Outlouders, enjoy this free taster of Holly Wainwright, Clare Stephens and special guest host Laura Brodnik from The Spill on our subscribers-only episode. You can listen to the full conversation: The One Big Lie Blown Up By The Kylie Doco The Netflix doco Kylie has officially dropped, and the nostalgia we are feeling is quite real. Today, Holly, Clare and Laura are unpacking the three-part series. From the ‘singing budgie’ era to two-time Grammy Award winner, it's the ultimate masterclass in career longevity. So why does our collective obsession with the ‘Princess of Pop’ run so deep, and what does Kylie’s story tell us about the grit and resilience behind the fame? What do you mean, you're not a subscriber yet? Solve that problem HERE. We discuss her first cancer diagnosis at age 36, her decision to postpone chemotherapy to try IVF and the revelation of her second, very private battle with breast cancer. Also, the slightly awkward raw honesty of Jason Donovan, her relationship with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and the lure of your first true love. Plus, the touching way her friend Nick Cave articulates her magic might just be our absolute favourite part of the entire thing. The National Disability Insurance Scheme was designed as a lifetime guarantee, ensuring eligible Australians receive the individualised support needed to live an ordinary life. In a major shift ahead of the May Budget, the government is moving to tighten spending, including a plan to remove 160,000 people from the NDIS. But for the families who rely on this funding for therapy and essential daily support, there is a growing fear that the safety net is being pulled back before public systems are ready to catch them. We're joined by ABC National Disability Affairs Reporter Nas Campanella to unpack what these changes actually look like in practice and whether the NDIS can be made sustainable without leaving our most vulnerable behind.

Francesca Rudkin: Should the Tom Phillips Netflix doco be made at all?

On Thursday afternoon, almost 300 pages of police emails, text messages and documents were released about the Tom Phillips Netflix documentary, following an Official Information Act request. What was released raises real questions about the appropriateness of the relationship and communication between police and the production company - and whether the doco should be made at all. The planned Netflix documentary sits right in the middle of the tension between public interest storytelling, and the welfare of vulnerable children. It is not just a media issue - the information that was released poses legal, ethical, and social questions. On one hand, there is a clear argument for the documentary to go ahead. The Phillips case gripped the nation: three children were missing for nearly four years before being recovered after a violent police confrontation in 2025. A documentary could provide transparency, explain police decision-making, and help the public understand how such a prolonged disappearance was able to happen. From the production company perspective a documentary is a good business opportunity. Global true-crime documentaries sell, and this story has undeniable international appeal. Producer Dame Julie Christie isn't one to sit around discussing placing levy's on streaming services, rather she believes in producing globally appealing content they will buy. So, it was no surprise to learn this doco would be broadcast on Netflix - Christie has always walked the talk. However, the OIA documents complicate things. They show that filmmakers were granted unusually high levels of access to police operations, including briefings and access to a crime scene, in what could be seen as an exchange for police oversight of the final product. This raises two concerns. First, it risks turning the documentary into what critics describe as “police PR,” rather than an independent account. The police have final sign off on the editing of the documentary, which implies they have a certain amount of control over the narrative. Second, it suggests the production company was given privileges beyond what is typical for media. The production company was given a heads up about Philip's death before his family or the media, which the Police Commissioner Richard Chambers has expressed regret for. The Commissioner also added that the documentary was not always handled in line with the usual protocols and processes that apply to documentaries police are involved in. That's not on the production company, which clearly built a good working relationship with police and were just doing their job when asking for co-operation and access. If it's granted, they're not going to turn it down. But where most New Zealanders will be wary of this documentary is when it comes to the welfare of the children. Experts and family members have already warned that a film could retraumatise them, particularly given their prolonged isolation and the ongoing process of reintegration. There are court injunctions limiting what can be reported, signalling that the legal system prioritises their protection over public disclosure. But if there was not this documentary there will only be another one - or a book, or articles. Everyone has an opinion on this story; the interest won't go away. The Police Commissioner said, “There were strict conditions in place to protect the children and sensitive police operational information,” Let's hope that's the case. It’s Oscars Day, aka Christmas for people who like celebrity gossip and frocks. Holly Wainwright, Clare Stephens and Amelia Lester have a chaotic recap for you, including whether Leo stole Pedro’s moustache, the jokes that landed and the ones that flopped, and why justice was served in the Best Actor face-off. Plus, Louis Theroux has gone Inside the Manosphere for a new Netflix documentary, and there’s a lot to unpack. Are these men dangerous, or just shoddy salesmen looking for a mark? And while we’re at it, is Louis a little outplayed in the 'everything is content' era? And, are you a 'reply only' friend? We’re looking at the friendship dynamic where one person does all the heavy lifting while the other just reacts to the blue bubbles. Is it a problem if you’re the one who replies, but never reaches out? In other business, there is a literal culture war bubbling over whether being on The Pill decides which movie star you fancy. Elon Musk thinks it’s science, but we have some actual data (and common sense) to throw at that theory. Here’s everything you need to know.Plus, the documentary Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model dropped last week and quickly became one of the most talked-about shows in the world. Now the judges and contestants featured in the doco have given follow-up interviews about what happened behind the scenes while filming this tell-all, and it’s not looking good for Tyra Banks. From the reason why she was never supposed to appear in the documentary to what her fellow judges are saying about her now, the controversy around this show is far from over. And Australia’s most famous radio duo have been in the headlines this week thanks to a very vulnerable on-air disagreement. Here’s why we are sure this is not a publicity stunt. Listen to our recent Brutally Honest Review of the Next Top Model documentary on Apple or Spotify. Episode 10 opens in the long-running genre they've accidentally perfected — two grown men versus consumer electronics — as Michael explains how he revived his ageing Samsung “smart TV” (now “a bit of a nuff-nuff”) with a cheap HDMI streaming box bought from an Australian online retailer that “rhymes with Hogan”.  The thrill here isn't just 4K; it's the moral victory of upgrading the brain while keeping the body.  The upgraded TV then becomes a portal to two YouTube documentaries that send the pair (and us) into a warmly nostalgic British lane. One is an ARTE doc on Madness — “Princes of Ska” — which prompts Michael to re-fall in love with a band he rates as not just a ska novelty act, but an elite singles machine whose later pop craftsmanship deserves more credit than the pigeonhole allows. The other find is the real rabbit hole: John Peel's Record Box — an hour built around the late BBC DJ's stash of 142 singles kept separate from his famously vast collection (more than 100,000 records). The documentary hauls the box around to fellow travellers and famous fans — Jack White, Elton John, others — letting them rummage, remember and speculate on why those particular records were kept close.  Peel, it turns out, could contain multitudes: Sheena Easton's “9 to 5”, some Status Quo, a heavy White Stripes presence… and a special extra shrine for The Fall, who were apparently too important even for the box.  Then Brian takes the wheel for the episode's marquee music moment: Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde turns 60, marked with a concert at Tulsa's legendary Cain's Ballroom, presented by the Bob Dylan Center (sitting right next to the Woody Guthrie Center, because Tulsa is quietly running a curriculum).  Brian's spoken with the Center's director, Steve Jenkins, who teases an event titled Sooner or Later with a lineup that reads like an alternate-universe festival poster:  Naturally, they can't leave the album itself alone. They circle around what makes Blonde on Blonde such a gravitational object: the New York-to-Nashville recording shift, Al Kooper and Robbie Robertson in tow, and the snap-in brilliance of Nashville players like Charlie McCoy and Joe South.  Michael calls it the culmination of Dylan's ridiculous 18-month streak from Bringing It All Back Home through Highway 61 Revisited to Blonde on Blonde — productivity that makes modern “content schedules” look like a wellness day.  Song picks follow: Michael is unwavering on “Visions of Johanna”; Brian leans toward “Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)”, while also marvelling that Dylan had “Positively 4th Street” sitting on the bench, unused, like a spare masterpiece. There are lighter detours too: a surprisingly vivid discussion of a film built around stand-up comedy as therapy (Will Arnett, Laura Dern, John Bishop's life story, Bradley Cooper popping up in a minor role because he can), and then Brian's recommendation of Mackenzie Crook's Small Prophets — a title that briefly defeats Michael because he searches the wrong spelling and finds financial advice instead.  Once located, it lands hard: whimsy, sadness, small acts, and a specific episode-four moment that gets Brian teary without him wanting to spoil why. Michael flags the return of Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, apparently digging deep into the back catalogue (with a Guardian five-star review from Toowoomba), plus the pair's Grateful Dead-adjacent moves and upcoming US tribute tour. They also talk up Robert Finley, the 71-year-old, legally blind Louisiana singer with the late-blooming career arc (carpenter most of his life, first records in his 60s, produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys), heading to Australia in May for intimate shows.  Finley's story lands like a parable for anyone who's ever thought they missed their chance. (Michael, who's finishing his own record — under the gloriously self-aware pseudonym Imposter Syndrome, album titled Oversharing with Strangers — certainly hears it that way.) Episode 10, then, is classic On The Record: a podcast held together by cable management, cultural memory, and the belief that the best stories are found when you stop pretending you have a plan. It was the show that taught us to "smize" while normalising questionable practices, it was America's Next Top Model . This week, Netflix drops "Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model," a three-part autopsy of the 24-cycle juggernaut that defined early 2000s reality TV, but what's the point of it? We explore whether this reunion of Tyra Banks and her original panel, plus former contestants, actually offers accountability, or if it’s just another "nostalgia trip" designed for a new binge. And in headlines today, Thirty-four ‌Australians released from a camp holding families of suspected Islamic State militants in northern Syria have returned to ‌the detention centre due to "technical reasons"; The Kremlin has rejected accusations from five European countries that they killed jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny with toxin from ‌a poisonous frog; US media are reporting that the investigation into the disappearance of TV show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is now leaning away from suspecting family members; Ed Sheeran told the crowd in Sydney that he no longer has a mobile phone because of the lawsuit brought against him in 2015 THE END BITS Support independent women's media Check out The Quicky Instagram here GET IN TOUCHShare your story, feedback, or dilemma! On the latest episode of On The Record, Brian Wise and Michael Mackenzie ease into their weekly cultural ramble with the sombre news of Bob Weir's death—remembering an artist whose band (The Grateful Dead) they half‑followed but wholly respected. Weir, who died on January 10 at 78 (the same date as David Bowie's passing—coincidence or cosmic scheduling?), becomes the launchpad for a surprisingly affectionate exploration of Deadhead culture. Michael recalls the excellent Long Strange Trip documentary—long enough, Brian notes, to break a Melbourne Film Festival projector—and the pair marvel at the Grateful Dead's unique talent for turning concerts into economic ecosystems.  From there, the conversation pivots to David Bowie's The Final Act documentary (streaming on ABC), Crowded House opening the Australian Open (a first for tennis, apparently), and the AFL's ongoing failure to book local acts for the Grand Final. Why Snoop Dogg over Emma Donovan? Why not Troy Cassar-Daley? The hosts are baffled. Then there's Bluesfest's controversial booking of heavy metal act Parkway Drive, which has purists clutching their harmonicas. Festival director Peter Noble defends the choice, arguing you can't limit festivals by genre.  The episode meanders through Lucinda Williams' new album, Russell Crowe's Oscar-worthy turn in Nuremberg, and the existential challenges of songwriting. They all go hand in hand.·        The two types of treatment that are available: functional (aka integrative) and traditional.·        Supplements, medications, and lifestyle changes used in treatment programs.·        Optimizing thyroid function can help to normalize lipid levels.·        Integrative endocrinologists tend to see knowledge as a continuum.  It grows as we learn how lifestyle, environment, and hormones all dance together. Send us a textWelcome back to DMRaka Charlie Sheen is the unfiltered Netflix documentary that's setting social media on fire. Told over two explosive episodes, it strips away the tabloid frenzy to reveal the real man behind the headlines. From childhood in Malibu to peak Hollywood fame and public collapse, Charlie Sheen finally opens up about the addictions, the scandals, and the self-destruction that nearly ended his career — and his life. Now seven years sober, he's reclaiming the mic to tell his story in his own words. With jaw-dropping confessions, exclusive interviews, and raw emotional moments, the doc features voices from those who lived it with him — Denise Richards, Jon Cryer, Brooke Mueller, even his former drug dealer. This isn't just another celebrity redemption arc; it's a wild, cautionary tale of excess, ego, and survival in the spotlight. Brutally honest, wildly entertaining, and impossible to ignore — aka Charlie Sheen is the doc everyone will be talking about. Doc director Arthur Jones (Feels Good Man, Antisocial Network) is a '90s indie rock guy, just like George, so they tackle these two parallel docs. Our first in-person episode in a few years (most recent was Rodney Ascher in 2021), Arthur and Giorgio Angelini were in-person in March 2020 to discuss Feels Good Man.PAVEMENTS (Alex Ross Perry, 2024) is a hybrid docufiction about the UR-slacker band from Stockton that took the indie world by storm. Perry combines standard music doc tropes with a meta-biopic, meta-musical theater show, and meta-faux-museum exhibit, to meta-success. George and Arthur go deep on living through the irony-poisoned '90s, Malkmus as Fauntleroy, Stockton as the birthplace of Universal Basic Income in America, and Don DeLillo's White Noise.KIM'S VIDEO (David Redmon, Ashley Sabin, 2023) Korean immigrant Yong-man Kim starts a chain of video stores in New York, including a lot of bootlegs and underground film and music. The times catch up as they inevitably do with media retail, and the stores all close. Who will house this one-of-a-kind collection of VHS and DVDs? How do they end up in Salemi, Sicily, and what will be their fate? Director Redmon takes an investigative approach that is surprisingly gonzo and, like the best docs, does not end up where you think it will. Both docs are currently available to stream on MUBI.Arthur Jones is best known for making documentary films but enjoys working across a variety of disciplines. He directed the award-winning documentary film Feels Good Man (2020) and co-directed The Antisocial Network, Netflix (2024). Both of these movies are deeply researched true stories that explore how the internet has made us all a little crazier. Each is visually inventive and filled with unique motion graphics. In addition to working as a director, he freelances as a graphic designer, illustrator, editor and animator. He completed design and motion work for the upcoming doc features Go Deep (Amazon Prime, HyperObject Industries) and Have You Seen Me Lately (HBO Documentary, Ringer Films) and edited Joe Mande's comedy special CHILL (Hulu).Arthur has guest lectured at colleges and universities on a variety of subjects, including the history of conspiracy theories, internet memetics, online extremism and non-fiction filmmaking. Paco and George watched the 2025 Matt Wolf two-part Paul Ruebens doc on HBO.This is prime Gen X imprinting, Paul Reubens' real life definitively laid out for the picking. The impish Reubens created his signature Pee-Wee Herman stage show as a cult Hollywood underground theater piece in 1981, but it didn't take much time for the world to catch on thanks to 1985's Pee-wee's Big Adventure, also the feature film debut of director Tim Burton. We talk about his comedy origins, the cultural impact of Pee-wee's Playhouse, and how Reubens blurred the line between persona and performer. Pee-wee Herman, the quirky, bow-tied man-child brought to life by Paul Reubens, revolutionized children's television and pop culture by refusing to fit into any traditional box. With Pee-wee's Playhouse, Reubens created a technicolor world that was as smart as it was silly—mixing slapstick, surrealism, and subversion with genuine warmth and creativity. The show wasn't just for kids; it was a layered, artful spectacle that celebrated difference, encouraged imagination, and featured a wildly diverse cast before that was common. Pee-wee became a cultural icon because he gave audiences permission to be weird, to laugh loud, and to embrace joy without irony. His influence can still be seen in everything from alt-comedy to design to how we talk about identity and play. Part review, part tribute, this episode is a celebration of a singular, subversive icon who never stopped being a kid at heart. A very private Reubens faces his own internal battles even while doing interviews with doc director Matt Wolf, right before his death in 2023. This two-part series is moving and joyous, but also heart-breaking look at the man who truly was "a loner, Dottie."George's article about the Pee-wee radio showMeeting Ric Heitzman at his gallery show closing.Paco's video for Sal & MitziSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
