We all have our most comfortable spots. Perhaps an overstuffed chair or a corner of the couch at the end of a long day at work. Maybe even our bed with lots of blankets on a cold night. Comfort can be a great place to fall back into when we're tired or spent. But, have you ever considered how comfort might be a bad thing? In a world where comfort is often our highest priority, we often avoid paths and choices which make us more uncomfortable. So, does following Jesus require my discomfort? In this message, Pastor Scott Savage unpacks one of Cornerstone's core values known as Getting Uncomfortable for Prescott and the World. He shares why it is impossible to follow Jesus without getting uncomfortable.

Sermon: 1 Peter 5:6-14 Scriptures: Psalm 136:1-4, Psalm 91:1-16, Romans 5:17-18, 1 Peter 5:6-14 The post Sunday Service November 26th, 2023 first appeared on Cornerstone.
The prophet Habakkuk asks timeless questions of God, “How can you tolerate evil?”, “Where is justice?”, “Why are the wicked allowed to prosper?” God responds to these questions, but his answers will astound. How can we hope to live when evil abounds and God looks on? In the second of three sermons through this book, we will wait with Habakkuk on the watchtower to hear God's reply.
Paul Wolfe is Author of “Human Beings First - Practices for Empathetic, Expressive Leadership” and a Human First Leadership advocate. Paul was the long-term CHRO of Indeed with a seasoned career in HR leadership. Paul shares how he transferred skills from Customer Service to Human Resources and built his expertise across different cultures and industries. He explains the value of transparency during periods of transformation and offers new career paths options as we transition from career ladders. Paul describes why flexibility is important for every employee and the difference human first leadership makes. TAKEAWAYS [02:35] Paul goes to college with a full scholarship but doesn't like it which displeases his mother, a teacher. [03:45] Paul leaves college, starts working, then joins American Express and finishes his degree in parallel. [05:47] CitiSearch.com's CEO and Founder ask Paul to move from Customer Service to Human Resources. [06:30] Paul agrees to try the HR role for six months, transfers his skills and enjoys the new role. [07:50] CitySearch and other companies go under Ticketmaster's umbrella and Paul takes on an international role. [09:54] Working three months in each country opens Paul's eyes about work and other cultural differences. [11:10] Paul's philosophy as a CHRO: People get their work done well and clients are taken care of. Timing and surf/walk breaks are not a concern. [12:03] Recognizing the realities of people working in other countries challenges our assumptions. [12:50] Paul moves to Match.com initially to run both HR and Customer Service! [14:05] Moving again within IAC, Paul helps Cornerstone build up an engineering group and go digital. [16:10] Transparency is key during periods of change to explain what's happening and why. [18:04] During the pandemic, with almost no data to inform decisions, Paul increases transparency and discusses what information supports the latest direction. [20:29] Organizations are living, growing beings with a culture generated by the environment that is everyone's responsibility. [22:09] At Conde Nast, Paul explores a non-tech industry and checks he is good at his job! [24:39] As a storied, family-based corporation, Conde Nast gives Paul new insights about culture. [26:35] Paul is offered the top HR job at Indeed, but he turns it down. He doesn't want to move again. [27:36] Six months later, Indeed still wants Paul to head up HR, agreeing he can stay in NYC. [29:41] Indeed only uses Indeed to recruit, experiencing what its customers go through. [30:36] Paul finds everyone focused on protecting Indeed's culture. [31:18] Growth is strong, the workforce expands from 1000 to 12,000 and attrition stays low. [31:41] Paul's first epiphany about human first leadership happens during a Zoom call in 2020. [33:44] We are all the same before we become different. [34:08] Paul does a “Dig” and discovers “Better” is the word driving his personal operating system. [35:08] To make the world better, Paul leaves Indeed to write a book and spread the message. [36:42] Employee flexibility is key. Paul believes in treating people like adults. [37:48] If executives believe hybrid working is negatively impacting collaboration, how were they measuring collaboration effectiveness before? [38:31] Why not be transparent: describe metrics, trial a plan, and review the data in six months? [39:02] What about asking employees to discover the range of situations they are dealing with and using that information to develop policies? [40:52] How much (better) were people really working when in the office at their desk?! [41:31] Flexibility for employees who have to work onsite—giving them equitable options. [42:18] Managers are not great at performance reviews, so making remote working a reward for performance is complicated. [44:30] How leaders can help employees deal with ongoing changes, especially with many unknowns. [45:38] Transparency about AI and its potential impact supports change management. [46:35] Individual contributor career paths present new options for those who don't like or aren't good at managing, which has been developed in engineering but not other areas. [48:52] Let's create two different career paths—a leadership track and an individual contributor track. [51:51] Engagement, upskilling, career development, and performance should be ongoing discussions. [56:20] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: We are all human beings first. We are all dealing with a lot and self-care for leaders and everybody is important. What's more, no one has all the answers. It's okay—as a leader--to say I don't know. It's ok to be vulnerable. IF you have curated a good team, they are going to rally. The better solution comes from collective thoughts from different perspectives. RESOURCES Paul Wolfe on LinkedIn Paul Wolfe on X Paul's book “Human Beings First - Practices for Empathetic, Expressive Leadership” Paul's website QUOTES (edited) “I would always hope that I'm open enough that my perspective on something, my truth on something, can be changed by experiencing something or talking to somebody or hearing a different idea.” “I think leaders in general, not just HR leaders, need to get more in the mindset of every organization is this kind of living and growing being. It needs nurturing, it needs care taking. You can call it culture. You can call it whatever you want to. But that's not HR leader's responsibility. It's everyone's responsibility.” “The more that you create this transparency, you start to set the stage for psychological safety within an organization and generate ongoing two-way communication—employees to leaders, leaders to employees, employees to employees. And you end up with better ideas, better solutions to problems, and a more kind of engaged and informed group of people. “ “I've always run my HR organizations with this simple philosophy, treat people like adults more often, not they will act like adults. And the two to 5% that will never act like adults you deal with separately.” “We all have different needs. So the idea of one size fits all is not right anymore. It's one size breaks all.” “Let's figure out where your skill gaps are. We'll agree on those. Some of the stuff you're going to have to go get on your own and I'll point you in the right direction. I'll make sure that I give you interesting projects that love that start to tap into those areas that you don't have expertise in. And I'll block and tackle for you because a leader's job is to block and tackle most of the time.” “My hope with performance, career, and engagement, it just becomes this ongoing conversation that happens.”
As God's children, we are called to repentance and salvation; confession and belief; belonging, obedience, and holiness. As we follow Jesus, we are all called to walk worthy, to be conformed to His likeness, and to focus on our future hope in Him. But in 1 Peter, we read about God's calling to the church as a whole. The Apostle Peter wrote this letter to several small churches scattered throughout Asia Minor, encouraging them in their salvation, the Christian life, and their communal identity. Peter compares the church to “living stones” and a “spiritual house.” He exhorts the faithful to draw close to the Lord (v. 4), the living Stone risen from the dead. Peter describes Jesus as “rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him,” a description to which his audience would relate. Peter then calls them “living stones” as well—a “spiritual house” and a “holy priesthood” with one identity and one purpose, built on the cornerstone of Christ. Peter draws on three Old Testament passages (Isa. 28:16, Ps. 118:22, and Isa. 8:14) that also used this metaphor. Those who believe in Jesus recognize Him as the precious Cornerstone, the foundation of the church upon whom our faith is built. But those who reject Him stumble and receive judgment. As a result of their unity as a single spiritual house, Peter identified these churches across Asia Minor as “a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God.” They were to be a cohesive, collective temple, a place to gather and worship together, as well as a presence of light and praise in the world, “that you may declare the praises of him who called [kaleo] you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (v. 9). >> How does Peter's description of the church compare to what we experience today? Consider how Peter's description of the church's calling or purpose might change our own expectations.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In today's episode, Charlie offers a deep dive into the integral role of core values, not just in establishing a company's culture, but in steering its path toward sustained success. Charlie provides context in explaining how Purpose, Vision, Mission, and Core Values work together and each serve a unique role. Purpose, as the heart of the business, provides the organizational WHY. Vision offers the aspirational GPS coordinates for WHERE (future direction) a company is going or WHO (identity) it wishes to be in the future. Mission then is WHAT a company does and foundationally supports the Vision. Then the Core Values represent the behaviors or guiding principles for HOW a company acts and treats others. Charlie unpacks Broad River's five core values: - Integrity - Personal Excellence - Customer Satisfaction - Collaboration (which was originally Teamwork but then changed to break down silos) - Innovation Core Values provide the guardrails to shape organizational behavior and a company's culture. They are the backdrop for how people treat each other within the organization as well as outside of the organization with customers, vendors, partners, and other organizations. Broad River's Core Values have served as a cornerstone within the Company for several years. They have served the Company well in communicating the guidining principles that are most important to its Memory Makers. However, there are several other potential values that have emerged over the years that the Company has come to adopt, embrace, and be known for. To that end, Charlie discusses what some of these potential new core values could be and suggests that the current leadership team may be reviewing and studying the existing Core Values in 2024 to determine if any edits or additions should be made. Tune in to gain valuable insights and perspectives on how these foundational principles resonate within Broad River Retail's journey. We continue our series in the Gospel of Luke, one of four eyewitness accounts of Jesus' words and works. In them we learn of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection to rescue a people of his own from among the nations—even us. Today, John the Baptist, along with God the Father, remind us that Jesus is not reducible to a single attribute. In fact, the Real Jesus is far more complex and glorious and worthy and all-satisfying than we might expect.

Fixed income investments are subject to various other risks including changes in credit quality, market valuations, liquidity, prepayments, early redemption, corporate events, tax ramifications, and other factors. Lower rated securities are subject to greater credit risk, default risk, and liquidity risk.Bank loans typically have below investment-grade credit ratings and may be subject to more credit risk, including the risk of nonpayment of principal or interest. Most bank loans have floating coupon rates that are tied to short-term reference rates like the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR), so substantial increases in interest rates may make it more difficult for issuers to service their debt and cause an increase in loan defaults. Let's get to the basics Around the Workstand - your website, what you're presenting to the shopping public, why it matters (search, conversion, credibility)Your website is the cornerstone of your marketing, the first thing most new customers see about your business, and how it is presented determines to a large extent what you will sell (or not sell) online AND in your store. Get it right! If you aren't displaying what matters to you, what value proposition your store offers, what services you offer, products consumers care about, you just can't win search and you can't matter to most consumers. The goal is to win searches - for every person who just decides to wander into a store and see what's there, there are hundreds or even thousands who never saw or considered a store because they have poor or no search visibility. Google matters. When consumers do find your website, will they be impressed and convinced of your professionalism? A catalog full of products with prices and availability BUT no way to purchase them is a gigantic roadblock and likely a red flag to shoppers. They won't just decide to drive down to your store to find out if they can buy what they want, they'll simply move on to a result that offers what they want in the way they want it.What to do. Ensure your website is shoppable in a sensible way. Categories grouped, navigation is simple and intuitive, catalog is accurate, services are clear, and pricing and availability are clear for everything you offer. All content should look good on all devices.Payment options and delivery options should be as plentiful as you can manage.Ask for help. Many believe we first learn about Jesus in Matthew's nativity story. But Messianic prophecies are central to the Book of Isaiah, when the Lord promises to one day bring a comforting king. His peaceful reign stands in stark contrast to the oppressive dictators of that era. Those rulers promoted sin and idolatry, leading numerous Jews away from God. Isaiah urges them to repent and avoid God's corrective measures, all while reassuring them that His mercy is available to all. Come join Horizon at the Equipping Services as we learn about Isaiah's Comforter and the enduring truths of grace and peace.

We continue our series in the Gospel of Luke, one of the four eyewitness accounts of Jesus' words and works. In them we learn of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection to rescue a people of his own from among the nations—even us. Today, John the Baptist re-enters the story with a surprising, provocative message, declaring that “We must bear fruits in keeping with repentance” as he prepares the way for Jesus, the Messiah. Are you bearing repentant fruit, in Jesus?

Isaiah is a challenging book to study and even more challenging to understand. Many people avoid it because of its length, its prophetic language or its difficulty to understand without historical knowledge. These are certainly challenges, but Isaiah is too important a book NOT to read. Yes, it can be challenging, long and difficult to grasp in context, but this study will take you through that and help guide you on your way to becoming familiar with some of the most important prophecies in the Bible. This study will cover the first half of Isaiah. Because there is no cohesive narrative within Isaiah; it is a collection of prophetic words to various nations at different times; we are breaking it up in half to make it easier to digest. In this study, we will look at Isaiah chapters 1-33. From this study, you will gain the necessary historical background, insights into what has been fulfilled and what has not and all that you need to keep reading and know God's Word through the Prophet Isaiah. -----------LINKS----------Support 10WB on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/10weekbibleThe 10 Week Bible - http://www.10WeekBible.comTwitter: @DarrenHibbs - https://twitter.com/DarrenHibbsSign up for my newsletter - http://www.darrenhibbs.comGet a copy of the 10 Week Bible Study today - https://www.amazon.com/Darren-Hibbs/e/B00B4I47CE/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=sl2&tag=darrenhcom0a-20&linkId=401f3d79974c70929517936977e32df9My other YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChUU0XHSHuhSyN8qk-7efYgSupport the show

Pastor Stephen and Alina Sato sit down with Pastor Scott to share the way's God has met them in the midst of a year filled with shocking diagnoses.
This morning we continue our series in the Gospel of Luke, one of four eyewitness accounts of Jesus' words and works. In them we learn of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection to rescue a people of his own from among the nations—even us. Today, he visits Jerusalem with his parents for Passover as a 12 year old boy and is unknowingly left behind. This unlikely stage becomes the backdrop for his first recorded words and awareness of his identity as the unique Son of God.
