In this gripping episode of Crime Time, Inc., we delve into the harrowing events of the Jonestown Massacre, where over 900 people, including more than 300 children, perished under the influence of cult leader Jim Jones. The episode begins by exploring Jones's early life marked by a disturbing fascination with death and his rise to religious leadership, characterized by charisma and a message of social justice. We then trace the evolution of his teachings from traditional Christianity to apostolic socialism, appealing to marginalized followers seeking a sense of belonging and purpose. As Jones's power grew, so did his manipulation tactics, leading to the establishment of Jonestown in Guyana, a so-called utopia that quickly turned into a nightmare of hard labor, communal living, and psychological abuse. The episode provides chilling details of life inside Jonestown, including suicide drills known as 'white nights' and the isolation imposed on followers. The situation came to a head with the visit of Congressman Leo Ryan in November 1978, which led to a violent ambush at a nearby airstrip and Ryan's subsequent death. This marked the beginning of the end, culminating in the mass suicide orchestrated by Jones, immortalized in the infamous 'death tape.' The episode examines the psychological manipulation that led to such a tragic end and discusses various conspiracy theories surrounding the event. We also hear the harrowing stories of survivors like Leslie Wilson and Vernon Gosney, who provide crucial insights into the psychological hold Jones had over his followers. The episode concludes with a reflection on the Jonestown Massacre's impact on society's understanding of cults, the importance of critical thinking, and the need to safeguard individual autonomy. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 15th & final study session on Michael Meiers' Was Jonestown a CIA Medical Experiment. This genocide has countless parallels to our recent literary selections - Columbine, Michael Swango, and The Hart murder-suicide. The Rev. Jim Jones, a White man born in a Racially Restricted Region of Indiana, took a thousand people from California to Guyana. On November 18th, 1978, Jones killed nearly all 1,000 of his mostly black followers and orchestrated the assassination of Con. Leo Ryan. Some were shot, but most were poisoned with cyanide, just like "Double-0 Swango." For nearly 50 years, this event has been mostly understood as a bunch of brainwashed blacks following a White charlatan to their demise. Meiers' work suggests something more nefarious. Last week, we heard further analysis of the litany of books published in the immediate days and weeks following the Guyana holocaust. None of these books were authored by black people. Meiers stresses that most of these books fail to mention the connections between Jonestown and the CIA - or the CIA activities in South America at large during this same period. He still recommends reading and scrutinizing these books for details that reveal truth. White female journalist Mae Brussell took the same view on this topic. Gus was surprised to hear Meiers' theory that Mark Lane and Jonestown were used to distract from the 1978 House Select Committee on Assassinations, which was investigating the murders of President John F. Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mark Lane had written books and publicly suggested that a government conspiracy was involved in these assassinations. He was slated to speak at the congressional inquiry when Jonestown intruded. It's alleged that Lane knew that Jones planned to murder everyone, yet did nothing to alert authorities or prevent the massacre. He profited financially from representing the Peoples Temple and shacked up with "former" member Terri Buford for years. And he was lambasted in the press as an untrustworthy crackpot and likely Jones lackey who aided in the genocide. Meiers points out that Lane was correct about the government conspiracy to murder to Dr. King, which which leads him to think Lane may have been targeted to be neutralized by the rot of Jonestown. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 14th study session on Michael Meiers' Was Jonestown a CIA Medical Experiment. This infamous mass murder has countless parallels to our recent literary selections - Columbine, Michael Swango, and The Hart murder-suicide. The Rev. Jim Jones, a White man born in a Racially Restricted Region of Indiana, took a thousand people from California to Guyana, South America. On November 18th, 1978, Jones killed nearly 1,000 of his mostly black followers and orchestrated the assassination of Congressman Leo Ryan. Some were shot, but most were poisoned with cyanide, just like "Double-0 Swango." For nearly half a century, this event has been conventionally understood as a bunch of brainwashed black loons following a White charlatan to their demise in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, listened to the report "death tape" where "father" encouraged hundreds of black people and black babies to "die with dignity." Meiers emphasizes that the original body county from this massacre was a just over 400. He submits that a more credible theory than what we've been told - an additional 500 corpses were obscured by the 400 bodies on top, is that survivors were located and executed over the days after Nov 19th. Meiers also questions if White Peoples Temple members were able to escape the carnage. Meiers also questions to the avalanche of books that commenced being published before all the bodies had been counted in Guyana. Almost all of these books are written by White authors, are rife with lies, and insist on branding this event a "suicide" - which nullifies one's ability to logically, accurately grasp the history and demise of The Peoples Temple. #DrCarltonGoodlett #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, we began the White Knight chapter, and Meiers told us that he knows this case has been widely investigated. Consequently, he would be focused on more neglected aspects of the carnage in Guyana. Gus thinks that when this book was first published more than 30 years ago, readers were probably more informed about the details of Jonestown than those of us reading all this in the 21st century. We learn about Jones' premeditated plotting to poison everyone in the commune. He ordered the poison in advance and strategically reconfigured millions of dollars in secret international accounts. Meiers emphasizes that all of the black participants in Jonestown had to be slaughtered to make certain the details of the experiment were never publicized. #PlanetOfTheApes #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Last week, Meiers provided historical context for the area known as Guyana - including meddling and disruption by the CIA and White people in the US and UK. Rev. Jones had political clout with non-white government officials in South America, which allowed for the Peoples Temple to access thousands of acres of land for pennies and permitted the sect to traffic guns, narcotics and people with no interference from customs officials. Meiers also began to detail the drug experimentation Jones was conducting. This the main theme for Meiers' work and the reason given for why practically everyone at Jonestown had to be slaughtered. #PlanetOfTheApes #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

For nearly half a century, this event has been conventionally understood as a bunch of brainwashed black loons following a White charlatan to their demise in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, Meiers suggested that Jim Jones may have been a part of COINTELPRO to neutralize attempted counter-racist efforts of black and non-white people. Jones had a "life" membership in NAACP, and Meiers tells us that "father" was so aggressive and successful in his efforts to overtake and manipulate the NAACP and other groups of black people, some black members became suspicious and adjusted their organizational laws/codes to counter Rev. Jones. We finally begin to hear the details about the Guyana commune and the geographic significance of this region. Much like 19th century California, there's gold and the coveted mineral bauxite Guyana soil. And there's a contested bitter border between Venezuela and Guyana. The presence of powerful White people like JIm Jones, helped secure the area. Meiers also highlighted how Jones used animals in his charade. The dogs, monkeys, and parrots gave the impression of Noah's Ark, a traveling circus, or at least a kooky, non-Racist White Man. #ChemicalAndBiologicalWarfare #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

This infamous mass murder has countless parallels to our recent literary selections - Columbine, Michael Swango, and The Hart murder-suicide. The Rev. Jim Jones, a White man born in a Racially Restricted Region of Indiana, took a thousand people from California to Guyana, South America. On November 18th, 1978, Jones killed nearly all 1,000 of his mostly black followers and orchestrated the assassination of Congressman Leo Ryan. Some were shot, but most were poisoned with cyanide, just like "Double-0 Swango." For nearly 100 years, this event described as a bunch of brainwashed black loons following a White charlatan to their death in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, Meiers detailed the assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk - both classified as White. The White male assassin, Dan White, was branded an "all-American" - which basically means White, and received way more sympathy than all of the hundreds of murdered black Jonestown survivors combined. White employed the "Twinkie Defense," alleging that after binging on junk food the evening of November 26th, a sugar stupor the following day caused him to mindlessly slaughter two White elected officials using hollow point bullets. He reloaded between the murders - and waved to future mayor Dianne Feinstein. White gays rioted in San Francisco to display their outrage over the lenient sentence White received - when he could have landed the death penalty. Meiers suggests that Jones was motivated to kill Mayor Moscone because he knew about the Peoples Temple's crimes and might snitch to investigators of the Guyana carnage. The prosecuting attorney, Joseph Freitas, was roundly criticized for his efforts and subjected to daily reminders and suspicion that he deliberately botched the 1976 investigation of voter fraud involving the Peoples Temple (and Mayor Moscone). Listeners and Gus T. think Meiers failed to present sufficient evidence of Jones' involvement in the murders and/or his motivation to kill these 2 White Men. However, there are many other reports that discuss this extraordinary bit of California history. #BlackPantherParty #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, Meiers outlined the allegations that Rev. Jones masterminded a voter fraud scheme to help install George Mascone as mayor of San Francisco. The new mayor rewarded Jones with an influential appointment to the city Housing Authority - budgeted at more than $10 million. The reverend grew so powerful, when Whites investigated the 1975 mayoral election for voter fraud, he had Temple crony Tim Stoen hired by District Attorney Joseph Freitas - also a Jones lackey - to help conceal truth about the electoral malfeasance. Surprisingly, they found no wrong doing, but, shockingly, all records of the voters for the 1975 mayoral elections have vanished. Along with rigging elections, many journalists and Bay Area citizens thought The Peoples Temple was connected to the 1978 assassinations of Mayor Mascone and Harvey Milk. The two White elected officials were slain in City Hall 9 days after the Jonestown Massacre - which also resulted in the murder of a White politician, Ryan, who made enemies at the CIA. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Shot with cyanide bullets in November of 1973 (5 years before the November 1978 Jonestown massacre), the Symboinese Liberation Army (SLA) claimed credit for the slaughter and proceeded to kidnap Patricia Hearst, White daughter of publishing titan Randolph Hearst. Meiers suggests that the SLA was a CIA creation and their harebrained kidnapping may have been an elaborate distraction to keep North Americans from paying more attention to the concurrent COINTELPRO and Watergate scandals involving state-sanctioned corruption. Meiers also suggests Rev. Jones was connected to the SLA and may have contracted them to eliminate Dr. Foster, who opposed Jones' unfettered access to Oakland's poor black children. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, we learned about a number of suspicious deaths of Peoples Temple (PT) members that might be linked to Rev. Jones. The deaths of people like Maxine Harpe and Chris Lewis are often omitted from the standard narratives of Jonestown. Meiers suggests that Jones used his considerable political might in Mendocino County - which included PT members having local government jobs and Rev Jones' own employment as a school teacher and foreman on the Mendocino Co. jury - to squash unfavorably publicity and/or formal investigations of the temple. Gus denounced Meiers for mentioning the murder of 22-year-old Rory Hithe by PT member Chris Lewis, but failing to include that both black males were members of the Black Panther Party. In fact, Hithe was previously convicted for his involvement in the murder of Alex Rackley, who was reportedly accused of being an "agent" sent to spy on the Panthers. Hithe was released early for "excellent behavior." Lewis was found not guilty for killing Hithe, only to be murdered himself years later. The reverend recruited black children from the Oakland slums - which could have included little Bobby Hutton of the Black Panther Party. Rev. Jones and his White staff brandished fire arms and employed German shepherds to dominate the black people at the Ukiah "concentration camp." Meiers says part of the brainwashing included White staff pilfering books from their black captives, all the while, subsidizing the outfit by confiscating the member's social security checks and other valuables. Jones even looted the US Department of Agriculture's supplies of powdered milk and other food stuffs to externalize costs of the experiment. We heard the first rumblings of discontented members ("The Gang of Eight") and learned of Jones' power to silence critical members of the press who might closely scrutinize the new "Golden State" resident's pretend church. #AcresOfSkin #MurderInMemphis #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

For nearly half a century, this event has been conventionally understood as a bunch of brainwashed black loons following a White charlatan to their demise in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, Meiers detailed the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the Central Intelligence Agencies Counter Intelligence Programs of the 1960's and 70's aimed at controlling and observing black and non-white people around the world. Meiers details the CIA MK-ULTRA program, where Whites scientists studied ways to control and modify human thought, speech and actions (to maintain White Power). Meiers connected these illegal operations to the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 and President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Powerful White people with global concerns about the System of White Supremacy wanted both King and Kennedy deceased. During this same period, Rev. Jones traveled to Cuba, Brazil and other parts of South America to study black people, non-white religious practices, and possibly other duties for his White bosses. The 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and the global resistance against "colonialism" in places like British Guiana , made many White people extremely apprehensive about the future of the global System of White Power and necessitated CIA/White Supremacist counter measures - which may have included men live Rev. Jim Jones. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the fourth study session on Michael Meiers' Was Jonestown a CIA Medical Experiment. This infamous mass murder has countless parallels to our recent literary selections - Columbine, Michael Swango, and The Hart murder-suicide. The Rev. Jim Jones, a White man born in Indiana, took a thousand people from California to Guyana, South America. On November 18th, 1978, Jones killed nearly all 1,000 of his mostly black followers and Congressman Leo Ryan. A few were shot, but most were poisoned with cyanide, just like "Double-0 Swango." For nearly half a century, this event has been conventionally understood as a bunch of brainwashed black loons following a White charlatan to their demise in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, we learned about Jones' Indiana roots - including his Klu Klux Klan father. The Jones Klan lived in a number of Racially Restricted Regions within the Hoosier state - and Meiers highlights that Jones was poorly regarded by the large population of blond, German immigrants. He studied black congregations, black pastors, and religious activities in general. He used this research to deceive, manipulate and bilk his predominantly black congregations. Meiers states that for the duration of his ministry, Jones sought out black people to dominate. We heard more details about how Jones may have fabricated his medical records to help conceal his death in the massacre and we learned of suspicions that Jones may have been involved in the death of his adopted non-white daughter, Stephanie, and the White superintendent of the church's nursing home, Mable Stewart. They along with 4 others died in a ghastly May 1959 automobile crash in Indiana. Stephanie was not allowed to be buried with White people. #AcresOfSkin #MurderInMemphis #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

He detailed how Whites funneled money, paid soldiers, and arms into Angola to manipulate and destabilize the newly "independent" nation. One of Jones' henchmen, Phillip Blakey, is alleged to have participated in these Angola mercenary operations. We heard more details about Jones using "antisex" with male members to manipulate and control their thoughts, speech, behavior, and emotions. Jones is also credited with the creation of "direct deposit" to save his elderly parishioners from being mugged before they can invest in the Peoples Temple. He also established private check-cashing outfits to efficiently rob his black congregation. #COINTELPRO #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943# #HoosierRacism #RaciallyRestrictedRegions

For nearly half a century, this event has been conventionally understood as a bunch of brainwashed loons following a White charlatan to their demise in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, Meiers gave an abridged presentation on Nazi Germany. He emphasized that Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich were explicitly focused on Racial Purity and White Supremacy throughout the universe. Stunningly, Meiers details Hitler's obsession with the occult and (African) religious practices. Following the Nazi defeat, many Nazis/Germans crossed the pond and helped Whites in North America form the Central Intelligence Agency. Some of the White so-called Jews who absconded from the White Terrorism of Hitler were the Layton family. Meiers uses the second chapter to outline this powerful family's connections to nuclear weapons development, espionage, and, eventually, the People's Temple. #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943# #AnticipatoryDread

She represented California's 14th District in the House of Representatives—which includes San Mateo County and a portion of San Francisco County—from 2008 through 2022. Before serving in Congress, Speier was a California State Assembly member and California state senator; she started her career on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. Speier is returning to The Commonwealth Club to discuss her historic career, one that was launched after her near-death experience in Jonestown, Guyana in 1978 when she and her boss, Congressman Leo Ryan, were shot on the tarmac during the People's Temple mass murder suicide. Congressman Ryan did not survive, while Speier recovered and went on to devote her career to public service. In Congress, Speier was known as a fierce advocate for women's rights, including pressing for laws addressing reproductive rights and sexual harassment and assault, including in the military. She served on the Oversight and Reform as well as Intelligence and Armed Services committees during her time in Congress. The cult of Jim Jones, known as the Peoples Temple, is only one of many dangerous groups to deliberately shuffle off their mortal coils in large concerted efforts, but theirs was the most impactful. They are famous for "Drinking the Kool-Aid," an unfortunate and insensitive misnomer...After leading his church to Guyana, in 1978 they became the victims of the single greatest loss of American life in a non-military action until the 9/11 WTC attacks. Jones got a lot of his ideas from Father Divine, from the Peace Mission.Jim Jones was a serious communist, interested in building a diverse "rainbow family", but he was also a doomsday prepper, spouting some serious Incel philosophy, which is on-brand for how things ended. We get some personal details from biographers and childhood friends, too.Congressman Leo Ryan shoulders none of the blame, though his efforts to liberate the group did precipitate Jim's evil actions. Support us at Patreon and SpreadshirtJoin the Community on DiscordLearn more great religion facts on Facebook and Instagram

Buteyko Method, Wim Hof, Oxygen Advantage Master Instructor, Fascial Stretch Therapist, Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Pilates.  Leo previously appeared on episode 219 speaking on many elements of breath training for athletic performance including nose vs mouth breathing in training, breath hold time as a readiness indicator, and more. The use of one's breath for training and overall well-being has become more and more on my radar with each passing year.  From my foray into the endurance end of the competitive spectrum (Spartan Racing in 2019), to understanding the role of rib cage expansion in movement biomechanics, to breathing for energy and recovery, to the training practices of the old-school strongmen, in each year of my life, understanding and training the breath becomes more substantial. On today's show, Leo Ryan returns to dig into the role of breath training, and its role in recovery, both within the workout itself, and in day-to-day recovery from training efforts.  We often talk about having an adequate “aerobic base”, but for some reason, the actual core of that aerobic base, which is “breathing”, is rarely considered, and Leo goes into making capacity workouts even more effective through breathing mechanics, physiology and rhythm.  Leo will also cover the role of CO2 and CO2 tolerance in human and athletic function, rhythmic aspects of breathing in athletic performance, and then some dynamics on breathing in the scope of strength training sessions. Join Kyle and Ardon as they continue their multi-part series on one of the most infamous cults of all time: JONESTOWN. When we left off last week we had detailed some accounts of what life was like in Jonestown; before and after Jim Jones arrived in Guyana. Jim Jones was becoming more paranoid, erratic, and violent than he ever had before. It was all building to a head, and things were about to get a lot worse.  Because of Jim  Jones' paranoia, he started to employ what would become a relatively regular occurrence while Peoples Temple was in Guyana, White Nights. We will also be discussing the visit to Jonestown from United States congressman Leo Ryan, which unfortunately ended in tragedy. Hold on to your asses, because things are about to get backwards! https://linktr.ee/backasswardspod

Jim Jones was a communist who wanted to control the people and gain power. In order to get followers, he created a new religious movement. After attracting suspicion from the government in the mid 1970s, Jones and almost 1,000 of his followers migrated to a 3,800 acre commune called "Jonestown" in the country of Guyana. On November 17, 1978, Congressman Leo Ryan and a party of reporters and cameramen traveled to Jonestown to investigate claims of abuse. Ryan was slipped a note by a member who was asking for help. The next day, November 18th, Ryan and his party, along with several defectors made their way to an air field. Leo Ryan and four others were killed as they were boarding their plane after Jones sent his Temples security to make sure the plane doesn't leave. After this event, Jones forced his followers to drink cyanide laced flavor-aid, with children being the first to drink. Anyone who refused was either injected with poison or shot. In total, 918 Temple members died, including Jones (who shot himself).

Todays episode of the podcast covers a recent presentation I gave to LIT students and staff for their wellness week. I pull from the work of Patrick Mckeown and Andrew Huberman as well as from experience working with and recording podcasts with Leo Ryan. It's a while since I talked on sleep and it's something my clients are always working on and is a very important element of our health and fitness. Breathing is absolutely foundational to human health and performance and something I overlooked for years so I am delighted to tie these elements together in a podcast and share what I have learnt over the past year.

On November 18th 1978, over 900 members of People's Temple took part in the act of revolutionary suicide under the instruction of their leader. Hours prior, Congressman Leo Ryan and 4 others were murdered by temple members at the Kaituma airstrip. Until the terrorist attacks of 9/11, this event referred to as the “Jonestown Massacre” was the largest loss of US civilian life not caused by natural disaster. Join us in part two as we discuss the creation of Jonestown, everyday life in Guyana for People's Temple members, and the brainwashing and manipulation they received from their leader Jim Jones.

Todays episode of the podcast is an absolute cracker and I'm delighted to welcome back repeat guest Leo Ryan of innate strength. Leo coached me during the summer and helped me to improve my breathing mechanics, awareness around how I breathe and taught me invaluable lessons and techniques that I use every day since. The topic of todays podcast is breath work, how to start improving your breathing and techniques for reaching states of calm, hype and concentration. Every time I talk to Leo I leave with a deep appreciation for how we breathe and how fundamental it is to everything else we do. Can you think of anything else we do 19500 times a day on average?    IG @ eoindobbin.pt IG @ iamleodaniel
