I regularly say to groups I speak to that your education gets you the interview, and your ability to tell your story gets you the job. In the time after you get the job, if it's a leadership role, you will be evaluated by your ability to engage with and influence your team. In the time after you get the job, if it's a leadership role, you will be evaluated by your ability to engage with and influence your team. Speak UP: We confer values and abilities on people who have good communication skills. For example, might I suggest American presidents Presidents who long after they finished their term of office are still often quoted. ~ John F. Kennedy - Inaugural Address ~ "And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man". ~ Ronald Reagan ~ "Are you better off today than you were four years ago" A great election slogan - creatively swiped by another American President recently. ~ Barack Obama ~ "Cynicism is a choice. Hope is a better choice." My Favourite Speakers: In Ireland, I have my personal heroes, people capable of engaging and holding an audience in their palm. BIG Jim Larkin. (As depicted in Strumpet City written by James Plunkett, the first novel about Ireland I read, and still one of my favourites. John B Keane Tony O'Reilly Brendan Gleeson Mary O'Rourke The recent presidents of Ireland: ~ Mary Robinson ~ "Feel empowered. And if you start to do it, if you start to feel your voice heard, you will never go back". ~ Mary McAleese ~ "Change starts with us; we must be the change we want to see in the world". ~ Michael D. Higgins ~ "Now it is time to turn to an older wisdom that, while respecting material comfort and security as a basic right of all, also recognises that many of the most valuable things in life cannot be measured". The days of the great orators who could rouse a large gathering of people onto the public streets and into action are gone. Without a doubt, the presentation style and situations have changed, but the need for good communication is now an even greater requirement. The noise and distractions are greater than ever before, and you can be the person who steps up and demonstrates your ability to speak and represent your values. Step up to the mark: In your personal life, you will be called upon to speak at important business and personal events weddings, funerals, retirement parties etc. Situations that are critical to get right not only for yourself but for the people you are speaking to. You can refuse to be the person who accepts such challenges and probably become the hurler on the ditch at the event. Or, you can step forward, show leadership and be the person people want to hear. If you are the person who wishes to take Obamas advice and resist cynicism while providing hope, find a coach who can help you find your voice and tell your story. The sole focus of our discussion is centered on the intricacies of vocal articulation and the critical role of the tongue in the production of sound. We delve into the mechanics of speech, highlighting the necessity for proper utilization of all four articulators—namely the tongue, jaw, lips, and cheeks—to achieve a more resonant and controlled vocal performance. Throughout the discourse, I emphasize that many individuals possess the innate ability to sing; however, excessive tension, particularly within the tongue, can significantly impede vocal flexibility and expression. We explore the psychological factors that contribute to vocal habits, recognizing that a shift in technique can yield immediate improvements in vocal quality. Ultimately, our objective is to empower artists to harness their voices effectively, fostering a sustainable approach to vocal health and performance.Takeaways: Articulation is crucial for effective communication, and understanding the four articulators can significantly enhance one's speech. Muscular dysphonia, characterized by excessive tongue tension, can obstruct vocal performance and should be addressed for optimal vocal health. The coordination of vocal cords is essential, and tension in the face and tongue can hinder pitch variation, making relaxation imperative. Immediate results in vocal training are achievable, reflecting a strong coaching philosophy focused on facilitating artists' goals. Being a guest on other podcasts is a powerful way to grow your audience. However to achieve success, you need to refine your speaking skills. SPEAKING SKILLS WITH A STRATEGY Just being on other podcasts isn't enough. You need a strategy. Being a guest on other podcasts benefits you in two ways. First, it puts you in front of people who do not know you. You're finding new listeners. Second, you benefit with search engine currency. As you appear on more shows, you appear on more platforms and websites. The more you show up online, the more search engines will find you. This second reason is how you can benefit even if the podcast doesn't have a huge audience. Sure, you want to be in front of as many people as possible. But don't forget about the SEO benefit. YOUR ONE CHANCE STRATEGY Remember that as you are in front of new audiences, you only get one chance to make a first impression. Make it good. To connect with others and bring them into your world, improve your speaking skills. Your speaking skills strategy includes your confidence, your content, and your context. Start by believing in what you know and what you have to offer. Lean into your superpower. Next, shape your speaking skills by crafting your content that relates to the audience of that specific show. Finally, add context. Wrap your content in stories so the audience gets to know who you are, what you value, and what you believe. Great speaking skills are something you can learn and master. The fear of public speaking comes from not being prepared and confident in your content. Nobody knows your story better than you do. Embrace it. Great speaking skills are about sharing one thing in many ways through your story. SANTOU CARTER In this episode, I bring you an engaging conversation with Santou Carter. Rev. What is the best way to influence and get buy-in when you're speaking to others, be it a big audience or small, conference room or boardroom, peer meetings or executive meetings? We all want to come across in a way that moves our listeners to action, show up with confidence, and get what we want. Use these tips to persuade in the best way possible.Be Clear: Get to the point, use the BLUF principle: Bottom Line Up Front, and don't ramble on and get off on tangents.Be Compelling: Speak with authority, use vocal variety, tell stories, use examples and data points to grab your audience's attention.Be Credible: Avoid using filler words like “um” and “ah.” and pause to show control and calm. Avoid “upspeak,” which is when you speak with a question mark rather than a period. Make sure to use punctuation - exactly like you do in the written word.Listen for examples and more stories to demonstrate these principles. Some resources for you:My book “Trust Your Own Voice”: https://karenlaos.com/book/Episodes also available on YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEwQoTGdJX5eME0ccBKiKng/videos Karen Laos, Communication Expert and Confidence Cultivator, leverages 25 years in the boardroom and speaking on the world's most coveted stages such as Google and NASA to transform missed opportunities into wins. A recent report from the education review office (ERO) and the New Zealand Medical Journal (NZMJ) has found that early childhood teachers are seeing more children than ever with poor language skills. This, in part due to Covid-19 and increasingly prevalent screen and device usage. Low language and speaking skills can have further implications down the line as children become older, this is quite jarring as New Zealand is a first world country with high access to healthcare and childcare. Sasha spoke to professional research fellow in the department of General Practice and Primary Care, Samantha Marsh, about the implications of early childhood screen use and impacts of Covid-19 on children.
A speech therapist said research which found too many children are starting school unable to speak coherently highlights how difficult it is for parents to access support. Research released from the Education Review Office shows teachers are seeing more new entrants starting school who are only able to speak in sentences of about four or five words. Teachers say Covid-19 and excessive screen time are to blame, but speech therapists say a lack of help is the real problem, Melanie Earley reports.

American English shadowing exercises are for people interested in expanding their American English accents, whether you are located in the US, North America, or other areas around the world. For the best use of shadowing exercises in American English, listen to a section of audio, pause, and repeat what you hear. Try to use the same pronunciation, intonation, stress, pitch patterns, and linking that you find native English speakers use; record yourself and compare the differences.Find a video version of our exercise here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHhbIOebOsg Support the Show.
