This is a fun nostalgic hangout all about toys, water fights, toy stores, candy, and classic Nostalgia Test Tangents. Dan & Manny bring a bunch of toys to surprise, show & tell, and put to the test. No one knows what the other is bringing, so you know this always leads to some fun nostalgic chaos. Some of the toys are plastic water guns, balls, sticky hands, and Silly Putty even makes an appearance! While all of this is going on, Dan takes it upon himself to have a side Nostalgia Test putting Life Savers and Bubble Tape to the ultimate test, and you can imagine how that goes. In a time where all our fun is becoming more and more intangible, our imaginations are under attack, and our third spaces are being erased, talking about childhood toys and fun is more important than ever. We need to take these things back and engage in real messy fun. One of the moments in this episode that proves this is when Dan & Manny reminisce about having water fights in their yards. If you don't know what a water fight is, get on looking it up, grabbing some friends, and having some old fashion wet and wild fun. This isn't just a comedic look back on a simpler toy past, it's a necessary reminder that at one point in our history we were able to have fun with way less, that our lives weren't a race to monetization, and that time with one another meant sometimes being bored together, going somewhere, and/or thinking up an original game a la Calvinball, shoutout Calvin & Hobbes. We might not be able to go back to these times, though we can make time to be silly; it might just save our lives. Sounds like everybody should immediately quit their jobs, right?Well, maybe hang onto that health insurance.The show crunches another number: out of roughly 5 million registered creator accounts, only 5,076 have earned more than $1 million on the platform. Suddenly the “easy money” plan starts looking suspiciously like every other entertainment career.Naturally, this becomes a discussion about celebrity OnlyFans accounts, what exactly people are paying for, whether there's a male market for the platform, and the apparently untapped economic potential of vacuuming your house without a shirt on.Business school, but worse.Then the funny podcast nostalgia machine kicks into gear as Riz asks everybody to remember the websites and apps from the early days of the internet.MySpace. Napster. GeoCities. eBaum's World. ICQ. Strong Bad. Fark. The Chive. Chatroulette.Especially Chatroulette.Rafe perfectly describes the difference between Russian roulette and Chatroulette: Russian roulette gives you one bad chamber out of six. “The Romans did that many, many times — until normal had changed so radically that there was nothing left of the republic to protect.” — Michelle Berenfeld on getting “back to normal” Are we Rome (yet)? Michelle Berenfeld fears we are. Back in April of last year, the professor of classics at Pitzer College published “The Roman Way to Trash a Republic” in the Atlantic. And now Berenfeld has expanded her argument into Lessons from a Lost Republic, a new book about what Ancient Rome can teach us about our current American moment. There are two Romes, Berenfeld reminds us: the Roman Republic and Imperial Rome. Nostalgic tech guys like Mark Zuckerberg are obsessed with the imperial world of emperors, legions, and world domination, while the more forward-thinking founders of the American republic used imperial figures like Caesar and Augustus as negative lessons from antiquity. Asking whether Trump is Roman is like asking whether the Pope is Catholic. Certainly he's a wannabe Caesar with his fleshy face on our currency, his imperial DC arch, his daily wars, and all those fake blood sports on the White House lawn. But the daily comedy show misses the longer-term political tragedy. Berenfeld fears the shift in power from Congress toward an imperial presidency, a trend she says predates Trump and will outlast him. The gravest Roman conceit was believing, after each crisis, that things could get “back to normal” — a mantra Roman citizens repeated endlessly until there was nothing left of the old republic to protect. Then there's Zuckerberg, who even named his daughters August and Aurelia. For Zuck, Augustus should be praised for doing “tough things” to usher in two centuries of peace and prosperity. But Berenfeld reminds us those tough things included drawing up enemies lists and killing everyone who crossed him. Meanwhile, this supposed peace and prosperity (de)generated the rule of Caligula and Nero. Augustus, Berenfeld argues, was one of history's great spin doctors, claiming to be restoring a corrupted republic while simultaneously dismantling it. No wonder, perhaps, Zuckerberg admires him so much. Berenfeld says that the Roman spectacle of “bread and circuses” should be a warning. Juvenal's complaint was that Romans traded their liberties for gladiatorial games and free grain. We're making the same trade in contemporary America, Berenfeld observes, and getting neither. Most Americans, she concludes sadly, can't even afford a World Cup ticket. Berenfeld's deepest lesson is about power and political agency. Political powers given up are not easily gotten back, she warns. Republics are not saved by Hollywood-style saviors, and there is no golden age to restore. That said, the Los Angeles-based classicist hasn't completely given up hope. Nothing about Rome's trajectory was inevitable, she reminds us. Remixing Benjamin Franklin, the American Republic is ours to keep, if we use our agency as citizens. Just don't tempt fate by naming your daughters August and Aurelia. Five Takeaways •       The Founders' Rome vs the Bros' Rome. Americans are obsessed with the wrong Rome. The TikTok meme, the billionaires, and the manosphere celebrate the empire — emperors, legions, gladiators, world domination — while the founders admired the republic: 500 years of government founded on the rejection of a king, with rule of law, guaranteed rights, and peaceful transitions of power, all rare in antiquity. They designed the American constitution in explicit dialogue with Rome's collapse, asking “what if someone like Sulla or Caesar got this position?” — and regarded the men the bros now worship as usurpers and dictators. Polybius' mixed constitution — part monarchy (consuls), part aristocracy (Senate), part democracy (assemblies) — became their template of checks and balances. A republic, as Franklin warned, if you can keep it.•       On the Nose — and Beside the Point. Trump's Romanism is almost comical: his face on coins, a triumphal arch, blood sport performed on the White House lawn. But Berenfeld's book — which she didn't want to be about Trump at all — argues the real Roman echo is structural: a Senate voluntarily handing its powers to one man, a trend that predates Trump and will outlast him. The gravest error is the “back to normal” fallacy: after each crisis, the Romans told themselves the republic had survived and things could return to normal — many, many times, until normal had shifted so radically that there was nothing left to protect. America's dichotomy of denial and despair repeats it: blaming everything on one president gives cover to everyone else who is ceding, normalizing, and waiting for the storm to pass.•       Bread, Circuses — and Neither. Juvenal's famous sneer, decoded: the circuses were amphitheater games staged sometimes every other day; the bread was a grain allotment for every Roman citizen — in effect, Berenfeld notes, a minimum basic income, something our politics would call socialism. The Roman people traded their liberties and their republic for that package. Americans, she argues, are making the same trade and receiving neither the bread nor the circuses — no basic income, and most people can't afford a World Cup ticket. The party structure rhymes too: the populares and the optimates were both parties of very rich men competing for a few powerful positions, and eventually they looked alike to ordinary Romans — much as America's two parties have begun to look alike to ordinary Americans.•       Marcus Aurelius Was Writing His Memoirs. Every American man Berenfeld meets brings up Marcus Aurelius. The Meditations contain genuine wisdom — thoughtful action, the equal shortness of all lives — but context deflates the cult: it was the private journal of an elderly emperor, written in Greek (the language of philosophy, not of his soldiers), barely read in antiquity and rediscovered much later. “It's a little bit like when George Bush started making paintings.” Andrew's Arendtian reading — stoicism as the inward turn of men whose empire had abolished politics — hangs over the manosphere's version. And the one way she wishes Trump were more Roman: the engineering. Roman concrete got stronger underwater; on the reflecting-pool problem in DC, “if I were an ancient Roman, I could tell him — I've got a guy.”•       Powers Given Up Are Not Easily Gotten Back. The book's core warning: when a legislature grants one man powers beyond his office — always in the name of crisis — those powers stick to the office long after the man is gone, and no savior restores them. Lincoln and FDR stretched their bounds and let go afterwards (or died, as Andrew noted; she conceded). Berenfeld refuses the fascism debate — Mussolini cast himself as a new Augustus, and 1930s historians bought the story — offering a sharper test instead: would you give these powers to a president whose politics you oppose? Nero's fiddle was posthumous PR; an emperor's reputation depends on his successor, which makes the augury of a President Vance worth watching. Nothing was inevitable — not Augustus, not Christianity, not the fall. Political agency is...

At the peak of the drive-in theater craze in 1958, more than 4000 drive-ins were operating in the U.S. Today that number is closer to 300. It's been a rough journey for our host and like Dan said, they really needed a win. Major League has a killer cast, yet unfortunately only 2 and a quarter speaking roles for women. With new movies and our lives being sanitized of color watching Major League reminds the audience of a time when films, lives, clothes, and the overall world was a fun place to live. Sure, it wasn't perfect, but the men and woman looked like people. The bodies were real bodies. It was more okay to age. Actors were age appropriate for their parts. Suspending disbelief was so much easier. The guys talk all about these things while reciting their favorite lines, laughing about the many training montages, giving the late Bob Uecker his flowers, and talking about the power and lasting legacy of baseball movies like The Natural, Field of Dreams, and A League of Their Own. All of this was going on while the New York Knicks were being destroyed in game 3 of the NBA Finals. Is Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey a true cinematic masterpiece—or an impressive visual epic that falls just short of Nolan's best work? On this episode of The Next Reel, Tyler Johns and Lance Taylor break down one of the most anticipated movies of 2026: Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey After seeing the film twice during its premiere weekend, Tyler shares his complete review of Nolan's ambitious adaptation of Homer's legendary Greek epic. The discussion covers the movie's enormous scale, stunning IMAX cinematography, emotional themes, major performances and the importance of choosing the right theatrical format. Tyler explains why watching The Odyssey outside of a full 70mm presentation can affect the film's aspect ratio, visual impact and overall sense of immersion. They also discuss Matt Damon's performance as Odysseus, including how he handles the character's guilt, shame, exhaustion and helplessness throughout the journey. Tyler also highlights Jon Bernthal's performance as Menelaus, praising Bernthal for stepping outside the aggressive, hot-headed roles audiences often associate with him. While many early viewers have called The Odyssey a masterpiece, Tyler offers a more measured reaction. He considers the film a powerful visual spectacle and gives it 4 out of 5 stars, but does not rank it among Christopher Nolan's very best movies. The review also examines several creative decisions made in adapting Homer's original story, including notable pieces of dialogue and mythology that were changed, shortened or removed. Cocktail we never thought we'd still be at it in 2026, or that we'd meet so many amazing people and other podcasters, or even that our friends would want to come on and talk s**t with us on random Wednesday nights, or that we'd get the chance to interview creatives, actors, musicians, and academics from all over the world. We never thought that this indie engine that could would bring people joy and laughter, and at times make them angry at us, which that's cool too, and we're going to keep at it as long as we're having fun. This 200th episode is a classic Nostalgia Test from beginning to end. It's filled with Mineola High School tangents, personal stories, and dirty jokes. This is what it's like to hang out with us on a random night in our friend's basement until 3am talking nonsense about a movie that's a total reflection of our lives in 1999. When American Pie came out in 1999, we were all in high school going into our senior year. Over 13 of us pre-gamed before going to the Raceway Movie Theater on Long Island, bought tickets at the door, loudly found an entire row of seats, and laughed our asses off. This movie is a time capsule of the time and became a pop culture phenomenon. Not a single Millennial of a certain age can ever look at an apple pie again and not think of this movie or hear the phrase “This on time at band camp...” and not know what comes next. These moments are burned into our brains. Are there issues with this movie? Absolutely, and we talk about all of them, because you can't watch some of these scenes with older eyes and let that stuff slide. At the same time, rewatching American Pie was more than the scenes, it was about what was happening outside the borders of the film. It's about a time when groups of friends went places with each other, filled movie theaters together, went out after, and didn't feel the need to post about it on social media or make content about the moment. Those moments were for us. Of course, we're going to get into every detail of this movie, the Eugene Levy of it all, the sadness of Stifler's reality, why Kevin is the worst character in cinema history, Tara Reid (need we say more), is Natasha Lyonne a ghost, and we have a deep (no pun intended) conversation about the reality of the pie scene and what the filmmakers originally had in mind.
