(3) Bob Zimmerman examines the Soviet Zond program, noting that failures like Zond 4's self-destruction and Zond 6's atmosphere loss prevented the Russians from launching cosmonauts first. This created a vacuum that NASA manager George Low filled by proposing the bold, risky plan to send Apollo 8 to the moon without the lunar module. Despite the lack of a "lifeboat," leadership approved the mission to beat the Soviets. The guest emphasizes that these aggressive decisions were fueled by CIA intelligence suggesting a Russian lunar flight was imminent, forcing NASA to take engineering risks to secure a Cold War victory.1955

We dial back the clock to the 1960s and travel to the Soviet Union for the first episode of “Star City,” the new “For All Mankind” spin-off on Apple TV. Cold war cars, secretive Soviets, a frenemy in the surveillance typing pool, surprising Cosmonaut pranks, and the difficulty of memorizing your propaganda speech are all topics of conversation! Dan Moren and Jason Snell.

Arizona Senator Mark Kelly is back in the news to talk about public school funding. He sounds more like a Chinese Cosmonaut than an American Astronaut.
The way Whatsisname incessantly "floods the zone" with all-new outrages, you can be forgiven for thinking all the ICE drama is in the distant past. Spoiler: It's not. Just days ago at the Border Security Expo (fun crowd, right?), border czar Tom Homan said, quote, "You ain't seen shit yet." And: "You will see more ICE agents than you've ever seen before." So that's nice. Meanwhile, "Die with a Smile" by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars was Spotify's most-streamed song of 2025 and continues to do juuust fine. (Latest count: 3.7 billion plays.) So here ya go! Our parody of the song about the topic. M. Spaff Sumsion: Lyrics Mr. E. and Anna Nimmiti: Vocals Bob Emmet: Keyboards, bass, guitar, drum programming, production, and everything else.
What happens when you've spent your whole life fitting a mold — and you finally decide you've had enough? This week, James sits down with Eddy Boudel Tan, Vancouver-born author of The Tiger and the Cosmonaut, recorded live at Book Warehouse on Main Street. In this episode: The experience of being second-generation Chinese Canadian — caught between cultures, between expectations, between versions of yourself What Eddy calls "Asian rage" — the anger that builds when you're expected to minimize yourself to move through the world The loneliness of being surrounded by people who love you but don't really know you Why Casper, the novel's protagonist, keeps people out even as he falls apart The Buddhist concept of impermanence, and what it actually does to your relationship with fear Going home when home doesn't feel like home anymore Identity as oversimplification — and the liberation of letting go of the label The fleeting, morbid, weirdly hopeful thought: What if this is the happiest I'll ever be?The Tiger and the Cosmonaut is available now wherever books are sold. Find Eddy on Instagram at @eddyautomatic.REMINDER: May 19th at the Book Warehouse on Main (4118 Main street) An Asian Heritage Month Celebration of Authors with guests Eddy Boudel Tan, Wiley Wei-Chiun Ho, and Donna Seto. SpaceTime Series 29 Episode 38 *Gateway space station axed in favour of a base on the Moon – Part 1 In this special report, we'll look at NASA's decision to pause construction of the Lunar Gateway space station project in favour of accelerating plans to build a permanent base at the Moon's south pole. Forget everything you've heard until now! NASA is shifting focus totally on a new endeavour named Ignition which is designed to achieve US President Donald Trump's National Space Policy with the aim of establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon. The seven year 20 billion dollar project will see more than thirty spacecraft sent to the Moon to deploy rovers, equipment, habitat modules and of course people. *A New Artemis Mission As part of these changes the cadence of Artemis flights to the Moon will increase to at least one surface landing every year. And the configuration of the 98 metre tall SLS Space Launch System moon rocket will be standardised with the use of a Centaur V upper stage replacing both the current Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage and the planned Exploration Upper Stage. *Cosmonauts forced take control of a Russian Progress cargo ship Cosmonauts aboard the International Space Station were forced to take control of a Russian Progress cargo ship and dock the spacecraft manually after two of its KURS automated rendezvous antennas failed to deploy. *The Science Report Planet Earth has just experienced its 11 hottest years on record. Cosmonaut Boris Volynov almost died twice in one week in January 1969. The first was when his Soyuz-5 capsule nearly burned up on reentry. The second was when a Soviet Army defector ambushed the motorcade carrying him, seven other cosmonauts, and Premier Leonid Brezhnev with akimbo Makarovs. This is Part 1 of our series into the weird story of an attempted assassination of the leader of the Soviet Union. Just in time for Legal Week, Zach sits down Cosmonauts founder and legal tech insider Timo Karakashev for a wide-ranging conversation about where the legal AI market really stands. Timo shares what he's seeing on the ground: growing demand for “premium” legal AI tools, dissatisfaction with generic enterprise AI solutions, and a market that's still in the very early innings of adoption. In this episode: Why legal AI tools like Harvey and Legora feel “premium” compared to generic AI The growing dissatisfaction with enterprise AI tools like Copilot Why demand for intelligence in legal work far exceeds human supply How legal AI adoption differs across regions, including Australia The debate over whether AI will disrupt or strengthen the SaaS model Why IP law has historically lagged in tech adoption and why that's changing How legal tech conferences are evolving to focus more on practitioners and operators Why innovation at the top of the market could eventually improve access to justice Learn More: Timo - https://www.crunchbase.com/person/timo-karakashev Zach - https://www.legallydisrupted.com/ Follow Along: Timo - https://uk.linkedin.com/in/timo-from-cosmonauts Zach - linkedin.com/in/zachabramowitz
On this "Ventilation Friday," Lionel dives deep into his fascination with the legal and social complexities of mental illness. Drawing from his past as a young prosecutor handling "Baker Acts" and insanity pleas, Lionel recounts chilling courtroom memories—from the "Thorazine shuffle" to the tragic case of Billy Ferry. The lines open up for a raw, unfiltered session where listeners share harrowing encounters with schizophrenia, including a heartbreaking story of self-mutilation and a spouse hearing voices from "Aunt Rose". Lionel also tackles the link between high-potency modern cannabis and psychosis, while debating callers who try to blame mental health crises on demons and the "spiritual realm". Every year or so, someone with inside knowledge announces a date upon which the world will definitely end. So everyone hunkers down, and then the only thing that happens is every radio station plays R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)." The apocalyptic event you actually can bank on is an annual occurrence called the Holiday Season. Thus, this. Three Wise Guys: M. Strap in—tonight we're diving into a whirlwind of global tension, battlefield innovation, forgotten heroes, and a mystery straight out of a wartime sci-fi thriller. We open with a shocker: a Russian cosmonaut abruptly yanked from SpaceX's Crew-12 roster for violating national security rules, sending ripples through the international space community and raising questions about what really happened behind the scenes (08:22). Then we shift to a story long overdue for justice—veterans who served in Panama but aren't recognized by the VA, leaving hundreds without the benefits they earned under fire. Their fight for acknowledgment is heating up (17:27). On the cutting edge of military innovation, the Army unveils its first fully robotic dining facility in South Korea, serving hot meals in minutes and reshaping how troops are fueled for the fight (26:30). Next, we rewind the clock to The Battle of Los Angeles, 1942—the night anti-aircraft guns lit up the sky, millions panicked, and America believed a full-scale attack had begun. Was it enemy aircraft… or something else entirely (01:01:33)? And finally, we honor Floyd Smith, the visionary whose invention of the modern parachute changed aviation, airborne operations, and saved countless lives (01:07:31). AND WE PLAY THE CHANGEOVER FAMILY FEUD (33:30)!!!! https://lateforchangeover.com/
The Russian Cosmodrome was damaged after a launch over Thanksgiving. A Russian cosmonaut won't be flying aboard a SpaceX mission because of his cell phone. Tryptophan is the 15th amino acid found on Bennu. OSIRIS-APEX is off to explore another asteroid. We got another reminder that solar radiation can be very bad for airplanes. When Paula Cole released her breezy country/Americana ballad "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" in 1996, she was irritated by the fact her fans missed one key attribute: She'd meant it to be ironic. This tidbit was largely overlooked by her fans, the critics, and even Wikipedia, which notes: "The first two verses explore infatuation and discovery; a bridge expresses disillusionment, and a final verse changes to despair." (Kind of a metaphor for our entire music career, actually.) Of course, that's Wikipedia for you - and looking at the rest of the entry, I'm hard-pressed to find anything else they got right about this song, either. Much like our version. So why the confusion? Maybe, back in the 90s, people didn't know what irony was, until another song came along to explain it: apparently, it's like rai-yeee-ain on your weddingggggg day. Glad we got that cleared up. But here's what I DON'T get. Back in the day - say around the time of Elvis - a whole lotta US states (including California) were actually part of Mexico. (We won them in a poker game.) Today, a lot of American citizens in those states can actually trace their lineage back to that time. So the fact that our government is deporting citizens from states they no longer like anyway, and which used to be Mexico, back to modern-day Mexico, smacks of irony to me. ~ Bob Bad hombres: M. Spaff Sumsion: Lyrics Zelda Pinwheel: Lead and backing vocals Chris Mezzolesta: Kokomo vocals, epilogue Bob Emmet: Concept, all instruments, production, etcetera

PREVIEW. China's Cosmonauts Stranded After Space Debris Damage. Bob Zimmerman discusses Chinese cosmonauts (taikonauts) stranded on their space station. Their capsule was damaged by suspected space debris, likely resulting from a past Chinese anti-satellite test that created a gigantic amount of space junk. China is currently assessing the damage and may need to send up an uncrewed capsule for the crew's return. Retry

Thanks for the comment. I wrote it with the open ending with the intention of leaving it open to interpretation.”

October 21st, 1966. A sleepy Welsh village named Aberfan lies hushed beneath a gray dawn. At 9:13 a.m., the earth itself betrays it. The colliery spoil tip, swollen with rain, collapses in a roar of black sludge. It swallows Pantglas Junior School whole. 144 lives vanish—116 of them children. Their voices are silenced beneath the weight of coal waste. The nation mourns. The National Coal Board shrugs off blame. But amid the grief, whispers begin to surface. Whispers of dreams. Of warnings. A girl who saw the blackness coming. A boy who drew the end. A woman miles away who felt it in her bones. Could this tragedy have been foreseen? Could it have been stopped? Today, we step into a strange corner of history—a tale of two men who dared to ask that question, and the shadowy experiment they built to chase the impossible. This is the story of The Premonitions Bureau.
