When we truly listen, every conversation changes — including the one with ourselves.Listening isn't about waiting for your turn to speak — it's about being present enough to truly hear. In a world full of noise, slowing down to listen can feel like a radical act. Yet it's in those moments of stillness and attention that real understanding begins. In this special Ask Matt Anything episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, we explore what it means to “listen up” — to engage with intention, empathy, and curiosity. Along the way, listener questions spark insights on how to slow down fast conversations, apply communication tools in real life, and navigate the nuances of culture and connection. Darryl Wright: When Enthusiasm Became Interference—Learning to Listen as a Scrum Master Read the full Show Notes and search through the world's largest audio library on Agile and Scrum directly on the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast website: http://bit.ly/SMTP_ShowNotes. "Wait stands for Why Am I Talking? Just ask yourself, wait, why am I talking? Is this the right moment for you to give an idea, or is this the right moment to just listen and let them have space to come up with ideas?" - Darryl Wright Early in his Agile journey, Darryl was evangelically enthusiastic about the principles and practices that had transformed his approach to leadership. He believed he had discovered the answers people were seeking, and his excitement manifested in a problematic pattern—he talked too much. Constantly jumping in with solutions, ideas, and suggestions, Darryl dominated conversations without realizing the impact. Then someone pulled him aside with a generous gift: "You're not really giving other people time to come up with ideas or take ownership of a problem." They introduced him to WAIT—Why Am I Talking?—an acronym that would fundamentally shift his coaching approach. This simple tool forced Darryl to pause before speaking and examine his motivations. Was he trying to prove himself? Did he think he knew better? Or was this genuinely the right moment to contribute? As he practiced this technique, Darryl discovered something profound: when he held space and waited, others would eventually step forward with insights and solutions. The concept of "small enough to try, safe enough to fail" became his framework for deciding when to intervene. Not every moment requires a Scrum Master to step in—sometimes the most powerful coaching happens in silence. By developing better skills in active listening and learning to hold space for others, Darryl transformed from someone who provided all the answers into someone who created the conditions for shared leadership to emerge. In this episode, we refer to David Marquet's episodes on the podcast for practical techniques on holding space and enabling leadership in others. Self-reflection Question: When was the last time you caught yourself jumping in with a solution before giving your team space to discover it themselves? What would happen if you waited just five more minutes? [The Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast Recommends]

Drawing from over 20 years in improv theater, Tane explains techniques such as "Yes, And" to validate patient concerns and build trust, staying present to avoid jumping to conclusions, and using nonverbal cues for better rapport. Through fun exercises like one-word stories, Tane demonstrates how these tools help healthcare professionals slow down, connect authentically, and navigate unpredictable situations, ultimately making interactions more enjoyable and effective for both providers and patients.Three Actionable Takeaways:· Stay Present and Listen Actively: In healthcare, it's easy to jump to conclusions based on experience, but staying present ensures accurate diagnoses and builds patient trust. Repeat the last thing a patient says to start your response, slowing down your thought process, demonstrating engagement, and allowing their full story to unfold naturally for better outcomes. Embrace "Yes, And": Validate patient ideas by starting responses with "Yes" to affirm what they've said, then add "And" to build collaboratively, exploring their concerns without dismissal. This fosters open dialogue, rapport, and partnership, turning potential conflicts into constructive conversations that enhance understanding and adherence to treatment plans. Incorporate Theatricality: Use exaggerated nonverbal cues, like expressive facial reactions and body language, to show genuine interest in patients' stories. This "theatricality" amplifies empathy, making interactions more authentic and helping patients feel heard, even if you're familiar with their condition, ultimately strengthening trust and the therapeutic relationship. Active Listening in Leadership Michael and Mick explored why active listening is at the core of great leadership. Rather than listening just to reply, they emphasized listening to truly understand — making people feel seen and valued. Mick shared a recent insight from the “experience revolution,” where 75% of client satisfaction is based on how people feel, not just on what gets done. Together, they highlighted how leaders can build stronger teams by asking questions like, “What are you proud of that we may not be recognizing?” Loyalty Beyond Reason in Hospitality Michael reflected on his personal loyalty to certain hotels, often choosing them over more convenient options. He compared this to sports stadiums and entertainment venues that deliver unforgettable experiences, inspiring loyalty that defies logic. Mick expanded on this concept of “loyalty beyond reason,” sharing lessons from global stadium designers who helped shape experiences for the World Cup and Olympics. Experiences Over Material Possessions Michael shared how he and his wife prioritize experiences over material goods, recognizing that memories last far longer than products like appliances or smartphones. Experiences spark creativity, curiosity, and joy, and he explained how leaders who design meaningful client experiences not only enrich their work but also strengthen long-term relationships and outcomes. Harmony in Work and Life Mick reframed the common idea of “work-life balance” into a broader vision of life integration. He encouraged leaders to step away from rigid linear thinking and embrace space for creativity and lateral ideas. With finite time, he advised finding mentors who offer honest feedback and guidance. Michael echoed these insights, noting that harmony — not balance — is what allows people to thrive personally and professionally. Embracing Challenges for Personal Growth The conversation turned to resilience and growth under pressure. Michael stressed the importance of focusing on what can be controlled — mindset, habits, and health — while Mick used his “orange juice” analogy to illustrate that how we respond to challenges reveals our preparation. Both agreed that being challenged is vital to staying relevant and avoiding stagnation, especially when surrounded by people who care enough to push us forward. Networking and Next Steps To close, Michael and Mick discussed ways listeners can continue learning from Mick's work through his Instagram, LinkedIn, and website. The conversation underscored how leadership rooted in listening, loyalty, and life integration can transform both personal growth and organizational success. Send us a textAre your conversations in networking events and client meetings leading straight to dead ends? This week on "The Selling Podcast," Mike and Scott tackle a critical skill that separates master networkers from awkward noodlers: the difference between "Nothing" and "Great" conversation starters.Mike and Scott break down the safe, lazy phrases that kill rapport (yes, we're looking at you, "How's the weather?" and "Busy day?"). They reveal why these are just statements about facts that give your prospect nothing to build on, wasting valuable time. Then, they pivot to the powerful framework of Great Conversation Starters. Learn to swap boring small talk for open-ended questions that spark genuine connection, interest, and depth, such as:Personal & Relational: "What's keeping you excited lately?"Situational: "How did you get into what you do?"Deeper & Engaging: "What's a project or goal you're working on right now?"The golden rule is simple: Nothing starters are statements; Great starters are questions about stories, emotions, or choices. When it comes to leading a team, there's no such thing as too much information.Good leadership is about good communication. And for General Stanley McChrystal, that means creating a culture of free-flowing information: “The goal is to have everyone know everything all the time,” he says.McChrystal is a retired four-star general, former commander of US and international forces in Afghanistan, and a renowned leadership expert. In his experience building cohesive teams in complex environments, he's discovered that successful teams are built on a “shared consciousness [where] all have a common contextual understanding of what the situation is.” The key to creating that kind of culture, he says, is radical transparency — from leaders and subordinates alike. Whatever your position, “You are responsible for informing other people of things that they need to know,” he says.In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, McChrystal and host Matt Abrahams discuss how to build shared consciousness within teams, how to communicate across cultural divides, and how to lead with clarity, context, and character. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:General Stanley McChrystalGeneral McChrystal's Books: On Character / Team of Teams155. How can neuroinclusion transform leadership and workplace culture?Creating truly neuroinclusive workplaces requires a fundamental shift in mindset, from seeing neurodivergence as a deficit to embracing it as a form of diversity. This means moving beyond a purely extractive business case, practicing cultural humility, and rethinking communication, onboarding, workflow, and even the physical environment. By focusing on the needs of neurodivergent employees – the “canaries in the coal mine” – leaders can create healthier, more dignified, and more productive workplaces for everyone. On this episode of Just One Q, Dominique chats with Dr. Ludmila Praslova, author of The Canary Code: A Guide to Neurodiversity, Dignity, and Intersectional Belonging at Work. They explore how a neuroinclusive approach can fundamentally reshape leadership and workplace culture and why leaders must move beyond a narrow, extractive business case towards a model of “inclusive thriving.” They discuss practical ways to create more dignified and flexible workplaces that support neurodivergent employees, ultimately making them better and healthier for everyone.Keep Up with Ludmila:https://www.linkedin.com/in/ludmila-praslova/Try Learning Snippets:https://dialectic.solutions/signupContact Us to Be a Guest on Just One Q:https://dialectic.solutions/podcast-guest

In this powerful exploration of Proverbs 8, we discover the profound personification of wisdom as a woman calling out to humanity. This chapter invites us to seek wisdom above all earthly treasures, reminding us that true understanding comes from God. We're challenged to consider how often we chase after material wealth when the richest prize - divine wisdom - is freely offered. The passage beautifully illustrates wisdom's role in creation, standing alongside God as the world was formed. This imagery evokes Christ as the embodiment of God's wisdom, present from the beginning. As we reflect on this, we're encouraged to see Jesus as the ultimate source of wisdom in our lives. How might our decisions change if we consistently sought His guidance? This message urges us to prioritize spiritual insight over worldly knowledge, reminding us that in finding wisdom, we find life itself.### Sermon Notes:#### Introduction:- **Scriptural Focus:** Proverbs 8:1-5; wisdom is personified as a woman calling out to mankind.- **Prayer:** Opening prayer thanking God for His presence and guidance, specifically asking for wisdom.#### Main Themes:1. **Personification of Wisdom:** - Wisdom is depicted as a woman whose counsel brings life. - Proverbs often personifies wisdom as a guide and teacher.2. **The Role of Proverbs:** - Proverbs are guidelines, not commandments, designed to keep us on a righteous path by providing moral and practical guidance. - The poetic nature of Proverbs enriches its teachings.3. **Message of Active Listening:** - Wisdom and understanding are calling; it is imperative for us to listen and apply these teachings to our lives. 4. **Wisdom's Offerings:** - Offers prudence and sense—qualities necessary for godly living. - Prudence involves practical wisdom and foresight, while sense denotes insight and self-discipline.5. **Contrast Between Wisdom and Worldly Teachings:** - Wisdom speaks noble truths, whereas worldly teachings, as outlined in 2 Timothy, can lead astray. - The world often elevates education over genuine wisdom, leading to corruption and misunderstanding.6. **Material Wealth vs. Spiritual Insight:** - Wealth is temporary and cannot satisfy the deeper longing for meaning and purpose. - Wisdom provides lasting value and guides one in the proper use of material resources.7. **Wisdom's Divine Origin:** - Wisdom was with God at the beginning of creation. - This section parallels teachings in the New Testament about Christ's divinity and the eternal nature of wisdom.8. **Final Exhortation:** - A call to seek wisdom and instruction actively—“finding wisdom is equated to finding life.”#### Practical Applications:1. **Cultivate Active Listening:** - Pay attention and be attentive to wisdom's call in everyday life. - Reflect on areas in your life where wisdom can be applied more effectively.2. **Prioritize Spiritual Wealth:** - Focus on gaining wisdom and understanding over accumulating material wealth. - Evaluate where your resources (time, money, effort) are being invested to shift towards spiritual pursuits.3. **Embrace Counsel and Correction:** - Be open to receiving godly advice and correction as part of personal growth. - Ensure regular scripture reading and prayer for aligning with God's wisdom.#### Discussion Questions:1. How can we better position ourselves to hear and respond to wisdom's call in our daily routines?2. In what ways can the pursuit of material wealth distract us from gaining true wisdom? Can you identify personal examples?3. Discuss a time when you rejected or received wise counsel. What impact did it have on the outcome?4. How can we as a community support one another in seeking and applying wisdom in all aspects of life?5. What are some practical steps we can take to ensure we are valuing spiritual wisdom over societal norms and education systems?

Be ready, stay grounded, and communicate clearly — no matter what's at stake.Communicating under pressure isn't just a useful skill — it can be the difference between escalation and resolution. For Chris Voss, former FBI hostage negotiator and CEO of The Black Swan Group, it's a daily discipline built on empathy, self-regulation, and intentional listening. In this expanded conversation from our Spontaneous Speaking miniseries, Voss offers a rare window into the mindset and methods that helped him show up calm, focused, and adaptable when the pressure is sky-high.“Emotional intelligence is an insane accelerator to outcomes,” Voss shares, explaining how empathy, tone, and timing can shift the direction of any conversation. He breaks down techniques like labeling and mirroring, explores how to use silence and word choice strategically, and explains why overthinking can be just as risky as acting too fast. From gut-level pattern recognition to tactical use of voice, Voss shows how communication becomes more impactful when we're not trying to control — but to connect. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Voss and host Matt Abrahams dive into how negotiation techniques developed for life-or-death situations can be applied far beyond them — offering powerful takeaways for anyone who needs to think clearly under pressure, stay agile in the moment, and communicate effectively when it matters most.Episode Reference Links:Chris Voss Chris's Book: Never Split the Difference Ep.197 Prep or Perish: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (1 of 3)Ep.198 Pause and Effect: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (2 of 3)Ep.199 Blunder Pressure: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (3 of 3)Ep.203 No Script, No Problem: Final Secrets to Speaking Under Pressure (Bonus) Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:50) - Path to Hostage Negotiation (03:42) - Power of Emotional Intelligence (05:00) - Staying Calm Under Pressure (06:10) - Mental Prep & Mindset (07:18) - Trusting Your Gut (07:58) - Avoiding Overthinking (09:01) - Flexibility in Negotiations (10:15) - Listen More, Talk Less (10:31) - Labeling & Mirroring (12:51) - Tone Shapes Impact (14:06) - The Final Three Questions (19:37) - Conclusion *****Thank you to our sponsors:Strawberry.me. Leadership Lessons from Show Business In this episode, Tom and Adrienne chat with Steven Puri and trace his unexpected path from a “code monkey” in Northern Virginia to an Academy Award–winning visual-effects producer and later a tech entrepreneur. Steven shares how he bridged left-brain engineering and right-brain creativity on films like Independence Day, Braveheart, and several David Fincher projects. He reflects on lessons learned in Hollywood—managing creatives, nurturing “lightbulb” moments, and building culture—that carry over into hybrid and remote leadership. Long before remote work became a buzzword, Steven was orchestrating VFX teams across studios in Los Angeles, London, and Sydney, balancing creative, financial, and logistical mindsets over distance—an early test of distributed leadership that today's managers face. Throughout the conversation, candid anecdotes like the famed “Bart” trailer story illustrate why inviting every voice can spark game-changing ideas. As our work (and often our brains) has scattered in today's culture, Steven is dedicated to bringing us the tools for intentional focus. Here are a few of the gems gleaned from this fun and flowing conversation: Embrace Diverse Talents: Success in both film and tech comes from uniting creatives, technical experts, and business minds around a shared goal, much like assembling a movie crew. Manage Creativity with Intention: Great leaders know how to create the right environment for creativity—sometimes by giving people more than one project, or by encouraging "rubber ducking" (talking through problems out loud). Best Idea Wins Culture: The most effective teams foster a safe space where anyone, regardless of role, can contribute ideas—echoing Steven Spielberg's approach of valuing input from everyone, even the “coffee boy.” Hire for Passion and Culture Fit: Skills can be developed, but passion and alignment with the team's mission are essential. Hiring the right people is more important than micromanaging. Purposeful Markers and Storytelling: Leaders should set clear markers and use storytelling to help teams understand where they are and where they're going, just as a film uses acts and foreshadowing. Active Listening is Key: The best leaders practice active listening, seeking feedback from users, team members, and even critics, and using it to improve. Leadership is a Practice: Leadership isn't just a set of concepts—it's something you do and refine every day, much like honing a craft in show business. Steven is the Founder and CEO of The Sukha Company with the mission to help millions of people find their focus, achieve more and have a healthy work life. Steven's career started as a newscaster/interviewer for the #1 youth news show in the DC/Baltimore market (on WTTG-TV) and then as a junior software engineer & Thomas J. Watson Scholar at IBM. After attending USC in Los Angeles, he began working in film production and produced computer-generated visual effects for 14 movies including Independence Day which won the Academy Award for Visual Effects. Steven's first tech company was Centropolis Effects that produced those CGI effects, and he eventually sold it to the German media conglomerate Das Werk when he was 28. Steven then produced some indie films and eventually went studio-side to develop and produce live-action features as a VP of Development & Production at 20th Century Fox (running the Die Hard and Wolverine franchises) and an EVP at DreamWorks Pictures for Kurtzman-Orci Productions where he worked on Star Trek, Transformers and more. After Fox, Steven returned to building tech companies and founded The Sukha Company - ‘sukha' means ‘happiness from self-fulfillment' in Sanskrit. The Sukha is a focus app that bundles all the tools necessary to have a focused experience and a healthy, productive workday. Steven lives in Austin, TX now. In the third part of our "Communication Lies Leaders Believe" series, Tammy tackles one of the most common myths leaders tell themselves: "I'm a good listener." She powerfully argues that listening is not just about having an open-door policy. It's about seeking to understand from the other person's perspective. Tammy breaks down the three levels of listening—transactional, active, and transformational—and challenges leaders to move beyond simply hearing words. The true measure of a leader's listening skills isn't their intention; it's whether their team feels seen, heard, and understood. This episode provides the tools to stop being a "fixer" and start being a true leader who co-creates solutions. Key Takeaways for Leaders The Listening Lie: Believing you're a good listener just because no one says otherwise is a dangerous myth. Listening to Understand vs. Listening to Respond: Avoid the trap of "reloading your response." True listening is about gaining clarity, not just providing an answer. The Three Levels of Listening: Transactional: Hearing words and giving a one-sided, often pre-determined, response. Active: Asking clarifying questions but still pushing toward your own agenda. Transformational: Listening for meaning, emotion, and impact, then reflecting back to ensure the other person feels truly understood. The Problem with Being a "Fixer": Your team doesn't always want you to solve their problems; they want you to hear them and co-create a solution together. The True Test: You are a good listener only when your team can tell you specifically what you do that makes them feel seen, heard, and understood. In This Episode, You'll Learn The difference between transactional, active, and transformational listening. How to stop "listening to respond" and start "listening to understand." Why an open-door policy doesn't automatically make you a good listener. A powerful reframing technique to use in conversations that will help your team feel valued and understood. How to challenge your own listening lie and create a two-way dialogue loop. Ready to stop feeding the lies that are holding you back? By lightening up your communication, you can build serious connections.Humor in communication isn't all fun and games. According to Alison Wood Brooks and Naomi Bagdonas, levity is one of the most serious tools we have in building successful connections.Wood Brooks and Bagdonas, both teachers, authors, and experts in the field of communication, recognize how crucial levity is to our professional and personal interactions. “It's easy to think of [humor] as this extra bonus thing,” says Wood Brooks. “What we find is it's incredibly core to how people are relating to each other.” Bagdonas agrees: “When there's the presence of laughter in team meetings, those teams are more successful and more creative. Leaders with a sense of humor—not even a good sense of humor—are seen as more motivating, more admired, [and] their teams report being more engaged.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Wood Brooks and Bagdonas join host Matt Abrahams to explore levity as a mindset, or as Bagdonas puts it, “Navigating life on the precipice of a smile.” Together, they share how lightness and humor can break barriers, bridge connections, and unlock the door to better communication. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Alison Wood Brooks Alison's Book: TalkNaomi Bagdonas Naomi's Book: Humor, SeriouslyEp.13 Make 'Em Laugh: How to Use Humor as a Secret Weapon in Your CommunicationEp.73 Listen Up: Why It's Better to Be Interested Than InterestingEp.89 Listen, Listen, Listen: How to Build Deep ConnectionsEp.169 Don't Be a ZQ: Make Your Conversations Count Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (03:13) - Talk Tour Insights (04:33) - Top Advice on Asking Questions (06:43) - Guiding Principles for Leaders (09:17) - Importance of Levity (11:17) - Why Humor Matters (13:06) - Letting Go of Comfort (16:24) - Overthinking Levity (18:30) - Creating Space for Levity (22:02) - Conclusion *****This Episode is sponsored by Stanford. In this short segment of the Revenue Builders Podcast, we revisit the discussion with John True, General Partner at Cultivation Capital, to explore the critical role of emotional intelligence (EQ) in sales leadership. From reading the room to eliminating partial listening, John shares insights on why understanding personal and professional wins is as important as the deal itself. Is listening a hidden superpower we've overlooked? You've heard of Active Listening, but what is Radical Listening and why does it matter?Episode SummaryOn this episode, I'm joined by Professor Christian van Nieuwerburgh, an academic who also describes himself as 'Coach on a Motorcycle'. He's on the show to help me explore what he calls 'Radical Listening'.Christian is Professor of Coaching and Positive Psychology at the University of East London and the co-author, with Dr Robert Biswas-Diener, of 'Radical Listening: The Art of True Connection'.The book offers a research-backed but deeply human exploration of what it means to really hear someone — and how that act alone can change lives. In the book and in his work, Christian blends academic rigour with road-tested coaching insights, drawing from both the lecture hall and long rides through open landscapes. He invites us to look at listening not just as a skill, but as a way of being. With a background in positive psychology and a passion for connection, Christian brings a perspective that's as practical as it is profound. We talk about how listening — when done with presence and intention — becomes far more than a communication technique. It becomes a way of affirming identity, offering empathy, and shaping culture. Christian shares why well-meaning advice often misses the mark, the difference between social and cognitive listening, and what it takes to be with someone, rather than just hearing them. This isn't just for leaders or coaches; it's for anyone who wants to have better conversations, create stronger relationships, and be more human in how they engage with others. Listening, as we discuss, isn't neutral. It's powerful, personal, and radically transformative.Guest BiographyProfessor Christian van Nieuwerburgh is a globally recognised executive coach, academic, and author, holding the title of Professor of Coaching and Positive Psychology at the University of East London. As Managing Director of the International Centre for Coaching Psychology and Executive Director at Growth Coaching International, he bridges rigorous research with practice. He co-authored Radical Listening: The Art of True Connection (with Dr Robert Biswas‑Diener), which reorients listening from a background skill to a central act of human connection.Famously known as the “Coach on a Motorcycle,” Christian combines his love for the open road with his dedication to how we hear and are heard. Some conversations are uncomfortable, but avoiding them comes with a cost. You want a more successful career, a more fulfilling relationship, a more meaningful life? What if all that's standing in your way — are the conversations that you're avoiding?“Most things that we want in life are on the other side of a difficult conversation,” says Jenn Wynn, a professor at NYU Stern School of Business and previously the director of education at the Obama Foundation. For nearly 10 years, she has taught a course on difficult conversations that equips people to communicate through discomfort in pursuit of what they want. “Sometimes it's a difficult conversation with a loved one, a colleague, a boss… sometimes it's a difficult conversation with myself,” she says. “Are you going to give up on your biggest dreams because you weren't willing to step out of your comfort zone?”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Wynn and host Matt Abrahams discuss how to build the “hard but worth-it skills” necessary for difficult communication. Whether it's asking for a raise, setting boundaries, or addressing conflict, Wynn's insights show that the conversations you're avoiding aren't just holding you back — they're keeping you from the life you really want.To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Jenn WynnThe H.I. How do you stay clear, calm, and precise when every word counts and there's no room for error?Staying calm and focused while translating high-stakes conversations in real time isn't just a language skill — it's a masterclass in communication under pressure. And for Giampaolo Bianchi, simultaneous interpreter for the United Nations and World Health Organization, it's a challenge he meets with presence, precision, and a whole lot of preparation. In this expanded conversation from our Spontaneous Speaking series, Bianchi offers a behind-the-scenes look at how he prepares for — and performs in — moments where being calm, in control, and adaptable are essential.“We don't translate words — we translate ideas,” Bianchi explains, highlighting the mindset shift that allows interpreters to go beyond language and convey meaning with clarity and nuance. He shares the role of rigorous preparation, physical grounding, and mental focus in his work, and explains how tools like note systems, pre-session rituals, and active listening help manage cognitive load during live interpretation. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Bianchi and host Matt Abrahams explore how the principles of simultaneous interpretation apply far beyond the booth — offering valuable strategies for anyone who needs to communicate effectively under pressure, adapt in the moment, and ensure their smartest communication happens without a script.Episode Reference Links:Giampaolo BianchiEp.197 Prep or Perish: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (1 of 3)Ep.198 Pause and Effect: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (2 of 3)Ep.199 Blunder Pressure: Mastering In-the-Moment Communication (3 of 3)Ep.203 No Script, No Problem: Final Secrets to Speaking Under Pressure (Bonus) Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:42) - Becoming a UN Interpreter (03:50) - Staying Calm Under Pressure (05:03) - Translating Emotion, Not Just Words (06:10) - Memory and Focus Techniques (07:51) - The Power of Preparation (09:17) - Pre-Meeting Rituals and Readiness (10:34) - Handling Mistakes in Real Time (11:44) - Interpreter Habits in Daily Life (12:45) - The Final Three Questions (17:28) - Conclusion *****This Episode is sponsored by Stanford. Arguments escalate into relationship disasters daily. Trial attorney Jefferson Fisher shares courtroom tactics he uses to turn conflict into connection!Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1181What We Discuss with Jefferson Fisher:Use time to regulate emotions in conflict. Take a breath before responding and slow down your speech. This prevents escalation and keeps you in control rather than entering "ignition mode" where you say things you regret.Every person has surface and depth, and hostile behavior often masks deeper struggles. Asking "What's your biggest struggle?" can transform confrontational situations into connection.Approach conversations with "something to learn" not "something to prove." When you try to win arguments, you lose relationships. Focus on understanding rather than being right to achieve better outcomes.Handle interruptions strategically. Let them interrupt once, resume where you left off without acknowledging their interruption, then address it directly if they interrupt again: "I can't hear you when you interrupt me."Show you're listening with one simple question. Before sharing your own story or response, ask one follow-up question about what they just shared. This makes people feel heard and valued in conversation. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps!
