be paid for and it had to have enough gold deposits to cover all of it. Once the dollar's ties to gold were removed in 1971, the government no longer had any restraints on its spending. A government of the people and by the people needs some restraints because without them human nature will control the politicians elected to serve the people. When a politician discovers that he can achieve reelection thus retaining power by spending the resources of others or promising to do so he will do it or at least that has been the trend since 1971. A responsible government recognizes its limits and it spends only what it can raise in taxes. If the federal government were responsible the United States would not have the 36 trillion of debt that it has today. People are alarmed at the size of the debt but not many want their pet projects or their own largesse to be reduced so I wonder if DOGE will have an opportunity to succeed. It seems that the goals of Elon Musk and Donald Trump are headed on a collision course. If Musk gets his way, at least the way as he has described it, then we should get some positive results. There could be lower deficits which should bring lower inflation, lower interest rates and a far less expensive and less powerful government. We might even expect a business revival with the return of manufacturing to the U.S. Mr. Homan's efforts on the border would ensure the departure of many murderers, rapists, torturers, child molesters, terrorists and assorted lunatics who now reside here illegally at government expense. The Republican elite, and now that includes Donald Trump, may just have a different agenda. Trump has just spent 9 years and a lot of money to gain power including a Republican majority in both houses. Those majorities will not want to become less powerful but instead they will want to use that power to take more power and wealth from the American people who are supposed to hold it. That is human nature and the prevailing political trend. The hearts of mankind are black and desperately wicked the bible tells us and when power and money are unrestrained the humans who have it will use and abuse it. Right now, Donald Trump is the most powerful man in the world and he seems to be enjoying it immensely. My guess is that he will not want to share the power with a billionaire from South Africa for very long, but I could easily be wrong and if so it wouldn't be the first time. The President-Elect seems to enjoy conducting foreign policy even before he is inaugurated, but I suppose power abhors a vacuum and so somebody will execute foreign policy or at least that is the way he seems to see it. He is a businessman and a negotiator and right now he has the power and he is trying to establish with friend and foe alike that business will be conducted differently in the future. Bloomberg tells us that he warned the European Union that its exports will get hit with US tariffs if European Union countries don't buy more American oil and gas. He posted on Truth Social about that statement: “I told the European Union that they must make up their tremendous defici...
