If implemented right, the establishment of a land registry, digitisation of records and unique land parcel identification numbers could reduce the number of land disputes, ease land transactions, facilitate flow of agricultural credit and provide a significant boost to the GDP. However, there are several challenges in the form of poor capacity at the local level, lack of standards for mapping and conflicting regulations at the state and Central levels. A special interview with one of the great minds of the Energy Transition. Dr. Doug Arent is the Executive Director of Strategic Public– Private Partnerships at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado, U.S and Distinguished Fellow, World Economic Forum. He just published a book called “Our Renewable Energy Future: The Story of How Renewables will become the Basis for Our Lives.” “Our Renewable Energy Future” focuses on clean energy technology evolution and where our energy system is going. While its foundation is technology innovation, the book brings a unique perspective that technology alone is not what has brought about the explosive growth of renewable energy. Laurent and Gerard have a stratospheric conversation with Dr Arent about the options in front of us. Digitisation and intelligent networks are going to revolutionize the way we produce and consumer energy. About NREL: Originally called the Solar Energy Research Institute, NREL began operating in July 1977 and was designated a national laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in September 1991. It runs a budget of 1bnUSD/y making it one of the world's (if not the) most impressive R&D institutions when it comes to Renewable Energy. Telefónica Tech, a leader in digital transformation and part of the Telefónica Group, has been announced as the successful vendor for the tender to provide numerous infrastructure technology solutions to Children's Health Ireland (CHI) for the new digital children's hospital. When the new children's hospital opens in 2025, digital technology will be involved in everything from electronic health records to the systems controlling the building. Digitisation fosters information exchange and helps doctors optimise their decisions and provide the best care for patients. In this five year deal with Children's Health Ireland, Telefónica Tech UK&I will build and manage the hospital's IT infrastructure, with a significant focus on cyber security. Telefónica Tech will oversee all servers, storage, security, PCs, printers, workstations on wheels and laptops in the new hospital. The platform will also support the clinical applications that will integrate to the hospital's new Electronic Patient Record system (powered by EPIC). Adrian Rath, Chief Technology Officer with Children's Health Ireland, explains the benefits this partnership will bring to staff working in the new hospital: "We are delighted to work with Telefónica Tech for the next five years, to create world-class digital infrastructure in a world-class digital hospital. In Children's Health Ireland, we deliver around 200,000 episodes of care to patients in a year. The new hospital will be an incredible place for clinicians to provide that care to patients. "There will be a single sign-on system to greatly improve access to information for clinicians, while a single email system for all staff will make for seamless cross-city collaboration between the new hospital and CHI Urgent Care sites at Connolly and Tallaght. The security solutions provided by Telefónica Tech will enable Children's Health Ireland to strengthen its cyber security posture against potential cyber. Most importantly, all of this will bring about a safer and better experience for the children, young people and families who use our services". Ellen Dickson, VP of Enterprise Health at Telefónica Tech UK&I, said: "The New Children's Hospital is set to transform children's healthcare in Ireland as a centre of excellence. The IT infrastructure and services will underpin the vital clinical services and are therefore critical to the success of the hospital. Telefónica Tech UK&I's Strategic Healthcare Practice has market-leading expertise, thanks to the skills and experience of our staff, and has successfully delivered innovative and complex health IT projects with some of the largest health trusts in the UK." Telefónica Tech UK&I is developing the infrastructure technology for the new children's hospital while the building is under construction, due for completion by the end of October 2024. Sabine VdL talks to Pravina Ladva, Group Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Swiss Re. Pravina's career reads like a playbook for digital transformation and has answers that could redefine the way we look at insurance economics. This conversation is not just timely, it's urgently needed in a world where data is the new oil and AI is the new electricity. Pravina tells us about why Swiss Re is taking the lead with its groundbreaking Sigma Research Report from the Swiss Re Institute, what are we – as an industry – standing to gain or lose, uncovering the blueprints for the future of insurance, digital risk, and how technology could either be the ladder or the snake in this high-stakes game of digital transformation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Today you can't turn a corner without talking about AI, tech and data. This means there's a huge amount of opportunity that's been untapped. There are a whole load of new business models that we haven't even dreamed of yet. Digitisation is taking the analogue world and putting it into a digital system so that it can be transmitted around the world both in terms of data and conversation in a digital context as opposed to a paper context. Digitalisation is how you take that information and apply it to your business processes. Many organisations deal with some kind of legacy technology, you need to be aware of you digital environment and work within that as well as what are the opportunities to change it and where some of it is OK, because not all legacy is bad. BEST MOMENTS ‘If you type digitisation and digitalisation the come up together on autocorrect, it shows we really have a mixed view on what they both are and mean.'‘Every one of my peers that I speak to are all facing the same challenge: There is a war for talent because we all want the same kind of people to come and do similar kinds of things.'‘No organisation on its own can achieve what it wants to achieve, you need to be very open minded about who you're partnering with, whether that's InsurTechs, large global service providers, whoever it is in the end-to-end ecosystem to really bring the value in the right way.'‘It's not about your core technology, it's about what you do with it and how you operate it that makes a difference.' Live from Brussels, on the 20th of June 2023, we were invited to interview Leonard Birnbaum. Since he came last on the show (Ep50), the whole Energy Sector has been through hell with Russia invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent new-death experience of 2022. Leonard Birnbaum is the CEO of the giant German Utility E.ON and also president of Eurelectric, the sector association which represents the common interests of the electricity industry at pan-European level. We have a very lively debate about how E.ON survived the energy crisis. What changes he had to be undertaken, how luck played its part, but also the “need for speed”. Other key lessons were the end of tolerance for weaknesses, the acceleration of digitisation and total engagement with their customers. We then moved the conversation to the proposed reform of the Energy Market that regulators are keen to put in place. Is it too little too late or, on the opposite, a solution in search of a problem. In its manifesto, Eurelectric wants to focus in the coming years on three priorities:Security of supplyStronger & more digitalised infrastructureFairness of the distribution of risks & benefits between the stakeholdersLeo advocates for flexibility mechanisms rather than capacity mechanisms and support full traceability via 24/7 green certificates. Finally, when you had the electrification of transport, the key word is Flexibility, as the electrification can either be fast or global, but cannot be both at the same time. Compromises will have to be made.A great thanks to Kristian Ruby, Bruce Douglas and Emily O'Leary for making this moment possible.---This podcast is powered by Axpo an international leader in providing sustainable energy solutions for the future. In the Nordics, Axpo has been a pioneer within Trading and Origination services for the last 20 years.

More than 8 million unregistered SIM cards have been blocked in Ghana. The Ministry of Communications and Digitisation set a final deadline for mobile phone users to link their SIM card to their identification cards and now those who haven't been able to register can't use their SIMS. Opposition parties and civil liberties groups are protesting as the SIM needs to be registered with the biometric Ghana Card. The scheme has been full of delays, but it looks as though the government is standing firm this time. BBC Reporter in Accra Thomas Naadi is on the show. Heart attack on a chip Researchers at the University of Southern California have developed a “heart attack on a chip” to ultimately test new drugs and even personalise medicines. Professor Megan McCain and Dr. Megan Rexius-Hall speak to Gareth about how the chip can monitor oxygen imbalances that happen in the heart during an attack. The heart muscle doesn't regenerate as well as other tissue in the body, meaning patients are often tired and don't recover to the previous levels of fitness. The chip will allow researchers to watch a ‘heart attack' as it happens – which isn't possible in animals – and see how damage is being done. They hope to be able to monitor and see how the cells on the chip respond to different concentrations of oxygen as this too can't be studied in animals or humans. The end of hard copy games?
