A smalltown farmboy born in the mud learns he is destined for something more. His launch into space on the Vostok reads like a storybook. The light of his first flight glows even now, but what does the light blind us to? Can we separate the shine from the star?   I used "Starman" by Piers Bizony and Jamie Doran, "Escaping the Bonds of Earth: The fifties and sixties" by Ben Evans and "Rockets and People Vol 3" by Boris Chertok along with supplemental sources including Nikolai Kamanin's diary.    Stars-intro music was "Labyrinth" by Sergey Cheremisinov. Then (and at the end) we had "On the Moon" by johnny_ripper. The middle, in various combinations and loops, was the Prelude to Richard Wagner's "Das Rheingold," as performed by the United States Military Band. The outro, as always, was Podington Bear's "Afterglow."

The Space Race heats up, and the internal Soviet power struggle begins. A man who yearns for the stars finally, after years of struggle, gets the chance to join them. But progress requires sacrifice. Hopefully the Chief Designer made the right one.   I used "Starman" by Piers Bizony and Jamie Doran, "Escaping the Bonds of Earth: The fifties and sixties" by Ben Evans and "Rockets and People Vol 3" by Boris Chertok. Additionally, I referenced the Hendrickx and astronautix.com translations of the Kamanin diaries as well as "Red Star in Orbit" by James E. Oberg. ALSO "The First Soviet Cosmonaut Team" by Burgess and Hall.   Music during the story of Daedalus was "Harbor" by Kai Engel. Then (and at the end) we had "On the Moon" by johnny_ripper. We use some of the Prelude to Richard Wagner's "Das Rheingold," as performed by the United States Military Band. Also included was Jazzar's "Railroad Whiskey co," Kai Engel's "Rainbow," and Yair Yona's "Pharoah 2011." The outro, as always, was Podington Bear's "Afterglow," with a special guest appearance by Kevin MacLeod's "Danse macabre."   The Ends twitter: @theendspodcast  The Conspirators twitter: @conspiratorcast

The man who was a shadow to the rest of the world becomes very real only after his star turns to cinders. Waves of confusion, malice, sorrow, and ambition rock both space programs.  The Soviet Union sees a golden opportunity to break the back of NASA. In the light of the sun, they will reach for future. In the dark of the witching hour, two friends will reach for the past.   I used "Escaping the Bonds of Earth: The fifties and sixties" by Ben Evans and "Rockets and People Vol 3" by Boris Chertok, "The First Soviet Cosmonaut Team" by Rex Hall and Colin Burgess, and "Challenge to Apollo" by Asif Siddiqi. Additionally, I referenced the Hendrickx and astronautix.com translations of the Kamanin diaries as well as "Red Star in Orbit" by James E. Oberg.   Music during the story of Icarus was "Harbor" by Kai Engel. "On the Moon" by johnny_ripper was present throughout. The European Archive supplied a recording of Alexander Borodin's "In the Steppes of Central Asia," as well as the third movement of Tchaikovsky's "Suite No. 1." Also included was Jazzar's "Railroad Whiskey co," Kai Engel's "Rainbow," and "Oneiri," and PC III's "Snow Ticket."   boy that's a lotta songs twitter: @theendspodcast email: hello@theendspodcast.com

A fallen Cosmonaut returns home. Another one follows him. We learn that the whole story is never the whole story . . . unless it is. Oberg. Also special thanks to Sven Grahn for his Space sounds.  Music during the story of Icarus was "Harbor" by Kai Engel. Somewhere else was "On the Moon" by johnny_ripper. The European Archive gave us the third movement of Tchaikovsky's "Suite No. 1" and the second movement of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade".  Also included were Jazzar's "Railroad Whiskey co," Kai Engel's "Oneiri," "Labyrinth" by Sergey Cheremisinov,  We end it with the Prelude to Richard Wagner's "Das Rheingold," as performed by the United States Military Band, followed by, as always, Podington Bear's "Afterglow." The Jonestown Flood, Mvmt 1 (Love in the Time of Prophets)

This is the first in a 4-part series of the events leading up to Jonestown's end in 1978. An ambitious and principled young lawyer meets a smart and charming college student as the '60s gave way to the '70s. As they'll learn, the rushing waters of revolution can cleanse the world. Or choke it.  I used "Marked for Death" by Timothy Oliver Stoen and "Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People" by Tim Reiterman in pretty much equal measure, along with a variety of articles from Alternative Considerations of Jonestown & Peoples Temple (http://jonestown.sdsu.edu/) Telegraph Avenue music was "Psychadelic Rock" by niodjo. Intro and outro drumbeats was "Drums Suspense" by Johnnymusic. Ocean Beach / creation music was "Background" by MaksimSafronov. Jesse Spillane rounds us out with "Meerkats in Love."

Tim and Grace thrive in the Temple as their life together withers. The seeds of tragedy are sown, and a child is born that will decide the fate of hundreds. Regret is a Colorado cottage.  I leaned heavily on "Marked for Death" by Timothy Oliver Stoen.  "Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People" by Tim Reiterman, "Gone from the Promised Land" by John R. Hall, along with a variety of articles from Alternative Considerations of Jonestown & Peoples Temple (http://jonestown.sdsu.edu/), rounded out the research. Outro music is Podington Bear's "Afterglow". Continuing motifs were "Psychadelic Rock" by niodjo and "Drums Suspense" by Johnnymusic. Jesse Spillane gave us another taste of "Meerkats in Love." Joining the repertoire is "Nostalgic" by minimalpiano and Black Ant's "government funded weed."

A mysterious death at a trainyard sets far larger wheels rolling. Battle lines are drawn, an army is formed, and Congressman Leo Ryan prepares an investigation.   This one was mostly "Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People" by Tim Reiterman, "Gone from the Promised Land" by John R. Hall, along with a variety of articles from Alternative Considerations of Jonestown & Peoples Temple (http://jonestown.sdsu.edu/) and a smattering about Leo Ryan, including http://www.sfgate.com/opinion/article/Jackie-Speier-moving-on-moving-up-Survivor-2511901.php and https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1978/11/23/san-francisco-says-farewell-to-rep-leo-j-ryan/657dfcc6-3fc0-47ef-b3ab-faf8bc137744/?utm_term=.f340b9a24dd9   Music picks were the now-classic "Drums suspense" and "Psychadelic Rock" by Johnnymusic and niodjo respectively. Returning is "Background" by MaksimSafronov. Newcomers are Podington Bear's "Sepia" and Lorenzo Music's "We all fall down."

Tim and Grace accompany a hard-charging Congressman into a confrontation with Jim Jones. Journalists, lawyers, relatives, and anchormen all gaze into the abyss. The sun is a harsh mistress.    This one was entirely "Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People" by Tim Reiterman, "Gone from the Promised Land" by John R. Hall, along with a variety of articles from Alternative Considerations of Jonestown & Peoples Temple (http://jonestown.sdsu.edu/). Also heavy on "Marked for Death" by Tim Stoen. Let's just list the music. "Drums suspense" by Johnnymusic.
