In the future near-peer and peer fight, salvo competition will be the preeminent means by which one country will kinetically overwhelm the other in a fight. I discuss the way the West is in an existential hazard of being woefully under-prepared to meet the threat if Western forces go toe to toe with regional hegemons in the East or West. The US is NOT prepared for the war of leakers in which the inadequate missile defense systems and strategy now deployed will be overwhelmed if it enters a war of choice with China or Russia. It isn't simply the peer competitors but the smaller players like North Korea and Yemen are demonstrating that the US and its allies can't cash the checks they boast about. Este domingo Chile vivió una importante jornada electoral. Más de 13 millones de votantes, el 86% del censo, acudieron a las urnas. Se elegía en primera vuelta al presidente y se renovaba toda la cámara de diputados y la mitad del Senado para los próximos cuatro años. No hubo sorpresas. Las encuestas acertaron. Ningún candidato alcanzó el 50% requerido para evitarse el balotaje, que tendrá lugar el próximo 14 de diciembre. Concurrirán los dos más votados este domingo. Por un lado la oficialista Jeannette Jara, que obtuvo el 26,8% de los votos, y por otro el republicano José Antonio Kast, que obtuvo el 23,9% de los votos. El tercer puesto se lo quedó Franco Parisi, seguido de Johannes Kaiser y Evelyn Matthei. La fragmentación de la derecha impidió que un único candidato conservador superara a Jara en primera vuelta. Sumados Kast, Kaiser y Matthei habrían superado el 50%. En el Congreso también se produjo un claro giro a la derecha. Aunque la coalición de izquierdas unidad por Chile fue la más votada, las tres alianzas en la derecha lograron juntas 76 diputados, quedándose así a un paso de la mayoría absoluta. Es la primera vez en muchos años que los partidos de derecha está tan cerca de controlar ambas cámaras. El resultado dice mucho sobre el descontento con el gobierno de Gabriel Boric, cuya tasa de aprobación ronda el 25%. Como consecuencia directa del estallido social de 2019, Boric llegó al poder dos años más tarde con una agenda de reformas muy ambiciosa que habría de acompañar el proceso ya en marcha que traería una nueva constitución más afín sus intereses. Pero ese proceso constituyente fracasó. Hace dos años los chilenos rechazaron la nueva constitución en plebiscito. Entretanto la inflación se disparó, el crecimiento económico se estancó y la delincuencia se incrementó de forma notable. La vuelta al voto obligatorio, una de las pocas reformas que han prosperado durante el mandato de Boric, ha movilizado a millones de abstencionistas, pero en vez de beneficiar a la izquierda, parece haber premiado a los partidos de derecha y a los populistas como el de Parisi. Chile cierra de esta manera un ciclo de seis años muy convulsos, que comenzó con el estallido social y la voluntad por parte de la izquierda de reinventarse desde cero la democracia chilena. Fue esa misma izquierda la que apostó por fragmentar la sociedad confiándose a una nueva constitución que nunca vio la luz. El resultado lo tenemos a la vista. La derecha chilena ha crecido y se ha diversificado dando cabida a corrientes antes inexploradas y que, naturalmente, no comparecían en las cámaras. El próximo 14 de diciembre se enfrentarán dos ideas de Chile irreconciliables. Jara representa el continuismo del gobierno de Boric, mientras que Kast significa el regreso al orden y el rechazo frontal a todo lo que esa izquierda representa. Las encuestas dan ventaja a este último, lo cual es perfectamente lógico ya que resulta difícil imaginar a los votantes de Kaiser o Matthei entregando su voto a una candidata comunista. Salvo sorpresa mayúscula lo más probable es que José Antonio Kast sea el próximo presidente de Chile. Su meta: asegurar el Bündnis interno y abrir un canal con Lutero.  En doctrina, fijó un comienzo sorprendente: Sola Scriptura y reglas de interpretación bíblica (la Escritura se interpreta a sí misma), delineó Iglesia, ministerio y disciplina (Kirchenbann) y proclamó al magistrado como custos utriusque tabulae (cuidado de religión y justicia).  En los sacramentos apostó por una fórmula irénica: cœna mystica—“se exhibe la verdadera comunión del cuerpo y sangre de Cristo”—que permitió conversar sin ceder la comprensión espiritual reformada.  El episodio narra su génesis en el sínodo de Basilea, su uso junto con la Declaratio de Zúrich y por qué, aunque triunfó como pacto suizo, fracasó como concordia con Wittenberg. Imagine growing up in a small town in Sicily, dreaming of coming to America to open a restaurant, and surpassing all of your dreams? Chef Salvo Lo Castro did just that, where he began his culinary career at a young age in Sicily and now feeds the world from his NYC Soho restaurant, Casasalvo, considered a truly divine experience for the senses. Perhaps it's because Chef Salvo was formerly the lead chef at the Vatican for Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, and now, we can eat like kings, royalty, and the spiritual leaders, too, at his magnificent new eatery. I'm honored to welcome Chef Salvo to our show, sharing not only his experiences in the kitchen, but behind the scenes, too. He's cooked for the likes of Vadimir Putin, the Saudi Royal family, Muammar Gaddafi, Tom Cruise, Robert DeNiro and dozens of other world leaders, presidents, and celebrities. In fact, he's quoted as saying that after a meal, some high-profile guests will surprise him in the kitchen and thank him for a meal well served. Imagine! We'll talk about Chef Salvo's start in the culinary world, and how he ended up cooking at the Vatican after working around the world at top hotels and five-star Michelin restaurants. He says he does not get star-struck, because to him, every guest is treated like family. And no doubt, that's been part of his incredible success, along with his hand-crafted pastas and sauces. Chef Salvo says his ingredients are all fresh or from specialty farms with tradition in mind. He says he combines tradition with taste, and creativity with authenticity. Among his favorite dishes? His mother's meatballs, a recipe he cooks up to this day. For Chef Salvo, owning a restaurant in N.Y. is a dream come true. He first opened three espresso bars in the City which he still checks on each morning before riding down to his restaurant in Soho on his Vespa. He spends 18-hours a day there, which he calls home and his patrons invited guests. No doubt part of his success. We like chatting to Ethan, he's got some great perspectives and he thinks deeply about his climbing. The base of the chat was around two recent segments in Ethan's climbing, one trip to Bishop where Ethan didn't really climb anything and a few weeks back in Squamish where Ethan climbed some incredibly hard things. It was interesting to hear how the former experience seems to have left a more lasting and positive impact on Ethan despite the lack of hard sends.
