Denver-born songwriter, guitarist, singer, activist, and performer Jill Sobule, is possibly best-known because of her breakthrough hit of “I Kissed a Girl” (pre-dating Katy Perry by more a decade), and “Supermodel,” the anthem from the film Clueless. In her over seven albums, the troubadour has "mused on topics such as the death penalty, anorexia, shoplifting, reproduction, the French resistance movement, adolescence and the Christian right." She has also written music for TV and theater, been active in numerous social and political causes, and been a pioneer in the art of crowdfunding. On her 2018 album, Nostalgia Kills, released on her own Pinko Records, the songwriter/composer tackles adult topics, and looks back without sentimentality to “exorcise some junior high school demons.” The late Jill Sobule and her band joined us to perform some of these songs in-studio in 2018. Dan, Manny, & Billy are joined by their longtime friends Jeremy & Mike to talk about a whole bunch of craziness to put to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “Hellraiser, I think is the most overrated horror franchise of all time.” -Dan Dan, Manny, & Billy pulled this Nostalgia Test News/Audience Suggestions/Friend Hangout out of left field! They're surprised by their longtime friends Jeremy (from Mrs. Doubtfire, the Metallica episodes, and the 2024 Hangout) & Mike (from the Iron Eagle episode). This dives into SNL funny or not, Reboots (again), Hockey and can Dan find a skate for a size 14 shoe, 100 men vs 1 gorilla, and insane drinking stories. The conversation goes even further back into memories of playing manhunt and if that game can be played today, a cool idea for a horror movie, stories from summertime at the public pool, diners, drinking Black Haus and After Shock, and so much more. This is an episode for the ages, a true inside look at these guys' friendships and what makes The Nostalgia Test Podcast so much fun. Nostalgia is one of those complicated emotions: we long to be transported to a place or moment in the past that we have loved but at the same time feel sad that it has gone forever. It is also a bit of a slippery intellectual concept: regarded as a malady when the term was first coined in the 17th century, nostalgia is now thought to be benign or even mildly therapeutic. And beyond personal recollections, business uses it to sell all manner of things and some politicians skilfully deploy it to hide their real objectives. So what actually is nostalgia?Iszi Lawrence explores the past and present of nostalgia with Dr. Agnes Arnold-Forster , author of Nostalgia: A History of a Dangerous Emotion, Prof. Krystine Batcho who devised the Nostalgia Inventory and Dr. Tobias Becker author of Yesterday, A New History of Nostalgia. We also hear WS listeners' views on nostalgia.(Photo: Vintage photographs with a dried rose. Credit: Alicia Llop/Getty Images)

HELLO FROM MIAMI!!! We actually recorded a podcast (UNRELEASED) from here right when we started dating and so we were feeling NOSTALGIC and wanted to do a little relationship Q&A. We dive into some of YOUR questions about our relationship! From navigating parenting style differences to deciding when the right time is for another kid, we're getting personal and answering your burning questions. We kick things off with a weekly house update—spoiler alert, it involves cameras, alarms, and doorbells (read: you now need security clearances to enter our house lol). Then, we get into how we were so confident in our decision to have a kid after knowing each other for such a short time, and whether we've ever second-guessed our decision. And of course, we touch on the big question: Are we ready for baby #2? Plus, does marriage feel more or less important now that we've got the house and baby? As always, we wrap up with some fun Things We DMed Each Other—including new parents getting reimbursed $36,000 for childcare and why we think DoorDash's “DoorDad” is a game-changer. Also apparently we need to stop saying “THANK YOU” to ChatGPT?! LOVE YOU GUYS! Send us a textOkay, so here's the story: A community of imaginary creatures band together to teach lessons of sharing, caring and interdependency. No, not “The Smurfs”. No, not “Care Bears”. Boy, the 80s were full of this trope. Here now is the story of how this Fraggle-tastic show came to Saturday Morning. Is it possible to dance your cares away? Even if you have a white man's overbite? What killed this show since the original series was so successful? Did this show in fact save the world? All these questions, and more, will be answered in this look at FRAGGLE ROCK: The Animated Series! Thanks for ‘tooning in. Dan, Manny, & Billy put the 2023 American crime thriller film The Last Deal to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST (NOW)! “[The Last Deal] is a cautionary tale when your friend is a fucking asshole.” -Dan Dissinger The boys have so much fun talking about all the insanity in the indie action drama The Last Deal. They get into the main character's journey to sell 200 pounds of weed in only a week and to find a .22 bolt action rifle at his mom's ranch. They try to figure out why anyone would trust a friend that you just saw stab a guy with a screwdriver, why do loan sharks need to have a contract signed, the long driving sequences, in the movie, and who is this stable girl and what's her deal. There's also the separate movie the girlfriend is in and why is there a naked woman on the toilet. At the end, Dan, Manny, & Billy give their Nostalgia Test Now verdicts and rate the film. There's a lot of talk lately about patronage politics returning to Washington – a system based on loyalty, relationships, favors and transactions – but this kind of system is not new. Patronage was once the beating heart of the Democratic Party, and of course, the Massachusetts state lottery. So what changed? How did the party of patronage become the party of technocrats? In this second interview episode, host Ian Coss speaks with historian Lily Geismer, co-editor of a new book about the evolution of the Democratic Party: “Mastery and Drift: Professional Class Liberals Since 1960.”

Re-reading is a practice fits into every reader's life in a different way, and today's guest has embarked on a unique reading challenge that brings a fresh perspective to her re-reading. Sarah Swarbrick joins Anne today from the outskirts of Sydney, Australia, to talk about the special project she's crafted in advance of her 53rd birthday. With her responsibilities shifting and her kids getting older, Sarah's finding more time for reading lately, and she's excited about having extra space to approach her books with a different kind of thoughtfulness and intention. Sarah's decided to re-read a selection of her favorite books from childhood, and she's also trying to pair each childhood favorite with a more recent release. She's looking for books that have a lot to say to each other, that can really be in conversation with each other, and not just in the ways that are obvious on the surface. She and Anne discuss Sarah's project so far, and explore some unpaired re-reads to discover which new-to-her titles Sarah might enjoy matching with her long-standing favorites. See the list of titles discussed today and leave your suggestions for Sarah on our show notes page at whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/470.
