Arguments escalate into relationship disasters daily. Trial attorney Jefferson Fisher shares courtroom tactics he uses to turn conflict into connection!Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1181What We Discuss with Jefferson Fisher:Use time to regulate emotions in conflict. Take a breath before responding and slow down your speech. This prevents escalation and keeps you in control rather than entering "ignition mode" where you say things you regret.Every person has surface and depth, and hostile behavior often masks deeper struggles. Asking "What's your biggest struggle?" can transform confrontational situations into connection.Approach conversations with "something to learn" not "something to prove." When you try to win arguments, you lose relationships. Focus on understanding rather than being right to achieve better outcomes.Handle interruptions strategically. Let them interrupt once, resume where you left off without acknowledging their interruption, then address it directly if they interrupt again: "I can't hear you when you interrupt me."Show you're listening with one simple question. Before sharing your own story or response, ask one follow-up question about what they just shared. This makes people feel heard and valued in conversation. And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Join host Steve Perkins and Greenhouse Team members Sundie Marquardt and Gabe Smith for a raw, relatable dive into active listening on the Roots Up Podcast. With humor, heart, and practical wisdom, this episode explores how to listen without pushing your own agenda. This applies to parenting adult kids, interacting with colleagues, our relationships, and so much more. Expect actionable takeaways to grow as a leader and human, rooted in Greenhouse's mission to help you grow the life you want. Key Discussion Points: How active listening sets aside agendas to fully hear others, fostering deeper connections. Why unsolicited advice to adult children often backfires, and listening respects their autonomy. How body language and curiosity signal genuine presence, while zoning out creates disconnect. Why balancing your need to be understood with others' need to be heard requires intentional deference. How acting like a listener, like pinching your leg to stay quiet, can shift underlying beliefs. How society's obsession with efficiency prioritizes problem-solving over relational connection. Why prioritizing relationships motivates empathetic leadership, even in tough moments. Action Items for Listeners: Practice Silence: In your next conversation, pinch your leg or pause to resist interjecting; ask, “How can I help?” to stay listener-focused. Use Mirroring: Reflect back what you hear with, “What I'm hearing is… Did I get that right?” to ensure others feel understood. Check Assumptions: Before advising, ask yourself, “Am I assuming I know their path?” Let their perspective lead. Team Listening Exercise: Start a meeting with, “How are we showing up today?” to practice collective listening and build trust. Our ears afford us the ability to do so, but all too frequently we don't take the time to fully hear what's being said.Let's see, hear and feel waht we can do about that...Resource7 essential NLP Techniques for stronger communicationshttps://nlpyourself.com/7-essential-nlp-techniques-for-better-communication/

Do you often forget things or lose track of time? Do you find it hard to stay focused on everyday tasks? Today, Jay reunites with the ever-popular Dr. Daniel Amen, a pioneering psychiatrist and clinical neuroscientist, to unravel one of the most misunderstood mental health topics today: ADHD. With society bombarded by endless distractions, overstimulation, and information overload, many are left questioning whether they truly have ADHD or are simply overwhelmed by the modern world. Dr. Amen cuts through the confusion by drawing from over three decades of clinical experience and brain imaging research. He clarifies that real ADHD is not a trend or a convenient label—it’s a genetic, neurological condition that can be identified through consistent behavioral patterns and even brain scans. What makes this conversation especially transformative is its focus on practical solutions and healing. Rather than defaulting to medication, Dr. Amen emphasizes a whole-brain, whole-body approach—starting with sleep, nutrition, and screen time. He cites compelling evidence showing how dietary changes and digital detoxes can significantly reduce symptoms in children. Jay and Dr. Amen also explore the emotional toll of untreated ADHD, including its links to addiction, depression, academic failure, and fractured relationships. Together, they challenge the stigma, revealing that ADHD is often both overdiagnosed and underdiagnosed, particularly in women and individuals without hyperactivity. In this interview, you'll learn: How to Naturally Improve Focus Without Medication How to Use Diet to Reduce ADHD Symptoms How to Identify the 7 Types of ADHD How to Reframe Negative Thoughts with Brain Training How to Create a Brain-Healthy Morning Routine How to Navigate ADHD in Romantic Relationships How to Advocate for ADHD Support in Schools and Work Your brain is not broken. Welcome to episode #988 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Julian Treasure believes the world needs to learn how to listen again. You may know him from his TED Talk, How To Speak So That People Want To Listen - one of the most viewed of all time (over 65 million views). But long before going viral, Julian was helping companies and individuals rethink their relationship with sound - as founder of The Sound Agency, author of How To Be Heard and Sound Business, and now with his new book Sound Affects - How Sound Shapes Our Lives, Our Wellbeing and Our Planet. Julian's work spans science, music, psychology, and design - from biophilic soundscapes in office buildings to sonic branding for global brands. In this conversation, he breaks down why we confuse hearing with listening, how silence is often the most powerful part of any conversation, and why we need to teach listening the same way we teach reading and writing. We also explore the risks of AI-generated music, the future of compassion in polarized discourse, and why democracy itself might hinge on our ability to listen consciously. Julian also recently launched The Listening Society (a community for anyone interested in the power listening and sound). Julian's life is a testament to the power of sound... and why we must all become better listeners. Enjoy the conversation… Running time: 51:06. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Have you ever been caught in a conversation where you felt unheard or misunderstood? On this episode of the Do Good to Lead Well podcast, I'm exploring the transformative power of effective listening. With insights from Stephen Covey's timeless principle of seeking first to understand, and a revealing study from Zenger Folkman in Harvard Business Review, I uncover the real markers of great listening. It's not just about nodding silently; it's about engaging mindfully, channeling curiosity through thoughtful questions. These skills help us navigate today's polarized landscape and build bridges where there were none.Active listening is more than a skill; it's an art that can mend divides and strengthen connections. Drawing from my own experiences, I share how misplaced advice during an enthusiastic travel story highlighted the pitfalls of assuming rather than understanding. Empathy and emotional intelligence are key, especially in a tech-driven world where face-to-face interactions are rare. Have you ever asked yourself: "Why does my wife seem so distant, even when we're together?" "Am I feeling more like a roommate than a partner?" "What are the subtle signs our marriage is drifting, before it's too late?" If these questions echo in your mind, today's conversation is a powerful wake-up call to the silent killer of connection. Resentment isn't always loud screaming matches or slammed doors. It's the creeping silence, the growing disinterest, the widening emotional distance. It's when she starts emotionally withdrawing while still going through the motions of life with you. Most men wait for a blow-up to take action, but by then, she might already be emotionally gone. This episode is about catching the drift long before the disconnect becomes irreversible. Become the best husband you can: https://bit.ly/deamarriageyoutube In this vital conversation, we dig into: The Unseen Buildup: Ignored Emotions, Mental Load, Unspoken Expectations. She's likely been signaling for months, maybe even years. You might have heard the words ("I'm tired," "You never ask me how I'm doing," "It's always me managing everything"), but you didn't feel their weight. She doesn't want you to solve her problems; she wants you to see her. The hidden trap: men often assume "no conflict = no problem," but most women emotionally disconnect long before they ever fight. How Emotional Debt Compounds in Marriage. Every unacknowledged frustration is like putting a charge on a credit card with no payment plan. Eventually, she hits her limit and withdraws love, affection, and energy—not out of spite, but self-preservation. This emotional debt often manifests as phrases like, "I always have to ask," "I can't count on him," or "He doesn't even notice anymore." Just like in finance, emotional debt isn't a crisis—until it is. What She Really Means When She Says, “I'm Fine.” This seemingly simple phrase is often code for, "I don't feel safe opening up to you right now." It signals, "You haven't earned the right to hear what's really going on." Most men take it literally, or defensively, rather than responding with curiosity and genuine inquiry. Here's what research and observation highlight about resentment and marital health: Studies show that consistent emotional invalidation is linked to a 30% increase in marital dissatisfaction over time. When a partner perceives an uneven distribution of the mental load, it can lead to a 40% higher likelihood of emotional withdrawal. Ignoring subtle relationship red flags for more than 6 months significantly decreases the chances of successful conflict resolution without intervention. www.thedadedge.com/friday211 www.thedadedge.com/alliance

Have you ever given or received advice, only to realise it didn't land the way you hoped? This week I explore the common (and sometimes uncomfortable) experience of unsolicited advice—when someone offers suggestions or solutions without being asked. I reflect on how this type of advice, even when well-intentioned, can feel dismissive, create disconnection, and even lead to codependency. Support doesn't always mean solving. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can offer is our full, caring attention. In this episode you will learn: Why unsolicited advice can feel invalidating or emotionally disconnecting What some of the internal motivators are behind giving advice The importance of presence and co-regulation over rushing to fix someone's feelings Helpful alternatives to unsolicited advice Reflective journal prompts to consider - How do you feel when someone gives you unsolicited advice? How to have the conversations that are most difficult — and most important. Before you can have hard conversations with others, you need to have an honest conversation with yourself. That's the counterintuitive advice from Sheila Heen, who says our own internal narratives often derail our attempts at negotiation and conflict resolution."The first negotiation is actually a negotiation I have with myself about my own story," explains Heen, a Harvard Law School lecturer and co-author of Difficult Conversations: How to Discuss What Matters Most. When entering challenging interactions, she recommends a powerful shift where we consider that our perspective is only one side of the story. "If I can shift my purpose from convincing you of something to just understanding how you see it and why we might see it differently, that actually is more likely to generate a good conversation with less defensiveness for both of us."In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Heen joins Matt Abrahams to explore effective communication in high-stakes situations. From giving and receiving feedback with her “ACE” framework (Appreciation, Coaching, and Evaluation) to recognizing the "degrees of difficulty" in disagreements, she offers practical strategies for having productive conversations even when emotions run high.Episode Reference Links:Sheila Heen Sheila's Books: Difficult Conversations / Thanks for the Feedback Ep.144 Communicating Through Conflict: How to Get Along with AnyoneEp.136 The Art of Disagreeing Without Conflict: Navigating the Nuance Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (01:36) - Managing Anxiety in Tough Conversations (04:15) - Why Emotions Matter (07:23) - Shifting the Story We Tell Ourselves (08:41) - Starting with the Real Issue (10:20) - Getting Unstuck in Conflict (13:18) - ACE: The Three Types of Feedback (16:20) - Making Feedback Actionable (18:40) - Finding Common Ground (20:17) - The Final Three Questions (27:32) - Conclusion *****This episode is brought to you by Babbel. What to listen for:"To truly understand your dog, embrace the power of observation, question the environment, and engage with the nuances of their behavior."Our hosts, Robin Greubel, Crystal Wing, and Stacy Barnett, take a deep dive into the role of critical thinking for handlers. We've all been there—reading a viral dog training post and feeling an emotional gut-punch, or second-guessing ourselves after watching a training video. We need to learn to slow down, analyze, and ask better questions. Robin emphasizes watching videos without sound to assess the clarity of intent. Crystal introduces her favorite training reflection game: pause and predict. And Stacy reflects on how questioning cues—like saying “drop”—led to big lightbulb moments in her own training. Our hosts share how truly understanding what (and why) you're training builds better habits and stronger bonds between handler and dog. Whether it's breaking down complex skills like a retrieve into more manageable pieces or recognizing how forward motion might unintentionally reinforce barking, it's all about peeling back the layers. The Dames of Detection look into how fear-based language can cloud judgment, and how to filter training advice by considering the source, the context, and your own dog's needs. Crystal encourages following trainers with different views to stretch your thinking. Robin adds that respectful, private conversations often lead to deeper clarity than public debates. Most importantly, critical thinking is a skill, not a fixed trait. Like any skill, it improves with practice. So whether you're evaluating a post, adjusting a cue, or watching your dog's body language, stay curious. Be open. Ask questions. In the end, sharper thinking leads to stronger training, and your dog feels the difference.Key Topics:“What Exactly Are You Training in This Video?” (00:00)Focus on the Message You're Trying to Teach (08:55)What Stops Trainers from Thinking Critically?
