One of my first conversations with Gabriela was about her work as a medical interpreter. I shared a situation that I'd experienced on holiday many years ago when someone in our group didn't have access to an interpreter in hospital. Until this time, I'd never thought about it – but it can be a scary situation if you know that you need medical assistance, but you aren't entirely sure what's going on – whether that's because you're living in a country where a different language is used or because you're travelling or on holiday. From there, we got on to why it's important for Gabriela to provide language access to people in situations involving important conversations relating to them – whether that's a medical appointment or a legal hearing. That's when I decided she'd be an interesting guest on the podcast – both to explain her journey for people interested in this kind of work, and to remind us all of the importance of having full access to the facts so that someone can participate fully in conversations about them. This text, originally from her bio sums it up: “For Gabriela, language access is personal — the idea that something as fundamental as being understood should never be a privilege. She knows first-hand the weight that falls on people when there is no interpreter in the room: miscommunication, fear, and the quiet indignity of not being heard.”Gabriela describes her journey, talks about some of the changes in the telephone interpreting space over the last years, shares some of the best parts and the challenges, and gives tips for those who are thinking about entering this field.Gabriela Paez is a Senior SpanishEnglish Interpreter with 10 years of experience in medical, legal, and public service settings. Based in Mexico, she specializes in professional consecutive and remote interpretation (OPI/VRI), interpreting more than 50,000 minutes annually.Find out more on the show notes page: https://englishwithkirsty.com/podcast/episode316/

 | If we're talking about your private social media, you can do whatever you want! But when you're the face of your business, there's more strategy involved and you have to make decisions based on your audience. In this episode, I'm looking at 3 topics: 1.  When does it make sense to post content in an additional language?2.  7 reasons why we sometimes get in our way with this – and what we can do instead3.  3 reasons why speaking to potential clients in your additional language(s) can help with visibility and credibility. The point of this episode is to be practical. To examine what is working/what could work for us in the future, some of the reasons why there's a gap between what we want to do and what we actually do, and an encouragement to move forward if this is a direction in which you want to go.  It's not something that I find easy, so I also explain my plans and give myself some accountabaility by talking about them on the podcast.  And of course, if you are looking for support with being more visible in English, let me know using the contact form on the show notes page and we can arrange a time to discuss it. I have a number of group and individual programmes in which I accompany people on this visibility journey. The first thing that struck me about Silke was her content. I knew she was fairly new to the freelancing world, but she was getting comments and starting conversations on her posts in a way that felt real and natural. I remember commenting on one of her posts, which led to a few more comments and we also started chatting privately.I hear so many comments about people not knowing what to post, people second-guessing themselves and in the end not sharing things, or outsourcing it all to AI and hoping for the best… I wanted to have this conversation with someone who was creating content that connects people and starts meaningful conversations.I also wanted to find out why Silke chose to focus on women's health and mental health content and to explore what happens when people don't have access to information that's relevant to them in a language that they understand. We talked about: Silke's story with languages and why she decided to focus on translating content on women's health topics How it was for Silke starting out as a freelancer in the language industry and why she set up a peer group for others in the same position How having a mentor helped Silke to gain clarity and make progress – check out Valentina Alia's episode from last week Why it's important to have business-related conversations in our additional languages Where Silke gets her inspiration for LinkedIn content and what's important to her when she writes her posts Silke's advice to others who are new in the language industry. Who is Silke? My name is Silke Kogler. I love learning foreign languages and talking about physical and mental wellbeing. That's why I recently decided to combine my two passions and become a German translator specializing in women's health and mental health. By helping international wellness brands with thoughtful and authentic translations into German, I want to empower women, especially, to educate themselves on how to live a happier and healthier life. Outside of work, I love reading all kinds of books, practicing yoga, and having deep conversations. I'm also currently taking a course on holistic women's health to deepen my knowledge and offer even better services to my clients.Find out more and access the episode links here on the show notes page: https://www.englishwithkirsty.com/podcast/episode314

Feeling ready and being ready aren't the same! One of them can be influenced by a whole host of unrelated factors and the other one is based on facts. One depends on your mood, how much you want to listen to imposter syndrome today, or whether your old friends procrastination or perfectionism are knocking on your door. The other one is far more something that you can control.Taking the next step in any journey can be a bit scary because we're venturing into the unknown. But my question for you today is … is there something that you've been putting off doing, either in your business or personal life, because you don't yet “feel ready”? [25:38] Imagine preparing for a presentation so intensely that you create life-size cutouts of your audience just to practice answering their toughest questions. That's exactly what one entrepreneur and longtime Toastmaster did before pitching his business TV's Shark Tank. In this episode host Greg Gazin speaks with Ari Siegel, founder of History By Mail, about how Toastmasters helped him prepare for one of the most high-pressure speaking moments imaginable—presenting his idea on national television in front of five investors and millions of viewers.Ari explains that months of preparation allowed him to walk into the studio feeling excited rather than nervous. Ari studied past episodes, anticipated the kinds of questions investors might ask, and practiced his responses repeatedly. By the time he stepped into the tank, the pitch felt less like a risky moment and more like a well-rehearsed presentation. One of Ari's most interesting insights is how closely the format of the show resembles a Toastmasters meeting. Ari also shares how storytelling plays a central role in his business. His company, History By Mail, sends subscribers replicas of historical documents along with guides that explain the stories behind them. That same ability to bring history to life helped him communicate his idea clearly to the investors—and even led to an unexpected interaction with legendary magician David Copperfield.Ari shares more about this experience in the Toastmasters Magazine article “Taking My Speaking Skills to TV: How Toastmasters Prepared Me for Shark Tank,” published in the March 2026 issue.Listeners will hear…• Why Ari says Shark Tank is surprisingly similar to a Toastmasters meeting—• The unusual preparation method Ari used before appearing on the show: • How Table Topics experience helped him respond to rapid-fire questions from multiple investors• Why body language, posture, and eye contact play an important role in building credibility with an audience• How storytelling helped Ari clearly explain the idea behind History By Mail• What happened after the episode aired and the powerful “Shark Tank effect” that followed• How Ari's passion for historical storytelling eventually led to an unexpected interaction with magician David CopperfieldAbout Ari SiegelAri Siegel is the founder of History By Mail, a subscription service that delivers replicas of historical documents along with the stories behind them. To connect with others, you have to get out of your own head.Whether presenting to millions on live television or talking to just one person, Dan Harris knows that the quality of every interaction depends on the presence you bring to it.Harris is a former national news anchor for ABC News and is now the host of the 10% Happier podcast and author of 10% Happier and Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics. As he knows from experience, there's power in “Waking up to something fundamental, that the mind is out of control, and you don't want to be owned by it.” How do we break the pattern of being controlled by our thoughts? Mindfulness and self-awareness, he says, put “distance” between us and our “thoughts and urges and emotions,” enabling us to connect with ourselves and others with greater consciousness and clarity. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Harris and host Matt Abrahams discuss how mindfulness can transform our communication, sharing strategies for deeper listening, responding versus reacting, and reflecting what others say back to them. “Relationships are the most important aspect of your happiness,” Harris says. The quality of those connections goes up when “you're “less stuck in your own head.”Episode Reference Links:Dan HarrisDan's Books: 10% Happier / Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics Ep.179 Finding Positive in Negative Emotions: Communication, Happiness & Wellbeing Ep.180 Unlocking Your Future Self: Communication, Happiness & Wellbeing Ep.181 Why Happiness is a Direction, Not a Destination: Communication, Happiness & Wellbeing Ep.182 Stop Chasing Time and Start Owning It: Communication, Happiness & Wellbeing  Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (01:51) - On-Air Panic Attack (02:59) - Managing Communication Anxiety (04:01) - Nervousness Before Live Audiences (05:48) - Meditation Misconceptions (09:36) - Responding vs. Reacting (12:07) - Mindfulness & Productivity (15:11) - Lessons from Interviewing (17:19) - The Final Three Question (25:14) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost.Strawberry.me. In this episode, we welcome Neil Thompson, founder of Teach the Geek, to discuss the critical need for developing speaker training programs for technical staff within an organization. Neil shares his personal story of struggling with public speaking as an engineer and how it inspired him to help other technical professionals improve their communication skills. He breaks down the common challenges technical experts face when presenting to non-technical audiences and offers practical strategies HR departments can implement to foster better communication across the organization.  [0:00] Introduction Welcome, Neil! Today's Topic: Developing Speaker Training Programs for Technical Staff [6:59] Why is it so important for technical staff to be strong public speakers? How a lack of communication skills can lead to being overlooked for promotions and raises.  The benefit of having the person with the expertise communicate it directly, rather than risk information getting lost in translation.  [13:33] What are the biggest challenges for technical people presenting to non-technical audiences? The importance of remembering what it was like before becoming a technical expert and tailoring the presentation accordingly.  The challenge of making assumptions about what the audience already knows.  Strategies for understanding the audience before delivering a presentation.  [20:32] What role can HR play in developing presentation and communication skills for technical staff? Involving technical staff in the creation of the training or presentation to ensure it meets their needs.  Using feedback questionnaires to measure the effectiveness and improvement of the training over time.  [28:52] Closing Thanks for listening! Quick Quote “A lot of times, technical people, we think that us being excellent at our jobs is good enough, and unfortunately, that's not the case. If you're not good at advocating for yourself, you're not good at communicating your worth to an organization, you get overlooked.”

Welcome to this summer flashback episode of BaseCamp Live! In today's conversation, host Davies Owens revisits a powerful interview with Andrew Pudewa, founder and director of the Institute for Excellence in Writing. In an age of shrinking vocabularies, short attention spans, and over-reliance on screens, Andrew shares why writing and speaking well are more critical than ever. He explains that students cannot think complex thoughts without the words to express them, and highlights how classical education – with its focus on grammar, logic, and rhetoric – equips students to become articulate, thoughtful communicators who can engage the world with truth and clarity.Andrew unpacks the decline he's witnessed over three decades in students' vocabulary and attention spans, and why reading aloud, memorizing beautiful language, and teaching students to write and speak persuasively are not just academic exercises but essential skills for life and faithfulness. He challenges parents and educators to see education not merely as preparation for wealth and comfort, but as formation for mission in the world. With practical encouragement, humorous reflections, and deep conviction, Andrew calls us back to raising students who can read, think, write, and speak well for God's glory and the good of others.
