LOBCAST IS BACK. We're pivoting a little to a focus on music, exploring the stories of some cool musical people doing cool musical things. Kicking it off is longtime friend of the lob STELLA DONNELLY. PLUS a brief Lobster speed round and hot take sesh.
SPECIAL EDITION LOBCAST! Welcome friends to a slightly different - and way more important - episode of the Lobcast. We sit down with filmmaker Sam Austin, and [legitimate hero] Trav Saunders. At 21 months old, Trav & partner Fi’s son Patch was diagnosed with autism. After years of full-time therapy, with mixed results for Patch - and the family struggling - they made the call to head out on an adventure. Biking from the West coast to East of the mighty USA, the Saunders family decided that things needed to change and some disruption would be good for team morale; and the change of scenery and new experiences might bring about some positives for Patch too. 5600kms later, and some beautiful growth for Patch, the gang are doing it again - this time on the Mawson Trail from the Flinders Ranges to Adelaide - to make a film, an educational resource for schools, and spread the word on empowering children with autism. The narrative around embracing autism and the positive capabilities of kids and adults with autism needs to change. Trav, Fiona, Patch, and Sam are making it happen. Have a listen, get on board, and donate to their campaign below. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/428257810/school-of-the-road-autism-and-adventure-documentar
Lobcast knocking down episode six! KAPOW. ‘Laneway Activation’ has without a doubt been the biggest buzz phrase of the Adelaide CBD for the last couple of years. It’s a chaff term, but the small bars popping up have changed the game for our city’s nightlife and general reputation. Josh Baker - Coffee Branch, Clever Little Tailor, Pink Moon Saloon/Deli, Whistle UND Flute, & most recently the reboot of the Port Admiral Hotel - is effectively the Godfather of the movement. We deep dive on his early days in hospitality, the transition to coffee and small bars, Adelaide business, relationships with landlords, working with friends, rollerblading, and the best Regent Arcade Romano impersonation in life. PLUS (the most lit, lol-filled) LOBSTER SPEED ROUND + HOT TAKES. **a few cuss words in the mix, so be responsible**
POW! Lobcast episode five. World-class bands playing intimate shows in suburban back gardens? Welcome to the Porch Sessions. Welcome to a special edition Lobcast - LIVE from the Adelaide Beer & BBQ Festival. We sit down and chew the fat with the hottest chef imports for the weekend. Up first, from Toronto, top dawg at Parts & Labour restaurant, and host of VICE's Dead Set On Life - Matty Matheson. We deep dive into his early days of cooking, sustainability in the Toronto restaurant scene, hardcore music, humility in the wake of his heart attack (at 29 years old), his future cooking frozen seafood on a boat, and some tips on how to improve the Peri-Peri Chicken at Africola. We then follow up with Melbourne's finest. Shannon Martinez - Smith & Daughter's culinary guru and one of Australia's leading vegan chefs, & Mike Patrick - American BBQ maestro, and big cat at Fancy Hank's. Coming in from polar opposite ends of the food spectrum, we talk the rise of both of their respective fields, the importance of quality service, consumption sustainability, Melbs vs Sydney, the rise of Adelaide, personal life lessons, and some home town hot takes (hello Adelaide Smith & Daughters, and a Fancy Hank's fried chicken joint!). *a MASSIVE thank you to Africola Duncan for organising this special edition popup Lobcast. WE LUV U. xxx
Lobcast episode four! We’re back in the Adelaide Arcade Lobcast studios, deep diving with street artist Peter Drew. You've probably seen Peter’s posters around the place - either a “Real Aussies Say Welcome” or a rather badass looking Afghan in a turban, rocking a fierce moustache, and the word AUSSIE emblazoned below. We get stuck into his early days as an artist, the overlapping worlds of graffiti and street art, the commercialisation of the scene, politics, the variety of response in public art interpretation, when diversity and equality collide, and what it means to be Australian. Plus the lobster speed round and a few hot takes!
Lobcast episode three! We’re coming live, mid-sitting, from the recently announced number one restaurant in South Australia - the mighty Africola. As we feast, we’re joined by the South African guru himself - head chef, creative maestro, and world-class trash talker - Duncan Welgemoed. While he roams the restaurant, we deep dive into his early days in the kitchen, the two iterations of Africola, sustainability of the restaurant scene in Adelaide, work/ life balance, Masterchef, Katy Perry, his future in winemaking, being adopted into an Indigenous community, and laying the smackdown on a sucka NT supermarket owner. The biggest thank you to Duncan, Nikki, and all the team at Africola for being such a warm, open, and hospitable crew, and for letting a couple of hacks like us interrupt their Wednesday night dinner. **in true chef spirit there are a few cuss words, so prepare accordingly.
In episode two of the Slick Lobster podcast we sit down with Amanda Blair, the official queen (yaaass kween) of Adelaide radio. We deep dive into the changing landscape of our fine city and the mentality of its residents, the radio industry, friendship with Julia Gillard, our love of The Salvation Army, authoring a book on Pauline Hanson, prison reform, and stitching up Heath Ledger. Plus a few hot takes. *on occasion there may be a couple of cuss words thrown out, so earplugs for the kiddos.
Welcome to episode one of the Slick Lobster podcast. We kick off series one with Durkhanai Ayubi, owner of Ebenezer Place eatery, and East End favourite Kutchi Deli Parwana - purveyors of Adelaide’s finest Afghan cuisine. We delve into the history of Family Ayubi, early life as first generation migrants, the idea of career, authenticity, and the importance of food not only in Adelaide’s future, but as a centrepiece of our increasingly independent - and often isolated - culture.
