Four pups have been born at Auckland Zoo and it's their first meerkat litter in more than a decade. The tiny quadruplets have brought the Meerkat mob numbers to seven. Adia, a first time mum is doing well and the pups, now about two and half weeks old are starting to explore and enjoy snacks other than mum's milk. Auckland Zoo's team leader Nick Parashchak spoke to Lisa Owen.
The Survival Squad: Friends, Fear, and a Jungle JourneyOwl, Meerkat, and Tiger—three best friends on a mission—are headed to the biggest jungle party of the year! But the path through the wild isn't easy. Along the way, the trio faces a series of unexpected challenges, from a raging river to a lurking snake, a herd of elephants, and more. As obstacles arise, each animal reacts in their own unique way: Meerkat sounds the alarm, Owl strategizes, and Tiger—well, Tiger sometimes fights, flees, freezes, or fawns!Certified Trauma and Resilience Practitioner Marcy Pusey, CRC, brings us The Survival Squad, the first in an exciting new series that introduces young readers to how their brains work when faced with stress. Without even realizing it, kids will learn about their brain's "survival team" and how these instincts help them stay safe.Perfect for parents, teachers, and therapists, this story helps children recognize their own emotional responses, offering a fun and empowering way to understand complex feelings. Will Owl, Meerkat, and Tiger make it to the jungle party? You'll have to read to find out!Want to be a guest on Book 101 Review? A world first creative benchmarking study from System1 and JCDecaux has run stacks of Australian Out-of-Home ads through its globally-renowned effectiveness scoring system and drawn a stark conclusion: 70 per cent of outdoor ads fail to move the needle. Andrew Tindall, SVP – Global Partnerships at System1, goes even further: “No-one understands how Out-of-Home works,” he says, particularly the critical need to land the brand within two seconds. At face value, not a wholly positive headline for the medium. But System1 has come up with a formula that, its data strongly suggests, massively improves effectiveness. It’s not rocket science. For example, just placing your logo at the top of an Out-of-Home ad increases brand recognition four times versus a logo parked at the bottom. Likewise be consistent – entertaining and never boring – and keep messaging simple and positive to get much higher brand lift, and ultimately, sales. On that front, Tindall says there is a false divide between brand and performance campaigns: The long, i.e. brand, always drives the short, i.e. performance. The research with JCDecaux, “allows us to add a lot more nuance to what is a very non-nuanced industry” and underlines why brand and demand “need to be brought back a little bit closer together”. Brands nailing Out-of-Home effectiveness locally include Compare the Market with its Meerkats, Uber Eats with the Wiggles and Simon Cowell, Specsavers and Ocean Spray, per Tindall. Sephora’s latest campaign, he says, is one of the highest scoring Out-of-Home ads System1 has ever tested. The bottom line? “The single standout thing for me in this research is it confirms that creative is the make and break of how effective a campaign can be.” Tindall, plus JCDecaux’s Cris Smart and Scott Jenkins, unpack the research’s key findings – and the seven simple steps to massively boost Out-of-Home effectiveness.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

South Africa's MeerKAT Telescope Discovers a Giant Galaxy Named Inkathazo by Radio Islam
In this episode of Construction Genius, we're joined by Zach Rapaport, founding principal of Meerkat, a real estate development consultancy focused on the hospitality segment.Meerkat offers strategic advisement for fractional development partnership insight and early stage exploration of a new deal/rebrand, as well as project leadership for development/renovation stage management. Zach started his career on the construction side, working with GCs to build compelling projects in the hospitality space. Following his stint in construction, he made the shift to real estate development and has been in that space since, breathing life into new and existing hospitality concepts. Having held VP tenure in-house with Life House Hotels, Selina, and Joe & The Juice, he is familiar with getting minimally resourced ventures off the ground efficiently and sustainably. With the majority of a typical project's budget being construction (and the inherent risk associated with the process that requires a watchful eye), Zach and his team brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that keeps clients comfortable with the direction being taken for their company's strategy via fractional development partner consulting as well as a project's design & development via management.
Dr Jacinta Delhaize wrote an article recently on The Conversation website about a South African telescope which has discovered a giant new galaxy, which is 32 times bigger than earth! The MeerKAT radio telescope is situated in the Karoo and is made up of 64 radio dishes and is operated and managed by the South African Radio Astronomy Observer.Dr Jacinta Delhaize is an astronomer (or astrophysicist) who’s expertise is in galaxy evolution and radio astronomy. She is also lecturer and Academic Staff member at the University of Cape Town. Secret emergency codes are used all around us, and they help people stay organized and safe, especially in busy places like airports, malls, or hospitals. For example, when you hear a "Code Adam" in a store, it usually means a child is missing, and staff will look for them immediately. Hospitals often use codes like "Code Blue" for medical emergencies, signaling that someone needs urgent help. At airports, there might be special codes to alert staff about suspicious activity without causing panic among travelers. These codes are meant to be discreet so that only trained people know what's going on and how to respond. Next time you're in a public place, you might hear one of these codes and know there's more going on than meets the eye! Credit: CC BY-SA 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... Today we have a brilliant interview for you as we speak with a fabulous Early Career Researcher, Dr Lauren Rhodes from the University of Oxford. Lauren has just published a paper on the BOAT … the Brightest Object of All Time … a “Once in 10,000 year event” The blast, called GRB 221009A, was over 100 billion times brighter than the sun. Lauren works in powerful collaborations which use a variety of radio interferometers, such as MeerKAT and e-MERLIN to study the radio emissions from explosive celestial events including jets from X-ray binaries and gamma ray bursts. She is using multi wavelength observations of these sources to understand each event's jet physics and its surrounding environment. This stunning episode is available free from Audible Podcasts, Soundcloud, Apple podcasts and Youtube MP3 links and a full transcript for those who may prefer to read our interview, is published on Astrophiz.com

The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
Hosted by Dr. Jacinta Delhaize & Dr. Daniel Cunnama. Today we are re-running Episode 11 from all the way back in Season 1! Jacinta takes us on a tour of her homeland, into the Australian bush, and chats about pathfinders, precursors and the exciting collaborations between South Africa and Australia! First, we hear from Dr. Ivy Wong, a researcher at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) in Perth, about large surveys of neutral hydrogen gas in galaxies and the results shared at the 12th PHISCC (Pathfinders HI Science Coordination Committee) Conference. Neutral Hydrogen atoms produce radio emission at a wavelength of 21cm or a frequency of 1420 MHz. This emission is commonly referred to as HI and it is the raw fuel of star formation. We are then joined by newly capped Dr. Brenda Namumba from the University of Cape Town. She tells us about her exciting work using the pathfinder to MeerKAT, the KAT-7 telescope. Finally, Jacinta sits down with Professor Peter Quinn, the Director of ICRAR. They chat about the the incredible growth of radio astronomy in both South Africa and Australia over the recent years, and the enormous collaboration opportunities the SKA is creating between the two countries!
