Este jueves se publica en Francia la historieta de Mathieu Diez y Jibé titulada Todo salvo Beirut. Un recorrido por los pasillos de la diplomacia francesa en el Líbano, un país donde la sed de cultura trasciende las guerras y las crisis económicas.  Mathieu Diez no imaginaba que su nuevo empleo iba a cambiarle la vida. En 2020, este francés amante de la historieta aceptó el puesto de agregado literario en una de las embajadas francesas más importantes del mundo, la de Líbano. Todo salvo Beirut es la historia de esa experiencia. “Hice la lista de los países a los que podía postular. Mi madre me dijo: todo, pero no Beirut”, cuenta a RFI. Cuando llegó al país de Oriente Próximo, descubrió que la vida en el Líbano era como “páginas de cómic dibujándose ante mis ojos”. El Líbano es un país árabe, en parte francófono por haber estado bajo administración francesa durante dos décadas. Mathieu Diez detalla los bastidores de la diplomacia cultural. “La cultura es algo que se maneja en las embajadas como el ‘softpower'. Para los Estados es una manera de ser reconocidos, diferente a la diplomacia militar, económica”, explica. En el Líbano, la cultura hace parte de la tradición, “pero el francés es un idioma que se está perdiendo, es una lucha mantenerlo vivo”. Su llegada a Beirut ocurrió un año después de la explosión del puerto, y tras numerosas crisis tanto financieras como políticas. “Había el proyecto de hacer un festival de cómic, pero con el estado del país en ese momento me parecía muy ridículo hacerlo, cuando hay gente que pierde su dinero en el banco, con la crisis. Fueron los propios libaneses que me dijeron que necesitaban reencontrarse con la cultura que habían perdido”. En cuatro años en Beirut, Diez y su familia experimentaron la realidad de los cortes de luz, de la crisis económica y de la guerra con Israel, que se reactivó tras el 7 de octubre de 2023. Una vez más, la cultura fue a la vez víctima y salvación. “Fue difícil hacer eventos. No recuerdo cuántas veces tuvimos que cancelar por los bombardeos o por razones políticas”, recuerda. El Festival del Libro comenzó en 2022, luego llegó a una segunda edición en 2023, y en 2024 se canceló debido a la guerra entre Israel y Hezbolá. La historieta cuenta esa época, que resuena con eco amargo ahora que el conflicto ha vuelto a golpear el país. “Pero me di cuenta que, a pesar de todo la gente sigue viviendo. Desde 1975 y la guerra civil, los libaneses se acostumbran a vivir al lado del caos. Un amigo libanés me dijo que las fiestas más bellas que hizo fueron durante la guerra civil. Cuanto más difícil es la vida más necesitas sentirte vivo, y eso es algo muy libanés”, concluye.   Todo salvo Beirut es una historieta del guionista Mathieu Diez dibujada por Jibé y publicada en francés este jueves 5 de marzo.

Curioso y francamente entretenido es también el ensayo “Reinas Infieles, doce mujeres que se rebelaron contra un destino implacable”, que firma la periodista e historiadora Carmen Gallardo. Durante muchos siglos, el matrimonio o el convento fueron las únicas opciones para las reinas, mientras, en las cortes, los reyes compartían su vida privada con otras mujeres con las que les unían lazos de afecto y con las que engendraban hijos ilegítimos. Salvo algunas excepciones que optaron por tener amantes de forma pública. Son reinas infieles y la historia de doce de ellas, a lo largo de nueve siglos, la recupera ahora la periodista y escritora Carmen Gallardo.
