Welcome back to ARTMATTERS: The Podcast for ArtistsOn this week's episode I'm joined by Brittany Fanning.Brittany Fanning graduated from the University of north Virginia, and moved to South Korea in 2015. She spent seven years painting the neighborhoods around her, drawn particularly to the contrast between new Brutalist structures and traditional hanoks. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2022 her work shifted toward the city's architecture, flora, and fauna. Fanning  began exhibiting in Korea in 2018 and has since shown at Steve Turner and The Lodge in Los Angeles, Galerie BHAK in Seoul, as well as Mindy Solomon in Miami and Artemin in Taipei. Her work has been featured in Vogue, Portray Mag, and Type 7. She is currently based in New York.I joined Brittany Fanning in her studio, surrounded by rolled and unrolled canvases and at least one painting she's threatening to destroy. We get into her process: the impatience that launches a painting before the plan exists, and the small linen studies she uses to dig herself out of the compositional holes that impatience creates. We also talk about her push away from photo reference, her complicated relationship with the figure, and her black-and-white paintings. And then we get into the art world stuff: galleries that don't pay, galleries that disappear, and why Brittany has made a bit of a tradition of calling people out on Instagram right around the holidays. It's a hell of a conversation, articulate, transparent, and resilient. Without spoiling it, I'll just say: good luck to any gallery that tries to mess with her.Listener note: Brittany's candor about her experiences with Pictorum and OTI inspired me to share my own, with Primary Projects in Miami. It felt like the right time.Support this podcast by clicking HERE and becoming a Patreon Supporter! If you're enjoying the podcast so far, please rate, review, subscribe and SHARE ON INSTAGRAM!  If you have an any questions you want answered, write in to artmatterspodcast@gmail.comhost: Isaac Mannwww.isaacmann.cominsta: @isaac.mannguest: Brittany Fanningwww.brittanyfanning.cominsta: @brittanyfanningThank you as always to ARRN, the Detroit-based artist and instrumentalist, for the music.

Chuck Todd delivers a deeply personal, harrowing account of being inside the Washington Hilton when a gunman charged through security at the White House Correspondents' Dinner — and uses the experience to issue a sobering warning about the political tinderbox America has become. He walks listeners through the night minute by minute: arriving through the back entrance to avoid protests, passing through magnetometers, the moment about a minute after the waitstaff emerged when gunfire erupted two floors above the ballroom and everyone immediately dropped to the ground, the realization that the shots weren't inside the room itself, the lockdown, senior leadership being escorted out, and journalists in the room immediately going to work to find out what happened. He recounts exiting through the kitchen and out a back door, running into the Fettermans on the street, and eventually finding an Uber home — a night he says he will never forget. He then steps back and argues that high-profile shootings have become weirdly normal but are not isolated incidents — they are the predictable culmination of rhetoric and events in an era where Americans are growing dangerously comfortable with political violence. He insists that "did Trump cause this?" is the wrong question, but argues that presidents don't just govern, they set the tone for the country — and Trump has publicly celebrated the deaths of political enemies, used existential language that frames everything through grievance, and views being targeted as personal validation. He warns that escalation invites escalation; that when everything becomes existential, anything becomes justifiable; and that previous leaders knew how to turn the temperature down while Trump deliberately pits Americans against each other. On the security questions, he dentifies two specific loopholes the shooter exploited — the lack of security on Amtrak (which he took from California) and his ability to stay at the Hilton as a regular hotel guest — but emphasizes that this was not a security failure: the screening worked exactly as intended, the gunman never made it down the stairs to the ballroom, and there's no such thing as 100% security against a determined lone wolf actor. He closes by flatly rejecting Trump's attempt to use the incident to justify his planned White House ballroom project, calling it what it is: a vanity play that has nothing to do with security and everything to do with ego, in a moment when the country desperately needs leadership willing to lower the temperature rather than turn it up. Finally, Chuck hops into the ToddCast Time Machine to revisit an event that further eroded Americans’ trust in their government… a U2 spy plane being shot down by the Soviet Union and the government lying directly to the public about the nature of the mission. He also answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment” and weighs in on the NFL Draft. Thank you Wildgrain for sponsoring. Send us Fan MailThe Wild West didn't run on courage alone. It ran on nerve, repetition, and a cold understanding that “the law” often arrived as a Colt revolver, not a badge. We take you into the real world behind the legends of Old West gunfighters, using sharp stories and historical color drawn from Wyatt Earp, Frontier Marshal by Stuart M. Lake, plus hard-edged accounts connected to Bat Masterson and Wild Bill Hickok. We start with the famous Hickok vs Tutt gunfight in Springfield, Missouri, then pull apart the movie version of Western duels. Most fights weren't staged showdowns with one heroic shot. They were sudden, messy, close, and dangerous to everyone nearby, with black powder smoke hanging in the air and outcomes unclear until the shooting stopped. From there, we zero in on what serious gunmen actually practiced: how they wore their six-shooters, how they tuned their triggers, and why “fast” only matters when it stays accurate.Wyatt Earp's most surprising lesson drives the heart of the conversation: the winner usually took his time. Not slow time, but a calm mind in a split fraction of a second. We also explain why fanning the hammer and shooting from the hip earned contempt from proficient gunfighters, how two-gun carry was more about a reserve than a stunt, why notched guns are largely a myth that spread through storytelling, and how safety habits like keeping an empty chamber under the hammer saved lives. If you love Western history, Dodge City legends, and the true tactics behind frontier gunfights, subscribe, share the show with a fellow history fan, and leave a review with your biggest “Hollywood got it wrong” moment.Support the showIf you'd like to buy one or more of our fully illustrated dime novel publications, you can click the link I've included.

Drawing on my background in brand strategy and research mixed with my psychology training, I bring together history, culture, and real stories to highlight some of our dysfunction.Listen in to learn about the lost art of ritual and ceremony, what happens when moral clarity goes away, what's worse than keeping up with the Joneses, what honor actually looks like, female entitlement versus female support and admiration, and much more:References:Matrimony by Stephen JenkinsonThe Way of Men by Jack Donovan'Inside the Manosphere' by Jack Donovan: https://mrjackdonovan.substack.com/p/...'Sacred or For Sale: Why We Can't Have Both' by Anya Shakh: https://anyashakh.substack.com/p/sacr...TIMESTAMPS:00:00 — Intro & Episode Overview 01:09 — Reading "Matrimony" & Bursting Into Tears 02:42 — Sacredness vs. The Marketplace 04:21 — The Netflix Manosphere Documentary 05:09 — Symptoms of a Dying Culture 07:10 — The Manosphere as a Clown Show 08:52 — Platforming Caricatures of Men 10:37 — The Gaping Hole of Support for Young Men 11:04 — Why Young Men Listen to Toxic Influencers 13:43 — Honoring Chief Warrant Officer Eric Slover 15:45 — The Humble Local Gym Trainer 17:46 — Quiet Masculine Strength & Integrity 20:13 — Ayaan Hirsi Ali on What Women Innately Want 20:57 — The Feminine Frequency & Fanning the Flame 21:36 — The Story of Rabbi Akiva & Rachel 23:56 — Modern Female Entitlement 26:14 — Singles Events: Entitlement vs. Lack of Courage 30:43 — The Post-MeToo Dating Marketplace 31:17—Outro___________________________Beyond the podcast I'm a coach. A lot has happened in payments over the last 25 years and there could be no better way to celebrate the progress of the industry and the firm than to talk to the people who played such seminal roles in shaping both: In this episode, we speak with Glenbrook's three founding partners - Carol Coye Benson, Scott Loftesness, and Allen Weinberg.  Listen in as they recall the early days of the firm, discuss how Glenbrook's strategy work expanded to form our education and global practices, consider the evolution of the "payments professional", and reflect on payments industry shifts over their years both in and out of Glenbrook.

This week we're in hygge mode, uncovering traumas in our generational home with the host of This Had Oscar Buzz, Joe Reid! One of the breakout Oscar films of the year is Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value, a warm, realist Norwegian film about a difficult but brilliant director (Stellan Skarsgard), his two daughters (Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), and an American actress cast in the auteur's new film (Elle Fanning). All four performances earned Oscar nominations, along with nominations for Best Picture, Best International Feature, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Screenplay. Sentimental Value also highlights a recurring phenomenon in Hollywood, wherein the Academy will pass over a director's breakout film but shower the follow-up with nominations. In Trier's case, his previous film The Worst Person in the World received nominations for Best International Film and Original Screenplay but, in our opinion, deserved many more. We try to break down how and why this happens, whether films about filmmaking have an innate appeal to Oscar voters, how Fanning's star power helps bridge the international gap for voters, and the film itself, including its deft intermingling of artistic expression and sublimated generational trauma.  With Joe's guidance, we also check in on some of the Oscar-buzziest films of the year that didn't pan out, check in on the state of the acting category race and some potential upsets, and celebrate The Secret Agent's breakout star Tânia Maria and her new role as Burger King spokeswoman. What does it mean to be an American when your family has been here longer than America itself? Lisa Fanning, a board member of the National Genealogical Society and DNA expert, has spent decades uncovering a story so layered, so uniquely American that it stopped me in my tracks. She descends from four of the six families who packed up a covered wagon and caravaned from North Carolina in the 1820s to build a thriving free Black settlement in southern Indiana called Lost Creek. But the story doesn't start there. It starts with an enslaved woman named Kate Anderson, a contested will, and 600 acres of prime Virginia land that was rightfully theirs. Land that is now the site of a U.S. Naval installation. This is also our 100th episode, and I can't think of a better story to mark the milestone. Some families don't just live through history. They are history.〰️

What happens when obedience to God feels risky? In this episode, we explore the tension between love and fear — especially when someone we care about senses a calling that could cost them comfort, security, or even safety. It’s one thing to say we trust God. It’s another to release someone we love into His hands. Looking at Paul’s final encouragement to Timothy, written from a prison cell under Emperor Nero’s brutal reign, we see something remarkable: Paul doesn’t urge caution. He doesn’t prioritize survival. Instead, he tells Timothy to fan into flame the very gift that could invite persecution. So what gave Paul that kind of courage? And how do we cultivate it today? What We Discuss The internal conflict between protection and obedience Why fear often disguises itself as wisdom Paul’s deep relationship with Timothy — and his even deeper trust in Christ The historical reality of persecution under Nero What it means to “fan into flame” your spiritual gifts How eternal perspective fuels present-day courage Why intimacy with Christ produces boldness instead of timidity This episode is sponsored by Trinity Debt Management. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. - 2 Timothy 1:5-7, NIV Years ago, my extended family experienced a period of panic after my younger brother told us that he was praying about trying to get a job in North Korea so that he could share the gospel. I don’t remember if the country was open to this at the time, but he hoped to teach English and use his role to build relationships that could allow for spiritual conversations. My mind immediately flooded with thoughts of him in a North Korean prison, tortured for his faith–if not executed. I wanted to tell him all the reasons this was a terrible idea. By God’s grace, however, I stayed silent, knowing the greater danger was in encouraging him to deny God’s voice and choose self-protection over obedience. To our relief, he ultimately sensed the Lord leading him in a different direction. But that season really challenged me to investigate the depths of my belief, trust in Christ, and commitment to His mission. I wonder if Paul, the first-century church planter who wrote the book from which today’s passage came, ever wrestled with this inner conflict. He cared for Timothy, his mentee, deeply, and appeared to be closer to this young man than anyone else with whom he worshiped or served. He even referred to him as his “true child in the faith” (1 Timothy 1:2, NASB). Therefore, there must have been a part of him, perhaps a large part, that wanted to keep Timothy safe. Keep in mind, this was during the time of Nero, one of the cruelest emperors in Roman history, responsible for the horrific death of numerous Christians. Paul understood persecution. He’d been stoned, flogged, beaten with rods, and imprisoned on numerous occasions. He’d also lost relationships with many people he’d once held dear. Plus, he wrote from a dark, damp prison cell, also known as a dungeon, awaiting a likely execution. Considering all that, reflect on Paul’s words in verse 6 again: “For this reason–” pointing back to his sincere faith, his rock-solid foundation in Christ. “For this reason,” he wrote, “I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands” (2 Timothy 1:6, NIV). Had I been Paul, I suspect my letter to Timothy would’ve looked quite different, likely filled with all the ways he could survive the evil invading the ancient world. Perhaps, had he come to me as my brother had, I would’ve remained silent (as I did regarding North Korea), but I’m not sure I would’ve had the courage and strength to tell him to actively feed the very thing that could, and more likely than not would, result in death. (According to tradition, he was in fact martyred in 80 AD, presumably fifteen years after Paul’s execution. Intersecting Life & Faith: Reading Paul’s possible last words to his beloved friend and spiritual son, and reflecting on my typical reactions when those I love suffer, I’m left with an important question: What enabled Paul to respond to their intensely hostile circumstances with such faith? We discover the answer when we read his other letters. He maintained a close relationship with Christ and experienced such fulfillment from that relationship that he was able to say, “For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21, NIV). His ongoing connection with the Lord and his practice of praying constantly also provided clarity and guidance for His most difficult circumstances and positioned him to receive God’s comfort. In his letter to the Philippians, he emphasized maintaining an eternal perspective, which extends beyond living missionally. This also means reading about and reflecting on all that awaits us in heaven. According to Hebrews 12:2, that was also what sustained Christ through His horrific death and all the brutality He experienced preceding it. That verse tells us to fix, as in fasten unwaveringly, our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him. This tells me, the more I reflect on all the blessings I have in Christ and through Christ, today and through eternity, the greater my faith and strength to endure today’s challenges and the easier it becomes to encourage those I love to prioritize obedience to Him above all, even if that means losing all. Thankfully, I’m not alone in my pursuit. Jesus, the One who died that I might live throughout eternity with Him, will grow my faith, decrease my anxiety and fear, and help me to be a source of inspiration, not hindrance, to those I care about most. He will do the same for you–if you’ll let Him. Welcome back to the Windermere Coaching Minute! This week, we're diving into Week 2 of our AI Challenge series, focusing on the heart of real estate: relationships and communication.Golden Rule Reminder: Never input confidential client information into AI - no names, addresses, or financial details.Day 8 - Draft Communication TemplatesCreate scripts for common conversations like price improvements, expired listings, and market updates. Example: Build a framework for discussing price adjustments that's empathetic yet data-driven, turning difficult conversations into strategy sessions.Day 9 - 90-Day Relationship Nurturing PlanDesign systematic touchpoint strategies for different database segments. Integrate AI planning with your tools: Cloze CRM for automation, Cloze Ghostwriter for email sequences, Express Docs for handwritten notes, and Maxa for social media. AI designs the strategy; your tools execute it while maintaining your authentic voice.Day 10 - Navigate Challenging Client SituationsUse AI as a judgment-free thinking partner for difficult conversations. Practice boundary-setting, reframe frustrations, and develop language that maintains relationships while addressing tough issues.Day 11 - Role Play Listing PresentationsLet AI act as a skeptical seller to practice objection handling. Work through commission questions, marketing plan challenges, and experience inquiries - all available 24/7 with no judgment.Day 12 - Identify Success PatternsAnalyze your best client relationships to understand what makes them successful. Discover your sweet spot and where to focus your energy for replicable results.Day 13 - Transaction Stage TemplatesCreate text/email templates for every transaction milestone: offer accepted, inspection scheduled, appraisal ordered, clear to close. Stay consistent without starting from scratch each time.Day 14 - Reflect & IntegrateEvaluate which tools saved you time and improved client conversations. Understand how AI, your CRM, and personal touch work together to create a systematic relationship engine. As James Clear says, "We don't rise to the level of our goals, but we fall to the level of our systems." AI helps you be more thoughtful, organized, and consistent - but YOU bring the authenticity and build the trust. What AI Should Help With: Communication templates, relationship strategies, conversation practice, follow-up systems, CRM campaign designWhat AI Should NOT Replace: Genuine personal connection, professional judgment, actual client data handlingCommit to 10-15 minutes daily. Stay curious, look for opportunities, and remember: AI handles structure, your tools handle execution, so you can focus on building authentic, lasting relationships.Connect: Email fanning@windermere.com to be featured on our podcast. Sean is joined by Chris Ryan to avenge their Yautja brethren on planet Genna and cover Dan Trachtenberg's ‘Predator: Badlands,' starring Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi. Before diving in though, they briefly cover a handful of movie news headlines, including the reporting that Ryan Reynolds is remaking the 1970s crime film ‘Thunderbolt and Lightfoot' for Amazon MGM (2:35). Next, they unpack the new 'Predator' legacy sequel and make the case for why it wouldn't work without Fanning's performance, explain why Trachtenberg has a clear eye for titillating action set piece filmmaking, and discuss its big box office success and wonder what it represents at large (7:39). Then, they rank every film in the 'Predator' franchise (43:38). Host: Sean Fennessey Guest: Chris Ryan Producers: Jack Sanders and Bex Donnelly Learn more about your ad choices.
