The Problem is…:We realize that in today’s busy world:We have so much competition for our attention now days: 50-100 emails a day, texts, lots of phone calls, kids, spouses you know the scenario. In this crazy world, how can we get the attention of others with all this competition for our time?Give people what they want and value, early in the interaction. If you figure out what matters most to your audience, they’ll reward you by giving you their attention. What would be different if you could get people’s attention immediately and keep it.• Get people to act• Get people to accept your ideas• Win people to your point of view. What are the reasons people loose attention:• Took too long to get to the point • Chose the wrong method • Didn’t focus on the audience or person, they don’t feel understood.• Failed to discover the true problem• Didn’t discover what others wanted or valued • Lost your train of thought and came across badly • Soft pedaled a subject or demoralized someone • Weren’t very specific • Used too wide of an approachGive people what they want and value, early in the interaction. If you figure out what matters most to your audience, they’ll reward you by giving you their attention. When you don’t get attention right off the bat they are gone, thinking about their family, or project nothing about what you are saying. Their mind is turned off. Discussion:How do we discover what people want and value?Ask them! Hear the other person out totally. Ask for clarification “tell me more” “let me see if I have this straight”Concentrate on people’s feelings and emotions and make the appeal on that level to get people’s attention.Listen for what comes up again and again. People will repeat what they really want.Give people what they want and value, early in the interaction. If you figure out what matters most to your audience, they’ll reward you by giving you their attention. And remember the plan to do that the above 3 steps.
People remember only 20% of what they hear, 30% of what they see and hear, but a whopping 90% of what they say.The bottom line is They trust what they say more than what you say.The ultimate in persuasion is having the person whom you are talking with convince themselves. The most effective persuaders ask as many questions as they answer. Asking questions, in the right way, at the right time, may well prove to be the most effective tool you have when it comes to moving someone closer to understanding your position. Ideas for discussionEver find yourself in a situation where you were trying to influence someone and it wasn’t working? You have probably heard the saying that “My mind is made up – don’t confuse me with facts!”In situations like that, there is no way you can change someone’s mind when it is already made up. No amount of facts, data, or proof will get you there. You can’t talk your way into changing someone’s mindOr is there? How can you change someone’s mind when it is already made up?You need to help them they discover the answer to a problem and think that they thought of it.I have an example of an interview strategy I’ve used very successfully. Two ideas for discussion1. Someone has come to you with a problem and you want them to come up with the solution. Influence and outcome.2. You want to persuade someone to take an action
Your Secret SuperPowerEver wish you had a SuperPower? Ever Struggle to get your point across? Your point isn’t the problem.Want to be able to influence others? If you can set your ego aside your SuperPower could be ListeningHere is why ...People will pay closer attention when you connect with them. Listening is the first step. Listening not just hearing. We will share thoughts on listening issues in three areas:1. Ever notice that many people spend more brain calories thinking about what they are going to say next, instead of truly listening to someone? This is counter-productive for people who want to appear smart. Thinking that interrupting and controlling the conversation makes them look smart. It doesn’t. Ever listen to two people argue and you could swear they were saying the same thing? They aren’t listening to each other.2. What are the biggest barriers to listening? Distractions (such as phone calls, text messages, emails, televisions, etc.)Also the attention span of the average adult is 8 seconds before their mind starts to wander. As an active listener we can expand that bur it takes brain calories and effort. When someone needs to talk to you, are you able to stay in their moment? Can you stay in their moment and truly listen?Staying in Their Moment, Being Fully Present means being fully focusing on the needs of the people you’re communicating with. It means first managing your ego and your own attention in order to win other people’s interest.3. Today it seems a lot of people have a closed mind. Reminds me of the saying “Don’t confuse me with facts my mind is made up? How can we as listeners over come that?Deep listening requires perspective-taking. The ability to expand your openness to others perspectives in order to truly understand and empathize with their thoughts and feelings. We can see a lot of polarization in our society today, with groups of people establishing their own narratives, and if you don’t believe what they believe you are a villain. We all have our own biases and world views. To have the Listening Superpower, you need to suspend your normal skepticism and beliefs and dig into where the other person is coming from.Perspective thinking means suspending your own frame of reference so you can see someone else’s perspective. After you have carefully listened and you hear a repetition of their thoughts, stop them and rehearse what you thing they are saying such as: “Let me see if I have this straight …. Be sure they agree that you understand. Then ask, “do you have an open mind?”If they say yes then share a little of your perspective and why you see it that way. Check for understanding before moving on.Asking questions such as is a powerful way to connect with someone to open the channels of communication.
