Hello to you listening in Grants Pass, Oregon! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Once upon a time there was a young girl who lived with her wicked stepmother and wicked stepsister. One day the girl went to the well to fetch water. While there an old crone asked her for a drink of the cold water she was drawing up from the well. The girl gave her a drink and as a reward for her kindness the crone said, “Each time you speak pearls, jewels and roses will fall from your lips.” Seeing this magic the wicked stepmother sent the wicked stepsister to the well to claim her own reward. At the well a beautiful princess asks for water; but the wicked stepsister says, “Draw your own water! I'm not your servant.” “Ah,” said the princess, “That is unfortunate. From this day forward scorpions, lizards and toads will fall from your lips when you speak.” Click HERE to learn more  Story Prompt: What if we could see our words even before we spoke them? The secret to building habits that stick.Whether you want to read more books or exercise more regularly, BJ Fogg has good news. “Habits are easier to form than most people think,” he says, “If you do it in the right way.”As the founder and director of Stanford's Behavior Design Lab, Fogg has devoted much of his career to researching human psychology, motivation, and behavior. According to him, habit formation isn't a product of simply doing something over and over again. “It's not a function of repetition,” he says, “it's a function of emotion.”As Fogg discusses with host Matt Abrahams in this Rethinks episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, bringing our behavior in line with our goals is easier than we think — we just have to know the emotional levers to pull.Episode Reference Links:BJ Fogg Fogg's Book: Tiny HabitsConnect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (03:04) - The Information-Action Fallacy (04:47) - The Behavior Model: Motivation, Ability, Prompt (06:27) - Designing a Reading Habit (08:05) - What Is a Habit? What if mastering communication in your marriage as a physician could be as transformative as learning a life-saving procedure in residency?  In this second part of a two-part conversation, Dr. Michael Myers shares insights from his extensive experience treating physician couples, emphasizing the value of professional help in facilitating communication during protected times like retreats or dates. He illustrates how a third party can help rephrase defensive or hierarchical language, common in medicine's decisive environment, into softer, more effective expressions, such as turning "you're stubborn" into "I feel you're digging in your heels," to foster understanding without offense.  Dr. Myers discusses dynamics when the physician is female, noting women's multifaceted identities beyond medicine and potential role reversals where husbands manage home life, but warns of conflicts arising from feelings of being taken for granted or loneliness. He highlights red flags like unexplained drinking or affairs, urging early articulation of issues to prevent escalation, and notes that most couples recover from affairs by entering a "new normal" with professional guidance.  For same-sex couples, he addresses communication stereotypes: avoidance in male pairs or overthinking in female ones, while stressing commonalities in all relationships. In dual-physician marriages, intellectualization may dominate, but reviewing arrangements like part-time work during child-rearing years and supporting paternity leave promotes respect and balance. Parting tips include finding uninterrupted time, transitioning from work mode, taking risks by being vulnerable about insecurities, and converting individual therapy into couples work to avoid exclusion.  Three Actionable Takeaways: Seek professional facilitation for tough conversations: Use a therapist to rephrase defensive language and ensure both partners feel heard, preventing escalation into arguments or name-calling. Regularly review relationship dynamics: Check in on sacrifices like relocations or part-time work, honoring promises and expressing appreciation to avoid resentment or feelings of being sidelined. Take communication risks during protected time: Be vulnerable about insecurities or feelings, such as loneliness, to deepen connection, and avoid defaulting to safe topics, use this safe space to address meaningful issues. About the Show: Succeed In Medicine covers patient interactions, burnout, career growth, personal finance, and more. Why beliefs can either cap our potential or push us toward possibility. What you believe about yourself could be holding you back. Fortunately, Nir Eyal says beliefs aren't truths — and you can choose new ones.Eyal is a former lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Stanford d.school, a celebrated author, and a renowned expert on human behavior and potential. His latest book, Beyond Belief, reveals how limiting beliefs — like “I'm a bad communicator” — quietly shape what we see, feel, and do. “A belief doesn't have to be true” to limit our potential, he says. But the same holds in reverse: a belief doesn't have to be true to expand who and what we can become. “Beliefs are tools, not truths. It just has to be useful.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Eyal and host Matt Abrahams explore how to identify the beliefs that hold us back — and how to replace them with ones that propel us forward. From keeping a belief journal to practicing perspective-shifting “turnarounds,” Eyal offers practical tips for rewriting the stories we tell ourselves and becoming the people we want to be.To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Nir EyalNir's Book: Beyond Belief104. Struggling to balance a demanding medical career with a healthy marriage? It might be more common than you think. In this part one of two eye-opening episode of Succeed In Medicine podcast host Dr. Bradley Block interviews Dr. Michael F. Myers, as they delve into frequent issues in physician marriages, including communication gaps, workaholism, and using work as an escape from home tensions. Dr. Myers shares insights on recognizing when overwork crosses into avoidance, the impact of poor role models from past generations, and practical ways to transition from work mode to family presence. Key discussions include protecting couple time amid busy schedules, handling defensiveness in conversations, and fostering intentional dates or "grown-up time" away from kids. They also touch on generational shifts in medicine, where younger physicians prioritize life balance over endless dedication, and the importance of transparency about personal costs of overwork. Dr. Myers emphasizes treating marital communication as a skill to master, like medical training, and highlights resources like retreats for enrichment. Whether you're a physician navigating marital discord or supporting a partner in medicine, this episode offers compassionate guidance to prevent burnout at home, strengthen relationships, and model healthy dynamics for kids, setting the stage for part two next week. Three Actionable Takeaways: Protect Couple Time Intentionally: Schedule uninterrupted "grown-up time" daily e.g., 30 minutes post-work with no distractions like TV or phones, or bi-weekly dates even low-cost walks; train kids to respect boundaries to rebuild connection beyond co-parenting, reducing feelings of drifting apart. Create a Work-to-Home Transition Ritual: Build in buffer time after shifts, whether a commute unwind, quick run, or quiet moment to shift from decisiveness at work to presence at home; recognize when exhaustion is temporary and communicate needs to avoid guilt or resentment. Listen Without Defensiveness: When a spouse flags overwork or avoidance, pause and reflect instead of rationalizing; treat communication as a learnable skill like medicine, seeking resources like marital retreats or therapy to address root issues before they escalate to fights or disconnection. What does it really mean to trust someone—and how intentional are you about the choices you make every day? You'll rethink trust from the inside out as Charles Feltman challenges the idea that trust is vague or emotional and reframes it as a conscious decision to make something you value vulnerable to another person's actions. You'll learn how trust works in both directions and why being trustworthy isn't enough if you're unwilling to extend trust to others. Charles shares a practical, behavior-based framework built around four key domains—care, sincerity, reliability, and competence—along with real workplace examples that show how trust can be strengthened, assessed, repaired, or rebuilt through honest conversation and clear commitments. Charles has nearly three decades of experience helping leaders and teams build, maintain, and, when necessary, restore trust. On a freezing morning, it feels smart to let your car idle and warm up before driving off. But is it? Modern engines aren't built the way they used to be. In fact, letting your car sit and idle too long may not be doing what you think it is. This episode begins with what actually happens under the hood — and how long you really should wait before you hit the gas and go. https://www.mensjournal.com/gear/stop-idling-like-its-1985-warm-up-your-car-right There are few communication situations more intense than when a Secret Service agent speaks with someone who has threatened the President of the United States. In those moments, connection, trust, and careful listening aren't just helpful — they're critical. Brad Beeler developed his communication skills in those exact circumstances and shares how anyone can apply those same techniques to everyday conversations. Brad served in many roles at the Secret Service including on the protection detail for President George H.W. Bush. He is author of Tell Me Everything: A Secret Service Agent's Proven Strategies for Earning Trust, Revealing the Truth, and Communicating with Anyone (https://amzn.to/3M5YlKy). Designing a meaningful life may not be about discovering your one true calling or waiting for passion to strike. What if finding meaning is something you build through experimentation — by testing ideas, adjusting course, and learning from experience? Bill Burnett explains how “design thinking” can be applied to life itself. It leaves very little leftover that allows us to do the things that we want or need to do.” In his work researching, teaching, and writing about emotional regulation and the conscious mind, Kross has explored how to manage the negative self-talk that sabotages our concentration. “Here's the good news,” he says. “You can get out of it. What if leadership isn't about confidence or visibility—but about building systems that expand access for others? In this episode, you'll meet Jiayuan Tian, a social entrepreneur and graduate student at Columbia University SIPA, whose journey through global education reshaped how he understands inequality, opportunity, and leadership. After studying at Minerva University and living across cities around the world, Jiayuan discovered a paradox: the more global his education became, the clearer it was how inaccessible global learning remains for many, often due to invisible barriers like language fluency, insider knowledge, and financial flexibility. That realization led him to co-found OneXplore, a youth-led organization designed to make global learning accessible and humane. Jiayuan shares how his view of leadership has evolved—from personal visibility to leadership as infrastructure: platforms, systems, and cultures that continue to serve people even when the founder steps away. You'll hear why access itself is a leadership issue, why storytelling carries responsibility, and why leadership is always relational. This episode will invite you to rethink how you design opportunities, support young people, and build organizations that endure through shared ownership and trust. Under Jiayuan's leadership, OneXplore has grown into a community of more than 100,000 young people, with partnerships spanning universities, international organizations, embassies, and global nonprofits. You'll discover: How leadership can function as infrastructure, not personalityWhy access—not talent—is often the real barrier to opportunityWhat young leaders need most from mentors and employersHow trust and storytelling shape sustainable organizationsWhy community is foundational to effective leadershipConnect with Jiayuan TianLinkedInCheck out all the episodesLeave a review on Apple PodcastsConnect with Meredith on LinkedIn

Summary In this episode, Andy talks with Joe Ferraro, host of the One Percent Better podcast and a coach who helps leaders have stronger conversations when the stakes are high. If you lead projects, you know how quickly a meeting, a status update, or a feedback moment can either build trust or quietly drain it. Joe shares small, practical moves that make conversations more memorable and more useful. You will hear why being "good at talking" is not the same as being good at conversation, and how preparation can be a generous act toward the other person. They also discuss how to avoid default, predictable questions, how to turn a one-way presentation into something more interactive, and how to keep your composure when you feel defensive. Joe even offers a simple technique for pressure testing ideas without starting a fight, plus a listening cue you can use the next time you feel tempted to jump in. If you're looking for insights on having better conversations that save projects and strengthen relationships, this episode is for you! Sound Bites "And you know what's a great barometer there is for people listening to ask themselves on a daily basis? How many questions do they ask?" "But the reality is a generous conversation is one where you're prepared." "And the easiest path, the simplest path is to ask more questions and then listen, like your life depends on it." "The human ear driving, or on the treadmill or in a board meeting doesn't want to hear the same length answer every time from Andy or Joe or Sheila." "If you feel like you're bursting at the seams and you need to share something, that's when you know to hold it in and to focus on them." "I teach people the technique of inserting devil's advocate, where you, you don't wanna necessarily become the villain, but you say, you know, Andy, you know, it's a great point." "But when I go back to, to Mitch Albom one time, he paused seven seconds before I asked him, before he answered the question." "If you have a recorded conversation, simply ask it to pull out every question that was asked." "My favorite question to ask is the one that I think will elicit the best response for what I'm interested in learning in this moment." AI is all the rage these days, and while there are many benefits to it, I'm concerned we're outsourcing too much of our thinking to artificial intelligence.    When you do so, it's affects how you show up as a communicator.   And so, I'm releasing a 6-part series on the communication skills you need to improve in the age of AI.   In this fourth episode of the series, I explore the essential communication skill of staying present and observant.   I make the case for how being fully engaged in conversations can enhance communicative understanding and connection, which leads to better conversations and outcomes.   Remaining present and observant in the moment requires intentionality and focus with all that exists to distract you these days, but doing so is possible.   To learn more about my communication workshops and trainings for teams and groups, go to https://michaelashford.com/team-communication-training.

Why clarity and authenticity matter more than ever in modern communication.Clear communication in the age of likes, LLMs, and constant noise isn't about talking more. For Nick Thompson, it's about being unmistakably clear and unmistakably yourself.Thompson, CEO of The Atlantic and former editor-in-chief of Wired, has spent his career shaping stories that hold attention. “Clear beats clever,” he says, stressing that authenticity and specificity are what make messages land. “If you can get across what you're really trying to say— if you can say it honestly, specifically, and ideally briefly—that's good. And if you can say it in a way that feels like you, that's great.”Beyond journalism, Thompson is an elite marathon runner, ranking among the top competitive runners in the world, an identity that, for him, isn't separate from writing or leadership but deeply connected to it. “[Running] has taught me all kinds of habits of mind and discipline and pacing,” he says, “There are all kinds of lessons from the sport that apply to my business life.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Thompson joins host Matt Abrahams to share how great communicators craft “sticky” ideas without chasing soundbites. From practical editorial tests to the importance of editing, structure, and authenticity, Thompson offers a roadmap for communication that doesn't just get noticed but lasts.Episode Reference Links:Nick ThompsonNick's Book: The Running GroundEp.183 Rethinks: How Anxiety Can Fuel Better Communication Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (04:10) - Good Communication in the Modern Day (04:52) - Finding Your Authentic Voice (05:59) - The Power of Editing (07:43) - Reading Your Writing Out Loud (09:36) - How to Create “Sticky” Content (10:58) - AI's Role in Journalism & Communication (13:01) - Using AI in Daily Life (13:45) - Running As Meditation (17:22) - What Running Teaches About Simplicity (18:57) - The Final Three Questions (23:15) - Conclusion  ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost. This episode is sponsored by Grammarly. 141. Silence Is The Secret Power Move Few People Learn To Master To Own Any Situation But It Comes With A Cost

Silence is one of the most misunderstood skills in leadership, communication, and life. Many people rush to fill quiet moments with explanations, reactions, or noise because silence forces awareness. It removes the ability to perform, defend, or control how others perceive us. This episode explores why silence feels so uncomfortable and why that discomfort is often a signal that something important is happening internally. The conversation breaks down how silence functions as a power move in high-pressure moments, not because it dominates a room, but because it regulates the nervous system. Troy shares how learning to pause instead of react creates clarity, steadiness, and intentional communication. The episode explores how silence can either trigger fear and old emotional patterns or become a stabilizing force, allowing you to respond with precision instead of impulse.Personal stories are woven throughout, including experiences with conflict, rejection, grief, and preparing for defining moments like public speaking and delivering a TEDx talk. These moments highlight how silence carries different emotional weight depending on context, and how the body often reacts to pressure as if every moment carries the same level of threat. The episode connects this to fight, flight, freeze, and fawn responses, and explains how silence can help interrupt those patterns before they escalate. The episode also explores how silence builds trust and presence in professional settings. Speaking less, pausing longer, and choosing restraint often signal confidence and credibility more than volume or speed. Listeners will hear how silence can shift power dynamics in business, leadership, and relationships, while also demanding emotional discipline, self-control, and a willingness to sit with discomfort.Ultimately, this episode is about mastering silence as a form of self-leadership. It is not about withholding communication or avoiding hard moments. It is about knowing when silence serves you, when it sharpens your message, and when it allows you to own a situation without forcing it. Silence works, but it comes with a cost, and this episode challenges listeners to decide whether they are willing to develop the discipline required to use it well.
